Troubleshooting IPSEC VPN LAN-toLAN
PIX 515E's on both ends, one with version 7 of PIX IOS, and one with version 6 -- also, there are no firmware upgrades to the PIX running IOS v6.
IPSEC VPN drops completely in a completely random fashion, and it comes back up after the SA's are cleared. Is the best step at this point to upgrade the v6 PIX to all current firmware and PIX IOS versions? What would I look for after the upgrades if the issue were not resolved?
Hi there i had this problem, but my scenario was like having a router connected to two PIX running 6.3 code. After several testing i got it to work in both 6.x and 7.x. I will attach the config for your reference. The configurations have been picked up from the cisco site only, and i believe it works pretty fine. Another thing could you have a debug isakmp sa and debug ipsec running on your pix so that we could find out the problem, post your logs in case you have collected the error messages.

ASA 5505 IPSEC VPN connected but can't access to LAN
ASA : 8.2.5
ASDM: 6.4.5
LAN: 10.1.0.0/22
VPN Pool: 172.16.10.0/24
Hi, we purcahsed a new ASA 5505 and try to setup IPSEC VPN via ASDM; i just simply run the Wizards, setup vpnpool, split tunnelling, etc.
I can connect to the ASA by using cisco VPN client and internet works fine on the local PC, but it cannot access to the LAN (can't ping. can't remote desktop). I tried the same thing on our Production ASA(those have both Remote VPN and Site-to-site VPN working), the new profile i created worked fine.
Below is my configure, do I mis-configure anything?

: endI change a Machine's gateway to this ASA and capture again, now we can see some reply.
All ohter PCs and switches gateway are point to another ASA, maybe that's the reason why i didn't work?
what's the recommanded way to make our LAN to have two 2 gateways(for load balance or backup router, etc)?
add two gateways to all PCs and swtichwes?

I know this is a basic question but I would really appreaciate the help!
Thanks so much,Hi,
You could try to change the Split Tunnel ACL to Standard ACL
First removing it from the VPN configuration and then removing the ACL and creating it as Standard type ACL
Current
access-list CEPIC_VPN_CLIENT_splitTunnelAcl permit ip LAN-CEPIC 255.255.255.0 any
New
access-list CEPIC_VPN_CLIENT_splitTunnelAcl standard permit LAN-CEPIC 255.255.255.0
You could also try adding
fixup protocol icmp
fixup protocol icmp error
Have you monitored the logs while you are attempting to connect to the LAN network?

Setting up IPsec VPNs to use with Cisco Anyconnect
So I've been having trouble setting up vpns on our ASA 5510. I would like to use IPsec VPNs so that we don't have to worry about licensing issues, but from what I've read you can do this with and still use Cisco Anyconnect. My knowledge on how to set up VPNs especially in iOS verion 8.4 is limited so I've been using a combination of command line and ASDM.
I'm finally able to connect from a remote location but once I connect, nothing else works. From what I've read, you can use IPsec for client-to-lan connections. I've been using a preshared key for this. Documentation is limited on what should happen after you connect? Shouldn't I be able to access computers that are local to the vpn connection? I'm trying to set this up from work. If I VPN from home, shouldn't I be able to access all resources at work? I think because I've used the command line as well as ASDM I've confused some of the configuration. Plus I think some of the default policies are confusing me too. So I probably need a lot of help. Below is my current configuration with IP address altered and stuff that is completely non-related to vpns removed.
NOTE: We are still testing this ASA and it isn't in production.
Any help you can give me is much appreciated.

So then what does this mean for us VPN-wise? Is there any way we can set up multiple VPNs with this license? -
Remote site redundancy IPSEC VPN between 2911 and ASA
We already have IPSEC VPN connectivity established between sites but would like to introduce some resilience/redundancy at a remote site.
Site A has an ASA with one internet circuit.
Site B has a Cisco 2911 with one internet circuit and we have established site-to-site IPSEC VPN connectivity between the 2911 and the ASA.
Prior to getting the new internet circuit, Site B had a Cisco 877 with an ADSL line which are still available but aren’t currently in use.
The internet circuit at Site B has dropped a few times recently so we would like to make use of the ADSL circuit (and potentially the 877 router too) as a backup.
What is the best way of achieving this?
We thought about running HSRP between the 877 and 2911 routers at Site B and, in the event of a failure of the router or internet circuit, traffic would failover to the 877 and ADSL.
However, how would Site A detect the failure? Can we simply rely on Dead Peer Detection and list the public IP address of the internet circuit at Site B first with the public IP address used on the ADSL line second in the list on the ASA? What would happen in a failover scenario and, just as important, when service was restored – I’m not sure DPD would handle that aspect correctly?
I’ve read briefly elsewhere that GRE might be best to use in this scenario – but I can’t use GRE on the ASA. I have an L3 switch behind the ASA which I may be able to make use of? But I don’t want to disrupt the existing IPSEC VPN connectivity already established between the ASA and the 2911. Can I keep IPSEC between the ASA and 2911 but then run GRE between the L3 switch and the 2911? If so, how would this best be achieved? And how could I also introduce the 877 and ADSL line into things to achieve the neccessary redundancy?
Any help/advice would be appreciated!Hello,
I don't think GRE tunnel that you could set up on the switch behind ASA would be really helpfull. Still site-2-site tunnel you want to establish between ASA and some routers, but still it is ASA which needs to make decision about which peer to connect to.
Possible solution would be to do HSRP between both routers on LAN side and with two independent tunnels/crypto maps (one on each of them). On ASA you would need to set up two hosts in set peer. Problem of this solution is that if one router at side B is going to go down and second ADSL line will take over ASA will not do preempt after you main Internet connection is up again. This would happen after ADSL Internet connection will be down.
Solution to that would be to assign two different public IP addressess on two different interfaces of ASA. Then you attach two crypto maps to both interfaces and by using sla monitor (let's say icmp to main router, if it does not respond then you change routing for remote LAN to second interface) you are selecting which crypto map (with one peer this time) should be used.
I hope what I wrote makes some sense. -
I've got a NAS setup with various services running on custom ports to help minimize exposure (especially to script kiddies). I've tested everything both internally and externally to confirm they all work, and even had someone at a remote location confirm accessibility as well. Port forward configurations performed on the Actiontec are working well.
I installed an L2TP/IPSec VPN server, tested internally and it connected successfully. So for all intents & purposes, this validates that the VPN server is correctly configured to accept inbound connections and functioning correctly.
I logged into the Verizon Actiontec MI424WR router, setup port forwarding for UDP ports 500, 1701 & 4500.
Note: I added the AH & ESP protocols based on what I saw on the built-in L2TP/IPSec rules
With the port forwarding in place, I tested VPN externally but it didn't connect.
I've done the following so far to no avail:
Double & triple checked the port forwards, deleted & recreated the rules a few times to be sure
There are no other pre-existing L2RP/IPSec port forward rules or otherwise conflicting port forward rules (e.g.: another rule for ports 500, 1701 or 4500)
There was an L2TP port triggering rule enabled, that I toggled on and off with no change
Verified the firewall on VPN server had an exclusion for L2TP, or that the firewall is off. (Firewall is off to reduce a layer of complexity, but it worked internally to begin with so I doubt that's the issue.)
Since it works internally, and there are no entries in the logs on the device indicating inbound connections, I'm convinced its an issue with the Verizon Actiontec router. But unfortunately, I'm not sure what else to try or where else to look to troubleshoot this. For instance, is there a log on the router that I can view in real time (e.g.: tail) that would show me whether or not the inbound connection attempt is reaching the device, and whether or not the device allowed or blocked it?
My router details:
Verizon Actiontec
MI424WR-GEN2
Revision E
Firmware 20.21.0.2
Verizon Actiontec built-in L2TP/IPSec rule templates. They're not currently in use, but are baked into the firmware for easy configuration/selection from a drop down menu.
Solved!
Go to Solution.normally a vpn on that router, will have a GRE tunneling protocol as well.
two ways to build the PF rules,
Manually
Preconfigured
I know the preconfigured VPN rules will do the GRE protocol as well, but if you do it by hand you can't get it. -
Need urgent help in configuring Client to Site IPSec VPN with Hairpinning on Cisco ASA5510 - 8.2(1).
The following is the Layout:
There are two Leased Lines for Internet access - 1.1.1.1 & 2.2.2.2, the latter being the Standard Default route, the former one is for backup.
I have been able to configure Client to Site IPSec VPN
1) With access from Outside to only the Internal Network (172.16.0.0/24) behind the asa
2) With Split tunnel with simultaneous assess to internal LAN and Outside Internet.
But I have not been able to make tradiotional Hairpinng model work in this scenario.
I followed every possible sugestions made in this regard in many Discussion Topics but still no luck. Can someone please help me out here???

Neither Adding dynamic NAT for 192.168.150.0/24 on outside interface works, nor does the sysopt connection permit-vpn works
Please tell what needs to be done here, to hairpin all the traffic to internet comming from VPN Clients.
That is I need clients conected via VPN tunnel, when connected to internet, should have their IP's NAT'ted against the internet2-outside interface address 2.2.2.2, as it happens for the Campus Clients (172.16.0.0/16)
I'm not much conversant with everything involved in here, therefore please be elaborative in your replies. Please let me know if you need any more information regarding this setup to answer my query.
Thanks & Regards
maxsHi Jouni,
Thanks again for your help, got it working. Actually the problem was ASA needed some time after configuring to work properly ( ?????? ). I configured and tested several times within a short period, during the day and was not working initially, GUI packet tracer was showing some problems (IPSEC Spoof detected) and also there was this left out dns. Its working fine now.
But my problem is not solved fully here.
Does hairpinning model allow access to the campus LAN behind ASA also?. Coz the setup is working now as i needed, and I can access Internet with the NAT'ed ip address (outside-interface). So far so good. But now I cannot access the Campus LAN behind the asa.
Here the packet tracer output for the traffic:

The problem here as you can see is the Rule for dynamic nat that I added to make hairpin work at first place

Is it possible to access both
1)LAN behind ASA
2)INTERNET via HAIRPINNING
simultaneously via a single tunnel-group?
If it can be done, how do I do it. What changes do I need to make here to get simultaneous access to my LAN also?
Thanks & Regards

Internet access via hairpinning for Spoke to Hub IPSec VPN
I have a hub and spoke configuration with a number of site-to-site IPsec VPNs from 857's terminating on an 1811 at the hub. Also in the mix is a client-to-site (EZVPN) which also terminates at the hub.
I need to ensure all traffic destined for the internet goes out through the hub 1811. I've looked at trying to use a form of hairpinning so that "interesting traffic" from remote sites gets NATted at the hub router to the internet.
I have seen a number of configurations (in these forums) where internet-directed traffic from EZVPN clients is forced via a hairpin out via the hub router. I am trying to emulate that feature with the site-to-site IPSec VPNs - where internet directed traffic from spokes must go through the hub router, and not be permitted to go directly to the internet from the spoke routers.
Attached are configs for the hub router and one of the spoke routers, and a pdf diagram.
I can get traffic to the internet (in my test lab) from the lookback connector (1.1.1.1) by extended command pings, I have connectivity from the spoke1 lan to the hub lan (pings again); but not from the spoke1 lan to the internet via the hub router.
Thanks in advance for any help
PhilThanks, guys. Yes, those two access lists did need some attention.
I've changed the access list on the spoke router from
access-list 120 permit ip 192.168.8.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.0.0 0.0.255.255
to
access-list 120 permit ip 192.168.8.0 0.0.0.255 any
which allows traffic from the spoke lan out to the internet via the hub router. I've also taken NAT off the spoke router.
But I also need to change the matching access list on the hub router. I changed the old access list from
access-list 121 permit ip 192.168.0.0 0.0.255.255 192.168.8.0 0.0.0.255
to
access-list 121 permit ip any 192.168.8.0 0.0.0.255
but I couldn't pass any traffic over the VPN. If I remove access-list 121 completely, then traffic does pass, but the crypto map on the hub router becomes "incomplete".
When the tunnel is up, and passing traffic, I can ping an internet address (in my lab), but not all traffic is getting through. Every second ping times out, often there are 3 or 4 pings that time out.
Any suggestions as to what to do with the access list (121) on the hub router, and what can I do to get more reliable results (i.e. get every ping to work)?
TIA
Phil -
[SOLVED]Connecting to L2TP/IPSec VPN problem: pppd seems not starting
I'm trying to connect to an L2TP/IPsec VPN server, by ipsec-tools + xl2tpd.
Here is my setup:
/etc/racoon.conf:
log debug;
path pre_shared_key "/etc/racoon/psk.txt";

/etc/racoon/psk.txt:
#broadband
137.189.192.201 the-server-psk
137.189.192.204 the-server-psk
Here the two IPs are the IPs of vpn.cuhk.edu.hk, which is the VPN server.
/etc/xl2tpd/xl2tpd.conf:
[global]

Then I do the following:
# 192.168.1.1 is my lan gateway
sudo ip route add 137.189.192.201 via 192.168.1.1
sudo ip route add 137.189.192.204 via 192.168.1.1

sudo systemctl start racoon
sudo systemctl start xl2tpd
echo "c connect" | sudo tee /var/run/xl2tpd/l2tp-control
I expect that some network interface like ppp0 will be created, but nothing happened.
Then I check the record, and find something weird in xl2tpd log (from journalctl, racoon and sudo logs skipped):

I think pppd should have showed more logs, rather than just loading a module.
But I have no idea about what's wrong.
Or did I just forget to turn on the log function of pppd? If so, how should I turn it on?
Anyone can help?

Today I decrypted the IPSec ESP packets by Wireshark (what an awesome function) and compared the L2TP message of my ArchLinux and MacOSX to the same VPN Server.
And I found that while both ArchLinux and MacOSX sends Incomming_Call_Connection (ICCN) packet, the packet are quite different:
The ArchLinux ICCN Packet has 2 additional AVP fields: Random Vector AVP and RX Connect Speed AVP.
Also, the Connect Speed AVP (and also the RX Connect Speed AVP) field is 0, which is different from MacOSX (100000).
After the ICCN packet, MacOCX sends a PPP packet over L2TP, while ArchLinux sends nothing and the server sends a Call_Disconnect_Notification to ArchLinux.
Anyone knows whether this is a bug or something wrong in config?

Site 1 = Cisco ISA 500. Named as CHI
Site 2 = Cisco RV042. Named as Alabang
Shown above is the logs from my ISA 570 IPSec VPN. I have set the same settings for my IKE Policies and my Transform Sets. Attached are the screenshots of my the VPN Settings of my 2 systems. It does show in the table above that the 112.209.172.XXX is unreachable, but please look at screen6.bmp and see that I can very well ping the RV042 system. Please feel free to ask me for more info about my setup.
On a side note, take a look at Screen5.bmp. This screenie shows that I have an existing WORKING VPN connection to another site with a Linksys RV042, named as Villa. So as you can also see in the screenshot, it has a VPN setup for CHI but it can not connect. Hence my problem above. The VPN setting for Villa is the same as CHI (PFS, IKE, Transforms, PFS).Dan,
Since I'm not a Cisco employee, don't have access to spare ISAs and RVs to setup a lab and test, don't have a setup similar enough to yours to test with, don't have access to your devices, and wouldn't have other than UI access if I did, doing a little trial and error is all I have to work with to assist you.
That said, it's not random trial and error. From what I'm able to see via your screenshots and explanations, all of your config looks correct. So if everything for Phase 1 & 2 are accurate, then it should work unless there is an interesting traffic mismatch.
Usually this is pretty straightforward and simple to troubleshoot and confirm. However when you add in additional challenges that come with Multi-WAN support, terminating the VPN on the secondary WAN interface, and PBR, there is a lot of room for possible mistakes as the config is becoming fairly complex.
So my thought was to remove what I perceived to be the least impacting piece of complexity, which is the custom PBR that is sending those 2 laptops out WAN 2 instead of WAN 1, so that the only non-typical configuration was the VPN terminating on WAN 2.
Right now I'm assuming the issue isn't the the possibility of the ISA and RV042 being incapable of establishing a VPN. I'm assuming it is either an issue with VPN termination on WAN 2 (which I don't believe is an issue) or something not quite right with PBR and VPN interesting traffic.

How to nat subnets before establishing site to site ipsec vpn tunnel?
Hello,
Coming across requirement which is new to me as I have not done this setup. Details as follows. Hope some1 can help.
Requirement: nat existing subnets to 192.168.50.0/24 subnet which is allowed at another firewall.
Existing device: Cisco 5510 where I need to do this NAT.
Existing scenario in short: I have created vlans on asa by creating sub interfaces.
Changes done: added new sub int for 192.168.50.0. Added new object as 192.168.50.0 . Now done with creation of acl where traffic from 192.168.50.0 to remote subnets allowed. In NAT object sections done nating 1 to 1 I.e. existing subnet to 192.168.50.0
Done ipsec vpn setup inc phase 1 & 2.
Now tried to ping remote hosts but not reachable.
Pls advice how to make it work.
I dont any router next to asa 5510. Asa is in routed mode. Next hop to asa is isp's mux.Hello. Pls find my answers inline
I first got the picture that the NAT network is 192.168.50.0/24 and some other networks should be NATed to this.
Answer: Thats correct.
Later on it seems that you have configured this to some interface on the ASA?
Answer: Yes as I have defined vlan's on ASA itself. i.e. other subnets too i.e. 10.x series & 192.168.222.x series. I used Ethernet 0/0 as main interface for all LAN networks and have created sub interfaces i.e. vlan's on it. Using 3COM switch down to ASA to terminate those vlan's & distribute to unmanaged switches. Due to port limitations on ASA I have configured vlans on ASA itself. Ethernet 0/2 is my WAN interfacei.e. ISP link terminates on Eth 0/2 port.
So are you attempting to NAT some other LAN networks to this single NAT network before the traffic heads to the L2L VPN connection on your ASA?
Answer: Yes thats right. Attempting to NAT multiple networks to single NAT before traffic head to L2L VPN connecting from my ASA 5510 to remote Citrix firewall.
Can you then mention what are the source networks and source interfaces for these networks? What is the destination network at the remote end of the L2L VPN connection?
Answer: Source networks = 10.100.x series & 192.168.222.x series / Destination networks are from 192.168.228.x , 192.168.229.x series. Remote admin wants us to NAT our multiple subnets to single subnet i.e. 192.168.50.0 and then traffic from this subnet is allowed at remote end.
Do you want to just do a NAT Pool of the 192.168.50.0/24 network for all your Internet users OR does the remote end also have to be able to connect to some of your sites hosts/servers?
Answer: Yes just want to NAT LAN subnets to 192.168.50.0/24 for all LAN users. 1 way access. I am going to access remote servers.
The new thing for me is how to NAT multiple subnets. I have existing ipsec vpn's where I have added multiple subnets which is traditional set up for me. This requirement is new to me. -
Hi,
I'm in the process of migrating some old IOS IPsec VPN configurations from IOS to ASA.
What immediately becomes a problem is that there is no way to virtualize the routing tables on a single ASA. The original IOS setups uses separate VRF:s for each customers and therefore overlapping LAN networks or even VPN pools aint a problem.
This has been in the past avoided (in other ASAs) by using default route for each customer interface on the ASA (with different metric). With this we can have overlapping LAN networks for the customer. Though the limit for the customer links become = metric value range. So basically even if we had an ASA with support for 1000 Vlans we still couldnt use this setup as we would run out of usable metric values for the default routes pointing to the customer links/networks.
So looking at the above situation it seems we would just need to have a load of ASAs with support for 250 Vlans handling each customer groups and not a single ASA which could handle all the VPNs (if theres more than the mentioned approx. 250)
Another option is I guess using a single link on the ASA for all the customer with a tunneled default route and handling the virtualisation on the core device by using PBR to route the packets to different VRF. This in turn would create alot of more configurations on the core device and a single VPN configuration/connection would become harder to manage.
Has anyone run into a similiar situation and how have you handled it? Have you moved to another device manufacturer or sticked with the IOS perhaps? Its unfortunate that the ASA can't handle this by itself.
- JouniHi,
I've heard from our local Cisco contact that L2L VPN is coming. (Though in his words most people were waiting for Client VPN support, as were we) L2L VPN only provides minimal help to our situation as most connections are Client VPN.
Basically the ultimate goal is to eventually migrate all IPsec Client VPN users to start using AnyConnect.
The goal now is to get the old IPsec Client and L2L VPNs of the current device so we can remove the actual 6509/VPN/FWSM device from the network. (Because of the old hardware)
Even though we have newer IOS devices in our network we would rather keep the Client VPN off the IOS devices. So the idea was to quickly move the Client VPNs to ASA and L2L VPN to another IOS device (by moving the L2L VPN peer IP address to the newer IOS device along with the configurations)
We also started considering hosting the VPN services on a more high end device(s) which could support everything we need. In this case the ASA seemed a natural choice. Then again IOS gives alot more flexibility and the most important to us is the ability to virtualise routing.
I've read that AnyConnect VPN has also come to IOS devices.
Quick Google search gives this Cisco document
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5855/products_configuration_example09186a0080af314a.shtml#intro
How is the AnyConnect on IOS compared to ASA? Would IOS devices at some point (or already?) become a viable option for hosting all the VPNs? (The use of AnyConnect and Clientless VPN has kept us away from continuing with IOS)
Also on another note, I guess I missed one thing when writing the original post.
I guess you can actually use specific routes on the ASA for the overlapping customer networks with different metrics (instead of the default routes with different metrics) This would enable you to handle the routing for more customer links than when simply using default routes towards each customer link with different metric. As now each network range could overlap on 255 customers.
Heres a small sample of a lab configuration of that kind of situation
interface GigabitEthernet0/0
description TRUNK
no nameif
no security-level
no ip address
interface GigabitEthernet0/0.1000
description ASIAKAS-1
vlan 1000
nameif asiakas-1
security-level 100
ip address 172.32.100.2 255.255.255.0
interface GigabitEthernet0/0.2000
description ASIAKAS-2
vlan 2000
nameif asiakas-2
security-level 100
ip address 172.32.200.2 255.255.255.0
route asiakas-1 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 172.32.100.1 1
route asiakas-2 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 172.32.200.1 2
group-policy ASIAKAS-1-GP attributes
vlan 1000
group-policy ASIAKAS-2-GP attributes
vlan 2000
Basically to my understanding in the above situation the "vlan xxxx" configuration under group-policy defines the eggress interface of the traffic from the VPN and therefore the route for vlan2000/GigabitEthernet0/0.2000 would apply in the case (and provide the next-hop IP) where the VPN user was connecting with a connection using group-policy ASIAKAS-2-GP
I tested this setup and it seemed to work fine. Though this would naturally be an administrative nightmare to manage. (As would be the PBR solution mentioned in the original post)
I'm not sure if I'm making any sense

Hello,
i try to setup a IPSEC VPN (Site-by-Site or if not possible Client-BySite) between a Netgear Pro Safe Router and Windows Server 2012.
The Problem: Tunnel is up and running, but no Ping, no traffic at all.
the Server 2012 uses HyperV and has one hardware-NIC with public ip, lets say 123.123.123.1.
if no site-by-site is possible in my situation with built-in-tools this server would be only a client-site which would "dial-up" to the netgear box.
the server has a second virtual NIC with IP 192.168.137.1. Routing and RAS is enabled, because there are two virtual other servers whichs has 192.168.137.2 and 192.168.137.3.
The Netgear-ProSafe has public ip 122.122.122.1 and LAN-Subnet 192.168.21.0/24.
I created the Tunnel in the Advanced-Firewall-Options-Window. Both, Windows and the Router, say, the VPN-Tunnel is okay. Also, i can see ESP-Packets with wireshark.
If i ping (from router to server and other direction) i get no response. Some people said, the RAS itselfe could not accept packages, but i tried from one of the virtual clients also (192.168.137.2) and no ping there also.
i tried to add a route for subnet 192.168.21.0 with 192.168.137.1 as gateway but that didn't helped also.
now, after all this time i spend today to this problem i'm a bit confused.
as i know vpn-connections there are always virtual devices, and routes for the vpn-subnets assigned to this device.
the windows firewall does not create any device, and it does not create any route - i suppose, this is because "routing and ras or windows firewall-service" does this work "internally". is that correct? do i need any routes?
i was wondering why the ICMP packet from my ping in wireshark had the public ip as source (123.123.123.1) and not the "internal" 192.168.137.1 - and i tried to restrict the vpn-rule only for the virtual internal NIC but this isn't possible, as
it is no option inside the gui.
it would be great if somebody could explain me how config and packages SHOULD look....i've never used the built-in vpn/ipsec/ras services before, so i don't know how things has to be for a correct working environment. also, i need a solution and any help
to solve the problem would be great also!
now i try to sleep one night - maybe i get some nice idea after some hours of sleeping. good night.
Addition: After some more tests i find out that if i change the local endpoint (endpoint 1) from the virtual network (192.168.137.0/24) to the public ip of the server (123.123.123.1) inside the tunnel-rule and inside the vpn-policy of the router i can access
the netgear and other devices in the remote-network 192.168.21.0 over this ip-adresses. ping is not working, but other things seems to work fine. i want to be able to ping as well ofcourse and this wired configuration looks wrong to me...can some network-professional
help out with an explanation?
Second Addition: I can set the Local Endpoint also to "any" and it does work - but ping still does not work :-(
Third Addition: The Ping does work if i disable the NAT-Functionality on the Physical NIC. ....mhm.....I would definitly recommend the usage of a virtual router instead using windows onboard-firewall to make the site-to-site tunnel!
as you can see in my linked thread above (Link)
this scenario is not supported from microsoft! you will run into problems!
we do run a hyperv virtual machine and install the wonderful distribution pfsense inside this box. pfsense is a software-linux-router with ipsec-functionality, which works like a charm!
and by the way i recommend to not use the products of netgear! they are expensive, very slow and the service is not good!
we have good experience with Vigor-Routers! They are less expensive, the Service is very good, and the devices are much faster, AND! ...the vpn-connections stay stable up!
this experience was very time-intensive to make! hope this will help someone else in the future. -
Very slow Windows domain login over IPSec VPN
Hi
I'm experiencing very slow Windows domain logins over an IPSec VPN connection. The AD is in Site 1, some users are in Site 2. Two Cisco ASA firewalls connect both sites by an IPSec VPN over the Internet.
I made some registery changes on the Windows XP client on site2 to let Kerberos communicate over TCP instead of UDP. Still the logins take extremely long (45 minutes). Profiles are very small, so there had to be a problem with Kerberos, MTU sizes or somethin like that. I already changed the clients MTU settings to 1000 byes, but login is still very slow. I made some sniffer logs...
Does anybody know what the problem can be ?
Regards
RemcoHi Remco,
The most common issue with slowness over VPN is going to be fragementation. In general below are the recommendations to avoid fragmentation
1. For TCP traffic, use "ip tcp adjust-mss 1360" on the Internal LAN Interface on the Router. If you are using GRE then configure "ip mtu 1400" under the Tunnel Interface.
If you are not using GRE then the value of "ip tcp adjust-mss" depends on the type of transform-set being used E.g. AES\3DES etc, so you can increase the value of TCP adjust command from 1360 to a higher value. Though I will start from 1360 first for testing.

Establishing L2TP/IPSEC vpn
I have a new laptop, running Windows 8.1 Pro. I am trying to set up an L2TP/IPSEC vpn to my office.
I have created the connection, and filled in the various settings including PSK, but whenever I try and connect it fails with Error 789. I have checked this against my Windows XP / Vista / 7 laptops (which all work fine), and the VPN setup details are all
identical. It works fine on all the other laptops, but not on Windows 8.1.
Is there something special about Windows 8.1 that would prevent this from working?Hi,
Please check the solution in this thread:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/630488b8-e638-488d-803a-08ef9281e4fb/windows-7-ipsecl2tp-vpn-connection-problem
Also, please check solution “Error Code: 789, 835” in this article:
Troubleshooting common VPN related errors
http://blogs.technet.com/b/rrasblog/archive/2009/08/12/troubleshooting-common-vpn-related-errors.aspx
Since this issue can also be caused by third-part security program, please disable it and recreate the connection again to check the results.
Please take time to perform the steps above and let me know the results.
