TRUNCATE definition question

After a number of years working in Oracle development I (finally!) start to think about definitions.
According definition of DDL it is used to define the database structure or schema
Is there any other explanation why Oracle defines 'TRUNCATE' as DDL except it deallocates memory (and may be is not such conditional statement as ‘DELETE’)

Bob,
Let's prove the opposite, is TRUNCATE a DML statement? :-)
By definition:
Data manipulation language (DML) statements access and manipulate data in existing schema objects. These statements do not implicitly commit the current transaction.
Source: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/statements_1001.htm#i2099257
From the other hand:
A TRUNCATE statement does not generate any undo information and it commits immediately.
Therefore TRUNCATE is not a DML statement, hence it is a DDL statement :-)
Ok, let's be more serious.
Let's take a look at the following definition:
The execution of DDL statements differs from the execution of DML statements and queries, because the success of a DDL statement requires write access to the data dictionary.
Source:http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/sqlplsql.htm#sthref3520
I think this is a big difference.
In order to see it you can always turn extended trace 10046, level 12 on and check what goes on in the background when you execute TRUNCATE vs when you execute INSERT/DELETE/UPDATE.
TRUNCATE always updates TAB$ and OBJ$ tables. Now, can we say it changes the data structure? I think yes.

Mihajlo

  • Client Definition Question

    I asked this question in another forum here, got some helpful feedback and a recommendation to post the question here as it might be more fitting for some in this group.
    In getting ready to teach a class, I've been putting together my set of SAP terms and getting ready to explain them to the class. I've been cross referencing the SAP Glossary and other sources to try to give as correct a definition as possible. In looking at these, one element I've been wondering about is the SAP definition of a client within SAP ERP.
    The SAP glossary defines client as "In commercial, organizational, and technical terms, a self-contained unit in an SAP system with separate master records and its own set of tables." I find the last phrase in that definition (which I've italicized) to be puzzling. In an instance where multiple clients are sharing the same underlying database, each client does not have its own set of tables. To my knowledge that's not a required element of a client. (That's why the mandt field is so common in tables.)
    So...why is that phrase a part of the definition and what is SAP intending it to mean?  Is a distinction being drawn here between logical segregation of content (vs. actual segregation)? Or is there something here that I'm just not understanding?
    As an example of what I'm talking about, if we have one instance of SAP ERP that has multiple activie clients, and If we were to take table T001 which contains company code information mapped to a particular client, wouldn't all the clients in that instance be sharing that same table?
    I realize that logically if one uses transaction SE16 to view the table from within SAP ERP, only the information for the client one is working within is shown. My thinking had been that if one were to look at this table directly in the DBMS, the table would show all of the clients active within this instance. So in that sense each client is using the same set of tables with logical segregation of data based on the MANDT field. (i.e. if I had 3 clients running on one SAP instance tied to an Oracle backend, the backend would not have 3 totally independent databases for each client.)
    Am I missing something here, or is the definition of client a bit misleading?

    Hi Tony,
    Pity that your question did not get a reply in more than two weeks.
    I am happy to say that I have never come across the "its own set of tables" statement. Whoever wrote that is either ignorant or a victim of a very bad mistranslation. A client is a logical "subdivision" of the data stored in a SAP database. I'm not old enough to confirm this, but when I started at SAP I was told that the client concept came from the time when several companies shared a single database on some large central mainframe and obviously could not be allowed to see each other's business data. Today the use of a client is different, e.g. it provides for separation between customizing and sandbox clients in a development system, or between say test and training clients in a QA system.
    Technically all clients share the same set of tables. A "client-dependent" table has the characteristic that its first field (and the leading field of its primary key) is always the client number. The "client-dependent" attribute is maintained in the SAP dictionary. When an ABAP program contains a statement like "SELECT * FROM TAB" and TAB is client-dependent, the DB interface in the kernel will automatically convert this to "SELECT * FROM TAB WHERE MANDT = "<client>". An SQL trace (ST05) of a simple business transaction will reveal this behaviour immediately.
    Not all tables are client-dependent, some are cross-client, i.e. their data is visible to and shared by all clients in the system. As a rule, all master/transaction tables are client-dependent, while system tables containing instance-specific rather than business-specific data (e.g. the list of printers) are cross-client. Customizing tables are mostly client-dependent but some are cross-client (I'm a technical consultant so I can't really tell you why that is).
    You are perfectly correct that if you look at a table at database level rather than through SE16, you would see records for all clients residing in the same table. Incidentally the same can be achieved in ABAP by adding the CLIENT SPECIFIED option to the SELECT statement but the code of business transactions must of course do no such thing.
    Also, the client concept is not specific to Oracle so the advice to post the question on the SAP/Oracle forum seems a little misleading. SAP implements the client concept regardless of the underlying database.
    Hope this clarifies things,
    Mark

  • Standard Client definition question

    In getting ready to teach a class I've been putting together my set of SAP terms and getting ready to explain them to the class.  I've been cross referencing the SAP Glossary and other sources to try to give as correct a definition as possible.  In looking at these one element I've been wondering about is the fairly universal definition of a client.
    The SAP glossary defines client as "In commercial, organizational, and technical terms, a self-contained unit in an SAP system with separate master records and its own set of tables."  I find the last phrase in that definition to be puzzling.  In an instance where multiple clients are sharing the same database each client does not have its own set of tables.  To my knowledge that's not a required element of a client. (That's why the mandt field is so common in tables.)
    Is a distinction being drawn here between logical segregation of content (vs. actual segregation)?  Or is there something here that I'm just not understanding.
    Thanks.

    Tony,
    Ah, you were talking about the underlying DBMS engine, not the application.
    When SAP is talks about tables, they are talking about the data structures within the application.  Clients do not share these tables (well, there are a few client independent tables).
    I misunderstood your original question. You are talking about the underlying DBMS, which also stores data in tabular form.  Yes, the DBMS structures do store data from multiple clients.
    When SAP passes requests for action to the underlying DBMS, such as oracle, the application 'knows' where the data is stored, and uses the keys generated within the app to perform reads and writes on the databases.
    I am not a Basis expert, so I can't speak with authority about T001 or other specific SAP tables, and it's relationship to the underlying database.  You might want to post your question in one of the more techie forums such as

  • High Definition Question - Please Help!!

    I have a HDD camcorder and I record on the highest possible HD setting. I than import my clips into iMovie 08 using the "Full" 1440 x 1080 setting. My question is . . . . . between iMovie and iDVD what are the steps I need to take to get that HD picture I recorded in onto my 52' HD TV?
    Thank you for your help.
    Nkulu

    hey there Nkulu,
    iDVD doesn't support or author(create) Hi-Def DVDs. it will only do Standard-Def DVDs. look into Roxio's Toast 9 & it's HD plug-in to create HD video discs on your Mac.
    good luck.

    I am much closer.  Tomcat is putting some key messages in the console and I overlooked them.  It looks like I am closer than I thought.  The request looks like its getting received, but my service blows up on response due to I think two class not found issues.  But, I can't tell what classes are missing.

    it looks like your Tomcat is missing the JTA setting.
    Tomcat
    To use LiveCycle Data Services with Tomcat when not using the integrated Tomcat configuration, install support for the Java Transaction API (JTA). You might also have to install several other libraries depending on the features that you plan to use. Follow these steps after deploying the LiveCycle Data Services WAR files. These steps are not necessary for the integrated Tomcat installation.
    Stop Tomcat.
    To install support for JTA, a recommended implementation is the Java Open Transaction Manager (JOTM), which is a fully functional open source stand-alone transaction manager.
    Download JOTM from http://jotm.objectweb.org.
    Copy the JAR files from jotm-root/lib to [tomcat-root]/common/lib.
    Create a context file for your web application and register JOTM using the Transaction element. For example, for the samples WAR create a tomcat-root/conf/Catalina/localhost/lcds-samples.xml file and add the following lines:CONTEXT antijarlocking="false" antiresourcelocking="false"   docbase="${catalina.home}/webapps/lcds-samples" path="/lcds-samples"   privileged="true">  <TRANSACTION factory="org.objectweb.jotm.UserTransactionFactory"   jotm.timeout="60"></TRANSACTION></CONTEXT>
    Note: If a context file exists for your web application, add the <TRANSACTION> element under the <CONTEXT> element.
    Increase the maximum memory to at least 512 MB by specifying the maximum heap size for the JVM in the JAVA_OPTS variable: -Xmx512m
    (Optional) To enable custom authentication, locate the Tomcat security resource libraries under install_root/resources/security/tomcat.
    Place the flex-tomcat-common.jar and flex-tomcat-server.jar files in the tomcat/lib folder.
    Add the following line to the context descriptor file for your web application:
    <VALVE classname="flex.messaging.security.TomcatValve"></VALVE>
    You can now perform authentication against the current Tomcat realm. Usually, the default configuration for authentication stores user information in conf/tomcat-users.xml. See the Tomcat documentation for more information on realms. See the LiveCycle Data Services documentation for more information on custom authentication.
    You might also have to update the active <LOGIN-COMMAND> in /WEB-INF/flex/services-config.xml in each deployment of a LiveCycle Data Services WAR file. For Tomcat, ensure that the TomcatLoginCommand is active in the <SECURITY>section:<SECURITY><LOGIN-COMMAND server="Tomcat"></LOGIN-COMMAND>...</SECURITY>
    (Optional) To use the JMSAdapter with the Message Service, install and configure a JMS provider (such as ActiveMQ or openJMS) for use with Tomcat.
    Restart Tomcat.

    Hopefully this will help.

  • DTD Element Definition Question.

    Is it possible to define an ELEMENT in a DTD that limits what values that can be entered in the ELEMENTs text? For example, I want to limit what can be put in the ELEMENT Hazard to the text values of "Yes" or "No" and nothing else can be entered.
    1) <!ELEMENT Hazard ('Yes' | 'No') >
    or
    2) <!ELEMENT Hazard (Yes | No) >
    In example 2, don't 'Yes' and 'No' need to be elements themselves? And if so, then this is not what I want. I need to limit the Hazard tags text value to only be "Yes" or a "No":
    <Hazard>Yes</Hazard>
    or
    <Hazard>No</Hazard>
    No other text values can be entered.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    To do what you want you need to use an empty element and an attribute which you can enumerate. Ex: <Hazard state="YES"/>
    <!ELEMENT Hazard EMPTY>
    <!ATTLIST Hazard
    STATE ( YES | NO )>

  • High Definition question(s)

    I've been thrust into the job of producing dvds for my company and I'm having fun with it for sure. We bought an HD DV camera and I've been under the assumption that we would be able to produce HD dvds, and that people who viewed them who had HD players could get the HD benefits, while others who viewed on regular non-HD players/tvs could still view correctly, just not in HD. Am I way off on this? Is the extra advantage of hd dv footage moot when it comes to authoring on iDVD? I know that I can't burn a high def dvd in my MacbookPro burner, but I been thinking that I could produce the HD iMovie/iDVD to burn on either with a commercial DVD duplicating company or, we're considering investing in a duplicating machine ourselves. (We need to be able to produce variations of a dvd over the course of a season, so sending out for 500 copies won't be cost effective.)
    Any guidance would be much appreciated, thanks!!
    Bimp

    Am I way off on this?
    You will find that HD shows up as SD on most macs and set top DVD Players. And the reason for this is that iDVD will not burn an HD DVD. For that you would need an HD / BlueRay Burner (along with supported software and drivers) which i-Apps do not yet support (to the best of my knowledge). However the Pro Apps / DVDSP / Toast might offer a few more workable solutions in this same scenario when combined with a Blueray / HD Burner. At least this is what have been reading throughout this forum. None of the above is derived from any personal experience whatsoever on my part; since i'm still burning standard iDvd's in 4:3 format (for the most part).

  • Function definition question

    Hi all, I am a first time poster, long time Flash user, who is trying to wrap his head around AS3.
    When writing functions, I am unclear on on the part that goes inside the parentheses.  For instance, I have see some functions that say:
    function XXXXXXX (event:MouseEvent) {
    and then some that say:
    function XXXXXXX (e:TimerEvent) {
    and I think even some that say:
    function XXXXXXX (somethingElse:something) {
    I get the parts that go after the colon, it is the part before the colon that confuses me.  There seems to be many different posiblities that go before the colon.
    How do you know which one, which syntax to use when coding?
    By chance they aren't all interchangeable are they?
    If not, is there a list that works with the "event:", a different list that works with "e:", etc?
    Thanks in advance

    what goes before the colon is the variable name.  This is what you use inside the function to refer to the (in this instance) event that is passed in.  This is completely changeable - you could make it gobbledygook:MouseEvent if you wanted to.  Typically best practices state that you should name variables based on their content, so that is why you see event:VideoEvent frequently, and often the shortened version e:VideoEvent.
    And, for a little more explanation.
    These event parameters (e:MouseEvent) are what is passed when the function is fired from an event listener. (someButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,doClick);)
    You don't need to put anything inside of the parentheses if nothing is getting passed into the function.  For example:
    function doSomething():void {
    trace("something");
    This function doesn't need anything in the parentheses, because nothing is getting passed in.  It would be called by a simple doSomething(); in the code.

  • Quick definition question

    I dont know the correct terminology used when you wish to call one variable in a class to another class. I dont know how to do it properly and want to know what I should look for in the java tutorials.
    tks in advance

    I think one of the terms "field", "attribute", or "property", depending on the author, should do the job.

  • Experience Definition question

    New to 6 so try to sort my thoughts, we need to have a custom login/logout page and land the logged in user in a specific community.
    1. How do I get the link to the customized login page (I need the link of login page for a reason, don't want the community link and any redirect).
    2. Is this the right thing to do: Define an ED that has the community as home page and define a guest user that has the customized login/logout page.
    3. What is the best way to define the ED rule? I don't want other user in our current portal to get affected.
    Thanks!

    I will try to provide answers in reverse order.
    3. What is the best way to define the ED rule? I don't >want other user in our current portal to get affected.It depends. If you want to provide different ED's even for different guest users (for example, you want to have different look and feel for login screens) then the <only?> way to do it is to specify ED that depends on different URL.
    The simplest way to check how does it work is to use portal host name for URL1 and, say, IP address (the same host) for URL 2.
    So you can have different look and feel for different URL's and unsecured areas (guests).
    You can even setup using SSO for ED1 and reqular AWS for ED2.
    For authenticated users you can use much more different rules, like groups, administrative folders and so on.
    2. Is this the right thing to do: Define an ED that has >the community as home page and define a guest user that >has the customized login/logout page.Yes, you can setup community and home page over there and use login portlet (provided by aqualogic or your own).
    There is on trick here. You will need to setup "GuestRedirectToLogin" variable in portalconfig.xml file to "1". It's "0" by default an you will see standart portal login page (and you don't want this, because you need your community home page).
    1. How do I get the link to the customized login page (I
    need the link of login page for a reason, don't want the
    community link and any redirect).I am not sure what do you exactly mean saying "customizid login page"?
    You have community, there is login page over there that unsecured. This page is a community page, so this is aqualogic object. This page may be customized like any other page (layout,CSS). This page may also have LOGIN portlet that you are responsible to write (for example, by using tags) and by customizing one. There is example to do it here:

  • Can I use the Apple Discussion software?

    I have my own web server and I was looking for some good forum software. I usually use phpBB. However, I started dreaming of forum software that would be great and remembered how much I like the Apple Discussions forums.
    I am sure the answer is no, but it does not hurt to ask. Does Apple have any plans to make their forums software available for other people to use?
    If this is not the proper forum for this topic, I apologize. It did not seem to fit anywhere else.

  • Wrapping text output

    Is there anyway in PL/SQL that I can force output to wrap to the next line? I'm working on a report that shows questionnaire questions and some of them are pretty long. My current setup truncates the question if it goes past 60 characters, anymore than that it the formatting of the report is messed up. What I'd like it to do is when 60 characters are reached, it should wrap to the next line like Word and even report builder does. Is this possible?
    I have the following procedure to format the output:
    PROCEDURE put ( string IN CHAR, pad IN CHAR := 'N'
         , pad_num IN NUMBER := 0 ) IS
    cen_pad          number ;
    string2           varchar2(255) ;
    BEGIN
    string2 := nvl(string,' ') ;
    if pad in ('C','c') then
    cen_pad := floor(( pad_num - length(string2) ) / 2) ;
    for i in 1 .. cen_pad loop
    string2 := ' '||string2 ;
    end loop ;
    string2 := rpad(string2,pad_num,' ') ;
    elsif pad in ('R','r') then
    string2 := rpad(string2,pad_num,' ') ;
    elsif pad in ('L','l') then
    string2 := lpad(string2,pad_num,' ') ;
    elsif pad = 'N' then
    null ;
    end if ;

    As well as this one to print a new line:
    PROCEDURE putl(string2 in char) IS
    BEGIN
    dbms_output.put_line(string2);

    Is there some way I could modify these to make this happen or is there some other way to do it?

  • Audio levels different from camera to Premiere Pro

    Why is it that the audio levels on the camera can show the subject peaking right above -10dB, but when I bring the clips into Premiere, they are below -12dB and I always have to boost them?
    Just to test this, I cranked up the volume on our camera's inputs to the point where it was clipping. When I took this clip into Premiere it still wasn't hitting 0dB. It was peaking into the yellow, even though the clip was completely distorted because of the clipping coming into the camera.
    Is there a way to calibrate either Premiere Pro or our camera so that they match, so when you are peaking at -6dB on the camera, it's the same in Premiere Pro?
    I know the solution probably involves a tone generator being used with the camera, which we have, but I'm not exactly sure what to do.

    What I think is you have run into is definitions of the dB. One has dBm and dBV in the electrical world, among a lot of others (for example sound pressure/power and different types like dBA, dBC, and so on within sound levels).
    Anyway, to make this not to be a too deep lesson in deciBel (dB), it seem like your cameras define 0dB to be something different than what Premiere defines it to be. The dB presentation (what the display shows) is a logarithmic number depending on a reference level, meaning in this case, if the voltage (sound turned into electricity) hits for example 1 Vrms then we'll call that 0dB (which is probably what Premiere does, and maybe your camera uses 0,775 Vrms as 0dB reference).
    Clear as mud so far, right, just wait for the following. Just kidding, but look up decibel in google, and you'll find a pretty complex world.
    Bottom line:
    I don't think you can get the dB levels in Premiere and your cameras to match, unless your cameras have a setting that defines the 0dB level. The best you can do, in my opinion, is to learn the difference and go from there as you have ("I always have to boost them"). But, also remember that if you do some audio stuff in Premiere that you want to record back onto tape, you'll have to go the other way, lessen the audio level.
    Reference levels made by a tone generator is a fine way to learn the differences.

    EDIT: Allthough it probably is a definition question, just never let your camera go over 0dB. As you have noticed, it will be distorted sound. The electric circuits on your camera won't handle over 0dB well.

  • Adobe Flash keeps crashing my MacBook Pro

    I've got the following setup:
    1.83Ghz Intel Core Duo (Early 2006) MacBook Pro 15" (MacbookPro 1,1)
    It's got 1GB RAM and an 80GB Hard Drive.
    Fresh, clean install of OS X 10.6 (updated to 10.6.8 through Software Update).
    Albeit having a malfunctioning keyboard (which I have disabled via Terminal) and a battery that needs to be replaced, I was having one very frustrating problem:
    The d*mn thing kept shutting down unexpectedly. I don't mean a "PS I'm about to turn off, kay?" shut down but a full fledge cut the power, cut the cable, this girl is GONE kinda shut down. It was driving me NUTS! I dismantled, swapped out RAM, checked wires for melted insulation, re-installed OS X countless times...
    WHAT IS CAUSING THIS?!?!

    No need to wait for an answer - I've already figured it out... I just wanted to make sure there was a definitive question, followed by an answer for anyone else who may be researching this type of issue in the future (as I have not found anything particularly helpful elsewhere)...
    I started by running the CPU through a stress test, thinking that perhaps the laptop was overheating and forcing a shutdown. Terminal>"yes". Five minutes and no shut down.
    Okay, maybe I will try the GPU...
    Sadly, I couldn't get the AHT to load. Sooo... I turn to the internet. At first I'm spending hours looking for the Image file of the Hardware Test and trying to get it to boot from a USB drive to no avail. Finally, I Google something along the lines of "GPU stress test" and choose the first option - some sort of Adobe Flash applet that allows you to set parameters for an intensive GPU test. I click "Start" on the Adobe Flash content and BOOM - laptop shuts down.
    Hmmm... I pop over to the "Chrome://plugins" menu.
    "Details"
    Adobe Flash
    There are two instances of Adobe Flash. One of them being "pepperflash". DISABLE THAT SHIZ.
    Pepperflash has been a hindrance since I was testing a CR-48 Chromebook. The vain of my existence. So many issues because of pepperflash. And now it's forcing my MacBook to shut down!!! Disabled that sucker, and sure as the world is flat: I don't get random shutdowns.
    I might add, when I say "shut down" I may mean "restart"... I don't know if maybe I had "Restart automatically" selected at any point in time, which would have resulted in restarts during the course of my reinstallations.

  • XP Mode in Windows7 Professional Drops Network connectivity

    Ok - I've seen and followed several (5+) discussions on this problem dating back 4 years through Vista, but no one seems to have posted a definitive question.  I've been rolling out Windows 7 for over a year now and have been following the same procedure
    and installing the same apps to the same configuration without issues until this week,  I now have 2 boxes doing the same behaviour.
    Environment:
    Workstation is a PowerSpec B634 with Intel motherboard, using onboard RealTec NIC.  Windows 7 Professional, with Microsoft's Virtual XP vhd.  They are connected only via the ethernet NIC (wireless is disabled) on a 1GB connection.  I've moved
    the port on the switch they've been connected to and switched both the patch cable at the rack and the ethernet cable at the workstation.  And, as I've said I'm seeing this behaviour on 2 separate boxes.
    Behaviour:
    Unit boots flawlessly and I've not seen any connection issues on the Windows7 side of the world (i.e. Outlook isn't reporting disconnects from Exchange and the NIC isn't reporting loss of connection.) However, in the virtual XP side I can launch the virtual
    XP, and then start my database application.  It finds the database network share (mapped through the virtual xp as a drive letter to "//tsclient/drive" referencing a share on the host Windows7 machine.  The application runs great up to
    10 minutes at which point the connection to the network drops as the database client loses all pointers to it's tables and references and crashes.  If I start a remote desktop session from inside the vitual XP it also will run fine for a while then report
    the conenction has been broken.  At no time does the NIC icon in the virtual XP system tray report loss of network connection.
    I have turned off all power-saving settings in BIOS, Win7, and as much as I could find in virtual XP - - I'm really at a loss here, especially as I have 15 other machines of very similar specs and identical software installations working just fine, oh, and
    yes, I'm running SP1 and have downloaded all available patches.
    Hints tips suggestions and/or more questions all very much appreciated.

    Thaks for the suggestions - as noted in my original post:
    1) all power management for the NICs (which are integrated on the Intel Motherboard) have been switched off in BIOS, Power Management in both the Win7 host and XP virtual environment, and in Device Manager specific to the NIC I've switched of any power management
    options to force them to stay on at full speed/power at all times
    2) I have had this problem now with the computers plugged in to two different "patch to outlet" locations in the office (i.e. different in-wall wiring), plus have used two different wall to PC ethernet cables (which I have also pin verified with a fluke
    cable tester) and have used different patch bay to switch cables and have not only switched ports on the switch but have switched to a completely different switch.
    With those considerations taken into account I am continuing to see the issue.  The connectivity drop is occurring pretty regularly between 6 and 10 minutes of operation.
    3) sorry, yes, NICs are same model as both towers have same Intel motherboard.
