Trying to duplicate this "Energy Flow" effect (originally created in AE)

I created a couple variations on an energy glow effect in AE, here:

I think this should be easy to duplicate in Motion, but I'm going slightly nuts trying to figure it out. The effect is created by having some simple white circle particles with AE's Fast Blur and CC Vector Blur added. I know how to do something similar to Fast Blur in Motion, but I can't figure out how to achieve something equivalent to CC Vector Blur. There must be some way of creating something similar, though. Any Motion gurus out there care to help me save my sanity?
(I know there are somethings that AE can do, that Motion can't, but I don't think this is one. I would hope that Motion is able to do this)

First of all, thanks for intriguing me enough that I decided to waste my morning figuring this out.
Anyway, I watched the tutorial, and the conclusion I came to is that to attempt to duplicate the tutorial step by step is to undermine motion's capabilities.
Now, I will preface this by saying that my "energy flow" is not identical. But I think it looks really good. Also, I didn't work to modify it all that much, so I'm convinced that with a little tweaking, it'll look even better than the AE version.
Ok. When watching the AE tutorial, Andrew Kramer uses the CC Vector blur to turn circle particles into more of a smoky, curvy line. When looking at the way vector blur affected the particles, it reminded me of the caustics generator in Motion. So here's what I did.
First, I borrowed a pre-existing particle emitter that already looks like energy. You can find it in the library under the abstract folder in Particles. It's called Flow 01 interestingly enough. Then I adjusted the emission angle to 90 and the range to a small number like 7 or so. This gets the particles (which BTW are curved lines, not circles) moving to the right like the tutorial.
Then I increased the speed quite a bit, and the birth rate a little, and introduced some speed randomness. Again, you can tweak these to give this the look you want. Once I got the flow moving, I had to set up the distortion.
I created a new group and placed the caustics generator in there. I tweaked the generator so that the water-like ripples were small, bright, and had a high level of refraction. Then I applied a gaussian blur to the generator to soften the edges quite a bit.
Going back to my particle group, I added the Refraction filter from the Distortion folder. But (and this is important), I added it to the GROUP, not to the emitter. The reason has to do with a step below. I used the caustics generator as the source for the refraction (and turned off the caustics group as well) and made sure I had high levels of refraction and softness.
This more or less made my emitter look like a reflection in water, until I fixed the resolution for the group. Then I got the look I was going for.
And that is all there is to it. You'll still have to do the rest like duplicate the emitter, add an emitter that does the little flying particles, but the energy stream looks good to me.

    You can try contrast masking and high pass sharpening to create something like this effect. You might try smoothing the image using smart or surface blur after applying some of the contrast masking.

  • Trying to duplicate this type

    Just as an exercise, I'm trying to replicate this poster type with a single column of text in InDesign. With a series of underlines, rules, and various baseline shifts and extreme leading, I've come pretty close. I'm stuck on the "The." Is there any way to make that word be in front of the one below it? Thanks

    Right. It's important to note that for the red text to be on top it must come after the word strokes in the text flow, no matter how you do it.

    simple 90%-to-100% hover effect to "highlight" the thumbnail
    on mouseover.
    Micha recommended placing normal a highlighted versions of
    the same
    thumbnail inside and outside the viewport, and swapping them
    on mouseover.
    However, that would double the amount of image data being
    sent to the user.
    So what I thought to do, instead, is superpose a standalone
    PNG of a small
    spotlight, OVER the original thumbnail, on hover. Because it
    would be the
    same PNG being superposed over each thumb being hovered over,
    the amount of
    image data being sent to the user wouldn't be all that
    different.
    Would I need javascript for this, or can it be done with CSS
    only?
    Again, it would be the same spotlight.png file being
    superposed on images on
    mouseover, and it wouldn't be a big deal if the image bled
    over surrounding
    images (it would actually make it look more real).

    Looks wrong. Sould be something like:
       ON sourceEP.Tag_Id = enArch.Tag_Id
    And don't update the matching columns in the UPDATE part, as they already match.

  • Trying to duplicate effect... 3D? Perspective?

    I have an .eps file
    and I would like it to match this effect:
    and I can't seem to figure out how to do it. I've tried the 3D filter, I've messed around with the perspective grid (but I don't know what I'm doing there), I've tried to free-transform, etc.
    I'm all self-taught, so this seeming simple effect is proving very difficult for me. I want to do this in Illustrator so as to keep it as a vector. I know I recreate the effect in Photoshop, but then, of course, it'd be rasterized.
    If someone could give me an idea of tools/techniques I'd be very appreciative.
    I'm using CS6 on Windows 7.

    I was able to do something similar...
    I started with the edge being White with a 60% Black stroke > duped it and put it in the back adding 60% fill and nudged it to give the edge a slight thickness > duped again and removed the stroke for a White fill and nudged that in the back to give a White edge > duped the top shape again and applied a 40% Black stroke only, no fill > duped that and maipulated it to conform to the shadow exterior warp and gave that a White stroke > selected both the last two duped elements and applied a smooth blend > sent that blend to the back and I ended with the above file which could be grouped and sent to the back of the color file.
    The only thing I might do differently is apply a .5pt stroke instead 1pt stroke to the top element.  In your case, if you already have the "Blue" shape, you could do an offset path to get the edge shape that would conform exactly to your original shape.  But the entire outline and shadow effect can be done with copying the original offset path again and again to build the illusion of depth.

    If you are positive there is a good Wi-Fi signal in the area of the iPad I would first reboot your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem.
    If that doesn't work, I would turn off your iPad and then restart your Wi-Fi router. Unplug the router for 30 seconds then plug it back in. Once the router had completed its restart process and established a link to the Internet then turn your iPad on. Make sure Settings > Wi-Fi> On.

    How do I get this document deleted from the system?

    The suggestion to move items from documetns to desktop and then moving to trash is the one that worked.
    I have now one other question and that is that during my strugle with the original problem I called with Apple helpline and there they suggested to move the application "Preview" to trash and then the  issue would be solved. I did so but clearly the issue was not solved.
    Bottom line is that with your solution I got rid of the PDF files, but I still need to reinstall the Preview application. Do you have suggestions how to do that??

  • The website Kotaku brings me to a blank white page when i try do a search or click a link to an older post, it says done in the loading bar. Also had an error where I couldn't log in properly while trying to post this question on these forums.

    Yesterday I clicked the "link Facebook account" on the website www.kotaku.com.au. Prior to that I can't remember having this issue. Not sure if its related.
    My first idea was to use safe mode, which worked. so i disabled my addons in non-safe mode but it still didn't work.
    The only thing that solved the problem was clearing my cookies, so for now I have the cookies of kotaku blocked. Obviously not an ideal situation.
    I found these error message in console:

    I was originally going to post this as a website error, however when trying to ask this question using Firefox I was presented with my log in name and a log out button, rather than the Ask a New Question page. Once again, it worked fine when I disabled cookies.

    Thanks for the flag J.K. - they contaced me and solved my problem.  On this account (which I created just to ask this question), I log in with my email rather than my user name (mtalldud). On the account that I was having trouble with, they told me to use my user ID instead of my email to log in and it worked. This is a bit confusing and seems a bit inconsistent but at least I don't need this temporary account any more to get into this community and find answers!

    I've been having this problem too, but here's the catch: originally it was only with my dad, and only sometimes.  Now it's dad and husband, every time!  Pix go through, via imessage, to everyone else, and they go through to dad/husband if I "send as text" after it fails. 
    And the other annoying thing- the blue bar will run all the way, and it will say "delivered".  So I close out of imessage. When I reopen it again, the "delivered" has changed to "not delivered" with the red exclamation point.  I just googled "imessage not sending photos" and founds TONS of people with the same problem, but no solutions.  (I have rebooted phone, reset network settings, with no luck.  I even had to backup/delete/restore my whole phone the other day for a different reason, and hoped that would fix it, but now it won't send to my dad OR my husband (who is on not just the same carrier, but the same family plan as me)

    I am trying to duplicate a form on my iPad using Adobe Reader.  When I click on the copy/move icon the only option I get is move.  I noted in the help there should be a "duplicate" option.  I am using IOS 7 with the free version of the app.  Should I be able to duplicate, and if so how do I get this option to show up?

    In your library, right-click the song you want to edit.
    select "get info".
    go to "options" and select the start and stop times for your first section of the song.
    click "OK".
    Find the shortened version of the song in your library. It may take a minute for it to show up. right click it again and select "create (????) version". (the ???? is different for different formats).
    The library will spit out a new, second version of the song which you can rename. I suggest you use the original title and add a 1 to the end.
    Now you can go back to the other version and repeat the process with a different  start/stop time.
    Once you are done editing, you can burn all of your versions to a disk, just make sure your interval time is zero so there are no gaps between edits.
    To keep the orginal song on your library, just go back to the original and put the start/stop times back to the original settings.

    I am trying to optimize this simple query but the two methods I am trying actually make things worse.
    The original query is:

    The result set of this query returns me the first 100 rows in 88 seconds and they are all distinct by default (don't know why they are distinct).
    My first attempt was to try to use table joins instead of the IN conditions:

    I dont understand two things with this query. First issue, I now need to put in the distinct because the result set is not distinct by default. Second issue (very strange), when I put the rownum condition (<100) I get two rows in 1.5 seconds. If I remove the condition, I get 354 rows (whole result set) in 326 seconds.
    My second attempt was to use EXISTS instead of IN:

    The query below hangs when run in TOAD or PL/SQL Dev. I noticed there is no rows returned from the inner table for this condition.

  • Trying to get this code working

        So, I'm trying to make some smoke and I really like the way one looks I found online; however, I guess it was made in a previous version and some of the code is no longer support with the version I'm using with is CS3.
    Hopefully this is the right forum for this.  If not, please redirect me.  Any help getting this thing woring would be much appreciated.  The code comes from this site:

    He creates a movieclip called aPuff and then gives the movieclip an identifier of aPuff as well.  It seems identifiers are no longer used in CS3.

    Wrong forum.  That is AS2 code, not AS3 (CS3 can work with either).  Since you say you are getting a bunch of errors, you probably have the file's Publish Settings set up for AS3.  If you change them to AS2 that code might work.
