Trying to reorder text so that an Indesign created PDF reads correctly on Adobe Acrobat's Read Out L

I am trying to get a document to be read in the correct order by Adobe Acrobat's Read Out Loud function. I am using Indesign CS2 and creating a PDF file to be read by Adobe Acrobat Version 7.
I followed directions from sources online. I added all untagged items into the Structure window. I added alternative text to all the graphics fine. And the text areas are tagged as story. I then created a PDF used the Read out loud function, and it reads it all wrong! I then thought that by changing the hierarchy order of the tags that it would follow that list. But no! it still reads the same. I have tried a lot of things to get it to read right. I fiddled around with the acrobat preferences and now it just reads the alternative text?
I need help.

I haven't used it, but I think you need to use Acrobat's TouchUp Reading Order tool. I think that existed in Acrobat 7. Here's the accessibility page for Acrobat 9 on Adobe.com:
http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/products/acrobat/overview.html
If necessary, it might be necessary to upgrade to Acrobat 9 Pro.

What exactly does this mean? Your iMac doesn't authorize anything. Are you getting an error message or what message are you getting with regard to authorizing? The iPad is not authorized? What?
    No do not restore yet.

  • Confirmation That I Understand What I Can and Cannot Do With Adobe Reader XI and Adobe Acrobat Pro XI

I am new to working with Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and Adobe Reader XI.  Based on research I have done and questions answered in the Adobe Communities and Forum, I wanted to make sure I understand the limitations of these two products before I report back to my supervisor.  (We do not want to use XFA forms to obtain data in an xml file.)
    1.  Adobe Reader XI will allow a user to save a fillable PDF document to his/her local PC.  But it is only possible to save it as a PDF.
    2.  Adobe Reader XI will not allow a user to export the data in a fillable PDF into an xml file (unless you purchase the LiveCycle Reader Extensions license).
    3.  Adobe Reader XI will not allow a PDF file to be displayed in a .NET program unless the "Enable Protected Mode at startup" checkbox in Preferences/Security(Enhanced) has been unchecked.  (The previous version of Reader would allow this without disabling security.)
    4.  Adobe Acrobat Pro XI will allow a user to scan a form and create a fillable PDF.
    5.  Adobe Acrobat Pro XI will allow a user to save the fillable form as a PDF or XML.  However, it is the form that is being saved as an XML file.  Not the data.
    6.  Adobe Acrobat Pro XI will allow a user to export the data of a form into an xml file, an .fdf file, an .xfdf file, or a .txt file.
    7.  If a programmer writes a program in .NET to save the data of a PDF as an .xfdf file using IAC code, it will only work on a PC that has Adobe Acrobat (Standard or Pro).  If we need this executable to work on other PCs, we would need to purchase additional licenses of Adobe Acrobat - a license for every PC that needs to run the executable.
    8.  If a programmer writes  JavaScript code using trusted functions to get around security issues, that code will work on a PC that has Adobe Acrobat (Standard or Pro) but will not work on Adobe Reader XI.  Again, if we wanted our JavaScript to work, we would need to purchase Adobe Acrobat for every PC that would run the code.
Please let me know if I have understood all of this correctly.  Thank you.

Thank you for your comments to each of my statements, Irosenth.  That has been extremely helpful.
I probably needed more of an explanation on statement #3.  I wrote a .NET program that used this line:   "Process.Start("AcroRd32", FilePath)" and when I ran the executable on a desktop PC that only had Adobe Reader XI on it, Reader would not open unless we unchecked the "Enable Protected Mode at startup" box.  I researched this and found several references to this being a problem in Readers since Reader 9.  I just wanted to make sure this was correct.  One article indicated that we could change the security setting within the registry using code and then change it back.
Item #8 needed more information as well.  I had tried to use the "exportAsXFDF()" in a trusted function and it would never work in Reader.  It has an "F" in the availability column of the "Quick Bar" in the JavaScript API Reference which means it requires "forms rights".  I saw that; but it was not clear to me if that meant that a trusted function would work.  So, it looks like trusted functions will not get around security settings if forms rights are required.

  • How do I add a "PDF printer"  print to PDF so that I can create PDFs from any source I can print ?

How do I add a "PDF printer"  print to PDF so that I can create PDFs from any source I can print ?
I am using ADOBE Reader X Thanks

Pat;  using Windows you can create a "PDF printer" which is a virtual device that you can select when you want to create an Adobe PDF file from anything you normally would print to hardcopy.  As an example if I were on a webpage article that spanned two or three pages so a screen capture wouldn't really work, if I had a "Adobe PDF Printer" I would select that as my default printer and then print the webpage article.  Instead of the webpage article going to a real printer and producing hardcopy, the Adobe PDF printer would ask me for a file name and then "print" the file by creating an Adobe PDF file.  Does that help ?  Best regards,  Doug

  • Hyperlink text not complete when using Create PDF button in Word

    Hello -
I have Adobe Professional 9, and Microsoft office 2007. I'm trying to convert a word doc to a pdf using the Create PDF button but the resulting pdf always has incomplete hyperlinks. For instance, where it should say http://www.adobe.com, the output pdf will have : //www.adobe.com
When I hover over the link, the pop up label has the entire URL, and the links work, but I want the entire text to show. I've tried doing a repair with the install disc for adobe, but that didn't help. I've already checked the settings to ensure the Add Hyperlinks option is checked. I just did a complete uninstall/reinstall of all my Microsoft Office products and installed the service pack. I don't have this problem when I use the Create PDF button on my desktop computer, only when I use my laptop (Dell M4300). Any other suggestions?

I don't have my WORD 2007 on this machine. However, are you sure you are using the Adobe product and not the MS feature for creating the PDF? As for using PDF Maker, you should check the options/preferences in the Adobe menu. There should be a check box for conversion of links. Of course there is the question about whether the links are actually correct in WORD. The links only being partial is typical of the links not actually being transferred to the PDF, but simply Acrobat completing the link it thinks exists like WORD does.

  • I cannot open PDF documents correctly. I get an error on the page that says there is an error on the document. Neither Adobe Acrobat or Reader work.

I cannot open pdf files that are maps correctly . Some of the data layers are missing. I get a warning message that there is an error in the document and I should contact the originator. I have both Adobe Acrobat and the free version of Reader but neither will open them. When I forward them to other clients, they cannot open them either but can open them from the original sender.

Open Tools/Options/Advanced/general/Config. editor, copy mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks into the search box, double-click the preference to make its value false, OK, restart TB, and see if you still have problems with pdf attachments.
For messages that have already been received in IMAP accounts, you can force a re-download by selecting the Message Source (Ctrl-U), then try to open the attachment.

  • Trying to make a global change in InDesign-Created Catalog

A client wants the ability to increase prices in a catalog made in InDesign globally, e.g. 2% increase across the board on an annual basis.  Is there a way to do this that is not manual?  There are thousands of SKUs involved here so the manual process would be cost prohibitive.
    Thanks for any solution.

I didn't try it or look at the script but this should do it.

  • Random text appearing as bold when creating PDF from Photoshop CS5

Hi I am a relative newcomer to Photoshop CS5. I have been creating a document with a background image layer and a couple of text box layers. The font is set at Arial, italic, sharp. When I save the document as a PDF file, random words appear in bold. I have tried deleting these words in the PSD document text layer and retyping them but they still appear as bold in the PDF file. Interestingly when I save as a JPEG image the bold words appear as normal. Any ideas/ tips would be greatly appreciated. CS5 version is 12.0.4 and OS is Windows XP.

  • InDesign created PDF hyperlinks not working on a CD

    Forum
I have multiple large documents (created in InDesign) that we are publishing as pdfs on a CD - they are hyperlinked together in InDesign (interactive dialogue) - but I cant get the links to work after the files are moved to a CD together.
The paths that are created for the links are just the local path on my computer - no good on the CD. How can I fix this????
    Phil

The trick is to get everything into one folder- in other words, you have to determine the structure of the CD before you start linking things up with InDesign.
Create a folder that represents the root directory of the CD. In that folder you want your InD files AND the PDF files that you want to link to, all arranged as they will appear on the final CD. I frequently create "dummy" PDFs for this- they have the file name and they are in the right spot, but they contain nothing but a few words on one page. I can replace them later with the real McCoy, providing I don't change names or locations.
When it's all over, I remove the InD files and their associated Links folders, and what I'm left with is a single folder that represents the final CD.
I hope I explained this well enough-- it's much easier to show it than tell it.

  • I am trying to get my word doc's to fit PDF pages correctly

I have a website and I rely on my opt-in email lists when people sign-up for my reports that are sent out in PDF form. I write the reports in a 2007 word doc. and save them into a PDF but the pages don't save as a full page sometimes it only takes up half the width of the page and doesn't go to the top either as if it was simply centered in the PDF. How can I change this or what am I doing wrong? If you need to see the pdf just goto http://www.yourmobilevoice.com and you can download it yourself. It takes alot of time to write the reports but even longer to try to get them to fit properly.

I am sorry as you can see, you would need to sign up for the report in
order to get it. Otherwise Pat an opt-in email list would not work if they
can just download it, but thanks if you want me to send it direct to you I
sure can do that as well.
    Thanks Scott

  • Fonts jagged in InDesign and PDF export

I've been troubleshooting this issue for days, with no success. I'm using IDCS6 on a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, and it probably happens with all fonts, but I've noticed it specifically with "Din mittelschrift" at a large pt. size and 100% magnification. It wouldn't be a terrible thing, since it's not noticeable in most of the document, but I'm trying to create a catalog of sorts (as a series of 2-page spreads) and the brand's name on the cover has the most obnoxiously rough edges - I can't send the PDF off to anyone in this condition.
I'm an experienced computer user but an InDesign novice, so I've been trying various things I've found online that successfully solved others' problems, without having a very clear idea of what many things in ID do. Reading a few Adobe tutorials didn't enable me to fix things, either.
I've seen others post that jagged-looking fonts can clear up when exported to a PDF, but that didn't work. When I export to a PDF, interactive or not, it appears jagged at 100% - though strangely enough, at 300% it looks fine.
I checked my ID display settings. It's jagged even at High Quality - and display settings in InDesign wouldn't affect the PDF, anyway.
I made sure the font was installed in the proper place (Library/Fonts), cleared my font cache, and restarted the computer.
I tried converting the text to outlines in InDesign.
I tried setting the opacity to 99.9%.
I changed the color of the text to a grey (240/240/240) to reduce the contrast in case that was an issue.
The rest of the document appears fine in InDesign and as a PDF. No extreme jagged edges or low-quality appearance.
Right now the document is intended to only be viewed on a screen, but since I'm unsure if I'll ever be asked to prepare it for printing I created it using ID's print layout. I've been avoiding converting it to a web layout because that would mean hours of reformatting, and I figure that fonts should render with smooth edges no matter what the layout is set as.
I think I've done more than what's listed above, but forgotten the specifics.
I'll try anything short of destroying the catalog and starting over.
    Thank you!

Can you take a screenshot of what this looks like and post it?
Also, I've noticed that sometimes weird crap will show up when you view something in Acrobat. Like you can see a line between the font and the stroke, but when you zoom way in, it looks fine. It will print fine as well. Just a display issue. Can you print it? When you print it does it look like crap?

  • Indesign to PDF - Font showing up as small boxes

I am exporting an Indesign Document to PDF. The font in parts of the document are showing up as small boxes, and are not translating to you PDF version correctly when viewed in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
The document is too large to outline all they text, I am at 36 pages if heavy content (with bullet points that are not outlined correctly). I did not have is issue until I moved over to my new iMAC. I am wondering if there is just a simple setting I am missing.
Please let know if you have any solutions to correcting this font translation from InDesign to a PDF
The font i use is Helvetica Neue and has downloaded an my computer successfully
    I have tried:
Outlining text- too time consuming and does not handle the bullet points correctly
    Updating Adobe Acrobat
    Embedding Fonts 100%
    Compressing the Files
Changing the setting to "PDF/X-4:2008" when exporting
Saving as PDF/X from Acrobat Pro
I am currently stumped and need a solution as soon as possible.
Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi Aandi,
    Thanks for your quick response.
I have a program that is creating the information dictionary for the PDF file and assigns the information. I've checked the value of the Title, Subject, and Author fields just before being written out and they appear correctly in the program, but for some reason when they are assigned they only appear as question marks in the PDF Tab of the Properties window.
I wonder if this could be because I don't have Helvetica font, and the substituted font doesn't support double-byte characters?
I just tried to directly assign the values and they do appear correctly.
