Trying to set up JAVA on Linux

Hi Everyone,
I just freshly built a FC5 box to do java development on. It installed the following packages during installation:
java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-1.4.2.0-40jpp_83rh
java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-devel-1.4.2.0-40jpp_83rh
java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-src-1.4.2.0-40jpp_83rh
java_cup-0.10-0.k.1jpp_9fc
java_cup-javadoc-0.10-0.k.1jpp_9fc
java_cup-manual-0.10-0.k.1jpp_9fc
This one, java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-devel has the java utilities, javac, java etc etc. However, now i've downloaded jdk-1_5_0_07-linux-i586 from sun.com and it's installed.
Now when I type javac -v it says this:
Eclipse Java Compiler v_585_R31x, 3.1.2 release, Copyright IBM Corp 2000, 2006. All rights reserved.
I think it's running /usr/bin/javac which is part of the java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-devel.
I don't know what version it's using. I tried to remove v 1.4.2, but it says ant relies on it, which is part of apache.
Also, I know my classpath should be ".", do I need to set up any other environment variable.
Can someone who's been through this before please give me some guidance? Thanks :)

I've got that sorted, it's using the correct version now.
However, i'm getting another issue now:
[root@berenlinux beren]# java Test.class
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Test/class
[root@berenlinux beren]#
i've tried CLASSPATH= <- nothing and CLASSPATH=.

  • Set Date Time Computer with Java in Linux OS

    Dear All,
How to set date time computer with Java in linux OS?
    Rgds,

There is no API for this you'd have to run an external command using Process.exec.
This is the wrong forum for general Java "how to" questions.

  • Generate a thumbnail from HTML by pure Java on Linux without Graphics

hi - we in a requirement where we have to generate thumbnails from HTML code. The solution must be implemented in pure Java on Linux where there is no graphics support.
    Options tried already are :--
    1. 3rd party websites - rolled out by our client.
    2. Paid products - rolled out by our client
    3. Media Tracker and other java API - no luck as there is no support after HTML 4.0
    4. Using any os dependent native library - rolled out by our client.
    5. Lobo browser - but having troubles like it opens the browser before screenshot is taken, sometimes. Gone through by putting Thread.sleep() in between and saving remote images into a local html file etc. We got some success in there but problem doesn't end here.
    Questions -
    1. In the point # 5 above, our Linux server had graphics support but in code we set the system property java.awt.headless= true before capturing and generating thumbnail. My question is, if we set this property in the code then does it mean 100% that our code will not use any graphics support, if present in the underlying OS?
    2. Is this really possible to generate images in java on Linux where there is no X window/X server installed? Are we just wasting time in order to achieve which is unachievable?
    Any suggestions are most welcome.
    Regards,
    Sanjeev

Thanks for ur response! Yeah - we tried but requirements are little different. We have HTML that we have to first render. Whatever output comes, we have to take a screenshot. So in order to render the html we have to have a browser first and I believe every OS which is providing browser support is having Graphics capabilities because browser would have frames, windows, toolbars, menubars etc which fall under Graphics.
The above way is the only way that I know. If there are another way which ofcourse doesn't require graphics support, please let me know.
So the question basically is - if I follow above mentioned image (like opening browser and capture screenshot) then is it possible on Linux with no graphics support? Actually I read on internet that lobo browser (written in java) supports this kind of feature.

  • Setting classpath permanantly on linux

I have been using "export JDK_HOME=YadaYada", but this doesn't live on between sessions and re-boots. How does one permamantly configure this environment variable for all users including root on a linux bo so that it lives on between sessions and re-boots?

  • Novice Trying to Set The CLASSPATH Variable

I am trying to compile a file (which can be downloaded at http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/QandE/FirstClass.java). Despite being able to successfully compile several other files, this particular one will not compile. According to my JAVA Tutorial book, the problem may lie in the CLASSPATH variable, but I am having a great deal of trouble trying to set/understand it. My operating system is WINDOWS 2000. PLEASE HELP!!!

in win 2000, the classpath can be set by the following process.
Right Click My Computer icon and click on properties.
(This can be done by going to the Control Panel and Double Clicking the System icon too).
Once you have the properties window of the system click on the 'Advanced' tab.
There is a button called 'Environment variables'.Click on it.
You will have a part called 'System Variables' there.
Here there is an entry called Classpath. Just add the entry of what you want to add to the classpath, separating each entry with a ';' semicolon as mentioned there and click on the Set button.
That should set the classpath. If that does not take effect immediately, restart the system and it will take effect.
    Tell me if it worx.
    All the best. Bye!
    Cheers,
    Win!

  • Informix: Error while trying to set up start or end key for index read

    Hi all
Im moving an application from weblogic 6.1 to 8.1, we're using informix as our databasemanager and are using informix's XA driver. However im running into the following error:
SQL State: IX000, Exception: java.sql.SQLException: [Internal] Error while trying to set up start or end key for index read [fmstopset_release],
SQL ErrorCode: -9847, Error Message: [Internal] Error while trying to set up start or end key for index read [fmstopset_release], RSAM ErrorCode: -101
    ...while accessing a table.
The same code runs fine twice, but the third and following times it fails with the above error code. I've tried setting the various XA flags available in the weblogic console but with no success so far.
Anyone have any input to this problem? Ive not seen many postings about this error out in the cyberspace and the fews ive seen never gets any response...so i just have to hope anyone in here know anything about it.
    Best regards
    JM

    Hello
I managed to work around my problem by setting the "statement cache size" in the jdbc connection pool to 0. At least that seems to be a work around, im not fully happy with it.
I attach the stack trace from the exception, perhaps it will give someone an idea.
Btw, we're using sun.jdbc.rowset.ExtendedCachedRowSet to populate the resultset to a "disconnected resultset" which the application works with instead of the resultset. Any statements and resultsets that are created are closed before returning the ExtendedCachedRowSet to the application.
If the application works when statement caching is turned off, then it implies a bug in the
informix driver to do with re-using a prepared statement. Is the PreparedStatement used
the same way each time? (the one at AbstractDAO.java:166) What I mean to ask is, If/when
this statement is created with a given SQL string, are the parameters for that SQL always
    set the same way?
    thanks,
    Joe

I'm getting the same problem. What happens on my server is that sometimes when a thread tries to print a stack trace, it gets stuck at "FileOutputStream.writeBytes". All other threads will then stop at "printStackTrace" when they try to synchronize on the System.err, like yours. I have no idea why this is happening. However, I don't use weblogic or ejb, so it seems to be a more basic issue. As a workaround, I'm considering to set a custom System.err that writes all its output to a queue which then in turn gets written to the real System.err by a separate thread. That way, the worst that can happen is that that separate thread gets stuck.
This is quite annoying but I'm not sure if we have enough information yet to file a bug. I can't reproduce it yet. My server sometimes runs for weeks without this problem happening...
If anyone has updates on this, that would be much appreciated.
    My system:
Java: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.6.0_02-b05, mixed mode)
    OS: Debian 4.0
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Dual Core

  • Ugly fonts in java under linux

I'm using JRE 1.5.0_03-fcs under Fedora Core 3. Some of the applications I run have really bad fonts, which look pixellated, and are difficult to read. When I asked on the Fedora mailing list, someone said that jre uses its own font rendering engine, instead of the one used by X window, and so none of my installed fonts will be recognised and used by jre.
So, my question is: how do I improve this situation? What can I do to make jre recognise the Microsoft and other fonts I have installed, and how do I make a certain application use a font of my choice, instead of the ugly default?
    Anand

    Hi,
Ok, I tried the setting you suggested, ie. -Dswing.aatext=true, but it made no difference. What does that option do?
I have created a screenshot of the application, if anyone is interested in seeing it. Perhaps it will explain better what the problem is.

one thing that needs fixing is the fact that each time the createRecord() method is called I'm creating a new fieldMap to define the dataFields in the record class.Probably, but that will only get you a little bigger files; you won't gain an order of magnitude on the size of files. The problem for huge files is that as soon as their content is bigger than the available memory, you'll run into problems. A more radical approach if you need to address huge files is to process the records on the fly, and not load all records in memory. Of course not all algorithms or business logic can afford that...
I know I could rewrite the code and create a class for each record type and declare the fieldMap static but I was wondering if anyone had any better suggestions The Record instance could receive and keep a reference to its RecordType instance, and ask the RecordType instance the DataType for a field's name. That way the RecordType encapsulates the map, and there's less risk that a clumsy other class modifies the static map.
before I go rewriting a load of code.A load of code?!? Even with the idea of the static map, you only have to edit the enum type (well more accurately, each RecordType enumerated constant's createRecord() method).

  • Rdisp/mssserv is not set in Java add in installation

I am in the process of trying to install the Java add-in to the already upgraded WAS ABAP server.  After specifying the location of the profile directory, I continue to get an error message that reads, "Profile parameter rdisp/msserv_internal in not set for instance DVEBMGS00/DV1 on host xxx.  I have ready note 821875 and the [parameter exist exactly like the note suggests and I have restarted the system numerous times and this error continues to exist.  Has anyone else dealt with this issue before?  I could use some assistance right about now.  Thanks in advance.

    Hello Leon
What is the exact error message that you are recieving?
    Thanks

  • No Signature of Method Error when trying to set Bind Variable Groovy Expr

I am trying to set a Bind variable on my view object to equal the output of a function defined in the the EntityImpl.java that corresponds to that bind variable.
I set the value of my bind variable to be = adf.object.getMyServiceType()
Where the name of the view object I am currently in is called GridSwSoftwareServiceView.xml and the Entity object is called GridSwSoftwareService.java and the EntityImpl file is called GridSwSoftwareService.java.
    I am seeing this error:
No signature of method: oracle.jbo.common.VariableImpl$VariableExprValueSupplier.getMyServiceType() is applicable for argument types: () values: []
Does anyone know what this error means?
I was trying to follow an example from this doc: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/11/how-tos/groovy/introduction_to_groovy.pdf

    Looks like a bug... :(
It works fine as a View Object attribute expression but it fails miserably once added as an expression to the bind variable. In this case, here is a work-around:
Define the method as static in your EntityImpl.java :
    public static String getMyServiceType() {
    return "EBSO R12";
Then access it by fully qualifying it with the package and class :
    com.yourpackage.EntityImpl.getMyServiceType()
    Edited:
On a second thought, I am wondering if the expression is valid since the Entity hasn't yet constructed at that point.... That explains why it works when made static.
