Trying to write an applet that reads/displays a file from a remote server

Hey all,
I'm trying to make a little applet that launches from a browser that allows me to read a file from a server, reads it line by line and displays each line, and continues to read/monitor the file until I get a specific line of text.
I've tried to do some code and although I can read the file (and display it), I can't seem to detect the end string (the if statement that tests if the line == "--END--" seems to have no effect, i.e. constant false).
I have a feeling the approach I took is wrong since this seems insecure and just looks bad (I've seen stuff that seems to indicate I need to do something with implements Runnable or something.) Even if anyone doesn't have the time to actually do the framework of this, if they could perhaps outline an approach and any necessary topics I need to look at (such as
1. Go and read the threads tutorial.
2. Go and read the X section in the Y tutorial.
3. Check out this <link>, as they seem to be doing something similar to what you're doing.
Thanks in advance.

import java.io.*;

import java.net.*;
public class FaxTest extends JApplet {
     JTextArea area;
     JScrollPane pane;
     String display;
     String old_display;
     String tmp;
     boolean end = false;
     java.util.Timer FileTimer = new java.util.Timer();
     TimerTask FileReadTask = new readFile();
     public void init() {
          area = new JTextArea();
          area.setWrapStyleWord(true);
          area.setLineWrap(true);
          area.setEditable(false);
          pane = new JScrollPane(area);
          Container c = getContentPane();
          c.add(pane);
          FileTimer.schedule(FileReadTask, 500,5000);
     public void stop()
          FileTimer.stop();
     class readFile extends TimerTask {
          public void run() {
          java.util.Timer timer = new java.util.Timer();
          TimerTask task = new FaxUpdate();
          timer.schedule(task, 1000,1000);
          try {
          display = "";
          String filename = getParameter("FILENAME");
          URL url = new URL(filename);
          InputStreamReader in = new InputStreamReader(url.openStream());
          BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(in);
          while( (tmp = br.readLine()) != null) {
               if (tmp == "--END--\n") end = true;
               display += tmp;
          catch(IOException error) {
          display = "Error" + error;
     class FaxUpdate extends TimerTask {
          public void run() {
          if(end == true) {
               area.setText("finito");
          else area.setText(display);
}

use tmp.equals("--END--\n") instead of tmp == "--END--\n"
The == means does tmp reference the same object as "--END--\n" which will probably never be true. Using the equals method means does tmp contains the same characters as "--END--\n"

    Oh, you should have your keyboard fixed: the full stop key seems to be stuck, you have a lot of trailing ..... after each sentence.

  • To read flat file from a unix server

    We need to read a flat file from a Unix server, where our Database is located.
    The location gets created correctly.
    But while we are trying to import files from the location in Design Center , we get an error that "directory does not exists", although the directory has all the permissions.
    Can someone please suggest how should we create the location so as it can read the files.
    Please Reply ASAP......

    We have started Design Center on a local machine(Windows Machine) with uaer as repository owner of the server,
    In the design center we can not sample the file till we import it,
    can you please tell how to sampe the file without importing it.
    Also a location pointing to server location gets easily created on the design center and the file module points to that location only, but when we try to import the file through that location, it says directory does not exists, although oracle user has all the read write permissions on the directory......

    Hi Sutirtha,
    Initially I have started the agent.sh giving the agent name <agent name>and port number 20910 and defined it in the topology manager it is showing that the agent test is succesful. Then I tested a particular Data server against that agent and the test was successful.
    After this we had stopped the agent and restarted it.
    However now suddenly the testing against the remote agent is failing with the following excep:

  • Reading file from the presentation server in the background

    Hi,
    I am trying to read a .csv file from the presentation server into an internal table in the background. what should I do for it? In the foreground it works fine.
    I have declared a selection parameter 'p_file' that has the path of the file. It wokrs fine in the foreground and how to set it up in the background?
    Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks in advance,
    VG

    hii
    did you achieved the required functionality , i,e, accessing presentation server file i nbackground .
    I too got the same requirement, can you explain the process.
    There is no way you can do it... The best method is to put the file on Appln server and then call it in the background mode.

    Vishwa.

  • Read a zip file from Application server.

    Hi,
    Is there a way to read a zip file from the applicatoin server to internal table in ABAP program?  The operation system is running MS windows server.  The zip file contains only 1 text file.  I tried to use open dataset 'uncompress', and use read dataset, but read dataset gave me sy-subrc = 4.  Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    hi,
    to convert xstring to text you can use this:
    DATA unzipped_data TYPE xstring.
    DATA text_data TYPE string.
    DATA conv_x2c TYPE REF TO cl_abap_conv_in_ce.
    conv_x2c = cl_abap_conv_in_ce=>create( ).
    conv_x2c->convert( EXPORTING input = unzipped_data IMPORTING data = text_data ).
    moreover, if you want to split your text at "end of line" (CR LF in microsoft windows) into lines:
    DATA text_lines TYPE TABLE OF string.
    SPLIT text_data AT cl_abap_char_utilities=>cr_lf INTO TABLE text_lines.

  • "Bad data format" when reading txt file from the presentation server

    Hello,
    I have a piece of code which reads a txt file from the presentation server to an internal table like below:
    DATA : lv_filename type string.
    lv_filename = 'C:\abap\Test.txt'. "I created a folder called abap under C:\
    CALL method CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>GUI_UPLOAD
    EXPORTING
       FILENAME              = lv_filename
    CHANGING
       DATA_TAB            = lt_tsd. " lt_tab has the exact same fields as the Test.txt's. Test.txt has only one line, tab delimited.
    When running this code, exception BAD_DATA_FORMAT is issued.
    Is it because of the file encoding or delimiter or other reason?
    Thanks,
    Yang

    Hello,
    If its tab delimited then use the has_field_seperator parameter and check
    DATA : lv_filename type string.
    lv_filename = 'C:\abap\Test.txt'. "I created a folder called abap under C:\
    CALL method CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>GUI_UPLOAD
    EXPORTING
       FILENAME                = lv_filename
       FILETYPE                 = 'ASC'
       HAS_FIELD_SEPARATOR          = u2018Xu2019
    CHANGING
       DATA_TAB            = lt_tsd.

  • Can I change the file path that itunes reads my music files from? 65000 files trying to be transferrd from external to internal HD. I dont want itunes to manage my collection, just read it. thanks

    Can I change the file path that itunes reads my music files from?
    I have about 65000 music files that i have transferrd from my external to a new laptop internal HD.
    I have organised the folders myself as I use a PC and do not want itunes to organise the folders because when I'm searching through music on windows it is sorted out by artists/albums with 'the...(eg  The Beatles)' under 'T' instead of 'B'.
    Long story short.... Is there any way that I can keep my itunes library as it is on the external HD and copy it to the new laptops C drive, keep all the info (playlists etc) and still have the same folder structure as on the external HD?
    Or, is there any way of making windows sort things in alphabetical order like it is in itunes (eliminating the 'the' issue)?

    The files that weren't inside the media folder on the original machine need to be copied over to exactly the same paths as they had on the source machine. See this thread for an ongoing discussion of a similar problem. See also this post on migrating the iTunes library.

  • Applet that will browse for files!

    I have used applications in the past where you want to open a file in that application, such as a word document in a word processor. Is there that sort of facility available to Java. Say that I write an applet that excepts text in a box and the text could be found on a text file on the user's hard drive. Is there code that would open a dialog box where the user could navigate to the appropriate text file? Any code, web resource or suggestions very gratefuly received. Thanks, Dave.

    Addendum ;)
    You can actually sign applets with you own certficate. This will let your applet get the autorization to access the file sistem. People using that applet will just have to trust that selfmade certificate, since it won't be officially trusted. It's kind of a workaround so to speak, but it lets you provide an applet with no restrictions. And for free, no fee.
    There's a thread on this forum explaing step by step how to proceed to sign an applet using a self-signed certificate.
    Applet vs Application: Deployment and version control are very easy and require little effort while redeploying a java appliation to a lot of people is a serious issue, unless you provide the required "update" functionality by yourself (code it ;(
    Another option would be using Java Webstart, but there again you would probably have to sign the application to get the necessary functionality (Security Managager again.)

  • Open Data Set Error while trying to read file from non SAP server

    Hi all,
    is it possible to read data from non-SAP application Sever?
    I'm using OPEN DATASET p_filin FOR INPUT IN LEGACY TEXT MODE CODE PAGE '1504',
    Where p_filin is other Windows server.Our applicition server is under Unix.Is it a problem?
    I make test to read file from SAP application server and it was ok.So how to call other server?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Yes it is possible to read data from a non SAP server through the statement OPEN DATASET.
    The important thing to check is that the SAP Server got enough access to the non SAP server so it can perform a reading/writing process depending on your needs.
    You should contact your network administrator and BASIS to help you check the permissions. This can be pretty tricky, specially if the servers are in different domains.

  • Display excel file from jsp

    hi i am trying to read an excel file from a location on the app server and display it in the browser (ie). the excel file should open up and not display the open/save dialog.
    following is the code that i am using. i am not able to get it to work. getting an illegalstateexception and also i am getting all garbage diplayed in the browser. no excel. kindly help.
    <%@ page import="java.io.*" contentType="application/vnd.ms-excel"%>
    <%@ taglib uri="/WEB-INF/tlds/sapphire.tld" prefix="sapphire" %>
    <%@ taglib uri="/WEB-INF/tlds/c.tld" prefix="c" %>
    <%
    //response.reset();
    //response.setHeader("Pragma", "no-cache");
    //response.setHeader("Cache-Control", "no-cache");
    //response.setDateHeader("Expires", 0L);
    ServletOutputStream so = response.getOutputStream();
    String filename = "C:\\example1.xls";
    String mimetype = "application/vnd.ms-excel";
    ByteArrayOutputStream output = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    InputStream in = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(filename));
    byte bytebuff[] = new byte[500];
    for(int lengthread = 0; (lengthread = in.read(bytebuff)) != -1;){
    output.write(bytebuff, 0, lengthread);
    byte data[] = output.toByteArray();
    response.setContentType(mimetype);
    so.write(data);
    in.close();
    so.close();
    %>

    A JSP calls getWriter() by default.
    Every time you have a carriage return outside <% %> it gets written to the writer.
    The Illegal state exception would be because you are getting the outputStream after the writer.
    This is better done in a servlet, but can be done in a JSP, try it with code like this:
    <%@ page import="java.io.*" contentType="application/vnd.ms-excel"
    %><%@ taglib uri="/WEB-INF/tlds/sapphire.tld" prefix="sapphire"
    %><%@ taglib uri="/WEB-INF/tlds/c.tld" prefix="c"
    %><%
    %> Note that there is no text at all outside of the <% %> (not even carriage returns)
    Also, why are you writing to a ByteArrayOutputStream (ie into a memory byte array), and then writing the byte array to the servletoutputstream?
    Just put a buffer around the servlet outputstream and write directly to that.
    ServletOutputStream so = response.getOutputStream();
    BufferedOutputStream output = new ByteArrayOutputStream(so);

  • Application to read 2 log files from internet

    Hi,
    Anybody could tell me how to develop this project. I'm lack of time. thanks
    You have been asked into a company called Broken Arrow Software as a Senior Software Engineer and Management consultant. You are being paid very handsomely and have been asked to write an application program in Java for parsing a log file.
     The program will have a standard menu using the AWT only.
     ALL LAYOUTS MUST USE ONLY THE BORDER-LAYOUT OR GRID-LAYOUT OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH (Any other layouts score zero).
    This application reads two Log files from the internet. The first file contains USA state names and the abbreviation used for that state. This information will be used in displaying totals from another network file and should be stored in an array (or two arrays, or a two dimensional array) in the program. The second file should extract the Reversed subdomain section from a Log file (a section is shown later) and store this in an array in the application. This should be processed and only those domains beginning with us. should be processed. Each us. Has an abbreviated USA state after it (tx is an abbreviation for Texas). The abbreviations are sorted and all states are on consecutive lines and each displays a number of accesses for that state. The accesses should be totalled and displayed in the current Frame for each state in the form of Java List components (these do not need to be synchronised so that they all scroll in unison).
    The application will be a Java application with the following menus and MenuItems:
     Splash screen (10%)
     Application (20%)
    o Open USA abbreviation file
    o Clear screen
    o Exit
     File (25%)
    o Open network log file
    o Open locally saved report file
    o Recent report files
    o Save as report file
     Graph (20%)
    o Plot
     Help (15%)
    o Help on Application
    o About
    A basic pass for the application will be for a basic implementation of an application with help options and some basic implementations of a Splash screen and some basic file and application options. Very high marks will be awarded for processing network files, saving and opening files, very good HCI, application design and error handling, excellent OO design for classes, gorgeous layout and commenting of code and excellent graphing capabilities.
    Error handling dialogs and overall application design (10%)
    Every class must be in a separate file.
    Inheritance should be used for WindowListeners of Frames and Dialogs.
    Up to 10% can also be lost by unprofessional code layout and lack of professional standards. Always adhere to standards taught throughout the module and your time at the University of Northumbria.
    Examples of non-professionalism would include bad indentation, no comments, meaningless variable names, politically incorrect graphics, commented out code, empty .java files, .java files which are not part of the project etc. Remember your application is your livelihood and your company depends on your application standards.
    The splash screen must be a Frame with a Canvas as part of it showing your own logo. Your logo should be individual to you but does not need to win the computing equivalent of the Turner prize. The application should be displayed behind the Splash screen and both should be visible. The application must not be able to be brought to the front and used without the Splash screen being disposed of.
    The application should only enable the Open USA abbreviation file, Open locally saved report file, Help options and Exit Menus and MenuItems, when the application starts. On opening a valid USA abbreviation file, then the other Menus and MenuItems should be enabled.
    The abbreviations should be read into an array. These should be used in displaying the totals for the reversed subdomain totals for each USA state. A total for all USA states should be displayed at the bottom of the current Frame, with a suitable Label (this design is your own). This current Frame should display a series of Lists starting with a List of USA state number (1 to n). A List of USA state abbreviation should be next followed by a List of the actual USA state name, followed by a List of the total accesses for that state.
    The report file should be an ASCII file that can be printed out from an ASCII text editor such as DOS edit or Microsoft NotePad.
    The Open network files should display a Dialog asking for the http:// address of the file, with OK and Cancel options. It is helpful if the user can hit return instead of clicking on OK and Escape instead of cancel. Error Dialogs should be used to indicate any errors that may occur and the state of the application should be reset to that of before displaying the Dialog.
    When Save as report file is chosen a FileDialog box should be used for the user to choose both directory and filename. The file should be able to be saved as a .rpt file.
    Open report file should display the report in a Frame; the design of which is your own.
    Plotting the graph should pass a two dimensional array to a Frame with a Canvas. The Canvas should have a Paint method that draws the axis for the graph and any suitable Headings etc. The graph should draw a histogram of totals per USA states. The graph design is your own but you may wish to use Microsoft Excel as a good example of drawing a histogram.
    The Clear screen option should clear any data off the current screen.
    The Exit option should quit the application but it may be helpful to ask the user if they really want to exit the application.
    Help must be Java code and not linking into HTML. It should display help in a well designed screen. The most basic implementation might use a scrollable TextArea for a basic mark.
    See other software for a good About screen. The most basic should display your name, date, version and company.
     Help should display your help on using the application. As a senior software engineer, the design is your own, based on experience of using applications, as is the opening splash screen. You may use other applications for inspiration only, as these will make up your experience.
     Your good knowledge gained from HCI units studied should prove invaluable in the interface design and the usability of the application.
     The design (Screens and classes) and quality and documentation of code throughout the application will be marked. The experience gained from programming 1 and 2 and Object Oriented Programming should prove invaluable throughout the application, as should any GUI units studied.
    The log file can be accessed at:
    http://computing.unn.ac.uk/staff/cgpb2/public_html/log.html

    You would really gain ever so much more from this exercise if you would write a couple of classes, then come back with some specific questions. If you're completely lost, try starting with the GUI first. It's not the best practice, always, but it is easy to visualize.
    On a side note, I wish I'd had assignments even half this intersting when I was in my Java classes...

  • How to read an audio file from the disk and play it?

    Do you know who to read an audio file from the hard disk and play it. It's for an application and not an applet. I tried with the Applet.newAudioClip(URL url) thing, but I keep getting a MalformedURLException.
    And is there a way to get the path of the file you are using? Currently I'm doing this:
    File file = new file("randomname");
    string = file.getAbsolutePath();

  • Reading an xml file from a jar file

    Short question:
    Is it possible to read an xml file from a jar file when the dtd is
    placed inside the jar file? I am using jdom (SAXBuilder) and the default
    sax parser which comes with it.
    Long Question:
    I am trying to create an enterprise archive file on Weblogic 6.1. We
    have a framework that is similar to the struts framework which uses it's
    own configuration files
    I could place the dtd files outside the jar ear file and specify the
    absolute path in an environment variable in web.xml which is
    configurable through the admin console.
    But I want to avoid this step and specify a relative path within the jar
    file.
    I have tried to use a class which implements the entityresolver as well
    as try to extend the saxparser and set the entity resolver within this
    class explicitly, but I always seem to sun into problems like:
    The setEntityresolver method does not get called or there is a
    classloader problem. i.e. JDOM complains that it cannot load My custom
    parser which is part of the application

    Please contact the main BEA Support team [email protected]
    They will need to check with product support to determine
    the interoperatablity of Weblogic Server with these other
    products.
