Trying to zip up a bunch of files into one file for an easy transfer

So I'm helping this lady transfer her old files from her 9.2 OS onto OS X, how do I zip files? With windows I would use Win Zip. Is there Mac zip?

Hello Trank31337 & Welcome to Discussions,
If your not familiar with zip files on a Macintosh here is a quick run down. Stuffit Expander, which is part of the OS 9 and OS X systems is used to open zip files and many other formats only. If you want to actually zip a file, you will need to purchase Stuffit Deluxe from Aladdin Systems.

Or
You could look into the free program MacZip. It says it works with 7.x and I'm not sure if it will work with OS 9 or OS X. Give it a look at:

  • Simple script to zip up a bunch of files

    Using Win-7 Pro, x86-64 ...
This has got to be simpler than the solutions I've seen so far.
I have a directory with several dozen files.  I'd like to create a zip file backup of that directory on a regular basis.  I'd like to script that so that I can have the scheduler run it without my having to manually do anything (in fact, I'd plan
on scheduling it to run on the weekend, when I'm not even in the office).   On my Linux boxes, it's a simple one-liner:
    zip /my_backup_directory/myzipfile /my_source_directory/*
Everything I've found so far for doing this in Windows either requires some additional software (not part of the basic Windows installation), or several dozen lines of vbscript.  Surely I'm overlooking something simple.

You can do it with powershell and the zip package dot net class:
It's a code from David in California - see

  • Trying to limit a user on OSX Server to one directory for FTP

    Hey there everybody,
I'm trying to set up a client FTP for a new mac mini running OSX Server (Mavericks). FTP is enabled and I am able to get and put files but, the server is going to be used for a client services company and we will need to use it to transfer files back and forth without allowing access to the whole machine. The core issue is when I FTP in as a user I can still move around and see folders and files. I would like to create a user that can only see one folder or directory and only get / put files to that one place. Can't seem to find any similar posts, though I would assume this is fairly common.
    Huge thanks in advance!

  • HT2518 After using Migrate Assistant, I made several accounts for every attempt to migrate files from PC to Mac. How can I put all accounts together into one? How can I transfer the files from the other accounts to my primary account?

Okay, so I did the entire Migrate Assistant process to transfer all my files and what not to my MacBook. Problem is that I did it on seperate occasions and now I have several accounts.
How can I transfer my files from the other accounts to my primary account and delete the other accounts?

Problem is that I did it on seperate occasions and now I have several accounts.
If you had read carefully, Migration Assistant asks what you want to do in this event. That would have precluded the redundancy.
Part of the fundamental design of OS X is to separate user accounts so that one user can't interfere with another. It's not possible to directly merge an account with another, but you can copy whatever you need to the Shared folder - it is in your Users folder.
Log in to one account, prefereably a smaller one, and drag the files and folders into Shared. Log out, log into the account you want to be "primary" and drag the files from Shared into their appropriate locations. When you have copied everything you need delete the redundant account.
Do this for each of them.
Or, you can just run Migration Assistant again and follow the prompts that address the situation you described. It involves creating a secondary, temporary account from which you can administer the transfer. When it is complete you delete the temporary account(s).

  • Is there a way to save comments into a "macro" or easily accessible file for quick/easy insertion?

To preface, I'm a lawyer and I use acrobat predominantly for its drawing and commenting features to "mark-up" contracts.  I get scanned text documents, I resize them using "Edit Object" or print-to-PDF at a reduced size and then I draw on them and use the text callout bubbles.
As many of these contracts feature similar provisions, I often find myself making the same comments over and over, and I was wondering if anyone had a good method, or macro for inserting comments easily.
I was thinking of creating a blank PDF document and then copy-pasting each callout text box into the document under the respective heading, and creating Tags, but this seems awfully labor intensive.
    Two other things:
    1) Why doesn't Acrobat X Pro grant me an automated function/action to resize (using Edit Object) every page?
    2) Acrobat needs better commenting tools for comments intended for printing.  Most people in my industry don't have/know how to use Acrobat, so pop-up comments become either obtrusive (covering text) or confusing.

You could create a menu item or tool bar button to allow you to selected a comment from a pop-up menu.

    > 1) Why doesn't Acrobat X Pro grant me an automated function/action to resize (using Edit Object) every page?
Acrobat is not an authoring tool and the original purpose of Acrobat was to allow the simple sharing of text and images between different computer users who might not have the same programs or operating systems. Remember this is a 17+ year old program and works across Mac, Windows, Unix, Android, Palm OS, and Solaris computer system. Probably the most widely distributed program in the world.
    > 2) Acrobat needs better commenting tools for comments intended for printing.  Most people in my industry don't have/know how to use Acrobat, so pop-up comments become either obtrusive (covering text) or confusing.
Acrobat was not designed for Attorneys. Better yet why do not attorneys learn how to use the tools they need to use to do their job or get proper technical support. This reminds me of the federal judge who felt PDF and Acrobat/Reader were too much trouble and she demanded all documents sent to her needed to be in the MS Word format. And when the attorneys complied with her order, she could not open the documents since she only had WordPerfect on her system with no conversion tools for MS Word documents.
You can use the text comment box tool or the call out tool to make comments that are not in a pop-up balloon.

  • HT1176 I am trying to add my iPhoto library to files to be backed up on time machine. I am told to click on the Options Minus butto, but it is greyed out. What is the solution ?

I have been trying to add my iPhoto Library to files for time machine backup.
I was instructed to click on the Options minus button - but it is greyed out and not functional.
    What is the solution ?
Your help will be much appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Roberto Kay

You can "see" the iPhoto library in Time Machine backups, but you cannot "open" the library or "browse" the contents while you are in Time Machine.
Apple makes you restore the entire iPhoto library to another destination...like your desktop....if you want to retrieve a few older images that you may have deleted by mistake.
This is a convoluted mess, but unfortunately, that is the way it is.
See Pondini's excellent, detailed information on this:
    http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
You might also want to post in the iPhoto support area to see if the experts over there might have a workaround for you. I cannot find one, but I'm not an iPhoto expert.

  • Rendering Lo-Res files for inspection by stock agency questions.

*Using FCE 4.* My stock photo agency is requesting videos now. I'm using a Canon 5D Mark II.
What I want to do is to render low-resolution clips for the agency inspection. They will choose from the LR clips and I will then supply HR files for submission.
I have been trying to render the lowest possible resolution files for submission and the files are ending up mostly rendered without audio. I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing but I can't seem to drink enough coffee to absorb what I'm missing from the digital manual or Tom Wolsky's book.
That would be two questions: what settings will give me the lowest possible file size for agency inspection and how do I make sure the audio is included in the rendered LR files?
I appreciate any help on this and I hope to bring my skill level up quickly over the next couple of months. Now I know how Photoshop beginners feel. I grew up with PS but video is a whole new world for me.
    Fred

    Bonjour (Hi)!
(I assume that the audio is enabled in your sequence)
So your sequence is an HD one.
_FOR DATA DV or HARD DRIVE ARCHIVE_, same process (altough you can keep the original 1920X1080 for hard drive way):
The simplest way is to export the sequence with the correct aspect ratio (16:9) to a smaller frame size.
    1920X1080 gives a such ratio as 640X360.
To reduce your frame size to 640X320, no other choice than using "export->using quicktime conversion" in file menu.
In the Save window dialog, choose "Quicktime movie" in the local format menu. Click on Options to get access to desired settings like frame size, codec, etc.
    In *Movie settings window* :
For video: click settings to open the *Standard video compression setting window* and choose the codec (here MPEG 4) in Compression local menu (there is a selector for compressor quality, maximum data rate.
Click OK to confirm the codec choice for video in *Standard video compression setting window*.
In *Movie settings window* select Size to get access to *Export size settings* window. There are some presets included but you can enter custom values here. Set frame dimension as you need, but keep in mind to choose numbers that have a 16:9 ratio like 640X320 or other one.
Desinterlace is a good option if your work with interlaced source material.
Click OK to confirm the frame size for video in *Export size settings* window.
For audio: click settings to get access to *Sound settings* window and choose the audio codec etc, Linear PCM at 48 kHz stereo give your the best audio from FCE. As you distribute on DATA DVD or hard drive, audio size is not an issue here.
Confirm the codec choice with OK key in *Sound settings* window.
Confirm the video and audio setting by clicking OK in the *Movie settings* window.
In the Save window, name the exported movie, select a destination to save and click Save.
The resulting file will a compressed one with all option selected. This movie is suitable for DATA DVD burning or Hard drive usage.
TIP: There is some compression presets included in the Save window at format local menu. iPhone or Apple TV are efficient ones.
Look at those links about video compression:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/qt_h-264_moviesfcp.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/qt_movies_fromfcp.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/video_to_ipodstone.html
To produce a _STANDARD DEFINITION WIDESCREEN DVD_:
Simply use the export-->quicktime movie in file menu. Select audio and video content in the Save window local menu. Check "self contained" and a destination for the movie.
To authoring the DVD, you can use iDVD:
there is an issue with wide screen content, see:
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Video9.html
The other way to resolve this problem is to use Quicktime player PRO, open your wide screen exported movie and set the correct *Aperture playback* option for video track in Movie properties window (use Command-J to get this window in quicktime player PRO). Save the new version of the movie once this option selected.
Drag your exported movie in a *wide screen iDVD project* and burn your project. iDVD will handle the frame size reduction and the compression for DVD usage. You don't have to choose option here.
    Or
Use Roxio Toast, or Compressor if you own it (included with Final Cut Studio 2).
The resulting DVD will be a *Standard definition wide screen* one (720X480). IMO, it's not the better way to go for material screening by agency as this DVD will have to be played with DVD player application from a computer or with a DVD player hooked on a TV set.
NB: To burn a Blu-Ray DVD you can use Roxio Toast with the correct Roxio plugin, but it' difficult to get a BR DVD burner right now. You can use standard def DVD blank to get a BR of 20 minutes in lenght. Search this forum with "Toast Blu-Ray DVD keywords.

  • Data files for Microsoft Outlook 2003

  • Can't send emails after migration from Vista PC to W7 PC. Tried Mozbackup and Windows Easy Transfer. Settings have transferred ok, it just won't send emails.

I recently migrated my Tbird from a Vista PC to a W7 PC using Mozbackup. Transfer was fine with all the settings transferred apparently correctly. But now I can receive emails but not send them. Sent emails show in 'Sent Items' but are not received the other end. Also tried the migration using the Beta 1 version of Mozbackup and also Windows Easy Transfer with the same result. IMAP and POP3 accounts are both affected. Neither can send emails. I get no error messages nor any bounceback.
Found on one forum that AVG can block outgoing emails so altered the AVG settings which seemed to solve the problem. The next morning the problem was back. I uninstalled AVG completely but it made no difference. I do have MicroSoft Sec Essentials but the problem was there before that was installed.
Using the BT Home Hub 5 on BT Infinity broadband. It can't be the router though as the old PC was sending emails fine. Although I did have the suspect AVG settings, removing it has not solved the problem.
The outgoing email settings seem to be fine. Any thoughts?

I haven't researched it and I don't claim to know everything about iTunes, but it has always been my understanding that you can only use one computer per iPod, but you can have multiple iPods per computer. From what I understand, this is to prevent illegal sharing and whatnot.

    Hi,
We are trying to zip / compress a xml file that has been created by retrieving data from SQL Server 2008 R2 database running on Windows Server 2008.
To compress this file, we cannot use any external softwares like 7-zip or WinZip.
So, we would like to know if there is any windows default compression tool that works on command line to compress the file?
As this is a live server we cannot apply any other softwares.
Please suggest any ways to do it in Windows Server 2008 machine.

I believe (although I don't want to put words in his mouth) that Madan has run across a similar problem that I am trying to solve.
For instance if I have the following files:
    c:\pic1.gif
    c:\pic2.gif
c:\pic3.gifand I zip them in to a file called: pics.zip the will unzip just fine.
However, if I have them in a directory:
    c:\pics\pic1.gif
    c:\pics\pic2.gif
c:\pics\pic3.gifA listing of the zip files (all using java of-course) will show the files and dirs correctly:
    \pics\pic1.gif
      \pics\pic2.gif
\pics\pic3.gifbut will give the following error if you try to un-zip them:
"The system cannot find the path specified"The ZipEntry class has an 'isDirectory()' method, but it only returns true in the case of an EMPTY directory. If , as in my example, there is an actual file at the end of the entry, it returns false.
So, at least in my case, I would be looking for advice on how to expand files that reside in directories within the zip file.
Thank You for any help you can provide

    Steve,
I appreciate your answer.  While it might work, I'm a bit hesitant to remove the other programs as a possible solution since they are all currently working.
With Acrobat 9 Pro failing with the OS 10.7 upgrade, I'm hoping that there is a less severe solution.
Since the trigger appears to be 10.7 and may have something to do with the discontinued support of Rosetta, I could be spending a few hours working on a reinstall without a change.  Yes, it might work.  The "might" is the part that makes me hesitate.
Is anyone else out there on OS 10.7 and running Acrobat 9 Pro?  Any issues with anyone else?
Thanks Steve.  I do appreciate your offering a solution.  I may end up trying it if nothing else comes together.
    Mark
