TS1307 Mail tends to forget that it viable smtp servers.

I have a brand new Mac Mini, running 10.8.2.
Problem: Mail tends to forget that it has one or more viable smtp servers.
It, periodically, will not send unless I manually run the connection doctor, which shows that all the servers are indeed there, and working properly.  After running the connection doctor, it will then succeed in sending the email.
I have multiple other macs that work fine, but not this one.
This would not be a problem but the machine is for the use of an 80 year old person.  It needs to be absolutely bomb proof, and it is not.
Suggestions?

I'm familiar with a similar sequence and situation.
In short: iPad.  Profiles.
In general, I'd suggest acquiring an iPad for the octogenarian; that works quite well.
As for the various triggers, remove and re-add the accounts and confirm the settings, as that can sometimes clean up the issues with a latent account corruption.
There's another possible trigger, where the settings are being tweaked by the user (whether intentionally or not), and you can use the profiles mechanisms to address that, and lock down the settings.
Another trigger I've encountered and that can toss up various weird errors are transient network problems; Mail.app is far too willing to toss a password dialog box, and that can lead (reasonably) to the user entering random passwords into the dialog box, and Mail.app can get tangled with other local WiFi connections.
Further down the list of things to check — but still possible — is flaky DNS.  Some ISP DNS is gnarly.

  • Mail does not connect to IMAP or SMTP servers

For a month or more Mail has been unable to connect to my Yahoo mail account and is now unable to connect to Google's email servers. I can connect to both these accounts on my iPhone and with other email clients like Outlook or Mailbox so I'm reasonably certain the problem is with the Mail app itself. Checking the connection doctor gives this error message for the both the Yahoo and Google IMAP servers: "Trying to log in to this Yahoo/Google IMAP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct." I copy and paste passwords from my password manager so I know they are correct. I'm running OS X 10.10.2 and Mail v. 8.2. Any suggestions?

  • How to set up two POP e-mail accounts using the same POP and SMTP servers

I have an e-mail address based on a domain I purchased which is based on my company name. Now retired, I have purchased a new domain with a simpler, personalised name. My original e-mail account uses the incoming (POP3) and outgoing (SMTP) mail servers operated by my ISP; mail.btinternet.com.
I have set up a new account on my PC in Microsoft Outlook, and have successfully sent and received emails using the new e-mail address taken from my new domain name.
I have now tried to mirror this on my iPhone, but every time I enter all the relevant data for the new e-mail address, user name, password, mail servers etc., and then press 'save', I get a pop-up which says: "xxxx" is Already Added  This POP account has already been added to your iPhone. ("xxxx" is the name given to my original e-mail account).  Nowhere have I input "xxxx" in the course of setting up the new account.
I need both accounts operational during an extended switch-over period as I alert everyone to the e-mail change over. Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?

What targeting the Mail.app preference file, do the following:
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
The only exception to this is if you have a .Mac account which will be recreated automatically and/or if you created an email account as part of the computer setup assistant when first turning on the computer when new.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailbox files at Home > Library > Mail.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.
Test if this resolves the problem.

  • A tip on how to get mail to work with O2 SMTP servers.

I found I had a problem in Mountain Lion where Mail could not log into the O2 SMTP servers even though I was using the exact same settings that were on my iPhone, iPad and MBP running Lion?
Well I finally found a solution.
In Mail open preferences and click on Accounts and select the account in the lefthand pane.
Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and in the drop down menu select Edit SMTP Servers to get:
Normally the radio button against Use Default Ports would be checked, instead check Use Custom Port and insert the number 25 and click OK.
Now back at the Accounts window click on Advanced at the top to get:
Make sure you have Port 110, on mine changing the SMPT to 25 also altered this to 25 so worth checking. When you have finished close the preferences and click on save, quite Mail then restart hopefully all should work now.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mail Will not send/receive.  SMTP servers (offline)

This change happened during normal operation.  Suddenly cannot send/receive mail.
    Any thoughs?

Hi CDog, I feel your sentiment from the "avatar" post you made and at the end lead me to this link. Have you used the Connection Doctor? It is helpful at times to check what particular errors you encounter. You might also want to create something like a public email (@gmail, @yahoo) and create a new account to test if it is an issue with the mail app or an issue with your smtp servers. Either the connection doctor or time will tell when your servers will be online. hope that helps and great caricature from Crumb

  • TS1307 Mail Jams in Outbox, Cannot be Switched to different Outbound

Having a log jam problem with mail in Mail (dumb product name).  Sending will sometimes just jam up hard. I have 8 different email accounts with 9 different outbound email servers. 8 of the outbound are SMTP and one is proprietary MS Exchange 2007.  7 of the inbound accounts are IMAP with one being proprietary MS Exchange 2007.
The log jam frequently occurs when I am switching off the corporate VPN to the internet hence the corporate MS Exchange accounts become unreachable.  I would expect the outbound email threads to see that MS Exchange is not responding and offer the redirection to a different SMTP (I have plenty). Unfortunately it just sits and spins (like a little kid calling ms-mommy!, ms-mommy!, ms-mommy!). Worse, the outbound mail system gets completely hung up and no additional email from any other account using an accessable SMTP server will go out.  And then much worse, I can open an and all of the email, attempt to redirect to an accessable and working outbound SMTP server and nothing happens.  And then to cap off the mess, Mail will not quit so I have to kill it via one of the several task manager 'gangsta style' executions.
Sum up, when mail is jammed I have tried and have not released the mail log jam by:
    1) kill and relaunch mail
    2) disconnect all network and let mail calmdown, then reconnect networking
    3) opening each email in the outbox and manually redirecting it to a known viable SMTP server
    4) moved all outbox email into a drafts mail box and then trying to send each one, once at a time, using a different SMTP outbound or different 'from' account all together
    5) rebuilding the outbound mail box after any of the aformentioned actions
I have had moderate success with:
    1) moving all email to a drafts email box,
1.1) then disabling the Exchange account,
1.2) then redirecting the email to new SMTP outbound server
1.3) then killing Mail if quit refuses to work (Mail I smite thee with a three finger salute!)
1.4) then relauching Mail if it needed a good smiting!
I feel that the 5 step process is not easily encorporated into my daily workflow %-).  It has been suggested that sacrificing a chicken might help but I ran out of sacrifical chickens during the days of SCSI debugging.
Based upon this and a plethora of other problems with Exchange use in Mail and via "Calendar" (dumb product name) I have come to the conclusion that Apple does not have a working solution that is compatible with MS Exchange.  Anyone disagree or know of a way to keep this log jam from happening short of Apple fixing it (not holding my breath on that one).
Last note, while I have seen this in conjunction with the use of MS Exchange as the host server, I have read elsewhere that such log jams occur on iPhone, iPad and Mac without mention of MS Exchange being involved. This suggests a general flaw in outbound mail handling in the core Mail engine (presuming it is shared between Mac OS and iOS and a rather poor multi-threading design.

Unless you plan to have multiple email accounts open in different tabs at the same time, there is no need for Multifox. If each user has their own [[profiles|profile]], then the Multifox extension will not be required. If you want to open multiple email accounts at the same time in one instance of Firefox then you will need Multifox.

  • How do I set up my mail to automatically reply that we are on holiday?

How do I set up my mail to automatically reply that we are on holiday?

    From Mail Help:
You can create a rule to have Mail automatically reply to incoming messages. For example, you can set up a rule that’s triggered by a specific subject so that Mail replies automatically to all messages with that subject.
This feature is useful if you receive a lot of similar messages from an online form on a website, and you want to reply automatically.
    To automatically reply to messages:
Choose Mail > Preferences and click Rules.
Click Add Rule and type a descriptive name for the rule.
Set the conditions necessary for the rule to apply to a message.
From the “Perform the following actions” pop-up menu, choose “Reply to Message.”
Click “Reply message text” and enter the text for your reply message.
Mail will include the text you enter, along with the full text of the original message, in the message that it sends.
Mail must be running to automatically reply to messages, because rules aren’t processed while your computer is shut down or you’re logged out. To set up automatic replies while you’re on vacation, ask your email service provider how to set up an out-of-office reply.
Carefully consider the rules you create for sending automated replies. If they’re too broad, you can send messages inadvertently or create message loops (replies to replies you sent). If possible, test the rule.
After a rule has processed a message, the message’s status icon changes to a gray arrow to indicate a reply was sent.

  • Mac Pro 'forgets' that it has optical drives

I have a Mac Pro which is exhibiting an unusual (and rather annoying problem).  It keeps forgetting that it has optical drives.  When I first turn it on, all works correctly.  I can access both optical drives normally.  After a while, however, it seems to 'forget' that it has optical drives connected.  It hasn't, so far, forgotten that it has optical drives while they are in use.  I can watch a DVD right through, for example, or write a disc - but if I leave it for too long without accessing the optical drives then it will forget that it has any until I next restart it.  If there is a disc in the drive when it forgets then I can't get the disc out until I restart, and if I try to access the drive then the program that I try to access it with will crash - and need to be force quit.  If the program is Finder then Finder won't restart until the computer is restarted.
The problem is limited the optical drives - I haven't, so far, had any problem with the hard discs.  If I don't use the optical drives at all then I can leave my Mac turned on indefinitely without difficulty - with the proviso that it will need restarting if I need to use the optical drives.
    Troubleshooting done so far:
Swapped the drives around and tried running with one optical drive only (no improvement seen)
Checked the system logs for clues and discovered them to be worryingly full of 'crap':

First, get a utility like Lion Cache Cleaner 6.0.9 and clear out all user, system, and font caches. Then try reinstalling OS X:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

The e-mail address I have tested it for several times and there is no problem.
Anyone has any clue about this error?

    Hi.
    This I have seen before...
It can be that the SMTP relay server is configured to only allow certain IP ranges or addresses.
It can be that the firewall on the SP server does not allow for SMTP traffic (normally 25, for example for Exchange).
It can be that there is an Antivirus on the SP server(Client AV) that prohobits the Timer service to send email from this server. I have seen MacAfee do this. Needed an policy change.
If, its the builtin SMTP service you are using, check this link:
    http://blog.sharepointrx.com/2010/11/18/setting-up-the-iis-smtp-server-for-sending-email-from-sharepoint-2010-on-server-2008-r2/
    Check that and try again.

  • HT1918 How do I change my RESCUE e-mail address, which, now thatI've moved, happens to be the same as my NEW e-mail address?

How do I update my e-mail address which is the same as my RESCUE e-mail address?  I have moved and cancelled my old ISP and any associated e-mails with them, and moved my email address to GMAIL.  It happens to be the same as my original Rescue email so I need to change the RESCUE email address and you don't give me that option on the Account/E-mail Change page, you just keep kicking me back to "Your email address can't be the same as your Rescue email address" and leave me hanging!

To change your rescue e-mail goto
    My Apple Id
    Then login and goto security
There should ask you for your security questions answer them and it will take you to a page where you can change them
On that page their should be an area that says "Rescue E-mail"
Click delete or change (if you click change type new rescue e-mail you want)
    After that click save
Then you can change your primary e-mail.
    Hope this helps
