TS1363 Since the latest iTunes update (on Win8 PC), none of my apple products will sync: iPhone 5; iPhone 4s; iPod Nano 6; iPod Nano 7

Question

The iPhones are recognized by the computer (and can backup to the cloud), but on connection, nothing happens with iTunes.
With the iPods I get the not-very-helpful message:
iTunes
An iPod had been detected, but could not be identified properly.
Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again.
blah, blah, blah.
On clicking More Info, I am presented with 10 steps to take.
I have done every single one of these steps, with the following added bonuses:  each time I have carried out any of the steps, I have disconnected the device; disconnected the leads; turned off the device; I have also uninstalled iTunes and installed 'the latest version'; I have restarted the computer, connected the device with brand new cables (the iPods require two different Apple cables: have tried both old and new versions of each).
Nothing I can do will make iTunes want to talk to these devices.  It all worked perfectly up until the latest v. of iTunes.
I am perfectly prepared to insert a new HD into the computer, build a new version of the station (either Win8, Win7, XP .... even Vista to make my day even worse), but feel that this is a little extreeme!
Am I alone in this Apple-strewn myre?

I kept working at this after posting. On the sync page for the ipod on itunes library I chose to remove the iPods association with my old computer. It erased all the old content from the old computer and then put all my checked songs from the new computer on my iPod nano.
