I DO NOT want to restart Firefox - and YES - I have RESET Firefox itself MANY TIMES - AND YES - I have the LATEST FIrefox - AND NO - I don't have any conflicting add-ins / extensions other than Fire FTP - and this happens ALL THE TIME - Does anybody know a workaround or a fix for this that won't mean restarting etc?

Possible Fix For When Windows XP Won't Recognize Your iPod

The fix detailed in this article worked for me when I couldn't get iTunes 7 to recognize my iPod in Windows XP. Sometimes when I force quit the iPodService.exe service, it worked the first time, but when I reconnected the iPod, it didn't appear in iTunes.

My issue was even more difficult;
I got a new 20 gb ipod photo, hooked it up to my computer, and ran updates. Afterward, it told me to unplug and reconnect my ipod. I did so, but it still just gave me the reeconnect logo on my ipod and did nothing else.
I tried changing the cable, nothing happened. I switched to my work laptop (windows XP pro, also), nothing happened. I tried my roommate's macbook, still nothing. I tried rebooting the ipod. It would still only show the reconnect icon.
No computer would recognize it and the ipod was also unrepsonsive, so I had no way to reset my ipod or anything.
I had realized that it never showed that it was actually hooked up to a power supply when it was plugged into anything, and I think this is because it was plugging into USB ports and not being recognized by me computer.
So, I took it out to my car, and plugged it into my cigarette lighter adapter.
Bingo, that did the trick, now it works with everything again.

[Fix] Windows 8 and 8.1: Easy fix for when you have forgotten your password.

Don't worry, It happens to everyone at some point. ;-)
If you are running Windows 8 or 8.1 you may be able to reset your password from another PC on the Microsoft website. This only works if you use a live account. If you do, you can access the password reset here: Microsoft Password Reset.
If you use a local account you can reset the password in the Command Prompt by following these steps:
Shut down the computer.
Turn on the PC and start repeatedly tapping F11 right away until it prompts you for your keyboard layout.
Select your keyboard layout.
Select Troubleshoot.
Select Advanced Options.
Select Command Prompt.
Type the following into command prompt: copy c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe c:\
Press enter and it should confirm that 1 file was copied.
Type the following into command prompt: copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
Confirm by pressing Y and hitting enter.
Close the command prompt and select Turn off your PC.
Turn on the PC.
Click the Ease of Access icon in the bottom left hand corner of the login screen. You will now notice that the icon will now open the command prompt instead of Ease of Access options.
In this command prompt window type: net user "yourusername" "yournewpassword" (without the quotes). NOTE: The username should show on the login screen, and is typically your name. If you're having trouble type net user and hit enter to see a list of users on the PC. For example, for me the actual command I would type would be: net user greatdekutree password123
Close the command prompt.
Log in with the password you chose for step 13. VOILA!
Now that you're back in we should get your Ease of Access settings back. It's pretty much the same few steps we did before but switch the commands:
Shut down the computer.
Turn on the PC and start repeatedly tapping F11 right away until it prompts you for your keyboard layout.
Select your keyboard layout.
Select Troubleshoot.
Select Advanced Options.
Select Command Prompt.
Type the following into command prompt: copy c:\utilman.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
Confirm by pressing Y and hitting enter.
Close the command prompt and select Turn off your PC.
I would also suggest that you create a password backup reset disc or USB drive now that you're back in Windows. See here for help with this: How to Create a Password Reset Disk on a USB Flash Drive in Windows 8 and 8.1.

Thank you both for your help...I have two questions related to this problem. The first one is do I lose any functionality by moving to the basic setting? That question is more out curiousity than anything. I also was reading that sometimes this problem in Windows 8 can be caused by video card drivers not being up to date. Do you all think updating my drivers maybe a good idea before trying the basic fix? I had assumed (bad idea) that because it was a new computer the drives would be up to date but from reading, I learned that is not always the case. Thanks again. Kirsten

Possible fix for when podcasts suddenly stop working

Just an FYI about a fix for a problem which a lot of other people seem to have had over the years, without a solution.
My own podcast was working fine for a year (I used iTunes 10 & 11 in Windows 7) and then suddenly I couldn't refresh it or stream episodes anymore. iTunes 10 would display a '3253 network connection reset' error. iTunes 11 would just show '!'.
I tried different computers (Macs and PCs) in different locations with different internet connections but no luck. Other people's podcasts worked fine. And I could load my own podcast xml feed in a browser and in other podcast software. It was just iTunes that didn't work.
I emailed Apple for some help ([email protected]) and after some back-and-forth they said this:
"It appears the hosting server for you podcast is blocking HEAD requests from iTunes. Please speak with your podcast hosting provider to allow HEAD requests from iTunes."
It turns out my hosting company had recently done a server upgrade and their firewall was indeed blocking it. They changed some settings and it was fine again half an hour later.
So if you have the same issue then it might be something that the podcast owner has to fix, and not a problem on your computer.

Safe boot should be an option as well as normal or without network
you could also try Windows DVD automatic repair, use last restore check point, make sure it had enough free space
also making a 2nd account and maybe use standard non-admin for general use
you installed a driver, or patch tuesday or your hibernation file used all the free space.

Time Machine never stops filling the drive. I have a total of 1TB to backup onto a 2TB drive using time machine. It just keeps filling the drive until it runs out and insists on a bigger drive

I have around 1TB to backup. I have a 2 TB backup drive. Time machine fills it in the first pass. It just makes no sense at all. Every hour, time machine mysteriously finds a few hundred more gigs to backup even though i have not used the computer. Now the disk is full and it's demanding a bigger backup drive. This is the second time this has happened.

There's clearly more than 1 TB to be backed-up. Either another internal HD (all internals are backed-up by default), or an external that's not excluded.
What's shown for Estimated size of full backup under the exclusions box in Time Machine Preferences > Options?

Also, besides the time and date being correct make sure the time zone is also correct. Also, if yo have iOS 5, make sure date&Time is set to Automatic.

Fix for when Compressor suddenly gets slow?

Hi all,
Apologies if I'm the millionth person to ask this, or something similar here! I have searched all over before asking, including the archives here.
Until today my compressor rendered out fine.. i'm converting 1080p ProRes to 720p MP4 for use on the web. For a project running a few mins long, Compressor took roughly 45 mins to produce the file.
Now, it's saying it will take 40 hours. I haven't changed -anything- except I made a small re-cut in my video (but rendered it before exporting in FCP) and I've bumped up the audio bitrate a little bit.
this happened once before, but I attributed it to the fact I was trying to render out from a USB 2 scratch disk (which I knew wasn't recommended).
anyway, there are lots of threads in this forum in which people mentioned slow compressor times, what fixes are there?
