"I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R"
    How? Using what equipment/software?
"The DVD  plays on the device on which it was recorded."
Just a guess: You're using a VCR-DVD combo recorder. DVDs produced in this way will play on the device that made them, but won't play on anything else until they're "finalized." In fact, Macs will recognize unfinalized DVDs as blank discs until the discs are finalized. Check the manual that came with the recording device for instructions.

You can probably import into a modern version of iMovie (8 or higher).
If you just wish to view the videos the free VLC player can play them back.

  • Itunes will not play through my MacBook pro speakers, how do i fix this?

So my itunes wont play throught my macbook pro speakers, is there a way to reset the preferences back to default? The speakers work because I can play youtube videos and hear the click when adjusting the volume.  Thanks for the help!

First check System Preferences/Sound - check all the settings to make sure mute is not selected.
    Repair permissions & restart.
Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs
Open up GarageBand if installed then, open a program (optional).
Quit out of the GarageBand app.

  • Itunes Movie Rental Not Playing

I just rented a movie from itunes, it said it was ready to play but i chose to watch later. When I hit play button, It goes into player mode but nothing happens, when i scroll through the film the still images apprear but its not playing.
    Can Anyone Help ?

I have the same problem. At first I got this message:
This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).
I have a brand new macbook pro 15" with a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 and 8GB of ram. I have purchased numerous TV episodes in both HD & SD and have no issues. i rented this movie yesterday and could only play it via my Apple TV. I haven't installed the latest OS update but my itunes is up to date and like I mentioned I can play everything else.
I just tried again after changing the setting to switch displays to save power. Now every time I try to play the movie it asks me to authorize my computer, then tells me its already authozied, then gives me a black screen in play mode with no movement on the play indicator.

  • Youtube video is not playing on my macbook pro laptop. I have norton anti virus and firewall installed on it.

youtube video is not playing on my mac pro laptop. Just a blank screen shows up where the video should be playing. I have norton anti virus and firewall installed on the laptop. Could it have something to do with it?

unless you have a partition for another operating system, such as Windows or Linux, most mac users would agree that any a/v software is completly unnecesary and will do more harm than good.  There is a free a/v in the appstore called "ClamXav.   Have you installed all software updates and also have you tried youtube using different browsers (chrome, safari, opera, etc)?

  • I removed my optical drive because i added an ssd hard drive. when i plug in the dvd to usb it will not play from the macbooks dvd program. the error message is there was an initialization error, a valid drive could not be found.

I can go into disk utility and see the optical drive and mount what ever cd is in the drive and quicktime will play it. but i would like to have the dvd program recognize the optical drive and open what ever is in it.

Freakin amazing! I installed a new 1TB Samsung SSD in my main hard drive slot and moved my old hard drive into my DVD slot and moved my DVD to an external DVD case and it would never work with movies, only software disks. I have Late 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks with 1TB Samsung SSD and a 512GB HDD in the DVD slot with my DVD in an OWC external DVD case.
I tried this trick but at first, this did not work because OxED was saving the new file as a text file and not a unix file. I was perplexed until I read the comments below the article and found the tip to use Terminal to change the saved file to a Unix file. I have never used Terminal before and I had no clue what I was doing, but I just followed the steps to a T and it worked. It took two tries with Terminal.
The comment mentioned "Code:" so I typed that along with the rest and it didn't work. I tried it again and this time just typed
chmod +x (with a space after the x) then dragged and dropped the saved dvd file from my Desktop into Terminal and hit enter. Worked great. Thank you. I have my DVD player back.
I also had to play around with some permissions and I had to remove the original file completely from the "A" folder, before I dropped the new file back in.
Took a little work, but I am back up and running. Thanks to all who contributed to this and yet OWC definitely needs to have all this in their manual or even provide a disk or software download that does this automatically.
Here is the trick: http://macenstein.com/default/2011/07/how-to-get-your-external-super-drive-worki ng-in-lion/
Be sure that the new file saves as a Unix file. If it doesnt save as Unix, you will need to:
    Open Terminal.
    Type:    chmod +x
…with a space at the end (and do NOT press enter yet).
Then, drag the saved file you want to change from whereever it is saved and drop it on top of the Terminal window. The file path and filename should automatically fill in (and you should ensure that there’s a space between “+x” and the file path).
    Press enter.

  • Movie rental not playing.

I rented "once" on itunes. It payed for it, downloaded and put it in my library. It even started the 24 hr countdown, but instead of playing it, it just crashes my computer.
All of the movies I've purchased work on my computer, only the ne that I've rented crashes the system.
How do I get a refund?
I don't really want to rent movies on there anymore, I just want my money back.

You should have received a receipt for that movie rental. So on the receipt, click "Report Problem" next to the item name. You'll be redirected to the iTunes, then just explain what happened to you.
I also think you should not blame Apple for that, once your problem comes possibly from you computer and not from the Service you bought!

  • Rental not playing

    Hi All,
I rented two movies from the itunes store and was intially getting an itunes error message when I tried to play them. Having followed the instructions on the support page, I no longer get that error message, and the movie appears in the top bar as if about to play, but the movie doesn't actually open. Please someone help, I'm hopeless with this stuff.

  • Movie rental not playing 6 hours remaining

My partner rented a movie last night and watched most of it. This morning, I wanted to watch the movie since I wasn't available last night. My Apple TV says I have 6 hours remaining on my rental. When I try to play it, it freezes. I try to skip ahead a chapter, and it pauses. I try to fast forward, and it pauses.
I would like to know how I can fix it
    OR
how I can get a refund.

I thought so, however I just unplugged it and it seems to have done the trick.

  • Frustration rental not playing

I just purchased ATV this weekend and rented my first HD movie last night all went well. Then tonight I went to rent "Ratatouille" HD The movie started to download then after an hour of frustration and showing nothing but 14% on the screen we gave up and are now going to bed completely defeated. After an hour of searching online to find a phone in support but still found nothing. At least Cable On Demand you can call them up and they will sort it out right away for you. Where do you go for Techinical Support? Has this happend to anyone before.
Last night the movie started playing after 1% was downloaded which was about 2 minutes or less later.
Not very good and not a good way to start with a product.

This is all about your ISP and the bandwidth they give you. If you are on a shared connection (cable) you will have less bandwidth as more people in your area go online. If you are going to call someone about this it would be your ISP.
