I have an iMac 24" system. I just recently installed MAC OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) on my system. Since doing so, my system consistently hangs. Particularly when using iMovie and iPhoto. I have to power off my system to get it running again. Any suggestions on what I can do  to address this situation.

I would first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
Let us know if these  procedures don't solve the problems.
Hope this helps

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

CS5 is one app that can benefit from 24GB for most users, and even 48GB if you need to push and stress things, but there too the processor GHz matter and 3.3GHz would help (4-cores) while save to disk or export is single threaded for most part.
I'd defer to the test but where and type of drive that Aperture uses, and system, that does matter, and there are times when editing will create a lot of temp files and shadow copies that you may not see.
Using memory as a primary scratch area (system and application data cace) but I doubt iMovie has been uptimized fully.

  • Scrambled graphics in iMovie and iPhoto

When using iMovie and Wondershare Video Editor I get scrambled graphics which has now spread to iPhoto. Will my iMac recover by itself or is this a sign of a damaged graphic card or similar. Graphics on the internet seem to be working OK. I'm using 4GB ram, is this perhaps not enough memory for intensive work with video editing and editing in PhotoShop?

Be patient. Apple's servers are currently inundated. Try again later or tomorrow.

  • Why can't I download iMovie and iPhoto?

    Hello,
After upgrading to Yosemite I found that Internet connection was slow, and dodgy, so I took it to the Apple Store and re-installed Mavericks
Internet worked fine, it was fast again, etc.
I tried to open iMovie and iPhoto
    Not there
    I checked in Launchpad
    Not there either.
I checked on the App Store.
    Yup.
    $19 for iMovie
What is this? I was using iMovie and iPhoto before Yosemite, but now I can't use it.
I shouldn't lose my Apps because Apple made a dodgy update

I don't think it's a dodgy upgrade, a handful report issues with their Mac and millions have no issues whatever. It works perfectly here.
If you had the iLife apps before, they should be listed in your account in the Purchases pane for download. However, the Mac App Store usually carries the most recent version. The most recent version doesn't run on Mavericks. You should always make a backup of your Mac, especially before something so major as an OS X upgrade. Then you would have the Mavericks versions to restore to your Mac again running Mavericks.
Not sure what you can do at this point.

Is there anyway to take a downloaded app from one computer and put it on another without rebuying it. I have a macbook that I bought the new iMovie and iPhoto on, but I would rather it be on my iMac. So is there anyway I can change it? I thought that if I bought it the apps on my macbook, they would be avaliable on my imac like the mobile devices operate. Just redownload it on the other computer by logging into the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to purchase it.

    Hi...
Delete both apps using this utility >  Download AppCleaner for Mac - Uninstall your apps easily. MacUpdate.com
That will delete the apps and all associated files.
Then re download the apps. That will download the most recent version updates included.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

  • Lost imovie and iphoto after system reinstall, and couldn't find ilife DVD either

after i reinstalled my OS system, imovie and iphoto stopped functioning -- i can still see the icons in Application, but when i tried to open them, error messages popped up. For example, for imovie, i got "The QuickTime components necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies are not installed. These components are included with the iMovie installer; please re-install".
i know that i should reinstall them, but the problem is: i bought my Macbook Pro in 2010, and it either came with ilife components installed, or it come with an ilife DVD (but i couldn't find it). In such a case, is there anyway to get them back without purchasing new ones?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Brie-
I haven't replaced the music in my back catalog of iMovies. That would be quite a project.
I did try a burned DVD and that played fine.
As a test, I once again purchased a song on iTunes but I can't import it into either iMovie or iTunes.
I'm running Quicktime 7.4.1. and not 7.5 because when I did the automatic 7.5 download all my iMoves lot sync. That wasn't the 'hang' problem, it was more like watching on YouTube where the frame rate and the audio don't match up.
I backed up my system, erased and reinstalled. Once I came to the 7.5 update, I had the problem again. Then, I did an archive and install - OSX, ilife, and all the upgrades except QuickTime 7.5. Along the way, I tested iMovie to see how it worked.
Instead of going all the way to 7.5, I did 7.4.1 which was the one before. My iMovies are now all in sync but, I'm not authorized to import or play. I did all the steps to reauthorize but I'm at my present impasse.
I'm sure that if I upgrade to Quicktime 7.5, I'll be back in the YouTube out of sync mode. I also didn't reinstall any 'flip4mac' or 'Slick' software (all of which worked perfectly until the 7.5 upgrade.)

  • I had iMovie and iPhoto now i reset computer and it is asking for me to pay again how can i get it for free in my imac

Rest computer now imovie and iphoto are gone how can i get it back without paying again....

What do you mean you "reset the computer?" Please be very specific, remember we are not there to see what you did.
Also unless you did a erase adn install they are both still there, probably safely in the Applications folder.

  • Lost imovie and iphoto

I have installed Tiger on my g4 imac and forgot to save imovie and iphoto can anyone please explain how I restore old system (ie what order the discs go in ) and how do i start again with tiger

Assuming your iMac G4 shipped with Panther 10.3.x and later the
system was upgraded by installing Tiger over Panther content, so
the Panther-level's iLife components were carried over in Tiger...
And your later Tiger retail installer, having none of that within it,
does not give you iPhoto or iMovie, etc with a new full install.
The Panther restore and install original disc set may be able to
provide raw materials to use Pacifist: http://www.charlessoft.com/
and hope it can make use of those Panther-vintage bits on disc
to assemble and install a working iPhoto and iMovie from them.
I'd tried Pacifist to install a Tiger-vintage iPhoto in a computer
which had been wiped and upgraded past the original Panther
with a retail Tiger 10.4.0 DVD installer and was able, after three
tries, to get a working iPhoto 5.x version. Or I think it works.
    {This was from a non-working iBookG4's restore/install DVD.}
To find a good condition stand alone iLife 06 or 07 may be a
better way to go, since that should be Tiger compatible as
well as being able to run in the older PowerPC G4 machine.
The video or graphics hardware, and need to have a DVD
or super drive, limits some of the later iLife software titles.
Some iMac G4s can't really use the last iLife versions, not
to the degree you'd hope; given they are vintage, not Intel.
I have found a good tool to have, even with iPhoto on the
same computer, in ToyViewer. It runs free and has tools.
And it can do more than most beginners may need, well.
ToyViewer 4.92 free running image software:
    http://homepage.mac.com/t_ogihara/software/OSX/toyv-eng.html
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • IMovie and iPhoto '08 - Crashing hard

Has anyone else experienced repeated crashes (system level) with iMovie and iPhoto '08? I mean where you have to use the power button to restart the computer...
I have a new iMac (2007) and haven't done much messing with loading extensions and utilities. So I would expect it to be stable as Apple could make it. And yet, I still get that Spinning Colorwheel with both these new iLife '08 products. Anyone else?
    --Naseer

This last time I had downloaded Adobe Flash Player DMG file which created that "virtual disk." After installing, I pulled it to trash which "ejected" it. But iMovie was in the background at that time. The computer only proceeded to the non-responsive state when I switched to iMovie and did a Quit.
Doesn't sound like the same thing. I my example, iMovie thinks there is a video camera connected to the computer and attempts to import the (in my case) unencrypted VOB files. So it reads the files and generates thumbnails for all the video and places it in a new and separate "Import" selection window. This, of course, seems to take forever and all the while the beachball is spinning away any time the cursor hovers above anything "active" as a part of iMovie.
What do you see when you first open iMovie '08 -- any modal messages displayed?
Isn't there supposed to be all sorts of protected multi-tasking controls to prevent this kind of thing these days with a modern OS?
Have you checked the "Activity Monitor" to see what is actually going on? In my case the computer is functioning properly but CPU is being "Hogged" by iMovie to perform tasks it shouldn't be doing. To remedy the situation, all I have to do is close the open file/image that iMovie '08 thinks is a "camera."

  • Question about how Mac OS X stores file information for iMovie and iPhoto

I'm relatively new to Macs (am using a 3yr old iMac and a new MBA running 10.6.4 and iLife 11) and I have this general question.
I'm using the iMac for a lot of Movie projects and photos. I've very quickly filled up my 500Gb hard drive and I don't understand why other than this:
I import a movie using iMovie and it's stored in an Events folder. I then make a project and it's stored in an Projects folder, I then share it to iTunes and it's stored in the iTunes Music/Movies folder. And I also see the movie in an iMovie Shared folder. In other words, it appears that a 2Gb movie (as an axample) becomes about 10Gb because it's saved in multiple places. Must I keep all of them?!
With iPhotos, I've imported about 6Gb of photos from my Windows PC. No problem. I copied across all the directories and then imported them into iPhoto. I then thought I could delete all the directories as the iPhoto folder became 24Gb in size! Not sure how but it seems that as well as keeping my original 6Gb of photo directories it's also put them into the iPhoto directory and somehow made it a big folder size?! If I delete the original folders (since they're now in the iPhoto app folder) then I can't actually browse the JPGs files can I except from within iPhoto only?
I've got about 80Gb of music, about 6Gb of photos and about 80Gb of movies. Somehow it's pretty much filled up 500Gb of hard drive (and very little other programs or files other than the normal iMac stuff it comes with) because of the way the Mac (iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto) seems to have the same thing copied everywhere.
All input greatfully receive and apologies if I'm being thick.
    Richard.

    Richard
I'll answer the iPhoto part for you.
If you use iPhoto in its default setting then the images are copied into the Library on import. Yes you can now delete the directories you have copied over.
then I can't actually browse the JPGs files can I except from within iPhoto only?
    Yes and no...
The point of iPhoto is that it's your Photo Manager. It's the "go-to" app when you want to do anything with your Photos. - View them, edit them, email them, print them, use them in other apps, upload them whatever - all of these things are done from iPhoto.
There are two advantages to working this way.
    1. You get to work with your Photos and don't have to think about files. This means the organisation possibilities are much greater than just files in folders. You can use Keywording, Smart Searching, Albums, Events and a plethora of other bases for categorising and therefore find your pics.
    2. iPhoto is integrated throughout the entire OS. That means your Library is available throughout the OS without iPhoto being open by means of Media Browsers. You can search your Library from a MEdia Browser and so on.
So, while, yes, the files are not browsable via the Finder, there's no need to. Everything you need to do can be done with iPhoto.
Want to edit the pics in something other than iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Imovie and iphoto

I recently upgraded my system from panther to tiger. When I did this, I did not use an archivial restore/ install, I erased everything, then put tiger on my computer. I noticed tonight that imovie and iphoto are no longer on my computer. Does anyone know why, or what I can do to get these applications back on my computer? Also, my automator is not working because these two applications are no longer on my computer.

    Hi Lauren,
    welcome to this fourm
.... well, you made a mistake...- the iApps are NOT part of the system software since version 2.... you have to buy them extra...- with a clean install you have erased them, gone, nirvana, zero...-
    BUT!!
... you should have installer cds/dvds with you iBook...- you should be able to re-install the older versions... best practise anyhow is, to buy iLife05 in combo with 10.4.......-
