Turn mesh tool curves (perfect) into path curves?

um heading says it all..
I created some lovely curves using 'envelope distort - mesh tool' & want to make it a path, cause i can't possible pen tool that perfection!
make me happy!

lyonbird,
As a more straightforward solution, you might consider using a Blend with specified steps between two paths (with corresponding Anchor Points), and expand it to get individual paths.

If I read this correctly, you want to make a screen cast of yourself working on an image in Photoshop, right?
You would need to use screen capture software like Adobe Captivate, Tech Smith's Camtasia or possibly Jing.

  • Photoshop CS6 path curve issue

Prior to Photoshop CS6, a curve on a path could be moved using the Direct Selection Tool without altering the path beyond the two enclosing points. If you manipulated the curve, only the inside handles of the two points (that create the curve) would change - and only in length - as shown below:
Unfortunately, in Photoshop CS6, if you manipulate the path curve with the Direct Selection Tool, the handles both sides of the points move freely - affecting the path beyond those points:
    - Please, is there a way to revert to the prior behaviour? The Photoshop CS6 behaviour may seem more intuitive (or something), but it's less precise and alter parts of the path that are fine already.

    Thank-you very much for this!
I only ever use the Direct Selection Tool by holding down command whilst using Pen Tool - and Pen Tool itself does not show that option! Solved - thanks.

  • My Curve fell into a glass of coffee

My Curve fell into a cup of coffee.... I dried out my phone and then let it dry in rice for a day or so... I tried turning it on and only the red light came on.  I then plug it into the charge and i got a picture of a battery with a lighting bolt through the picture of the battery.... What does that mean?  Do I need to get a new battery?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I assume you removed the battery while drying the unit? Battery icon with lightning strike through it should only appear when the unit is charging. Give it a an hour on charge and then test.

  • How can I find a turning point or inflection point on the curve?

I have encountered a problem, is seeking a turning point or inflection point on the curve.
The curve is monotonically increasing (slope is essentially the same); the slope tends to 0 after the turning point. Because of the curve is not actually a straight line, so the derivative of point by point seems comparison difficult.
First, I intercepted two new curves from the curve.  One with monotonically increasing slope and another with remained constant slope. And I transform the two new curves to two absolutely straight with “regression” filter. Then find the intersection point of two absolutely straight. Through the X coordinate of the intersection point to find the corresponding Y value on the curve.Turning point is (x, y).
However, this method can only be used for a fixed curve. Because the range of the intercept values need to give the range, if the new changes in the overall length of the curve, the value of this range may no longer apply.
My question is:  Is there a better way, or Diadem functions associated itself can solve this problem?
Any of your ideas and suggestions is important to me, thanks very much.
    Best Regards

    Hi J. Huang,
I would recommend the following generic approach, based on the pictures you submitted:
    1)  Create a smoothed channel from the raw data curve to remove random variations
    2)  Calculate a derivative/slope channel from the smoothed channel
    3)  Use the ChnFind() function to find the points where...
the slope is close to zero
            the slope is positive
            the raw data is positive
the raw data is close to the maximum channel value

  • Mesh Tool on Irregular Shape

When I add a horizontal mesh line on my non-square object I am left with lines that swoop outside the boundaries of the object. Why does it do this? How can I prevent it? I've tried dragging the handles but they result in drastic changes that cannot be predicted. I've also tried using the convert point tool because all i really want are some perfectly straight horizontal lines that I can manipulate using the add point tool. I don't need beziers and want to rid of them.
Here are some screenshots of what I am experiencing. Notice in the 2nd how the green line curves outside the boundaries of my object.

The mesh tool does a terrible job on many shapes. My rule is any shape with a concavity requires masking. Use a rectangle or oval for your mesh object and mask that with the path you are trying to use.

  • How to control the mesh tool?

I am wanting to use the mesh tool but I need to know how to control my lines. I want a starting point and an end point but when I click the starting point is decided by me but the end point is decided on its own, and it is not the end point I want. I want a straight line (with some curves) but I am getting a diagnol line. How can a control this?

This is an image of what I've been doing. See my lines. I wasn't even getting straight lines but I fixed it up someway.
Now look at their image. The lines are going perfectly in the direction they are wanting here. How are they doing it.

  • The Mesh Tool

    Hi folks!
How would I approach a picture of a person regarding the mesh tool? I have tried creating the basic path around the whole person - but when I add the mesh tool it looks like world war three has broken out....?!
I thought about dividing up the person to arms, legs, hands, etc - but then you have a problem with gradients accross to paths or do you....?
Can anyone give me any tips on this and how to approach such a large project.
    bookie56

I have tried creating the basic path around the whole person.
That's the basic problem, and the nearly universal misunderstanding when first dinking around with Mesh Envelopes and Grids.
Generally speaking, don't start with an outline of the shape you ultimately want to end up with; start with a geometrically simple shape that the Mesh tool can make horizontal/vertical sense out of as you add the main divisions; then reshape the outlines and Mesh lines to the desired shapes.
Understand and then always bear in mind: No matter how you eventually distort the Mesh patches,  the Mesh tool basically creates patches which are arranged in rows/columns. They even have a stacking order. Think of a Mesh object as a collection of squares which share edges and corners and can't be separated. You certainly don't want to leave the Patches shaped as squares; you want their edges to eventually follow the coloring tones and/or shape contours of what you're drawing. But no matter how you distort them, each patch is still defined by four MeshPoints; the program still "thinks" of them in terms of rows/columns.
As with auto-tracing, you have to bear in mind that the program can't read your mind. It has no shape-recognition intelligence whatsoever. If you, for example, start with an outline shape that you and every other human intuitively recognize as a sillhouette of an arm, the program just sees a meaningless irregular path with a given number of anchorPoints. When you click in the middle of the shape to create two Mesh divisions, expecting the "arm" to be divided along its "length" (for example, from shoulder down to wrist), the program doesn't see any of that. It just tries to make a horizontally/vertically oriented grid of four patches. So you have to start simple, let the program do the simple things it does, and then reshape those simple things into shapes that humans recognize as shape and shading.

  • Mesh tool - straight lines

I was wondering if there was a way to make the lines of the gradient mesh tool straight by default. I know you can drag in the handles so that you don't get curves between mesh points but every time I add a new mesh line it creates more mesh points with long handles and I have to drag them in to the mesh point for each one. It's incredibly frustrating.

Use the Crazy Lines Tool to fix the problem
Seriously though, how about a screenshot so we can see what crazy lines look like.

  • Mesh tool not working properly

    Hello,
The mesh tool will only let me create new mesh points on a path, it will not let me create a mesh point anywhere I want on an object. For example if I use the rectangle tool and create a rectangle it will only let me create mesh points on the path around rectangle...not anywhere in the middle of the rectangle like it should. I should be able to create a mesh point anywhere in the rectangle, but it will not let me.
Is there a setting a might have turned off? Please help, this is important!

Yes in the Illustrator preferences there is a option under Selection and Anchor Display to select objects by the path only uncheck that option.

All Splines in AI are Bèziers. There is no way to create other curve types. For the rest simply refer to the help on how to use the path tools.
    Mylenium
I know that all splines are Bezier's, a.k.a Bezier invented them (please CMIIW).
    For example:
    B-spline = Bezier's spline
NURBS = Non-Uniform Rational Bezier Surface
I think all of the curves created by using the pen tool is a linear, quadratic, and cubic Bezier curve.
I hope you understand what I am talking about.

  • Mesh tool appears inactive?!

    Hi,
I did not find any other similar questions.
I am trying to use the Mesh Tool, but it appears to be inactive. The cursor looks like a cross with a small crossed circle nets to it (like a "do not pass" road sign). I do not know what I did wrong. In Preferences I have "Object selection by path only" deselected, so it can't be it.

    Thank you for your reply.
    I am following a tutorial:
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2012/10/03/gradients-galore-reviewing-illustrators-extensi ve-toolset-video-tutorial/#more-140468
I don't think the image is a Compound Image. I used the Ellipse Tool and the Pen Tool to build it. I am working in Outline Mode (just like the person in the tutorial).
Now I think it might be the problem. I probably have to switch between Outline and Preview constantly to make it work. I am working on the 7:45-12:00 part of the tutorial. (if you have the time to check this out)

  • How to use the mesh tool

I am not sure how to use the mesh tool

it can be tricky! it's best to use with geometric shapes and not random figures that you create with the pen or brush tools.
so lets say you wanted to make an apple using a real picture for reference. first off, you'd place the picture of the real apple in the background. next, you would choose the circle tool to create a circle around the apple. then, you would use the mesh tool and press the center anchor to create a simple grid looking form onto the circle. grab the selection tool to move around the anchor points surrounding the apple to make a more accurate outline. after this step, it's easier to add more anchor points for the actual apple! all you must do is grab the pen tool and add more anchor points along the path and use the selection tool to move the anchor points around the apple; eventually it'll look somewhat like a 3D graph of an apple. important tip to remember, the less lines the better. but a few are okay.
so after you've graphed/mapped out your apple you're going to want to press the selection tool and use your eyedropper tool to get an accurate color of the spot/anchor you selected. the basic point of the mesh tool is to outline a picture,@ and with the eyedropper tool you can use the exact colors from the original picture you're working from. i learned this technique from class. here's my example it can be a really useful tool if it's what you're looking for.

  • Question about gradient mesh tool

Hello, I am using the gradient tool for the first time and when I touch on an object to lay a gradient, the mesh seems to choose a set of anchor points to anchor to.  If I want to anchor the gradient mesh to different points, how do I change them?

You need to keep in mind that the mesh is always constucted like a table. It has 4 corners. It's possible to set these 4 corners. All the other points are somewhat dependant on them, but can be moved using the gradient mesh tool. Read the manual on that.
    To set the 4 corners:
Assumind you have a path that consists of at least 5 points.
Select 4 points with the direct selection tool
    OpenObject > Create gradient mesh
    Enter values -> OK

  • Recalcitrant mesh tool handles or...

...I am ignorant on usage. Just decided to try out the mesh tool. When I try to adjust the control handles I get unpredictable results - the mesh lines jump around and are acting un-controlable.
Is there anyone who has had this problem?
    Thanks much

Yeah sorry that wasn't very elaborate. Attached is a screen cap.
Notes: System: Win XP Illus Version: CS2
User Skill Level: Rookie - I have no primary vector tool, using several over the years. Was heavy into Freehand while working in auto industry at a company doing tech illustration. Switched to Xara when I moved into freelancing - also learned Inkscape*, and have stuck to using regular gradients. I finally picked up a used version of Illustrator at Amazon because so many clients want stuff done in Illustrator (Mostly doing stuff in Xara and Inkscape and exporting it to Illustrator). So I am still pretty green in Illustrator.
I decided to experiment with the mesh tool. I am altering it to fit the contours lines of an automobile.
I started with a rhomboid matching the prespective of the side of the vehicle and created several grid lines - then started shaping it to the vehicle contour lines. I looked - snap to point was on. Snap to grid was not. Not sure if that is enough info.
*Before getting razzed too much for using Inkscape : I like the way the line tool works in the following regard: If you delete a point along an arc, the line of the arc stays the same. This is incredibly handy at times. Plus - if carefull - I could take Xara into Inkscape - into Illustrator
