  • Turn off sound effects for iTunes volume changes?

I've started getting audible squirt-noises each time I use the F9 or F10 or F11 keys to raise or lower iTunes volume. How I go back silent changes?
I've checked iTunes help and Googled a few things and unchecked all the sound effects in Apple System Preferences but no luck. I want to keep using the keys, not the slider.
    Thank you

Did you mean to ask this in the Tiger OS forum? Your computer information says you are running Leopard. I can request this post be moved to the correct forum.
In Tiger you can toggle "play feedback when volume is changed" in the System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects preference pane.

  • Turning off sound alerts altogether

I've plugged in headphones to my iBook, but get annoying sound effects as I work in Microsoft Word, with sounds everytime I cut/paste, drag a word, etc. and at the same volumn as the music I'm listening to on the headphones. I work a lot on Word and want to turn off sound alerts altogether but don't see that option.

Did you look in your Word Preferences?

  • How do I turn off graphic effect of Open File dialog box?

There is a graphic effect in OSX 10.4.11 of a slot appearing in the top of the window of programs like Safari 4.1.3  and then an 'Open file..' dialog box emerges from the slot and warps downwards. This is almost guaranteed to crash my Mac!
Please, how can I turn off this effect?
    Thanks!
[You don't need to read any further but my problem relates to an archived thread:

In brief, the thread is about some of the old white Imacs over-heating and causing graphics problems.
    I still have a largely useable Imac because I avoid using any graphic effects that cause system crashes: Dock graphic effects, Genie minimise feature, Exposé, and full-screen video feature in Youtube.}

I wonder if Quartz isn't the problem & using the Safe Boot driver...

  • Turning off visual effects for performance purposes

I've recently started using a Mac. I've been a PC user all my life, so I'm unfamiliar with how my new machine works.
I'm going to be using this computer for audio recording, and with that, I want as much power out of my computer as I can get. I know with Windows, there are ways to turn off visual effects, like window shadows and things like that in order to save processing power for other things. Is there a way to strip down OS X in the same way?

back in the day (OS 7/8/9) you had what was called t he extension manager. when i would work in cubase i had an extension set that was stripped down - similar to what you are asking.
now things are different. OS X is very efficient.
the only thing you need to do is only run the apps you need to have open (don't have mail, internet, etc. running while recording)
there are 3rd party apps that will remove window shadows, etc. - but I don't think it is necessary.
Max out your ram, and only run the apps you need running and you should be fine.

    debrafromusa,
This would be an extremely bad idea, the start up tone is there for a reason. It tells you when your system is attempting to  boot, it is also necessary in the even resets like a PRAM reset are done. There is software to mask the sound however as stated it is a very poor idea.
Also, why turn it off. Why not simply put the display to sleep when the machine is not in use. You can easily do that in System Preferences - Energy Saver

  • Turn off animation effects to prevent nausea?

I've spent an hour poking through the forums, but couldn't find this issue addressed (maybe I'm using the wrong keywords), anyway:
I just got an iPod Touch yesterday and while I love it in theory, in practice I can't use it for more than a few minutes without getting motion sickness from all the sliding and flipping when switching between screens and momentum scrolling. Is there a way to turn off these effects or reduce them? I would like to be able to use this device without wanting to vomit for hours afterward just because of interface animations.

Thanks for the responses (well, most of them -- I'm not getting drugged up because Apple can't design their operating system without "bling," heh).
It's not the finger brushing. I have a similar (unfortunate) reaction to modern computer games with moving 3D graphics (e.g. first-person shooters and those explore-your-surroundings type of games).
I have turned off the effects in apps like Stanza, but unfortunately just navigating the apps and reading my mail (unnecessary sliding pages) is barf-inducing.
Rats. I can scroll as long as I don't lift my finger so the momentum scrolling isn't engaged, but I'd really like to get rid of the sliding effects when switching between screens/home pages.

  • Global way to turn off sound?

My main stage is playing a series of MIAWs and I want a way
to shut down sound channels 1-7, leaving 8 open for sound effects
used by the stage. It's a touch screen application and the client
wants the option to turn off the music but retain the audible
clicks and other sound effects for user interaction.
    I've tried setting sound(myChannel).volume = 0 where
myChannel is looped 1-7. I've tried this both in the main stage
just before the MIAW is opened and also in the first frame of the
MIAW itself. I manage to shut down any lingo activated sound but
sound effects dropped into the two score sound channels still play.
I didn't write the MIAW's, I don't want to put conditional tests in
those movies every time a sound is played. Is there a global way to
shut down a specific sound channel that can not be overridden by
    the score?

On Fri, 12 May 2006 14:31:21 GMT, Applied CD posted in

    > on), after the second B1 sound is on in channel 1 (and
    still Director

I'll take a couple of stabs at it.
If you're using the sound channels in the score, you may need
    to have an
empty frame between the sound sprites. Sort of giving
    Director time to
take a breath before starting the next sound. Or you might
    try using Lingo
    to play the sounds instead.
If they're not already, make sure the sounds are all sampled
    at the same
rate and bit depth. This may be needed even if using Lingo to
    play the
    sounds.

  • Turn off 3D effects?

I'm used to using Mac OS X via X-Windows, rather than the GUI. But I need to use the GUI to profile with Shark (command-line Shark is too limited), and I'm having trouble, because my sight is not normal. Because I only have one eye, the 3D effects of Leopard are not helpful - they're just confusing. In particular, I'd like to turn off the shadows that windows cast on the desktop, and the 3D perspective effect of the Dock.
I've looked at Universal Accessibility, and my sight isn't so bad that it's helpful. I can use Leopard as it stands, with the screen resolution on this CRT display turned down fairly low to make things bigger, a large Dock and a plain-colour desktop. But the 3D effects are continuously annoying - immagine trying to do sound mixing when someone is drilling a few rooms away - and I can't find a way to turn them off in System Preferences.

You can download a program like Superdocker to turn off the 3D effect (among other things). It's at: http://www.ed-shiro.net/en/?page_id=3. Or, you can simply move the dock to the side of the screen instead of the bottom, it automatically turns to a 2D dock then (you can grab it and drag it or go to System Preferences | Dock).
I am not sure how to disable shadows in Leopard. Shadow Killer did so for Tiger, but it hasn't been updated for Leopard...yet. Here's the website so you can keep an eye on it for when they do: http://unsanity.com/haxies/shadowkiller
