Turning back time...

Hi,
I have done something stupid.. well thats what I assume as I just cannot restore back to a few days ago !!!
It all started with the power being cut out 3 times, and the 3rd time is was just downloading some photos from my camera. When the power went on again I turned the computer on and looked at iPhoto to see if the photos transferred or not.. 4 photos did and that was all there was in my library.
So I did print out some paperwork when I got my Time Capsule about restoring etc etc, grab these and started heading into the TM with iPhoto open. I could see the latest back up from that morning so I went into the library and clicked restore.
Thats when the next thing happened, my 2 year old son.. I got distracted, my husband had a look at the computer and said there a 3 options here.. bla bla and bla and i said bla. ( in other words God knows what the options were for restoring the library and because my son was being a @(@$*$ toddler I just said replace ) and thats what my husband clicked and we continued with our son.
Opened iPhoto and 4000 photos were transferred, but missing about 1200. All in one batch, not in events. Missing the last 18 months of photos.
Went back again into TM but now after restoring it said that an error had occurred so could transfer.
Attached my camera to computer and iphoto said something about an invalid library, I had to create a new one, which I did.
I knew that I was just digging myself deeper and deeper, did it anyways.. ( told you in the beginning i was stupid )
After this I tried to migrate my old photos over, all looked good after a night of dragging them over, but when I wanted to add some photos from my phone to the library it refused them, then I noticed that if i deleted a photo out of this library it would return after I would restarted iphoto.
So I tried re installing Snow Leopard. I tried it with the  TC attached to computer and tried it with the TC being at its normal spot in the bedroom. No luck, can do a restore to a few days back !!!
So now i installed Snow Leopard again with my old settings etc. Library is still in one big lump of photo's, about 4000 of them, still photos missing.
So the real question is..
Can i still restore to say Feb 15th. I did back up manually before I re-installed Snow Leopard. I have the TC backing up a few times a day....
Can someone help me? No Mac users in my area so I have to ask some people who really know.
Cant drag my computer to the Apple store into Town as my 2 year old is not going to be very helpful...
Thanks a lot.
Isabel

Hi again:
I am afraid I am not much help.  I do not have a Time Capsule, so I just dug the article out and hoped it would help you.  I am also not a networking guru.
The Time Capsule should connect via wi-fi (your Airport device.  I would turn the Time Capsule and Airport device off, turn the Airport device on, and then the Time Capsule.  Theoretically, the connection should be automatic.
Once you get the Time Capsule connected, you should be able to recover the pictures.  Your iPhoto library is located in your home folder ~pictures.
The article should apply to OS X 10.6 as well as OS X 10.7.

P.S.  I visited Sydney once as a tourist.  The harbor (harbour) is beautiful.  Nice city and nice people.

  • Macbook 13" 2009 shutting down when moved randomly and when finally able to turn back on time and date needs to be reset.. Help?

2 times in the last week when i have picked up my macbook to place beside me it has shut down, and takes a little while to turn back on, when it does turn on again the date and time needs to be reset and wifi password  needs to be re-entered as well..
I have no idea what is going on but i dont like it... any help would be great !!

That battery is relatively healthy, say relatively due to the high cycle count, the number of full charge cycles it has had.  The lower capacity simply reflects the high number of charge cycles and is not an issue, only a measure of how long the MacBook will work when running on battery power.  The voltage is right where it should be for a MacBook, in the range of 11.5 to 12.5 volts...12.3 volts is a strong battery.
Now to the auto-shutdown for lack of a better term - that sounds a lot like something loose inside the MacBook that when jarred shorts/shutsdown the sytem with a loss of basic information.  You could try things like an SMC reseet or PRAM reset but I seriously doubt they would have any affect.  Best option would be a visit to an Apple store genius bar to have the techs run some diagnostics to see if they can identify something going wrong inside.
Hope this helps and you can find resolution...auto shutdowns of this type are not really good for the system.

  • My MacBook Pro 13" won't turn on 90% of the time I try to get it running, and when it does turn on, even on a charger, it shuts down if I stop using it for 2  seconds and it won't turn back on. Should I replace the battery?

My MacBook Pro 13" won't turn on 90% of the time I try to get it running, and when it does turn on, even on a charger, it shuts down if I stop using it for 2+ seconds and it won't turn back on. Should I replace the battery?  It doesn't hold a charge either...

    EmadJamal,
the battery won’t melt because of long connection to the AC charger, although that has the potential of reducing the battery’s life.
Do you have access to a second 60 W AC charger to test with your MacBook Pro, or access to a second 13-inch MacBook Pro against which your AC charger could be tested?

Is this normal? Should I be worried? Is my GPU defective?

It could have powered off. Try holding the sleep button down for a few seconds until the apple logo appears to restart it

  • My Macbook Pro ran out of battery last night and wouldn't turn back on even when connected to power for a period of time. However, when I woke up, it did turn on. Is there a reason this happened and should I get it looked at?

Last night, I was watching something on my Macbook Pro and it died (out of battery). I went to plug it in and waited a couple of minutes to try and start it back up. However, when I connected the power source the light was green, which could not have been the case since I know 100% it was out of battery. I proceeded to hold the start button for a long period of time, but my computer made no noise and refused to turn on - it looked like for all intensive purposes it was dead. I left it alone overnight praying that it would be alright in the morning and luckily, when I opened the computer this morning it was restarted and fine. I'm concerned because I've had this happen to me a couple of times and while it always turns back on, I feel like there is a bigger issue that I need to get addressed. Can anyone help me with this? Any ideas? Thank you!

    "Portables with built-in batteries"
Current Apple portable computer batteries are pre-calibrated and do not require the calibration procedure outlined in this article. These computers use batteries that should be replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Apple recommend calibrating the battery when you buy a new Macbook and then every few months, or monthly if it used on mains all the time. This, as Apple says is to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. When the battery discharges and shuts the macbook down, it still has reserve power for a good number of hours. There is also a logic board battery to hold various settings.
I rather think I will take Apples advice on using their equipment not yours, but I would be intrigued to discover what is it you know that Apple doesnt about its batteries?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    Then repair the backup/TM drive.

Seems like there is some physical damage causing an intermittent issue of the iPhone being unable to power on.
    You could try a reset:
    - hold the home button and sleep/wake button down at the same time
    - the iphone will turn off(keep holding) then when the Apple logo appears release both buttons
If the reset fails I would suggest next time it powers on to try and back it up to either iTunes/iCloud then you can try a restore to factory settings or just back up and book an appointment at an Apple Store to have the iPhone evaluated.
    All the best

My iPhone4s turned itself off and will not turn back on unless it is charged at all times. I need help and answers please.

And we would need more info. "will not turn back on unless it is charged at all times." is pretty obvious: the phone will obviously not turn on unless it is charged.
    Describe your problem clearly.

Thanks - let it finish, but zero out data is unnecessary. That option is intended to thoroughly erase previously recorded data so that it cannot be recovered without sophisticated data recovery techniques.
Case sensitive is OK but I suggest you simply select Mac OS X Extended since "case sensitive" may complicate things for you in the future, should it be necessary to restore files to a case-ignorant volume.
Once it finishes, make sure it appears as a selectable option in Time Machine. If it does your problems are solved, but consider using Disk Utility and reformatting it. This time don't worry about zeroing unused space, and select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). It will only take a few seconds this time.
For a more thorough description read Apple Support Communites contributor Pondini's FAQ: http://pondini.org/TM/5.html Read the pink box regarding the subject of case sensitivity.

  • HT4623 just updated my iPhone 4s to ios6, now my phone won't turn back on. The apple logo comes on and sits then shuts off. I have held down the home button and on/off switch several times to reset, but same problem persists.

just updated my iPhone 4s to ios6, now my phone won't turn back on. The apple logo comes on and sits then shuts off. Then comes back on and just sits.I have held down the home button and on/off switch several times to reset, but same problem persists.

Place iPhone on Wall Charger for at least 10 minutes. Then keep on charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start, this can take about 20 seconds of holding both buttons while on charger. If still problem, open iTunes 10.7 on computer, connect iPhone to computer with USB Cable, hold both home and power buttons for about 20 seconds until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, then click Restore button of iTunes. If still problem, try DFU Mode Restore, here are the steps. Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power buttons, after exactly 10 seconds release the Power Button, keep holding the Home button until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds time. If the iPhone screen is black, blank this is DFU Mode. Click the Restore button of iTunes. DFU Mode can be difficult to enter sometimes, just keep trying. DFU Mode is a black, blank screen with iTunes saying Recovery Mode. If still problem and there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

  • HT3728 Time Capsule turned "off" and won't turn back "on"

My Time Capsule shut down last night--completely turned off--and won't turn back on. It felt warm, so I unplugged it overnight. I tried plugging it back in this morning and it still doesn't have power. I've also tried plugging it in somewhere else, and the hard reset as described on the Apple Support Website. But still no power. The green/amber light doesn't come on at all. Suggestions?

the power supply is cooked in its own internal oven bag..
It sounds like it is beyond warranty but if you have applecare on a Mac that will also cover the TC if it was purchased within 2years of the computer..
Otherwise a self - repair is possible or help from a repairer if you happen to live in an area.. to Apple it is a sealed unit and they will not help you.
