Tutorial for Java as a language for Portal development!

Hi All,
I am basically a Java, J2EE developer. Now my Employers want me to start working on SAP EP 6.0 SP9. The SAP world is completely new to me.
So
Plz, guide me and provide reference for some good Tutorials or books for Java coding in SAP EP.
Thanx in advance.
Manish

Hi Manish,
start here http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/19/4554426dd13555e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm and work through the material.
The books offered by SAPPress for EP development are not recommandable.
SP9 should be upgraded, it's really horrible old and buggy.
Hope it helps
Detlev
PS: Wrong forum, you should have asked within EP Dev.

  • Is there a security fix for Java 6 Update 34 for OS X 10.5.8?

Firefox is warning me my Java plug in is still a security risk, despite having the latest update for my system. Apple do not seem to have fixed Java 6 Update 34 for 10.5.8 users, only Java 6 Update 35, which is only for OS X 10.7 and higher.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated, as I need Java for online tax returns!
    Thanks, in advance?

P.S. Why are Apple ignoring their 10.5.8 customers? Not all of us can afford to replace our Macs with the latest models. Some of Apple's recent sharp practices regarding customer service and loyalty, are reminiscent of Microsoft's when it had an almost total monopoly on the PC software market.

    Dear Rolf-Martin,
I have problem w/ sapgui java  that puzzled me all along ...
I've downloaded SAPGUI Java 700r2.1 .. then successfully installed in my PPC ibook G4 ... up and running well ...
one day my colleague with a new MacBook (Intel Core Duo 2GHz) want to have SAPGUI ...
i installed it, run the apps, it works well to the point of SAPLOGON window ...
But it cannot connect to any server defined ...
When I create a new connection, it correctly connected to server and group list can be chosen, but still when I click it to connect nothing happened as if the program not running.
Java -version is 1.5.0_07 .. software update checked, no issue with Java or else ...
I've also try to change the JDK to 1.4.2 to no avail.
I'm stuck. system already re-installed. install sapgui from fresh but problem still persist.
No clue from Googling ... no clue from sapnotes ...
Would you please point me to something so I can dig in ?

  • Is Java a suitable language for raising our robot child?

My wife and I received the devastating news that we can't have children. It's all the years I coded in the
nude, bathed in the radiation of the good old CRT. Anyway, the idea occurred to me that I could
try to build a robot and raise it like as our son. I think I'll be able to sink a PDA into its little styrofoam head,
so I'm going to have to use J2ME -- alas, our son is never going to be a rocket scientist, or render a
Swing GUI.. Anyway, my question: does anyone have any sample code? Hurry, it's urgent!

  • Looking for patch for Java RTS 2.1 for Solaris 10 u7

    Hello,
I am looking for the patch that allows me to run Java RTS 2.1 (2.2 as well) on Solaris u7. I see that 2.1 is supported on u4 and u5 and 2.2 is supported on u5 and u6. I am currently using u7.
    Thanks!
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
You don't need any patches to run JRTS 2.1 or 2.2 on Solaris 10u7. I think the latest 2.2 early access supports update 7 "out of the box" (if not 2.2 GA will). For earlier releases all you need to do it tell the cyclic driver package installation to ignore the difference in the Solaris version - it will warn you that the versions don't match and ask you if you want to continue anyway.
If that's not the case please report what errors you are seeing.
    Thanks,
    David Holmes

  • Simple for Java guys but not for me,,,

I intend to build an application that will serve as a front end to connect to backend database records. Ideally it will have a UI similar to SQL query tools like TOAD, SQL developer but will be more user friendly so as to avoid making user put complete queries. I have a tomcat server for my work. Please suggest the best way to create such application for a beginner
I guess it will be JSP but need expert opinions

There is no way at all, let alone a 'best way', for a beginner to create such an application.
Why - that is the first question I would ask. There are already good tools that are free such as sql developer. So why do you think another tool is needed. And why do you think you could do a better job than those well-funded efforts have been able to do?
And why do you think your project won't end up in the trashpile of history like so man other misguided ventures?
Just enter 'sourceforge sql developer' into your favorite search engine and you will get over a half million results and the 'hot' ones on the first page are mostly projects that have been abandoned for many years now.
Any project you embark on, unless it is for your personal enrichment, should fulfill some need that other offerings don't fulfill.
The first step for any serious application project is to create a business plan and a marketing plan that shows the market for such a product and how you plan to achieve a return on investment.
The next step would be to create a requirements document that outlines what functionality the application needs. One part of that would be what databases you want to support: Oracle, DB2, sql server, etc.
You are a long way from needing to know how to actually write such an application until you are near completion with the specs.

  • Best practice for Web Dynpro for Java to connect to SAP HR

What is best way to connect Web Dynpro for Java application deployed in SAP portal to connect to SAP HR ?
Is it good practice to connect to underlying SAP database ( eg oracle) directly to get the data or is there a better way ?
This below article describes to connect to external DB, however Is there any other way for  SAP HR ?
    http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/WDJava/WebDynproApplciationwithDatabaseMS+Access

    Hi,
There are 2 supported ways :
First is  to use JCO connections to call abap RFC enabled function modules. (BAPIs for example)
Second is to call SOAP web services (HR enterprise services for example)
You should never access directly database tables...

  • Oracle To End Support for Java 7

No More Free Updates for Java 7 after April 2015
Users must sign long-term support deals or migrate to Java 8 to avoid 'enormous headache and disruption to millions of applications'
Public updates for Java 7 -- including bug and security fixes -- will end this month, a situation that one security advocate says could impact millions of applications.
"As outlined in the Oracle JDK [Java Development Kit] Support Roadmap, after April 2015, Oracle will not post further updates of Java SE [Standard Edition] 7 to its public download sites," Oracle's Java SE Support Roadmap states. "Customers who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 7 or older versions can get long-term support through Oracle Java SE Support. The process of migrating users from Java 7 to Java 8 through the auto update feature is expected to take place after the January 2015 CPU release."
[ The art of programming is changing rapidly. We help you navigate what's hot in programming and what's going cold and give insights into the technologies that are changing how developers work. | Keep up with hot topics in app dev with InfoWorld's Application Development newsletter. ]
Oracle released Java SE 7 in July 2011; Java SE 8 was released in March 2014. Java, particularly on the client side, has been beset by security issues in recent years. But Oracle has taken many steps to address the issues and stressed that most of the problems dated back several years, before Oracle took over Java from Sun in 2010.
Still, the impact of Oracle's cessation of public updates could be severe, an official at security firm Waratek, believes. Oracle's "rapid" end-of-life schedule for Java versions is great for innovation and language evolution, Waratek CTO John Matthew Holt said in an emailed statement. "However, there is a dangerous tradeoff; now millions of Java 7 applications will have to defend themselves against code-level vulnerabilities without the benefit of future fixes." Holt advocates either upgrades to Java 8 or use of Java Run-time Application Self Protection (RASP) technologies (Waratek is a RASP vendor).
This week's security update from Oracle, meanwhile, marks the "proverbial 'end of the road' for Java 7 application security, Holt said. "After today, the only version of the Java Platform which will receive public security updates is Java 8.  This is huge news, and it is going to cause enormous headache and disruption to millions of application owners around the world."
Contacted Tuesday afternoon for a comment on the end of public updates for Java SE 7, by late evening Oracle had not yet responded.
The April 2015 Critical Patch Update released Tuesday by Oracle provides 98 new fixes for security issues across a wide range of product families, said Eric Maurice in an Oracle blog post. These range from Oracle Database to Oracle Fusion Middleware, Java SE, and MySQL. Fourteen of the security fixes are for Java SE.

Java 7 has already been dead for quite a while. While you could still use it for Java apps on your system, Apple blocked its use in browsers long ago. You have to install version 8 if you need Java support for the web.
