Two for one networks

Just purchased and installed a Linksys E1550 wireless N Router. Followed all directions and it was fairly easy.
However, I have one big issue/concern. When all was said and done I had two access points with the same name - one with security protection and one with the word guest (unsecured) after its name.
What did I do wrong and more importantly, how do I get rid of the unsecured network?
iMAC system.
Thanks.

Yes, the factory default user name is blank (no user name needed), and the default password is "admin".
The password can be changed in the GUI, but if you forget it, the only way to change it back to the factory default "admin" is to do a factory "reset", using the router's recessed "reset" switch.  That might be the case now, if you used the above user and password, that the password may have gotten changed somehow, so you might need to reset the router to get it back to "admin".  The thing to notice is that if you do the "reset" button thing, you'll have to reconfigure your router, since ALL the settings go back to their factory defaults.  So it really is kind of a last resort.

  • Two Timecapsules, one network

    Hi,
I have problems with the setup of my network.
I have a (coax) modem with good internet signal. I don't use the  wifi function on that modem.
I want to use two time capsules to extend the wifi signal, but it must be one network.
The two time capsules are connected by wire. ( 20 meters between them )
Can someone help me and give me the settings of the time capsules or give me a link where i can find this?
    Thx!!!

If you want to reconfigure your Cisco modem/router to function only as a simple bridge mode modem, then that is a completely separate operation that will need to be done before you can set up either of the Time Capsules.  Turning off the wireless on the Cisco modem/router will not make it a modem......it will still be a wired router if you only turn off the wireless function of the device.
Whether or not it is possible to setup the Cisco as a pure modem might be a question for your ISP or Cisco support. Some modem/routers or gateways can be setup to operate as a simple modem and some cannot. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the Cisco product that you have, so I cannot offer advice on that product.
Assuming that the Cisco modem/router can be setup to operate only as a modem.....not a router......TC1 must reset back to factory default settings and set up again to function as the main router for the network. You can use the same network name that you are using now if you wish when you reconfigure the TC again, or use a different network name.
Once TC1 has been set up and is working correctly, then TC 2 will be set up to extend the network using Ethernet.
So, in summary, you really have 3 separate operations that need to be done to accomplish your goal.
    1) Reconfigure the Cisco modem/router to function only as a simple modem
    2) Reconfigure TC1 to act as the main router for the network
    3) Reconfigure TC2 to extend the signal using Ethernet from TC1
We can help with 2) and 3), but I am not familiar with the Cisco modem/router that you have, so I cannot provide help on that operation, which must be done first before the TCs can be reconfigured. If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) supplied the Cisco modem/router to you, then I would suggest that you go to them first to ask them if it is possible to setup the Cisco only as a modem.....and.....whether or not they will support that type of configuration.
Please post back when you are ready to reconfigure TC1 and TC2.

  • Proxy for one network

My school have just created a new WiFi network for students, but this involves a proxy server.  I can get the proxy server to work so that I can use the internet at school, but each time I change WiFi at the moment, I have to go into "Advanced Network Preferences" and then untick the box the proxy box, so that the details aren't used.
Is there a way I can assign the proxy to just one network?
    Thanks.

    Create a new "Location"
System Preferences -> Network -> Location -> Edit Locations... -> Gear at bottom -> Duplicate "Automatic"
Give it a unique name (eg. "AtSchool")
Now for the new location give it a Proxy setting.
Now that you have 2 locations, you can use
Apple menu -> Location -> Automatic
Apple menu -> Location -> AtSchool
to easily switch between with proxy and without proxy.
You can then get utilities such as MarcoPolo or LocationX that can automatically detect your current location when you wake from sleep and switch your location.

  • Two routers, one network?

Since I'm kind of network-challenged, I hope this is not too basic.
I have a land-line with DSL connected to a Westell 327W router providing wireless service to two computers in my home office. I would like to place a computer in an outbuilding but it's too far away for wireless. The outbuilding has the same landline connection, and I have a 2nd 327W that I could use. But the 2nd 327W conflicts somehow with the first.
I've searched Google for answers but usually the answers are too technical for my feeble brain? Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks in advance,
    AmusewareMan

If they are too far apart, the only thing that i can think of one of 3 things
    in order of technical difficulty:
    1. Get another DSL account (maybe just another modem ?)
    2. Get a Wifi repeater
    3. Learn about using the existing telephone jacks in your house in a home network... it is very possible but may cost a bunch
... and by the way, i like turtles

  • Does apple know they offer two for one?

i was at the Apple store to buy some USB cables.  i decided to use the apple store app to complete my purchase.  i pay for the cables and tell the person i bought them using the apple store app.  she says take care and i go home.  a little while later i get an email from apple saying my order is being processed and should be delivered by the 15th.    i figured out what i did.  instead of selecting the Pick up in Store option in the app i left it at Ship to Me.  i called apple support and after two very confused CSR agents i finally got one that understood what was happening.  we got things settled but what i am asking is if this is a known bug with the apple store app?  can we really go into the store, buy something with the apple store app and tell the sales person we paid using the app and then have a second one for free?
    delivered?  for free?
    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

Agreed, but the app is not that smart. The process when followed by employees is, the pick ticket and receipt should have been generated by that employee
so again their mistake, not yours. Let's hope it does not happen often.

  • Using 2 AP's for One Network

    Hi,
I have an AP Extreme and an older Graphite, both wired using ethernet, that I'd like to use to create one wireless network. I live in a log home that one won't begin to cover. Any info on if this is possible and how to set it up would
    be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Carl

if you can try ethernet connect of older router to newer. Place older in bridge mode and to either join or create its own wireless network.

  • Two Airports, One Network

Is it possible to have two Airport Extreme base stations, connected to separate cable modems, broadcast the same Airport network?

If the two base stations connect to different cable modems, they must broadcast different wireless networks and (if they are in close proximity) should be configured with different channels at least five channels apart.
Don't think that by having them broadcast the same Airport network that you can get potentially twice the internet bandwidth - it doesn't work that way. Likely all you will succeed in doing is creating a lot of problems with getting either wireless network to function properly.

  • Two for one.....malware?

I notice that when I'm sending a single email, the blue progress bar in the "Mail Activity" area often shows the following words "Outgoing mail *+2 of 2+*." This happens when I'm sure there is only one recipient and no attachment.
Does this indicate I'm sending out some additional document? Malware or something?

    Greetings,
There are no viruses for Mac OS X, so you're not sending that. Unless you see something additional in the Sent mailbox, nothing has been sent out. You're using IMAP mail, so Mail and your email provider's server are in constant communication to keep in synch, which is why you see more than one item being sent. It's really only the synching process.

  • Oracle RAC and crossover cable for private network

    Hi,
I have the following configuration: two database servers, each has four network cards, two for public network and two for private, cluster network. Each public card has own IP-address and both have virtual IP-address, defined in operation system (SLES-9) for redundancy. Because I have only two machines in the cluster I want to connect the two machines for private with crossover cable without switch. For redundancy I want to make two connections between machines. Is it at all possible? How should I defined all network interfaces and what should be included in /etc/hosts for properly work of Oracle cluster?
    Best Regards,
    Jacek

    Hi,
You can build a RAC witch CROSSOVER, but the Oracle no homolog.
As you have 4 cards, 2 to public (redundancy) and 2 to interconnect (redundancy) you need of a software to to make a TEAM, and create a card virtual that will have a IP address.

  • Can I (or How can I) chain two Time Capsules on one network for two Macs?

Currently we have one dual-band TC connected to our cable modem. Mac 1 backs up to it. I also have an original TC (one-band) that I would set to 5GHz dedicated for Mac 2.
Would this plan work and provide Backup and Internet to both machines?
    Cable Modem --->TC1--->TC2
Mac 1 would connect to TC1 for Time Machine function and Internet Access.
Mac 2 would connect to TC2 for Time Machine function and Internet Access.
    (---> = Ethernet cable)

No changes needed on TC1, but you may need to use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup to note a few of the settings on TC1, such as the exact type of security that it is using now since that information will be used to configure TC2.
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on TC1 to the WAN port (circle icon) on TC2*. Open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup and TC2 should appear. If not, you'll need to "hard reset" TC2 by holding in the reset button until the amber light begins to blink more quickly, hold another few seconds when you see this and then release
Click the Time Capsule tab below the icons to name your device, assign a device password and set Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as TC1 network**
No check mark needed next to Allow this network to be extended unless you plan to add more wireless device to extend the network
    Radio Mode = 802.11n only 5 GHz
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as TC1
Wireless Password = Same password as TC1
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and let TC2 restart. Then power down the entire network. Power up the modem first, then TC1, then TC2, then each device one at a time. Allow a moment or two for each device to fully power up before you start the next.
*When the TC is in Bridge Mode, it really makes no difference which port you use to connect, as they all behave the same. I use the WAN port as a habit for connections like this so that I know at a glance where the connection is coming from. But, you could connect to one of the LAN ports on TC2 if you prefer.
**Assign a different name than TC1 if you want to log on separately to the network that TC2 provides
Be sure to setup Mac2 to backup to TC2 for Time Machine and you should be all set.

  • I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either.

I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either. I have an iphone 4 that will not connect to 5ghz.
    thank you!

Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.
This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it
Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart
Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name.  2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name.

  • Airport Express network suddenly no longer visible -for one Mac..but wait

    Hi everyone
Setup isDSL modem>ethernet>"downstairs" AX...."upstairs" AX connects fine to it as a WDS remote station with 128-bit hex password....
The two ibooks, one G3 one G4 connect fine, and so did the PowerMac g4 desktop that was formerly the software base station (range was too short, so got the AX's). The desktop suddenly stopped seeing the network. Then, it came back on, for about an hour and the internet connect infor showed it being connected for the 60 hours elapsed since that seeming disappearance. Then it went away... 60 hours later, up it popped again, again for an hour, and I downloaded pics from AOL, browsed etc. Come back to find it gone again and has not returned.
Problem is either software/configuration based or intermittent hardware -- how can I find out without replacing the part? (The solution to the very similar problem posted a few days ago had to do with a channel switch... my WDS system base stations are on channel 6 (their choice, I guess).. does not seem to apply.
Does anyone think the Security Update 2006-005 would help, and how would I get it to my non networked desktop?
    Thanks for help!

Well, from reading some other posts, and trying my own experimenting, I have gotten it to work.
Deleting the keychain did nothing, manually connecting to the network by typing the name in etc.. nothing.
What DID work was using my G3 iBook (which could see the network) to use the Airport Administrator to change the channel from Automatic to manual - in this case channel 7 (a completely arbitrary choice).
The thing I cannot work out is why it had this issue in the first place. It worked fine for months then one day decided that it apparently didn't like automatic channel selection.
The problem is solved but the cause is still a mystery.
Hopefully though, this might help others with the same problem.

  • Two Macs, one is on the wireless network, one isnt.

To make a long story short, i have a mac pro, and a mac book pro. The router im using is a airport express. The mac book pro works no problem, and i just installed the wireless card in the mac pro, and it doenst see the router. The computer reconizes the hardware, but no internet connection. These two computers arent networked or anything. I just bought the card, slapped it in, and expected it to work like all apple stuff does. Im shure this is a redundent question, but i could not find the information i was looking for by searching.
    Thanks!

OK. Could be you have to buy an external antenna option from places like
QuickerTek and others to expand the otherwise weak wi-fi range in the Pro
tower; since there are options for sale by vendors and direct online.
The wi-fi and bluetooth are said to be options in the Mac Pro; too bad the
Apple option does not include a port (then) if one is lacking to facilitate this
need to connect from the tower wirelessly to an internet access point this
wireless card and defective antenna location inconveniently provide a user.
The old option of running ethernet to the base station may be the best bet,
even if it will make that Pro slower to access data on a network than the
specfication speeds they suggest wireless transfers can run. Funny, some
one in these forums posted an image of the antenna on the back of a tower
when the question of wireless problems and the Mac Pro first came up.
I'd almost suggest it was you; but it seems like that's alot of trouble for
    an arguement.
