Two instances of iTunes application pointing to same library..??

I run a 2 disk system (OS & Apps on Disk 1, Data on Disk 2) - and have always had my iTunes library on Disk 2, with the media folder location ("edit" -> "preferences" -> "advanced") set to "D:\Personal Data\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music", which seems to add the library information into the directory immediately above the media folder (e.g. "D:\Personal Data\My Music\iTunes\").
I have issues with my current XP build (crashing, etc.), and have started to build a 2nd instance of XP on a newly created partition on Disk 1, next to the original instance of XP.
My question is - if I install iTunes as an application on my new instance of XP (ensurng that it's the same version), and change the media folder location to point to the existing location (both instances of XP 'see' the Data disk as the "D:" drive...), will this corrupt the existing library or media? Or can I happily boot into either instance of XP, and each inidividual instance of iTunes 'sees' the same library o.k....??
Thanks,

Hi - thanks for taking the time to reply.
As far as I am aware, the folder "above" the location that I configured the media files location to be (my case "D:\Personal Data\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music"), contains the database files - in my case, in "D:\Personal Data\My Music\iTunes\" I have:
- (Folder) Album Artwork
- (Folder) iTunes Music
- (Folder) Previous iTunes Libraries
- iTunes Library Extras.itdb **
- iTunes Library Genius.itdb
- iTunes Library.itl **
- iTunes Music Library.xml **
- sentinel (?????!!!) **
- Temp File
"**" - means that the "last modified" date/time on these was the last time I ran up iTunes application from my (original) XP installation, so these must be the database files as are being used by the application....
I only run one user per XP installation, so no multiple users 'concurrently' sharing one db and music library - and of course, I can only boot into one or other instance of XP as they are on the same partition/machine, so I can be sure that only one instance of iTunes will be accessing the db/music at one time....
I know that sometimes, other applications keep configuration settings and other bits 'hidden' away somewhere in their own application folders, or in application folders hidden somewhere under the OS file system - which in both cases for me are relative to the instance of XP selected at boot time, and I would (if this were the case) have different settings for each iTunes application instance, being in different partitions on my "system" disk. I guess the crux of my question is:
Is all data associated with the database (and management of it), and also all the media (music/artwork/etc.) files, ALL kept under [in my case] "D:\Personal Data\My Music\iTunes\", and so each discrete instance of iTunes, when pointed to this location, accepts the current status of the db (as all required info. is there), and can manage the db (e.g. add/remove things) - and that any changes are simply reflected and seen when booting into the other XP instance, and running iTunes under there..??
I believe (from what I've seen and heard so far) that this is the case (e.g. all required data held in one location, in my case, somewhere on the "D:-Drive") - but the only alarm bell is that you don't seem to configure in iTunes the location of the DB, and it then builds sub-directories with the media in it - it seems that you define where the media goes, and iTunes works back up one level in the directory structure, to install the db files there... just seems a strange way of configuring something (e.g. what happens if you tell it that the media is in the root of a discrete drive - where does it put the DB then, as you can't go back up one level from the root...!!),
Sorry for the long post, but trying to cover everything....
thx.

  • Two Instances of Itunes on One PC?

    All,
I recently bought a new PC, and I would like to download my old backed up Itunes library to it, along with my girl-friends library (which was on a separate computer). Is this possible?
1- I have not yet downloaded Itunes to the new PC
2- I have downloaded both libraries to their respective "My Documents" directories.
    Many thanks for your help!
    - CDW

You don't need two instances of iTunes application.
You can have as many iTunes libraries as you want.
Create separate computer logins for each user.
When each user logs onto the computer with their own account and open iTunes, their own library will open.
The library consists of the \Music\iTunes\ folder and all contents.

  • Two Instances of Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.x using the same DB

I can't seem to find any documentation about installing two instances of Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.x using the same database.
Would the two instances conflict? Should I create a separate database for each instance? I am attempting to cluster two application servers and I want to know if I will need multiple databases, I can't see a reason why this would be a problem.
Any advice on this matter would be appreciated.

You have probably downloaded the wrong version.
Do not download the Oracle SOA Suite 10g (10.1.3.5.1) for WebLogic Server (10.3.1),
but the one below that option: Oracle SOA Suite 10g (10.1.3.x)
See if you get something like the following zip file: soa_windows_x86_101310_disk1.zip
This is just the OC4J without the WebLogic Server.

  • Can not get two instances to join same cluster even on same machine

On a RedHat Linux box, I have failed to get two instances of coherence to join the same cluster. I have managed to get the muticast test tool to show that packets are being sent and received. To do this, I had to:
    java -cp bin/tangasol.jar -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true com.tangosol.net.MulticastTest
    Wed Apr 15 21:02:45 WET 2009: Sent packet 1.

  • Using 2 iTunes applications on same computer

Can I use a United States iTunes application and another country's iTunes application on the same computer?
    Bruce Butler

toonz, thanks for your help. I found the language preference in iTunes Help, but it was in the Windows iTunes General preferences and I have a Mac.
The country menu at the bottom of my Mac iTunes doesn't list any South American countries. Can you believe it? We found the Latin America iTunes store and were ready to download it, but I'm afraid that it will conflict with my U.S. version of iTunes. That's why I asked the original question.

  • HT1364 I used these instructions to move my i-tunes library to the external hard drive that two different home pc's access. My playlists do not show on both Is it possible to have one i-pod synch amid two different computers that use the same library?

I have a sole i-pod and two pc's, used the instructions for "iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder" in the hope that I could synch my one i-pod between two different computers that are sharing the same library. Is it possible to have two seperate computers that only share an external hard drive (one wireless, one not) ? When I am looking at a shared library should it appear the same on both machines (ie: playlists/ purchased list etc)?

If it is moved correctly, playlists will display on both computers and it should be possible.
    Close iTunes.
    Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.
When prompted to create a new or open an existing iTunes library point iTunes to the iTunesLibrary.itl file on the external drive.
The entire library should now show up with all playlists and playcounts.
    Do this on both computers.
Keep in mind that only one computer can access iTunes at a time, otherwise errors will occur when each computer attempts to write to or update the iTunesLibrary.itl file.
Syncing may work seemlessly with both computers, but honestly syncing is designed to work with one and only one computer.

  • Two copies of iTunes on one computer?

A pretty stupid problem, but I can't figure it out. It appears that there are two copies of iTunes on one of our computers--or at least, iTunes somehow displaying two different profiles. If I have "start iTunes automatically" checked, when I connect the iPod, iTunes opens, and it shows the location of the Library file as on the workstation's local HD. Conversely, if I use the shortcut icon on the desktop to open iTunes, it points to a Library location on a network shared drive (which is where I want it to be).
I cannot for the life of me figure out where the two copies, if they exist, of the iTunes.exe file are located. The Properties for the shortcut iTunes icon is grayed out in the "find Target" box. I can find one copy of iTunes in the local c:\Programs\iTunes folder. Control Panel Add/Remove Programs list shows only one iTunes program. Is there any way to figure this out?

I need to transition my 1st Generation Apple TV from an older instance of iTunes on my iBook to a new instance of iTunes on my new Mac... How do I get the 5 digit Network code to come back? Is there anyway for 1st Generation Apple TV to be synched to two instances of iTunes or do I have to choose one or the other? I appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks!

The 5 digit code is every time different. That does not matter. Just integrate every device into your network.
You can connect many computers to Apple TV but syncronisation works exactly with one computer. That's why I use "streaming". But you can sync one computer, then another, and so on. The content on your Apple TV is the content from your computer that has synced last. But you can not mix it.
The new Apple TV has no syncronisation. Everything is streamed,

  • Only letting one instance of my application run

    hi guys,
My application will allow the user to interact with the database. The database will be stored on a local machine, and not on a network, so that only one person can access it at a time.
The problem is, I believe a user can launch two instances of my application simultaneously, and therefore there are potential problems.
So I want the user to only ever be able to launch one instance of the JFrame through which all interactions to the DB are made.
    So MyApp.java contains
    class MyApp
    public void main (String[] args)
    MyFrame mF = new MyFrame();
}Now, is it the right idea of mine to make mF singleton? Or is it the wrong approach?
But what is confusing me is...if at the java prompt I type
    java MyApp
and then I type, once again
    java MyApp
will these two be treated as two completely different running of programs? Say I had mF as a singleton. Does this mean there can exist one instance of mF in each of my two different runnings of MyApp, or are the two somehow connected, which means that if I ran MyApp a second time theer'll be some sort of error cos mF already exists and cos it is a singleton, it can't exist twice?
Sorry if I havent made myself clear. I'm very confused myself.
    Thanks.
    AU

My application will allow the user to interact with
the database. The database will be stored on a local
machine, and not on a network, so that only one
person can access it at a time.If using jdbc then local or remote only really effect your database driver choice not your code.
The problem is, I believe a user can launch two
    instances of my application simultaneously,Yes.
and therefore there are potential problems. Potential but not that difficult to avoid.
So I want the user to only ever be able to launch one
instance of the JFrame through which all interactions
to the DB are made.If you think about responsibilities, then data integrity is not the responsibility of the UI, its the responsibility of the DBMS.
Now, is it the right idea of mine to make mF
singleton? Or is it the wrong approach?A Singleton will only ensure that a jre has a single instance. If you start multiple instances of the jre then there can be one instance of the application in each.
The best solution is to use your databases normal locking process through the JDBC api
The simplest solution is for your program to lock either the database, the table or the record you are interested in. You can do this by creating a lock record on a seperate table. If the insert fails to create the record, somebody else is already using the dataset. If it succeeds then is available. You will need a way to forcible clear the lock if your application stops unexpectedly.

  • ITunes starts up with empty library - library confirmed alright

    G'day all.
I've got a dual boot Leopard/Windows XP setup on my Mac, and both iTunes' read from the same library on my Mac HD, with the Windows partition utilising MacDrive to see the files. This has worked fine for about 2 years now, but just recently my Windows iTunes has started up with no files. Shift-ing at startup and reselecting the library does nothing to fix it.
The interesting part: booting into OS X and openeing iTunes shows that all the files are there! Any thoughts on why this has suddenly started to happen?
