Two wistnesses in a SQL Server fail over group

Is it possible to have two witnesses in a SQL Server Always on Availability Group Fail Over Cluster? Our goal is to have redundant witnesses in an Azure availability set.
Thanks,
Mike

AlwaysOn uses Windows Failover Clustering for quorum.  See, eg Understanding Quorum Configurations in a Failover Cluster
You can do this, but with Dynamic Quorum it's probably not helpful.  If you loose your witness vote, the cluster will adjust the quorum requirements.

  • Is my installation of SQL Server Fail Over cluster correct?

I made a 2 node SQL Server 2012 fail over cluster but having some problems during installation so I wanted to know if the steps below I performed are correct.
    Hardware
    Node1 192.168.1.10
    Node2 192.168.1.11
    Added following entries in DNS
    cluster.domain.local 192.168.1.12 (for Windows Cluster)
    msdtc.domain.local 192.168.1.13 (for MSDTC)
sql.domain.local 192.168.1.14 (for SQL Server Cluster)
    Cluster Storage
    Disk1 (for Quorum)
    Disk2 (for MSDTC
    Disk3 (for SQL Server)
Now comes the installation. I am performing all these steps as DOMAIN ADMIN.
    1. First I installed clustering role on both nodes
    2. Then I ran fail over validation wizard on Node1 adding both nodes which went fine (there were some warnings)
    3. Then I made a Windows Cluster on Node1 using these two nodes. I gave the name and IP to this cluster which I wrote above i.e. cluster.domain.local 192.168.1.12
    4. Cluster was created and boths nodes are UP.
Now I want to ask a question here. Is it best practice to perform the above operation using DOMAIN ADMIN? Or if I use a standard domain user account with local admin rights, will it work? If not then exactly what rights are required to perform this operation.
    5. Then I installed "Application Server" role on both Node1 and Node2 and also added "Distributed Transaction" feature
    6. Then I right clicked on Windows Cluster I created and added a new role/feature which is "DTC"
    7. I gave it the same name which I wrote above i.e. msdtc.domain.local 192.168.1.13
    8. MSDTC was created but when it tried to UP its service, it threw an error. Upon investigation it turns out the Windows Cluster cluster.domain.local doesn't have proper rights to created some objects in AD. I didn't know what rights to give so I gave it full
permission and after that when I created MSDTC again, the service went up fine.
So I want to know what rights does cluster.domain.com require to make MSDTC?
Am I doing good so far?

    Hello,
    >>Then I made a Windows Cluster on Node1 using these two nodes. I gave the name and IP to this cluster which I wrote above i.e. cluster.domain.local 192.168.1.10
Hello I suppose this IP was physical node IP windows cluster IP was 192.168.1.12  I suppose yo must have given this IP as windows cluster IP.10 and 11 are physical nodes in Cluster but 12 is Cluster IP .Correct me if I am wrong.
Did you do failover and failback to check whether cluster is configured correctly or not ,If not please do it .
    >>Then I ran fail over validation wizard on Node1 adding both nodes which went fine (there were some warnings)
Please remove warnings also ,it might cause issue. Not sure its correct every time but make sure cluster validation should be free of error and warning.
    >>Now I want to ask a question here. Is it best practice to perform the above operation using DOMAIN ADMIN?
You can do it with domain admin account as this is required to create Cluster NAme object(CNO) in domain and local account might not have that right so I would say its ok.
    >>I gave it the same name which I wrote above i.e. msdtc.domain.local
    192.168.1.11
again this IP is node 2 IP how can you give it to MSDTC.Use below link for reference

  • Issue while accessing a SQL Server table over OTG

    Hi,
I have been learning oracle for about 1.5 years and am just starting to learn some OTG pieces. I am wondering about an issue. The issue is:
"We need help with an issue we are having while accessing a SQL Server table over OTG. We are getting the following error message in Oracle :
ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
    [Oracle][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Unicode conversion failed {HY000}
The column it is failing on is "-----------" in the view --------------- in the SQL Server database pointed to by the Oracle DB Link ------------------- thats created in the Oracle instances ---- and -----.
This was working before, but is now failing, we suspect its due to new multi-byte data being added to the base table in the above column."
I took out the details and added ---- instead. I am wondering your guys thoughts on fixing this issue and helping me learn along the way. Thanks

    Hi Mike,
Thanks for the response, here are the details:
    1. What is the character set of the Oracle RDBMS being used. What is returned by -
    select * from nls_database_parameters;
    NLS_CHARACTERSET
    AL32UTF8
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET
    UTF8
We get SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_C1_AS and 1252 as Collation Property and Code Page
The datatype of the column in question in SQL Server is nvarchar(100).
    When I do a describe on the SQL Server view ( desc CK_DATA_FOR_OPL@------- ), I get the error below;
ERROR: object CK_DATA_FOR_OPL does not exist
Select * from CK_DATA_FOR_OPL@------ where rownum =1 does get me a row.
    create table tmp_tab as
    Select * from CK_DATA_FOR_OPL@----- where rownum =1;
desc tmp_tab shows the datatype of the said column in the table created in Oracle as NVARCHAR2(150).
Not sure why a column defined with size 100 in SQL Server should come across as 150 when seen over OTG. We see something similar in DB2 tables we access over OTG as well.

  • Is it possible to create a two node cluster with SQL server 2012 STD on node1 and SQL Server 2008 ENT on node2 on a Windows server 2012?

    Hi All,
Is it possible to create a two node cluster with SQL server 2012 STD on node1 and SQL Server 2008 ENT on node2 on a Windows server 2012?
    aa

I think you are confused with the way cluster is installed. Installing SQL on cluster is a two step process. On first node you create a new SQL cluster and on second node you need "AddNode" action.
Same edition media has to be used in above two operation.
you can install two separate instances with one enterprise and one standard.

  • SQL Server Browser service group does not exists. Check for earlier failures in the setup. during sql express 2008 R2 setup

    Hello,
I have an issue while installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. When I was installing SQL Server, I occurred an error message as shown in the figure.
I have followed couple of links as in
    this and
this links but it did not fix the issue. Can anyone help me on this issue?
    Regards
    Gaurav

    Hi gauravroondhe2306,
According to your description, you fail to install SQL Server 2008 R2 express with the error that SQL Server Browser service group does not exist. Please help to post SQL Server setup error log for analysis. By default, SQL Server setup summary and detail
    logs are located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
Based on my research, this issue could occur when you install SQL Server on a Domain Controller, or the machine's name has been changed and the browser service group is named with the original machine's name.
To troubleshoot the issue, you could follow the solutions below.
1.Use SQL Server 2008 R2 Best Practice Analyzer to detect if SQL Server is installed on a domain controller. If SQL Server is installed on a domain controller, please demote your machine from being a domain controller and install the SQL Server again since
it is not recommended to install SQL Server on a domain controller.
2.Check if the name of local user group matches the machine's current name. If it doesn't match, please change the name of the local user group accordingly, and install SQL Server again. For more information about the process, please refer to the article:

With just these generic error messages being present, this has been difficult to diagnose. Some research has yielded possible resolutions of the Event Viewer log being full, .NET corruption, missing registry entries, but none of those seem to be the issue
(Event Viewer logs cleared, Analysis services is working on the same physical servers in a different cluster, and the registry entries was only a supported issue for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bring up Configuration Manager, look at binary path for SSAS.  Make sure BOTH folders exist.  Sometimes with failovers mappings get screwed up.

  • Crystal Log in to SQL Server fails

I have 12 years of working with Crystal Reports and have never seen this error.  Version of Crystal is 2008 and the data is in SQL Server.  The database connection is OLEDB and the report is connecting to the database using the sa account.  The sa account has full rights to the database.
The report was written and was working great with no issues.
Recently it only works about 20% of the time.  The other 80% of the time this error occurs after entering the user sa login and password

just a thought but the database does not go offline ( for backup or any other reason) overnight

also if OLE and ODBC both stop I assume this is more of a SQl server issue than CR

  • ODBC connectivity to SQL-Server fails

Oracle 11.2.0.2 on Enterprise Linux Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 (Carthage).
Using FreeTDS unixODBC Driver to connect to a MS SQL-Server 2008 R2 SP1database. (RPM package freetds-0.64-1.el5.rf.x86_64 reported by yum whatprovides for ODBC FreeTDS .so).
ODBC isql connectivity works and SQL select Col1 from Schema.Table is successfully executed against DSN, and returns rows/data (not real names).
Same SQL in Oracle, select "Col1" from "Schema"."Table"@dblink fails (using the same ODBC DSN as isql test cor connectivity), via sqlplus.
    Debug trace (HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL=debug) reports:
Exiting hgopars, rc=28500 at 2013/06/19-14:12:08 with error ptr FILE:hgopars.c LINE:570 FUNCTION:hgopars() ID:SELECT list of size 0 is not valid
Have enabled/disabled numerous combinations of odbc.ini and init.ora parameters such QuotedId,  HS_FDS_SQLLEN_INTERPRETATION, HS_FDS_SUPPORT_STATISTICS and so on. Also tried using DBMS_HS_PASSTHROUGH, instead of native SQL via sqlplus. Same error, consistently.
Interestingly, the desc "Schema"."Table"@dblink call works fine in sqlplus - but according to the debug trace it lets the ODBC driver deal with it - it does not craft a SQL and pass this to the ODBC driver, according to the debug trace. Instead an ODBC interface call is used to describe the object.
So, ODBC driver seems  perfectly fine. Oracle can successfully use it as the desc command proved. Except that SQL statements (from Oracle) via the driver fails.
Any ideas as to what the problem can be?

    Yes, thanks Mike.
Ran into a brick wall troubleshooting, have developers and project managers doing what seems to be an ugly dance (think that is what they are doing with the up and down jumping movements).
With no responses to my posting here, and my dislike of bad dancing, went the SR route instead.
Appreciate you looking at the posting though. Makes me feel less alone in a world of bad dancers...

  • Shared Services Connection to SQL Server Failed

    Hi all
Am trying to configure an SQL Server 2005 user directory in Hyperion
Shared Services and have got to the screen where I need to type in
all of the database details (i.e. Type, Name, Server, Port, etc) and
a username/password but I keep getting the message:
Connection Failed. Not enough privileges to connect to the directory
    server...
I'm trying to connect to the "hypdb" database I've set up in SQL and
have tried the username "hypuser" which is set as the database owner
and another login which I've called "SysAdmin" and has system
    administrator priviliges.
Have also tried the system generated used ID "sa" but again no luck.
Am I missing a setting for these logins in SQL which is stopping
Shared Services being able to log in as them?
Also, for the "Name" box on this Shared Services window do I just
come up with my own unique name for the server or does it have to be
something that has already been defined?

    Hi,
The first things to know when you connect to MS SQL SERVER is the host or ip address and the port.
If these are correct when you click on RETRIEVE DATABASE, you are able to see all database on the server you specified.
So that means connection is ok, but of course user and password may be incorrect at this level.
If no database are retrieved, that means the host or/and port are not correct.
So before click on TEST, are you able to retrieve the database with RETRIEVE DATABASE button?
Are you able to ping the remote machine (SQL SERVER) with ip address or hostname?
Are you sure about the port for the SQL Server?
    Regards,
    Mireille

  • Convert SQL Server ROW_NUMBER() OVER(PARTITION BY() Query to Access

    Hi,
I am having trouble with converting this SQL Server query to Access. If anyone can give me help I would appreciate it.
    SELECT B.AMOUNT_REQUESTED, B.INIT_OFF, B.MBR_NBM, B.STATUS, B.APPLICATION_NBR
    FROM
    SELECT AMOUNT_REQUESTED, INIT_OFF, MBR_NBM, STATUS, APPLICATION_NBR, ROW_NUMBER() OVER(PARTITION BY MBR_NBM ORDER BY MBR_NBM) RN
    FROM LOAN_DATA
    WHERE APPLICATION_DATE BETWEEN '20150420' AND '20150425'
    ) B
    WHERE RN = 1
    ORDER BY B.MBR_NBM

While there is no equivalent to ROW_NUMBER(), it appears that you are just wanting the first row of each group, and that CAN be accomplished in Access, but I do wonder why you would WANT to do that in Access if your data is stored in SQL Server.  As
Tom indicated a Pass Through query object is likely your best bet -- or a View in SQL Server, then create a Linked Table object that points to it.
To get the first of each group ... which is essentially a TOP n, where n = 1 ... so .. the first thing you will want to indentify is a second field to use as a Key in order to define the "first" row you want in the group.  In your SQL
statement, you are ordering my mbr_nbm, so the secondary sort is unknown -- likely predicable, but unknown with out knowledge of the schema ... so, I will provide samples by using APPLICATION_DATE as the sort key.
This one is the "first" of a series with the assumption that the one you want is the one with the "biggest"/"most recent" APPLICATION_DATE.
    SELECT vLoanData.AMOUNT_REQUESTED, vLoanData.INIT_OFF, vLoanData.MBR_NBM, vLoanData.STATUS, vLoanData.APPLICATION_NBR
    FROM LOAN_DATA As vLoanData
    INNER JOIN
    (SELECT MBR_NBM, Max(APPLICATION_DATE) As LastAppDate
    FROM LOAN_DATA As vLast
    GROUP BY MBR_NBM) As vLastApp ON vLoanData.MBR_NBM = vLastApp.MBR_NBM And vLoadData.APPLICATION_DATE = vLastApp.LastAppDate
    Or ... the following is a TOP n query where n = 1.
    SELECT vLoanData.AMOUNT_REQUESTED, vLoanData.INIT_OFF, vLoanData.MBR_NBM, vLoanData.STATUS, vLoanData.APPLICATION_NBR
    FROM LOAN_DATA As vLoanData
    WHERE (vLoanData.MBR_NBM & '|' & vLoanData.APPLICATION_DATE)
    IN (SELECT TOP 1 (vCorrelated.MBR_NBM & '|' & vCorrelated.APPLICATION_DATE) As Key
    FROM LOAN_DATA As vCorrelated
    WHERE vCorrelated.MBR_NBM = vLoanData.MBR_NBM
    ORDER BY vCorrelated.MBR_NBM, vCorrelated.APPLICATION_DATE DESC)
This second example is not going to win you any points with respect to speed, but is truly a closer model to the TOP N type thing you are doing in SQL Server.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can I compare two databases from within SQL Server Management Studio

Hi everyone.  I haven't found anything online, so I wanted to ask here.  I have two SQL Server databases running on our server.  One is the production database, and another is my development database that I use when I'm working on the program.
I add tables and columns and stuff to my development database, and was wondering if anyone knew of an easy way to from within Management Studio or something to compare the two databases to make sure that they are the same and show me any differences.
I generally add tables or columns to both databases at the same time, but I worry that one time I might forget, so I would like to be able to run some sort of compare / check to make sure before releases...
Thanks everyone for your help.  I greatly appreciate it.

There is a command line utility that is with Microsoft SQL Management Studio called
    tablediff:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms162843%28v=sql.105%29.aspx
    An example:
    http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1073/sql-server-tablediff-command-line-utility/
And using it with multiple tables at once looks like some work but doable:

...and some custom code to implement in an answer at StackOverflow:
