Type an Administrator Name and Password to allow lpadmin to make changes.

We have a lab full of PowerPC G5 Towers running 10.5 off a PowerPC G5 tower running 10.5 Server. We are using Open Directory and AFP to allow students to login to Network Accounts from Local Workstations. After Archive and Installing two of the G5 Machines and updating them, We encountered the error "Type an Administrator Name and Password to allow lpadmin to make changes." and it freezes up and doesn't allow us to enter the password or username or even move the mouse.

To use the solution in the link above in this case, here's one way to go about things:
- Restart while holding down command and s at the same time to boot into single-user mode.
- Use the following commands to mount the filesystem (these are also listed on the screen when you start up):
$ /sbin/fsck -fy
$ /sbin/mount -uw /
- You're going to need the root password, so if you haven't already set one, type 'passwd', hit return, and set one.
- Load Directory Services:
$ launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
- Run the command mentioned in that other post, entering your root password when prompted:
$ dseditgroup -o edit -p -a admin -t group _lpadmin
- You may need to run it twice, because the first time it may say something about upgrading your groups or something like that.
I hope that helps. It worked for me on multiple machines affected by this problem.

Do you still have a Recovery partition? To see if you do, hold down the command and R keys whilst booting and erase your boot drive and then reinstall the version of OS X that you last paid for or downloaded.
Call back if that doesn't work...

  • Type an administrator's name and password to allow this

I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few days ago.
There is now some updates available for the computer on the Apple Store which I unfortunately can't download anything as a message saying an error has occurred keeps turning up, 3072.
I read stuff on this forum about closing the other accounts that may be using itunes...still nothing
It now asks me to type an administrator's name and password to allow this.
I realisez that my account was actually able to be used as an Administrator on the computer as it wasn't previously set up.
When I go to System Preferences to allow my account to administrate the computer, I actually need to unlock the lock on the bottom left in order to make some changes.
However it's asks an administrator's name and passwork in order to make some changes.
Seems like I am a stranger of my own Mac as I can't do anything.
Any suggestion please? as the computer has been running so slow for the past few days, I'm hoping after a software update everything will be back to normal.
    Many thanks

  • Type an administrator's name and password to allow Mac OS X to make changes

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and now I am constantly receiving the following error message. I have seen several similar posts, but none with this Kaychain/Application. Please Help!
"Type and administrator's name and password to allow Mac OS X to make changes.
Mas OS X wants to use the "System" keychain.
    Username:
    Password:
    Details: Keychain: System.Keychain
    Application:PubSubAgent

Thanks for your help. I tried that but it did not work, the error message still pops up and I am now having to reenter passwords in things like ICAL and Mail. I also tried the Keychain repair and it repaired something but did not fix the problem. Do you have any other ideas?

  • I'm trying to download an app that is not from the app store and it needs my administrations name and password

I need help, I want to download the app called 'popcorn time' from online. I know it has no side effects because my friend has used this app for a number of years on her mac computer. I found it on the internet and have nearly downloaded it but my security system won't let me I followed the instructions to get the security system to make an exception for this app but at the end of the instructions it has a log-in pop up that says  "OS X is trying to allow an item to always run. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this." I don't know what it means by an administrators name and password I typed my apple ID but this didn't work. I checked if i had the right password and i did and i have tried it multiple times but it still doesn't work this is very frustrating and I need to fix it

  • Why are my administrator name and password rejected now?

I tried to install some app upgrades (on my G4 PB) and was 'asked' to provide an administrator's name and password. My entries were rejected; I tried the only combinations I always use. No luck. I clicked on the hard disk icon, selected "get Info", and see that the owner is "system" and I can read only. Of course, trying to change the owner to me again requires the administrator's name and password so I am stymied again.
When my third attempt is rejected, I get a dialogue box telling me:
"You need to enter an administer name and password to access this item, but the finder cannot complete the process. The finder is unable to locate the item or the finder isn't allowed to use the item. Perhaps this is because the finder was copied or moved."
Along the way, I got a dialogue box with a password hint which confirms the password entry I have been using.... so it seems the problem is with the finder, not my entries?
I tried to repair permissions but that also wants name and password to allow disk utility to proceed. Catch 22!!!
Any ideas? (And, yes I did restart and go through the whole sorry process again.)

Somehow you have been removed as an administrator on your computer, which shouldn't happen. I would at least back up all your files to a separate hard drive before messing with this too much. I've heard of people forgetting the administrator password and then locking themselves out of their own computer.
Once you have your personal files backed up, then you can start trying to fix the problem, and if you can not, you can always reinstall the system and start from scratch and then move your files back on.
It's a good idea to have a separate administrator account for doing maintenance and software installations, and to use a separate account without administrator access for normal day-to-day usage for security reasons.

  • Forgot administrator name and password

I cannot remember the administrator name and password that I set up when first using macbook pro. How can I find these?

You must back up all data before continuing, unless you've already done so. If you need to back up but can't log in, ask for instructions.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead the instructions on this page:
If you forget the password and FileVault is on

  • Administrator name and password

I can't download any new software or make any changes on my computer because that requires an administrator name and password. Somehow, I am only a standard user on my computer and I am the only account on the computer (besides system administrator (root). I've used my install disc multiple times to change my password, but that doesn't work when I enter my user name and the new password when the computer asks for an administrator name and password. It just says password is invalid and administrator name and password is required. any warranty and technical support has expired and I'm at a loss at what to do. I really need to download new software and need to somehow recover the original administrator name and password and change my standard user account to an administrator account. I'd appreciate any help or advice!

    Hello,
    dell Windows XP
Your situation isn't clear. If you are asking about an Apple product you should change your profile to reflect this, and then start your own thread, providing more details. If you are running Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and have a question about a user account, go to this page:

  • What is an administrator name and password

I am trying to unlock the parental controls but it needs an administrator name and password. I dont know what that is.

Who set the admin and password?

  • Changing administrator name and password

I need to make several changes to my computer. However, I don't know/remember the administrator name and password to my computer and I am the administrator! It's been a long time since I set up my laptop (I bought it and set it up on 12/31/07). It's a black MacBook, OS 10.5 aka Leopard.
    What do I do?
I ask that you be as specific as possible when suggesting a solution.

I don't think you want to change the administrator name. It's also impossible to forget it. It's the name in Finder right under Places, assuming you are the administrator.
What you want to do is reset the admin password which you can to by using the Leopard DVD that came with your computer.
Boot into the DVD and hold down the "C" key with DVD inserted. After language screen, menu top left under Utilities you will find the proper item. Just follow the instructions.

  • If i want to install any software or update it is asking administrator name and password. what is administrator name

if i want to install any software or update it is asking administrator name and password. what is administrator name

When the computer was first set up you created an account and assigned a password to it. That first account is your admin account.
