Typing numbers instead of letters

Hi guysi bought my lappy 06 and not long after purchase i encountered this problem however it corrected itself. I checked the numlock thats not on and so here iam posting again to see if anyone can help me with this prob again

BIOS can be accessed by pressing F2 when lenovo logo appears during boot-up... there you can edit the setting for boot on numlock.

There a a few keys on my Thinkpad that type numbers and not letters. They are located on the right hand side. This just started for some reason. I'm sure there is a keystroke that must have been entered by mistake. Any thoughts ?

And if that doesn't seem to do the trick, try Shift+ScrLk.

G550 laptop typing in numbers instead of letters

Hello all!
This is my first post to the forums... I wanted to just call tech support but they didn't seem to want to talk to me unless I tried every other imaginable way to fix my problem (even though I'm going off to college in a few days and need this fixed now). But anyway!
So I've noticed that when I play any flash games, if I have to type on my keyboard, the letters all type numbers. Aka, when it asks me to type in my name for the high score, instead of Sarah I'll get something like 35294. Sometimes this will also happen when I'm typing on AIM... but when I delete all the numbers and try again magically it works. This does NOT happen when I'm playing flash games and I cannot seem to avoid the problem.
Also, each letter doesn't seem to represent one number. If I type aaaaaa, I'll get something like 456789 (the number increases with every hit). It is a real issue because some games I can't even play because you have to hit the B button to attack, but it doesn't register that I'm hitting B.
Also, I can't log on unless I have just turned the computer on. Meaning, say I leave it and the laptop goes into sleep mode, if I wake it up and try to type in my password, it refuses to register that I'm typing in the correct password and I have to use Veriface loggin to get on my comptuer. This is very troublesome because Veriface doesn't work the best, so sometimes I just have to restart the computer and try logging in again.

I suggest you try what I did. Go to control panel -> recovery -> open system restore...
Make sure to follow all the directs, plus it was reccomended to me to back up my computer and all the files first just in case something went wrong. Although when you read the window about it, it shouldn't affect documents and such.
Anyway good luck! If that doesn't work, the man at customer service also suggested setting the computer back to its factory settings. This will erase EVERYTHING on your computer and basically wipe it clean as if you'd just bought it. If even that doesn't fix it, you're going to have to call customer service yourself, as it could be a problem with your keyboard hardware and not the computer.
Although hopefully the restore thing will work, because that was really easy and painless. Best of luck!

Lenovo N500 keyboard/ numbers instead of letters/with new keyboard installed/Resolved!!

I thought I would share my recent adventure with a 3000 N500 I have. The laptop was special ordered with Xp Pro on it. I uninstalled and installed Ubuntu, worked great. At some point my wife spilled some soda onto the page up and down keys, resutling in those keys not working. Recently I purchased her another latop and decided to reinstall Windows Xp Pro on the N500 for use with some camera software I have.
I decided to go ahead and order another keyboard from Amazon, for 21 bucks. I wiped the drive and used an OEM Xp Pro to reinstall windows. I was having some issues with sound and modem drivers and decided to go ahead and install SP3 on it to help out with the high def install of drivers. That worked great, but when I recieved the new keyboard Tuesday and install it, I noticed that some dual number letter keys were inputting numbers. I googled and was brought here where a number of posters stated several programs might be the cause. I searched and these programs WERE'NT installed on this, due to a clean install of OEM windows. This took me back to suare one, why. I'm very proficiant in PC's having built many custom machines and assisted others in repair. I decided to test the keyboard by using an flash drive with Linux on it. The keyboard worked like a champ, so that narrowed the issue to windows pr software inside it.
Booting back to windows I started thinking that possibly an update inside SP3. I removed SP3 and rebooted and the keyboard worked great, no errors. Sooo at this point, I installed SP2 to get more up to date on the system. Keyboard still works great at this point, but now the modem and the audio are complaining about driver packs.That was resoved with the install of the high def pack from Microsoft without installing SP3.
I'm posting this to let everyone know, there may be a possibility of an update in SP3 that may be causing keyboard errors. I haven't taken the time to narrow which update, since mine is now working fine, but be aware this conflict may exist. This SP3 issue may be something that Lenovo needs to explore to head off issues as SP3 is forced onto users to get the high def update for audio.
The short story is, if you removed IDvault or GuardID and are still have issues, you might try removing SP3 thru add/remove programs. Reboot and see if the key board starts to funtion properly.

I just did a clean install of WinXP SP2 on a 3000 N100 from the original restore CD. Everything appeared fine after installing SP3.
I went on to install several system drivers and support applications.
Then as soon as I installed the Lenovo Hotkey driver, I noticed some of the letter keys return digits , e.g. "R" > "6".
I tried uninstalling it using add/remove programs, but that didn't help.
An external USB keyboard works OK.
How can I back out of this problem?

When inputing information into some pages such as USAToday crosswords, I start getting numbers instead of letters. What's going on? I don't have a similar problem in I use Microsoft Internet Explorer

Ok, so I tried again this morning and now the songs transfer without problem to the ipod - no error message at all. Hmmmm.
I'm now thinking about upgrading to the latest version of iTunes, but still a little wary as I've had problems with iTunes upgrades previously and having to restore my nano as a consequence.

Hello all! So I looked around the forums for an answer before I posted, and I found a topic that was about this same problem. The person finally solved the problem by system restoring their laptop to before September 19th. I did this and disabled automatic update installation, and I was fine.
Then yesterday my dad was using my laptop to look something up. Apparently he thought it would be "helpful" to install any updates I had, and he updated my laptop before he gave it back. Today the problem came back, where I'll be typing and my keyboard will decide to give me numbers instead of letters.
I tried another system restore, but it didn't list any days before the beginning of October as options, no matter how hard I looked, so I can't possibly restore to before September 19th. Is there any way I can get rid of this problem, or did my dad just ruin my laptop?

There are known issues with earlier models, but their architecture is completely different than yours, so the issue would not be caused in the same way. Two things I would try though:

If neither of those help, you have a one year hardware warranty, so contact AppleCare.

Whenever I close and then reopen firefox all I get is boxes with numbers in them instead of letters or words I have to reboot to get back to regular firefox.

If I leave firefox open and simply minimize everything is fine if I close it and then reopen it even if right away I get the boxes with the numbers instead of letters or numbers.

Try to set the pref gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.use_gdi_table_loading to false on the about:config page.
To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. 
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page. 
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

IChat shows numbers instead of names for facebook contacts, how to fix?

I just started using iChat for Facebook Chat, but it shows numbers instead of names for most of my contacts.
Is there any workaround for this?
Adium shows names just fine, but I want to use iChat instead.

With AIM names there is an Option on the AIM pages to change your Display name. (in your Account Settings)
If you have an AIM Buddy list and stick in my Screen Name (ralphjohnsr) you will notice it displays as Ralph johns R with the Upper case letters and spaces.
I am wondering if FaceBook have done something similar but not everyone has changed (or more likley Facebook are using the "wrong" list or haven't told anyone).
The strange thing is only the two of you have mentioned it so far so there is probably some other explanation.
On the Address Book Front I have added (level 4) to some Buddies that I happen to know via these Apple Forums (under the previous software there were only 5 Levels of posters) when we used to chat using iChat on a more regular basis.
iChat does allow you to Create Nicknames in the Info Card but this Adds them to the Address Book.
(it also has difficulty with lots of Nicknames that are the same such as Dave for David)
It would interesting to know if Adium "Sees" the numbers instead of names. (Or ProteusX if anyone has it)

Firefox displaying little boxes of hex code instead of letters

all of a sudden firefox started displaying little boxes of numbers and letters which i suppose are hex code instead of letters for all web pages visited.

Missing icons are usually supplied by a font that is downloaded from the server (@font-face) as you can probably see by little boxes that show the hex code of the characters.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
You can check the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref on the about:config page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value).

Are the contact details in your contacts app, the phone app uses the contact app to put names against telephone numbers.

I recieve some important PDF files around 4-5 times a day but recently, half of them are coming through as an e-mail packed with numbers instead of a blank e-mail with a PDF attachement.
any idea whats happening here?

If it's a one page PDF then they will tend to show in the body of the body of the email on an iPad. You should still be able to do copy the PDF to another app by pressing and holding the PDF and after a second or two you should get a popup

Check to see if you have contacts in your Contacts app. This is something that can happen sometimes, and is usually cured by resetting the phone. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot. No data will be lost.

Alexandribill, I have been having the exact same issue. I got a new phone and restored my contacts. If the # doesn't have the area code first then the name isn't shown. I just added my husbands area code to my phone and called my phone from his and now his name shows up...Ugh, I have to go through and manually add the area code to all my contacts....
I'd say Verizon needs to rewrite their program to include the area code in the restoring from backup process!
