UCS VLAN Port Count Limit

hi, Cisco:
Is there any way to INCREASE the VLAN Port Count Limit of 6000 Per FInterconnect running 1.4(2b)?
Imagine I have 4 vNIC and 10 selected VLAN Per Service Profile and 2 vHBA.
So in this case, how many VLAN ports will be used? Is it 60 or 40? Assuming it is 60, Does it man that I CAN ONLY HAVE 100 Service Profiles?
just wondering WHY is the VLAN Port Count Limit So Low? How about the other fabric and how DOES it contribute to the VLAN Port Count Limit?
Please advise.
Really appreciate it as we are rolling and rolling out UCS in droves.
SiM

Hey KP,
The VLAN port count is accrued on an individual FI basis.  So each FI gets 6000 VLAN port counts.  This total is made up from a combination of Uplink ports (Border Interfaces) as well as virtual ports (Access Ports or HBAs).  You can see the current allocaiton by:
UCS-250-B# scope fabric-interconnect b
UCS-250-B /fabric-interconnect # show vlan-port-count
VLAN-Port Count:
VLAN-Port Limit Access VLAN-Port Count Border VLAN-Port Count Alloc Status
    6000            95                     114                    Available
UCS-250-B /fabric-interconnect #
The border (uplink) interfaces are pretty easy to understand.  The Access VLAN Port Count is incremented for each VLAN on each vNIC defined, as well as any HBAs.
So in your example, if you have 4 vNICs with 10 VLANs defined on each, plus two HBAs you would have 4 x 10 + 2 = 42 VLAN port counts for this service profile.
The only time this count comes into consideration is with an adaptor that can create multiple virtual ports such as the Palo (M81KR-VIC) adaptor.  We have many cloud providers with 20+ Chassis who never hit the max limit.
This limitation brings in "good design" practices.  If you want to define 4 vNICs for your service profiles, do you really need all 10 VLANs allowed on each of the 4 vNICs?  Crafting an individual vNIC for different purposes such as VMotion, Management, iSCSI etc is a great idea.  But I don't need to allow each & every VLAN on these various purpose NICs.  Just allowing all VLANs on ALL  vNICs is the only way you'll likely exceed the 6000 VLAN port count limit.  This again, would probably identify a design concern more than system limitation.
Let me know if you have any other questions/concerns.

Robert

  • Document count limit under folders

We are trying to figure out what the library file count restriction is for items under a folder.
    We can see here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787(v=office.15).aspx#ListLibrary
Documents :: 30,000,000 per library >> You can create very large document libraries by nesting folders, or using standard views and site hierarchy. This value may vary depending on how documents and folders are organized, and by the type and size of
    documents stored.
Does that mean there is a file count limit of some sort under folders for a library?
    Thank you!

    +1 on Paul's comments.
    In the document you referenced,
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787(v=office.15).aspx#ListLibrary, you will see that the 30,000,000 is a "Supported" number. Microsoft defines three kinds of limits.
Boundaries: Static limits that cannot be exceeded by design
Thresholds: Configurable limits that can be exceeded to accommodate specific requirements
Supported limits: Configurable limits that have been set by default to a tested value
The actual limit on documents is based on restrictions in SQL Server, which is much larger than 30,000,000.
The guidance for number of items per view (or max displayed in a page or retrieved via code in a single batch) is 2000 for SharePoint 2007 and 5000 for SharePoint 2010 and 2013. The 2000 limit was based on "testing" and the 5000 is based on a SQL Server
restriction. Note that in the referenced page the 5000 is listed as a "Threshold" and that you can change this in Central Administration. But, SQL server escalates from row locks to a table lock at 5000 rows. As all documents in all libraries in all sites
in a site collection (and possibly in an entire web application) are stored in a single table, one user exceeding 5000 rows in a request would be locking all other users out for the duration of the request.
Folders, grouped views and the 5000 "Threshold" are all ways of limiting problem sized requests. Bottom line, the size of a library or a folder is practically unlimited, while the maximum number of items displayed in a single request should never exceed
    5000.

  • MDS Code Level for UCS FC Port Channel/Trunking

What is the required MDS code level needed to support FC Port-Channeling/Trunking on a 9222i, 9148, or 9509/9513 w/ Gen2 line cards to UCS 1.4(3)?
I know the fport-channel-trunk feature is needed and was released in MDS 4.2 code but I have seen documents that this level of code wont support these features when used to connect to Cisco UCS.
Can someone confirm?  Is NXOS 5.0(4) or higher required?

    Doug,
I wrote the doc almost a year ago and it doesn't have the latest interop matrix support information. The current MDS NX-OS support is located in this doc: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/mds9000/interoperability/matrix/intmatrx.html
While, I wish this was also duplicated in UCS docs, they are more or less taking the stance that 3rd party (Cisco MDS is this case) interop is maintained by the 3rd party. EMC, Netapp, or even Cisco.
It would be a nightmare updating UCS docs with 3rd party qualifications and support.
The short answer to your question is:
    UCS 1.4(1), 1.4(2), 1.4(3) Is supported by MDS9000: 3.3(4a), 3.3(5), 4.2(1a), 4.2(1b), 4.2(3a), 4.2(5), 5.0(1a), 5.0(4), 5.0(4c)
NPV was introduced in MDS 3.3. f port-channel/trunk was introduced in MDS 4.2.
As Ram mentioned above, 4.2(5) is what I would recommend if I wanted to implement f port-channel and/or f port-trunk. I have also had recent experience with 4.2(5) and it worked great with a large UCS f port-channel/trunk implementation
The specific switch limitations I mentioned in my doc still exist. Only certain models of MDS will support f port-trunk. Almost all models will support f port-channel.

  • The destination message count limit (maxNumMsgs) of 100000 has been reached

So I seem to be getting this error when trying to send JMS messages in Glassfish to a topic after our application has been up and running for about 18 hours. We're using a topic, so a message is being published to the topic and one of two things should be happening if I understand things correctly: 1) Subscribers on the topic should receive a copy of the message, then the message is deleted from the topic or 2) there are no subscribers so the message doesn't get stored in the topic. However, based on the stack trace below, it is quite clear that the topic queueing up messages. The messages we send are non-persistent and the subscribers are non-durable so if no one is listening to the topic there's no reason to queue up the message. And if someone is listening, when the message is sent to the subscriber then it should be removed from the topic. Maybe I'm not understanding how topics work.

If no consumer on the Topic, the message will not be queued to the destination unless it's sent in a transaction in which case it will be cleaned up when the transaction completes if no consumer at time of transaction commit in GlassFish MQ. You can run 'imqcmd list dst', 'imqcmd query dst', 'imqcmd list dur' and 'imqcmd list txn' to check if any other consumer exist on the Topic that caused the messages get queued or held due to incompleted transaction. If there is a consumer client, make sure it's consuming messages and acknowledge messages if using client ack session.

  • Universe Object Count Limit

    Hi,
In our sales database, for each department we track sales based on the sales channels that are used (direct to consumer, retail, warehouse etc). Each channel has its own extensive list of aggregates, measures, filters etc and is contained in its own root level folder. We initially created a single universe containing 2 of these channels since that's all we were tracking. Our analysts frequently need to write reports that contain objects from multiple channels.
As we have started tracking more channels, the question that has come up is that should we create separate universes or keep cramming those new channels into the same universe?
    1) Is there a BO recommended object count in a single universe?
    2) If we choose to have one giant universe with more than 1000 objects , other than maintanability, is there any other performance concerns or othet negative implications?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
We are using BOXI 3.1 SP4

    Hi Ganesh
I dont think that should be a problem from the performance side as Universe is a semnatic layer. Not the actual Data base where you start thinking of overloading. In regarding the count limit i do not have the exact number but in my present universe which is being used since two years has more than 1000 objects.
The only thing that will cause a problem is regarding the tracking of these objects. For this you can maintina proper class structures and then this will make life easy

  • 4500-X VSS with different chassis or port counts

Is it possible to run VSS on 2 4500-X switches of different port counts? For example a 24 port 4500-X and a 32 port 4500-X paired into a VSS cluster?

    Yes.
See this excerpt from the following link:
    Best-in-Class Resiliency
The Cisco Catalyst 4500-X Series is designed for excellent nonstop communications with non-interrupted hardware switching. With Cisco IOS XE Software, customers continue to reap the benefits of this best-in-class resiliency in various ways.
In addition to redundant power supplies and fans, the Cisco Catalyst 4500-X is Virtual Switching System (VSS).
Any two Cisco Catalyst 4500-X Series Switches can be pooled together into a VSS. The two switches are connected with 10 Gigabit Ethernet links called Virtual Switch Links (VSLs). Once a VSS is created, it acts as a single virtual Cisco Catalyst switch delivering the following benefits:

  • ISA550 Deny access to management login on some vlans/ports

    Hi,
I tried to create a firewall ACL rule that would deny access to http/https on the router for some vlans/ports, but it seems like the rule is just ignored.
Also; I can ping all interfaces on the router even between to vlans that are using a same level zone. Even connect to the management login from a different access vlan port.
The main issue is that I don't really like to expose a webserver on a securitydevice to everyone on the LAN side. And I would also like to isolate all vlans and create exceptions if I need to.
Anyone know if this is possible?

    Hi Prithvi Manduva,
    Thank you for replying!
I have tried to set up two simple rules to illustrate my problem. My configuration is this:
VLAN 1: DEFAULT  in zone OFFICE
VLAN 2: CONFIG in zine CONFIG
With Vlan 1 and 2 assigned to port 2 and port 3 in access mode-
DHCP is enabled on both vlans with subnets of 192.168.5.0/24 for OFFICE and 192.168.10.0/24 for CONFIG
    CONFIG_IP is 192.168.10.1
    DEFAULT_IP is 192.168.5.1
    Using these two rules:
    #     FromZone     ToZone     Service     SourceIP     DestinationIP     Action
1     CONFIG     Any     HTTP     Any     CONFIG_IP     Permit
2     Any     Any     HTTP     Any     DEFAULT_IP     Deny
I would think that this would allow the CONFIG zone to access port 80 on config IP, and also deny all other zones to access port 80 on the default gateway for Office (DEFAULT_IP)
I also tried to create a simple Deny ICMP Echo Request to the DEFAULT_IP, but it looks like it's just ignored.
In short, it looks like I can't deny anything to any of the IP addresses of the interfaces on the router.

  • LMS 4.0 VLAN Port Assignment Cat3750X

    Hello together
Have installed LMS 4.0 at a customer. The main switches he uses are the following ones:
    WS-C3750X-24P-S (1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1224)
First problem I faced was with lack of support for Cisco View and the mentioned device. This is fixed with the following package Cisco View Device Update: Cat3750.cv50.13-0.zip. Have tested this today.
But now to my new problem. One reason for Cisco View usage is VLAN assignement. Unfortunately this is not supported with the Cat3750 devices and Cisco View like with other devices. So I thought I show the customer how to do it with the VLAN Port Assignement:
Configuration > Workflows > VLAN > Configure Port Assignment
Unfortunatly it seems that this is not supported with these devices. From the following document I can't find something which underlines the lack of support: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.0/device_support/table/lms40sdt.html#Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series Switches
It even seems it should be supported. See picture in the bottom from the above link.
    My question to the community:
    - Does anybody else have the same switches? If yes, does Configure Port Assignment work in LMS 4.0
    - @Cisco, is this feature really not supported with the following device: WS-C3750X-24P-S? If yes, are any patches planned with release date.
    Thanks for any feedback.
    Erich

    Hi Joseph
Thanks for your feedback. Have asked the customer to do the following steps and send me a screen shot:
    - Configuration > Workflows > VLAN > Configure Port Assignment
    - Select Domain Selector
    - Choose a Domain of a Switch C3750X
    - Click on List Ports
Actually the same thing what I have done during my installation Onsite. When I have done the above steps I only have received a empty windows. Now, a week later it seems to work. Enclosed a screen shot with evidence for all those you have the same devices in use.
Happy that it works. Funny, that it didn't worked when I was onsite. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your feedback / support.

  • Port mirroring limit on SGE2010?

I have been told there is a limit (8) on the number of source ports that can be mirrored to a given destination port. I can find no specifications or other documentation to corroborate this claim. Does anyone have any factual data to confirm or refute this claim?
Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

Hi Gumby,  it is correct, there is a limit up to 8. However, as you note, the documentation is scant, in fact the data sheet and admin guide does not say it.
A long time ago, we had a very controversial case, we had a customer very upset because he had an old SRW2048 switch. The old SRW did allow for ALL ports to be used for a SPAN. However, his switch died due to old age and he was given a SG300 switch. The SG300 supports up to 8 for the SPAN as well.
When the customer discovered this, he was quite unhappy... So I did an investigation to find out if any of our switches would behave like the old end of life/ end of sale switch in this regards. The answer was no, including for the SGE/SFE series models.
However, you can also monitor entire VLANs. So it shouldn't be too much of a problem to cover almost as much traffic as you desire.

  • UCS F port trunking and reserved VSAN confusion

We have an existing UCS infrastructre where all  the FI's FC ports are connected to the MDS9513 as one to one connection ( no port channel or trunking) and the FI is working as "end host mode" . We are planning to move some crtical production application to the UCS infrastrcture and becuse of that we would like to use the FC port chanelling and F-port trunking. While reading some documents I found that there are some restriction on UCS for VSAN numbering while using the FI  for F-port trunking . As per the following doc http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/cli/config/guide/2.0/b_UCSM_CLI_Configuration_Guide_2_0_chapter_010101.html#concept_5223F7F368524A39AB1A47B9F8BFEC8A
it says donot configure VSAN  ID range from 3840 to 4079 . The MDS 9513 is running NX-OS 4.2(3) . Our existing  MDS SAN infrstructure already  have 2 VSANs with ID number  4000 and 4001 ( Both of these VSANS are usied for some storage replication unrelated to UCS). In the UCS we alreay have 2 VSANS' ( 200 and 201) and are planning to create 2 more ( 300 and 301).  My question is if  I  configure the FI's  for  F-port truncking/FC port channeling then what will happen to my existing VSAN 4000 and 4001 on the MDS9513 SAN
    Thanks
    RK

If you are asking how long it will take to enable f-port trunk and how disruptive it will be? It's not lengthy, but, it will cause the link to stop passing traffic and cause SCSI retrys. Your server will know it happened. If your fc multipathing is operating properly there will be no outage. If there are any configuration issues, the link may be down for an extended period, further compounding this disruption in traffic.
You initially asked about two features, f-port trunk and f-port channel. These are seperate features and require different configuration changes. It's best to add one feature at a time, not both in the same configuration change. Each change will be disruptive.
Do one fabric at a time. Ensure the f-port trunk is fully functional before doing the f-port channel, making sure it is functional before starting work on the second fabric. If your multipathing is operating as it should, there will be no outage. If there is any doubt schedule an outage window.

  • File Count Limit On X RAID

Just a general question. I've Striped 6 LUNs (3 RAIDS) together using Disk Utility. (For use on our nearline backup solution.)
Without getting into too much discussion about why using Disk Utility is not the way to Stripe and maintain the RAIDs, I was curious if there was an actual ceiling to the number of files it can keep track of?
Basically, what I'm asking is, like Avid Unity can only track 500,000 files, is there a limit like this on the RAIDS and OSX 10.4 Server?
Hope that's a clear enough question. Just to give you a picture of the set up:
    1 x MacPro 2.0 2xDual-Core 5GB RAM
    Max OS X Server 10.4.11
3 XServer RAID connected to a QLogic1403 10-port fibre switch
All 6 LUNs striped to create one large 24TB drive.
    Thanks!

The limit is very high. I've personally tested with 3 million files in a single folder. It worked fine... as long as you didn't try and view that folder in the Finder.
Way back when, there were issues with > 3 million files in a single folder, if you formatted the Xserve RAID with UFS. I can't see using UFS for anything these days... so that shouldn't be an issue.
But to answer the question... no there should be no issues.
