UEV-2.0 SyncProvider

I'm currently implementing UE-V for a company which uses offline files and folder redirection. We are finding that when the SyncProvider is turned off, that the settings sync between Computer A and Computer B reliably. However on devices which are off the
network, the UE-V tray icon throws up an error. So this isn't an option
If the SyncProvider is turned on, the settings don't reliably sync onto computer B. We find that when we monitor the local cache, it takes approximately 30 seconds for the settings to sync. If the application is opened too soon, the settings aren't applied.
Any advice?

You may want to adjust your
Synchronization Timeout to higher than 2 seconds to provide more time for your application to sync before it times out and launches.

Uev.SyncController.exe crashes on the Citrix XenApp 6.5 (Provisioning server)

I'm currently implementing UE-V 2.0 which uses SyncProvide=None on the Windows 7 workstations and Citrix XenApp servers 6.5 . I'm facing the following issue on the Citrix XenApp server only and the Popup messages appear spontaneously and random on the screen.

UEV slow on VPN - UEV application going to home drive

Hi Folks..
We are doing a pilot UEV testing. We have pilot users who used roaming profile so now we have removed roaming profile from thier user account and configured folder redirection and UEV for them.
All the settings both app and windows are captured and travelled from systems to systems but we are seeing issue while on VPN... When these test UEV users open any aplication, for eg. office 2010 when we open it is
reaching in to the home drive where we have the appdata been redirected using folder redirection.
You can see this reporting when launching. Hence the performance degrades. Any assistance in this reagrds is appreciated.

You should check out UE-V 2.0. We have made some improvements in how we handle synchronization. Including removing the need for folder redirection. Instead we built into UE-V the ability to cache locally and then push to the central server on a heartbeat
driven by a scheduled task. This SyncMethod=SyncProvider and is the new default when you install UE-V 2.0.

Port used by the UEV agent.

Hi there,
We are using UEV 2 and it is causing issue for one of our application called CCS, its a java based application. After implementing UEV the application has stopped working. Only after i uninstall the UEV agent the CCS application works. If i disable the UEV
agent services it does not resolve the issue.
The CCS application vendors did some trobleshooting and found below event log-
connect: jdbc:oracle:thin:@FRCCSAPL:1521:RSCB11^M
FRCCSAPL is the application server and 1521 is the port number. The event log denotes connection to database is not successful, So I am guessing UEV and the
CCS application are using the same port and is causing the conflict.
Can anyone confirm the port number used by UEV. The UEV debug log does not give any clue on the issue.

UEV 2.0 - Support for Windows 7 Start Menu & Taskbar

I have enabled Desktop settings using GPO as I'm aware this is disabled by default.
I've found many articles which direct you to the UEV Gallery for downloading a custom XML template but I want to use the OOB support provided in UEV 2.0. However, I appear to be having some difficulty syncing the start menu & pinned taskbar icons
using UE-V 2.0 in Windows 7 (x64). Has anyone had any success in using this or can someone confirm that this feature is available in UEV 2.0?

Hi Felipe and Jim,
The best solution is to use Folder Redirection with UE-V. This then allows you to centrally locate the users %APPDATA% which contains the pinned icon files.
I also found a link the the same Startmenu.xml but you must remember to remove the ".lnk" extension from the registry key for the UE-V agent config.
All be it I have some issues where the TaskBar does not sync and then sometimes it does. Still working on this.

Disable Active Setup with Mandatory Profile and UEV 2.x??

Hi, I have been doing some research into UEV configuration with the use of mandatory profiles. I'm wondering if Disabling Active setup is something we should do to increase the logon time? if so what issues may I run into if I disable? what
is the process for disabling, is it just delete each registry entry or is there a global setting?

Not really an Ue-V question, but here goes..
Active setup is a tricky one. In order to disable active setups you can find out what triggers the active setup to run or not run and incorporate those settings into your mandatory profile. i.e. whatever registry keys the active setup creates
when it runs. If they are present, this should prevent the active setup from running. Results can be mixed depending on what the active setup is doing. Trial and error is required.
Depending on how the mandatory profile is configured, stored, accessed, etc it can greatly reduce login times. If this is for some kind of RDSH environment without persistent profiles I would recommend avoiding any applications with active setup because
you can run into issues during times whenever everyone is logging in. i.e. each morning. There can only be so many msiexec.exe running on each box at any given time, so users get queued up waiting for an opening. I recommend, if possible,
to repackage the applications that currently have an active setup in such a way that will remove the active setup. If that isn't possible, stuffing the whatever information active setup writes into the mandatory profile may work. Good luck.

UEV settings captured not roaming to another system

Hi,
We are testing UEV ver.2 onto 50 users on Win 7 system with offline enabled for laptops. I understand we have sync provider so not required to enable offlne file but the customer wants offline files enabled, so i have sync and offline both enabled. Offline
is enabled on laptops only not on desktops. From GP we have disabled "do not use sync provider".
The issue we are experiencing with some tester is that settings are not getting carried over to another system i.e. If i change IE favorite on PC1 the settings gets captured on both within users profile and home drive (setting storage path). On PC2 with
the same user account the favorite does not migrate, although the home drive has the latest package setting template.
Has anyone experienced such an issue and advise how to investigate and try fixing this ..
appreciate any assistance in this regards.

If the setting are updating when you hit the sync now button in the Company settings then it sounds like the files are being updated in the home directory but are not being applied to the local system.
I would look at the schedule task are they disabled? Does the event viewer show any errors?

The main Schedule task you want to verify is working is "Sync Controller Application". This one will sync the settings from the other system.

IE8 not launching after UEV 2 installation

We are pilot testing UEV 2 and few of our testers faced issue with IE 8 after the UEV 2 was installed on thier system Win 7. The issue is IE8 would fail to launch. If we uncheck
it from company setting center IE opens, if we delete the setting files from users local profile and home folder and then open IE 8 it will open. However we are not sure what is causing this issue.
Has anyone else encounteerd such an issue ?

This I am guessing issue with “MicrosoftInternetExplorer.common.pkgx”
I am still unable to find the actual cause so any suggestion to resolve this would be higly appreciated.

So, some of UEV 2.0 clients are syncing.
This one isn't.
So I'm in the event logs, and the App Agent piece shows
An exception has occurred while synchronizing settings packages. Exception message: "Could not find a part of the path '\\dc\UEVSETTINGS\westsalesuser9\SettingsPackages'.".
Event 13000.
But that location it totally writeable.
So basically, this one client cannot read OR write.
I've uninstalled, re-installed.
I've verified that Get-UEVTemplate shows the templates A-OK.
What else can I do / check?

There was a problem sending a command to this program. Excel with new templates.

I have recently deployed these UEV templates for Office 2013. In particular, I'm having an issue with Excel 2013. Whenever I let UEV sync settings for this application and I click on a .xlsx file, I get the infamous "There was a problem sending
a command to this program..." error message. This drove me nuts for a week thinking there was something wrong with Excel. I finally figured out it was the Excel UEV settings causing the issue. I've tried deleing the settings package file,
but no luck. I can reproduce the issue pretty easily.

CRUD insert problems.

Hello all,
I was wondering about DB operations in JSF pages, so I took a look over the Single Page CRUD example. What hitted me was there is a need for a two step insertion, first by issuing a select in search for the biggest ID of the primary key, and after that the insertion of the element with that obtained biggest ID + 1. I see at least 2 problems with this approach:
1. Concurrency issues.What happends if 2 users are issuing at the same time an insert operation over the same table? There is the possiblity of getting the same ID to insert, and the first one could insert, but the second one would fail even if it's request is logically corect (validated & converted). I see three solutions over the insert problem:
a. lock on the database (if it's possible).
b. using a synchronized block in the application bean to get the ID and insert.
c. using DB specific constructs (e.g. MySQL's AUTO_INCREMENT)
2. Overhead issues. Why doing in two steps an operation that should be just an insert? Previous a. an b. approaches do not solve our overhead problem, because we still have two steps in insertion; we only synchronize them.
I was wondering which is the best practice for production quality web applications. Personally because I've picked MySQL as DB I've used AUTO_INCREMENT, but the immediate huge and obvious drawback is dumping DataProvider's capability of changing the storage medium at a glance.

database bound Data provider underneath uses CachedRowset, which uses SyncProvider to take care of concurrency problem. If the default RIOptimisticProvider is not enough, it possible to register other more sophisticated SyncProvider.

I believe, it is possible to let the DB auto increment the primary key field, and left it out in the insertion from data provider.

Unhandled Exception when launching Company Settings Center or UevSqmSession.exe

using UE-V 2.0 we get some errors. Currently we're still evaluating and therefore only have 5 installations. 2 out of them do have unhandled exceptions thrown. I think UevSqmSession is starting by task scheduler:

The miracle is other applications using this very same .NET framework version are running without problems. Also - as mentioned - the tray icon is running. Sync also does work as expected.
Is there anybody else experiencing this issue ? Can MS please have a look ?

UE-V - How UE-V syncs data ?

I am trying to configure a UE-V template which would support cookies.
Internet Explorer 10/11 changed the way cookies works aka "WebCache".
It seems that after the latest hotfix "KB2955387" there are no locks, And it can be done.
I added the localappdata section to UE-V template and included all files within WebCache directory to be synced.
Now, WebCache is quite large (32MB and grows) I would like to know if UE-V is doing :
A) Compression before and after moving the data to the network and from network.
B) Active write/read back - write/read data to network not just after closing the app.
C) Streaming - moves data by demand (Only when data is being "called" UE-V agent should read the data from network).
D) Sync based blocks and not just file based (like DFSR).

A: UE-V with both Offline Files and SyncProvider use
SMB over a standard network share. The version of SMB used and how the data is processed depends on the version supported by the client and server systems.
With Server 2012 and Windows 8 systems, SMB 3.0 is leveraged. With neither method does UE-V have its own network agent or communication and thus it does not perform compression.
B: The sync triggers documented at the link I previously provided. Some settings are asynchronous and do update immediately, such as the Windows Desktop, others follow other applicable triggers such as app launch or close, logon or logoff, or are synchronized
every 30 minutes by the scheduled task.
C: Configuring a SyncMethod of None causes UE-V to directly store and load the settings from Settings Storage. There is only local cache when the Settings Storage location cannot be contacted.
D: See A.

UE-V 2.0 Bug

Hi there
I'm not sure if anyone has reported this before or if there is a fix already but I could not find anything about it anywhere.
Basically once you install UE-V 2.0 and you use the default Microsoft templates, when you double click an excel spreadsheet or a Visio file you will get the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program".
Has anyone experienced that? Does a fix exist?

What do you exactly mean by with updating the “MicrosoftOffice2010Win32.xml” in the central location?
I tried the following:
1.
In the ..\ \Deploy\UE-V_settings_template directory there where no Office.xml templates. Only application templates. So I copied
the default xml files from C:\Program Files\Microsoft User Experience Virtualization\Templates to the ..\
\Deploy\UE-V_settings_template directory
2. Renamed the H:\SettingsPackages\MicrosoftOffice2010Win32.Excel_old and als did that with the H:\SettingsPackages\MicrosoftOffice2010Win32.common_old
3. I ran the "Template Auto Update" as administrator and logged off an on.
I am using UE-V 2.0.
The issue is still there.
I also noticed that the MicrosoftOffice2010Win32.common is almost 32mb in size and contains a lot of media files. See also thread:
