Ultimatte AdvantEdge 1.6.2

Has anyone installed Ultimatte AdvantEdge 1.6.2 AND gotten it to work?
I tried it with FCS UB and Final Cut won't even launch.
With FCS OSX, Final Cut works fine but using the Ultimatte filter locks up FCP.

We've been using Ultimatte advantage for a few years now. It worked flawlessly with FCP 4.5, then when 5.X came along, things went screwy. Since the same dongle works with After Effects, as a workaround we use After Effects to do the keys, then bring them in to FCP. IT's a pain, but we that's what we do.
To answer your question, no, we haven't gotten it to work... reliably.
It's a shame. Ultimatte is an awesome keyer, but for some reason, they haven't kept up with FCP. Just my opinion.

  • Reco for 3rd party Chroma-keying software (Ultimatte or better)

Does anyone have any experience of working with Ultimatte AdvantEdge Chroma Key Software? I'm looking for something that will key nicely in post and perform better than the built-in doo-dah in our beloved FCP (not that there's anything too wrong with that). Meanwhile footage-wise, everything is stunningly lit (flat where it should flat, even where it should be even, excellent color temperature, etc). It couldn't be shot any better. God, it is soooo beautiful. And the costumes, simply breathtaking... wonderful color balance and choices. This was shot and designed by true creative geniuses.
But I digress. So, if anyone has an info about Advantage or any other chroma-keying software drop me a note.
Oh, and please no "should ofs" I'm just the bleedin' editor. And by the way... did I mention the footage is stunningly beautiful?
    Thanks

I have five keyers including Ultimatte, which is pricey.
I prefer dvmatte pro from dvxgarage, which isn't pricey

  • FCP 101 + Green screen

I am new to FCP and was wondering if anyone knows where I can find FCP 101 tutorials online - I understand the concepts and have been using other editors on a windows system for a while however, the new UI makes me feel like I nothing about editing since I'm struggling to navigate around.
I have also been doing quite a bit of keying with a green screen however, the built in filters are...horrible - they cannot seem to handle anything fine like hair and, do not handle anything like shaddows.
I have a plugin called "ultimatte advantedge" which does an amazing job but, when I render the video, I get these annoying crosshairs which only appear when I've added the filter but, I cannot work out where they come from. I composited a video of my cat over a random image off the net to show the crosshairs at http://i29.tinypic.com/e892km.jpg
I'd appreciate it if you have any suggestions for better ways or plugins to key out the green screen, or any help at all.

I assume you have FCP 6, part of FCS 2? Here are some good tutorials:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/tutorials/#fcstudio
    http://library.creativecow.net/tutorials/applefinalcutpro
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/fcp_homepageindex.html#fcp
If you have FCS2, you can get somewhat better keying in Motion,
But you've got Ultimatte!!! That's fantastic. I get the impression that Ultimatte the best,
but it's super expensive. Lucky you.
I took a look at the manual
    http://www.ultimatte.com/UltimatteMain/Downloads_files/AdvantEdgeManual.pdf
and couldn't find anything about those crosshairs. Maybe they are part of the
demo version? Are you using the USB dongle?
    Ultimatte support is 1-818-993-8007
    Good luck!

  • Reflectmedia Ultimatte DV – Digital Play Back Problem

I'm currently trying to export some Final Cut video sessions via Firewire into Ultimatte DV blue screening (http://www.ultimatte.com/products/product_ultdv.jsp). It use to work, however, FCP has now decided not to send to the unit. I've also tried testing the A/V Devices to out put into the camera, and that doesn't seem to work neither.
I'm running this on a MacBook Pro (Intel) with 1Gig's and the latest version of FCP. Please help if you know of some solutions.
    Thank you in advance.

Mac OS X (10.4.6)   MacBook Pro

    I figured it out!
I guess it's Print to Video in the file menu, only problem now is, Ultimatte DV doesn't have two firewire ports where you can stream background in and capture out. The Ultimatte people are telling me that S-Video is a better option for outputing backgrounds anyways, because it's a better quality and it's uncompressed. Does anyone have any suggestions on how you can still use firewire out and capture in?
I might have my company purchase a PC based laptop solution, since Apple has not only discontinued PCMCIA support, but also S-Video on their MacBook Pro's.

  • Plug-in or 3rd party for Chroma keying with DV footage

We shoot Betacam SP, captured to DV with a DSR-45P DV/DVCAM deck.
From what I learn on the web, green is preferred if you edit on DV, due to the color sampling. (4:1:1 for PAL?).
However, it also depends on what background you have. Use green if you are in the forest, use blue if you are at the beach. Sort of.
The built-in chroma keying in FCP is OK, but not more than that. What do you recommend using?
I've found the dVMatte from www.dvgarage.com - is it good?

Just for DV media, the AdvantEdge plug-in from Ultimatte has a preset. It has a resampling method for 4:1:1 (or 4:2:0 if PAL) media like DV.

  • Problem with Matrox Mini, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570, Premiere 5.5.2 and After Effects CS5.5

    Hello,
We have a couple video workstation PC's in our office.
Premiere and After Effects have been crashing lately with increasing frequency - about every two minutes now.
    Here is the setup:
    Hardware
Matrox Mini - Matrox Utility release 5.5.1
Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 - Driver release 275.33
Intel Xeon X5660 2.8 GHz processors
    24 GB Ram
    Software
    Adobe CS5.5, specifically...
    After Effects 10.5.0.253
    Premiere 5.5.2
    Windows 7 64-bit
We have two 21" LCD monitors in dual display running from the computer, and the Matrox Mini outputs a preview signal to a 15" CRT.
The crashes occur when I have After Effects and Premiere open at the same time. I am editing in a Matrox 720p29.97 timeline in Premiere. I imported several compositions from AE into Premiere through Dynamic Link and am matching audio with the animations in comps. When I switch back to AE to make an edit in the comp, After Effects generates a crash warning and then gives me the opportunity to save the project under a new name. After saving, it closes down completely. The Matrox WYSIWYG Control Panel in the system tray crashes during AE's crash, disabling the preview to the CRT from Premiere and AE. Since the Premiere sequence is a Matrox preset - in order to have output to the CRT - this freezes the timeline; the video and audio no longer play. When I save and then try to close Premiere, Premiere freezes and will not close without a force quit via the Task Manager.
In order to deal with this temporarily, I am editing in an AVCHD 720p30 sequence preset in Premiere, which doesn't send a preview feed to the CRT, obviously, since it's not a Matrox preset and the CRT is connected via the Matrox Mini. It's more than a minor inconvenience, since I use the CRT for color accuracy.
It is frustrating, since we did not have this problem until the recent CS5.5.2 update. We have tried changing drivers for the GTX 570 and changing the Matrox utility software to other versions, but no luck.
Is there a combination of GTX 570 drivers, Matrox software releases, and AE/Premiere settings that will make this work? I know there are "Known Issue" posts with Nvidia cards on Matrox's website, which include the GTX 570, but, again, this problem started with the Adobe CS5.5.2 update.
Any help here would be great, and I am willing to provide more information about the system and our crashes if it helps find a solution for the community, as I know this is not an isolated problem after reading Nvidia's, Matrox's, and Adobe's forums. I just can't find a hollistic solution on any of the individual manufacturer's forums.
    Thank You.
    Jordan

I've been running with Matrox for years, starting with the Axio LE. I do 75% broadcast work and find that the Matrox works very well with my kind of workflow. Monitoring is critical and since we have to deal with 3rd. party solutions, Matrox was my pick dating way back to 2006. Sure I've had frustrations with it, but I've made far more money off Matrox than frustration.
       Here's my nearly crash-free setup:
    Gigabyte GZ-X58A-OC moboard
Intel 990X (only overclocking to 4.0)
    24Gb of Kingston HyperX Ram
    GTX580 Graphics Card
    Matrox MXO2-LE w/Max
Crucial 240Gb Sata III drive (the one that has a nearly perfect score on Newegg's site)
    2 x 2Tb WD Blacks Raid 0
    2 x 1Tb WD Blacks Raid 0
Win 7 Ultimatte (it's a high-end version of Windows that's great for keying!)
    CS5.5 Suite
    Boris Red 5
    Boris Continuum Complete 8
Trapcode Shine, Form, 3d Stroke, Starglow, and Particular
    Optical Flares by Video CoPilot
The reason I list all of that software, is that it all seems to get along together, including with Matrox! So, I can't say I highly endorse Matrox because I've never tried Black Magic or running an external monitor off of my video card.
I use After Effects with all sorts of plug ins and rarely have crashes. If I put in a long day I'll have the usual crashes here and there (mainly with PremierePro), but nothing that has required evan a soft reboot of the computer.
My frustration with Matrox is mainly the delay that often comes with Adobe coming out with a new release and Matrox taking 2 or 3 months to catch up, though when Adobe went from 5 to 5.5, there was no delay at all.
I think that a lot of the people who trash Matrox probably haven't used a Matrox product in years. But before you listen to me, I must confess that I was an early adopter (and advocate) of SSDs and even today, many people on this forum think they're still a waste of money!
I'll close by simply saying that I've not left Matrox after 5+ years, but keep in mind I haven't had the bad experiences that so many others seem to have had, but again, perhaps they had those bad experiences long ago.

  • Best chroma key plugin for FCP7???

I have Final Cut Pro 7 and Motion and would like to know what is the best chroma key plugin.
I've heard of DV Matte, Adobe Keylight, and Red Giant's Primatte Keyer Pro, but have no idea which one to get. Personally, I would prefer to stay in the Final Cut/Motion environment as I am more familiar with their interface than with After Effects.
Thanks in advance for any advice,

there is a very good keyer in Motion; its free and you have it
    the best; well thats Ultimatte:

  • Is Fluid Mask 3 the best Knockout Plug-ins if not which one is?

Is Fluid Mask 3 the best Knockout Plug-ins for Photoshop, if not which one is? I will appreciate it if someone can recommend a good and sophisticated Photoshop Knockout Plug-ins. Thank you

    Kim,
In answer to your original question, Fluid Mask 3
is probably the most fully featured of the current masking tools, and apparently the most expensive. Thanks to your message, I took a closer look at Fluid Mask 3 and, as a result, I have added it to my "wish list" for when I get enough free budget for the purchase. But thanks for keeping me from "blowing my money" on a lesser tool.
I had originally decided against Fluid Mask based on the fact that much of its masking is based on the concept of "inside colors" and "outside colors" and, indeed, Fluid Mask has some very powerful tools for implementing that concept. But in
many cases that concept breaks down because many colors appear both inside and outside a "foreground" object.
Some insects and other creatures in nature rely on protective coloration (camouflage) and, for example, such a bug sitting on tree bark will have most of the tree bark repeated in its color pattern.
But even human subject subjects can have surrounding colors repeated on them, either by happenstance or by the phenomenon of radiosity, in which each illuminated object becomes a secondary light source.
In the real world, the circumstance in which the foreground object has a unique set of colors different from the background is very rare. That is why I used Corel KnockOut 1.5 so much. In it, you draw an inside line and an outside line and they define very local sets of inside and outside colors which can be interpolated for a transition mask. Those color sets can change continuously along the boundary, allowing for repeated color reversals. The motto of the original Ultimatte KnockOut (before Corel purchased it) was, "There are no edges, there are only transitions." KnockOut produced some very good knockouts for me for that reason. However, the tedium of drawing inside lines and outside lines, and refining them, slowed the process of getting a good mask.
Fluid Mask's automatically produced adjustable vector sub-boundaries are a very interesting, unique, and useful feature that can help deal with objects that have areas of color that match the color of background areas, by letting you choose which areas are inside and which areas are outside. Those automatically drawn vector patches are what changed my mind about Fluid Mask. I think I could get a good mask faster with Fluid Mask 3 than I could with KnockOut 1.5, and that is the reason why I think Fluid Mask 3 might be worth its rather high price.
But, like I said before, it will be awhile before I have the budget to make that purchase. There are several software tools that have higher priority, like an upgrade to Photoshop CS3 Extended, for example.

  • Why oh why won't AE CS5 run under XP Pro 64 bit?

Francly, i'm getting fed up of this stupid CG world we live in where users have to juggle and zig zag in between the permanent idiotic capitalistic software development battles going on way above our heads for teh sake of profit.
I have a little pipeline  of 20 machines, couple of servers, couple of workstations and a bunch of render nodes. 80% which were set up with Vista (Pro Ultimatte and Business) had to be downgraded to XP Pro 64 for compatibity issues with some of the tools i was using, plug ins for 3ds max and AE mostly. believe it or not, downgrading from this piece of crap Vista did cost me money! ...and now that it is all finally running properly... the one tool i use for compositing in my pipeline that is AT LAST (and the last tool of its kind!!!!) 64 bit native.... WILL NOT RUN UNDER XP 64!!!! Which means that just because for reasons i absolutely ignore Adobe is forcing me to upgrade all operating systems on my network in order to finally benefit of what AE should have been able to do already for at least over a year! Wow! great marketting plan!
So i'm asking two questions here... and excuse my lack of formality....
1 -  ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME?????!!!!
2 - What are my options if i want to upgrade to AE and Premiere cs5 in order to finally make a full use of those within the 64 bit pipeline (that all my other tools are already set up for ...for years!!!!) without having to spend s#itloads extra in operating systems and other consequent upgrades? Cause as much as i'm willing to go with the flow... i'm just fed up with wasting my money over political decisions ADOBE, AUTODESK, MICROSOFT and more are making just to squeeze a little more each time.
    pe@ce,
    Adriano Zanetti

Obviously you did not really read my post, so i'm gonna make it more clear.
I was forced to downgrade to XP pro 64 bit in order to follow what you call "progress", in order to use new tools, new releases, new possibilities, such a Nvidia PhysX related tools which would not run under Vista 64 at that time.
Now instead of shooting in my legs and make me look like i belong to the prehistoric times, try to answer my question honestly and properly since you bother doing so. Not developping CS5 for XP 64 is either an agreement made with Microsoft, or a way to cut down costs on a development that was already a big fat money pit since it took ages to finally come up with a 64 bit version Premiere and AE, after YEARS of existence of 64 bit systems. You can try to make me look as dumb and bad as you want... but those are facts that don't make Adobe's purpose and motives look very neat.
Now to read from a "community professional" that what i thought was my legitimate request as a commercial user and active member of the industry is basically irrelevant because "it's all my own fault"... wow!
Now i don't have access to the same information you have it seems, but look at the amount of users who are still working in the caves like me running Win XP 64 for similar reasons and tell me if it is a considerate choice from Adobe to neglect them. As most professional in this business, i like to be informed and NOT FORCED! Seems fairly decent to expect from Adobe to be notified earlier... much earlier than on the release date of the upgrade that my set up will be obsolete!
And for the very same reasons i did not renew my Autodesk subscriptions... i shall not upgrade to CS5 and will look an other way to find a cheaper more "personal/people" oriented solution, one where the support will not slap in my face "it's you own fault" like ADSK and Adobe do when you tickle relevant topics.
Conclusion, i don't like it... and i don't feel i've put myself in this pinch, but thanks for your answer Mylenium, i'm one step closer to invest in The Foundry Nuke as a compositing solution and open source alternative for editing.

  • Live audio capturing question

We're using Reflectmedia and a Ultimatte DV. Since the ultimatte DV only captures either S-Video and output Firewire, we have no audio. Therefore, when the receiver of the wireless mic is connected to Digidesign M Box 2, I can hear it on the speaker. However, I can’t seem to log and capture the audio in on Final Cut Pro HD. Is there a way to log and capture the audio using a wireless mic?
I setup the Capture setting to use the MBox2 instead of the internal audi, or DV Firewire.
FCP sees the DigiDesign interface in the capture setting. I think that DigiDesign limits the abliliy to record from FCP. However, if FCP is actually recongnizing the interface, why couldn't I use it to capture audio from usb (MBOX2)while video from another firewire source, Ultimatte DV.
The problem here is, I'm attempting to "Log and Capture" the Ultimatte DV (whick only processes video and not audio), through firewire while I capture audio through another source.
    Thanks for all your effort

It would be very nice if you people could share some thoughts on a little problem I have.Sure thing.
I'm gonna try and capture audio from a flash-application (www.delorean.se/mixer) and convert it to a .mp3-file.
I browsed the web for a few days for a solution and first thought of using The Java Soun API but later read that it doesn't convert to .mp3 :(
I managed to read and create .wav files with it and it wasn't too difficult at all so it was kind of sad that there's no .mp3 support
Then I found JMF and saw that it has a mp3 converter plug-in :)Technically, no. JMF has an MP3 plugin that allows JMF to play MP3s, but the plugin does not allow you to create MP3s. Actually, the same plugin allows JavaSound to play MP3s too..
Would the JMF be a good tool to use for my problem? No, because you cannot encode MP3s. Only decode them...
Does it work like Java Sound API?Not at all.
Does anyone have any general tips when it comes to capture audio from the web using java? (It feels like I've looked over the whole web and I didn't find anyone trying to do the same thing or someone who has done anything similar in the past)Capturing audio is easy. JavaSound + applet...but if you need to store it as an MP3, you're probably going to want to build an Adobe Flex application.
Adobe Flex is their free API you can use to build Flash applications. Google it.
I would be so very happy if I could get some answers on these questions! Be happy. :-)

  • Suggestions on best way to shoot this....

I will be editing a short commercial where there will be an actor speaking in the foreground and and some sort of action happening in the bacground ( let say a football game ). Now, the producer wants to edit this so the background freezes at different spot while the the actor continue to speak.
So basically background goes in and out of freeze mode while what ever is going on in the foreground continues. What's the best way to shoot and edit this ??? Thanks

I would also add that green screen can be tricky in
    the non-linear world.
Hmm? Post production and visual effeccts has been
non-linear for almost two decades at this point? I
can't remember the last time I heard of a visual

Your suggestions to shoot tape only apply if this is
a video/low budget project. The great majority of
decent visual effects work is still shot on film, to
this very day, as are most commercials. And posted
    non-linearly.

    Maxx,
Sorry for the confusion. My experience with green screen has been done with a studio, ultimatte installed on the studio cam and someone standing in front of the green wall. The switcher did the rest.
If you shoot the subject in front of a green wall and then attempt to do the matte work in post, it's possible to get keying problems due to poor lighting or incorrect wardrobe on the talent.
Perhaps, most commercials are shot on film in your world, but there's a whole bunch of folks in small markets and cable companies making commercials for local companies. These folks in my experience work with little budget, no time and clients who don't want to pay for production. Their jobs are difficult and they aren't producing art or winning awards. They're just trying to do the best job they can.

I would disagree. Most of us aren't lucky enough to be in your great majority producing decent visual effects. I've seen some pretty great work done low budget and the folks who do it deserve a little help and lots of respect.

  • What is the best chroma key software for a Mac?

I have the lighting, the green screen...all I need now is the software. I'm led to believe there is a better program than Photoshop for use with chroma keying...I just need some suggestions! Anyone?

If you're doing stills and not working in video Photoshop will be more than adequate for what you need. But, unless you're going to drop your subject onto a greenish sort of background, I would stay away from greenscreen and go for a tone that will give you contrast around your subject and a color that is in the same vicinity of what you're going to be using later. Unless you really know what you're doing, and often when you do, you are bound to get some degree of wraparound from the background, and if that wraparound is green, it will only complicate your project.
Having done more of these projects that I care to think about or even remember, take my advice... or not.
The masking tools built in to Photoshop CS5 are really pretty good now. That's what I would use, but if you don't have the latest version or haven't mastered them yet, there are several third party masking programs you can try. Fluid Mask, MaskPro and Ultimatte Knockout come to mind. Ultimatte was the tool of choice for a long time but has suffered from zero support or updating from Corel. The other two offer 30 day trials. Have fun.
