Ultra 10 output problem

Hi all, first post here.
I got a sun u10 from ebay a while back. I put together a null modem cable and can connect via the terminal with no problem, here's the post info:
Sun Ultra 5/10 UPA/PCI (UltraSPARC-IIi 360MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.15, 768 MB memory installed, Serial #11012275.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:a8:8:b3, Host ID: 80a808b3.
Boot device: disk File and args:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
When I plug in a monitor to the VGA output and turn on the machine, the "energy save" light on the monitor goes off for a second, and it looks like you're about to get output to the monitor, then it just comes back on and nothing. From what I understand to get output via the onboard VGA output you have to plug in a keyboard, so I got a keyboard and mouse, it arrived today. When I plug in the keyboard, attach the monitor to the VGA output, and turn on the power I get one beep, the lights on the keyboard flash a few times, and the same thing happens with the monitor, still no output. It has the Elite 3D card, is the output defaulting to that maybe? Would it help if I removed the card?
With the keyboard plugged in it appears I can't access the terminal via the serial port. minicom says online, but I don't see any output. Does this mean the keyboard is broken, or is there a setting in openboot I have to change to make things kosher for VGA output? I tried both with the mouse plugged into the keyboard and without. I also tried an old Gateway2000 15" I believe Vivitron monitor, and a 19" NEC AccuSync 95f monitor, same with both monitors.
Sorry for all the questions, any response is appreciated.

I was trying not to have to do that. I finally figured it out about midnight last night, after about 5 hours of messing with openboot. I had this poor machine so screwed up a couple of times with my openboot ignorance, at one point I think I saved the power-off command to the nvram somehow, so when I turned the machine on it just immediately powered off...then I turned on diag-switch so it was taking like 10 minutes to boot, then trying to auto-discover the network infinitely...I finally got stop-n to clear the nvram. Had to do that a couple of times overall.
set auto-boot false
set diag-switch false
set output-device /pci/blah blah blah to the vga output
set input-device keyboard
I think that's all it took once it was all said and done. At least now I know a little more about openboot. Now to figure out how to do ANYTHING in solaris!
Thanks

• Macbook mini DVI to DVI output problems

hi
I've been using a samsung syncmaster 22" with my macbook for about a year now with no problems using the mini DVI to DVI connection
then earlier this week i used a different DVI cable to plug my playstation 3 into the screen, when i plugged the computer DVI cable back into the screen lots of red/pink pixels have taken over the screen and when the desk is nudged red lines flash up
i thought it might be either the DVI cable or the mini DVI to DVI adapter and replaced both to no avail, i have also tested all the cables on other screens/with other computers, and tested the screen with my playstation. Screen and cables all work fine so i think it must be some kind of output problem, but cant work out what it could be seeing as nothing would have happened to the port on the actual computer whilst changing connections on the samsung screen
sorry for the long winded post, really wanna know what the problem is here

Hi cbeth,
welcome to macbook forum.
For your friend macbook, try to press F7 back and forth to switch between mirror and expanded mode.
Try to update your macbook hardware firmware and software using software updater and repair permission after that...application/utilities/disk utility/repair permission.
Also reset your PRAM and PMU.
Open your friend system preference / display and try to compare and set yours similar to hers, including resolution, color depth, refresh rate.
Good Luck.

• Mac mini audio output problems

This is similar to a problem that appeared before, but with a different twist.
On 4 July all was well. On 5 July I switched on and there was no "chord" from the Mac. When I collected my mail - no sound from my speakers (which are part of my screen). Logged on to a couple of sites - no sound.
The System Profiler, under the "Audio (Built In)" category, says: "No Built-in Audio." I know that's wrong because it's always worked before and when I plug my headset in it works fine.
When I go to the Sound preferences panel in System Preferences, it finds the headset but if I unplug that it finds nothing.
I tried running the hardware test (by putting in the OS X install disc and holding D during startup.) It couldn't find a problem.
So, as far as I can see, audio output is fine for the USB headset output but not for the others. Is there a simple fix? The nearest Apple store is about 200 miles away and I don't fancy the idea of posting the Mac off.
(And I think it's still under warranty for a couple more weeks.)
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

hello mini users with the "no audio output" problem
it seems that there are faulty output jacks in the macbook and the mac mini
there are two things you can try:
i tried everything and began thinking about what new software i had installed. it was "macam" which enables you to use older webcams on OSX. i needed that to use my webcam on skype.
macam installs a file called "macam.component"
if you have the same, do this - take that file out of:
(your hard drive)/library/quicktime - macam.component
and just put it on your desktop
restart, then in your sound pref's choose your audio output (if doesn't work restart again)
the first time i took it out, i had my sound back instantly, another time i had to choose audio output in sound prefs. you kind of have to try different things. after you get your sound back, you can put back "macam.component" to use your webcam.
it seems macam causes the problem, the two can not work at the same time.
the second thing: if you dont have "maccam" try plugging and unplugging output jack a few times and restarting until you have sound.
the problem still could be with the OSX 10.4.10 update / quicktime...or maybe even a hardware problem like others with macbooks were saying (with the red light), not sure.
people with macbooks and who have the red light on, say to use a paperclip to turn off the switch inside.
my mini does not have a red light on. i tried using a paperclip but it doesnt work.
hope this helps, beleive me i feel your pain!!!!
what good is a computer without sound?
extremely annoying problem that i hope apple looks into and fixes

• Premiere Elements 12 output problem

I am having problems outputting my project. Different errors messages.  One says transcoding error.  Another time it says export error.  Other times it crashes. And then the program won't even open.
Any suggestions?
bwatson9

Steve,
First, thank you for your prompt response.  This is the first time I have used Premiere Elements 12.  I don't seem to have a manual for the software.
The product was bought with my new computer.  I am using windows 8.1 (64-bit) with Intel Core i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz.  I have 12 GB of installed RAM.  I have 1TB hard drive of which this is the first project I done.
I have checked to make sure that I am getting all Windows and Microsoft Updates.  I even manually went to Windows Update and installed the optional updates.
The project is a 20 min. video using mostly photos and 2 small video clips.  The project is saved in its own folder.
When I go to the timeline in Expert view I do see an orange-yellow line above the timeline.  It runs the whole length of the project.
I understand from reading the FAQ's that each photo cannot be larger than 1000 x 750 pixels.  I will check that and reduce their size.  Is there anything else that I need to do?
Where can I find a manual?
Thanks,
bwatson9

A lot depends on a lot.
What operating system are you using? What processor do you have and how much RAM and how much free space is on your hard drive?
How long is your project? What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
Have you ensured that your project file is saved to its own folder, with no other project files in this folder?
When you add your video to your timeline in Expert view, do you see a yellow-orange line above the clips, along the top of the timeline? This indicates a mismatch between project settings and video specs.
If you are on a Windows computer, have you set up your computer to get both Windows and Microsoft Updates -- and have you manually gone to Windows Update and ensured you have even the optional updates that don't install automatically?
When did you last run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter?

• Graphic output problems in most programs - triangles ...

- often at scrolling in the Finder
- it appears spontaniously and dissappers/flicker if mouse is moving ...
- in some programs it is permanent for example 3D Coat
- different often and strong in different programs - in some there is no problem (5% - for example ZBrush)
- Mountain Lion does not fix it - only some changes - for example Quicktime (not Fullscreen) a big triangle in the down left
- little greeen/red pionts, like defect Pixels, in little groups are appearing too! - Photoshop, Final Cut Video Output...

A screenshot give you a copy of what is actually sitting in the screen buffer.
So this is not an "output" problem. That stuff has been messed up in the screen buffer.
to draw the mouse cursor, the area around the pointer must be re-constructed. That is why moving the mouse cursor seems to "repair" it.

• Print Output problem in ECC6

Hi Friends,
I am getting print output problem in ECC6.
In VF03 I am giving issue output for invoice printing. Whenever I am presseing issue output one screen is coming for selecting output type. I have selected one output type and I pressed print preview then in print preview one item and corresponding amounts it is showing properly for the first time. But the problem is after the print preview if I come back and again if i press print preview button values are not getting refreshed and same item is repeated for twice and the amounts are also getting added. Again for the third time if i come back and again if i press print preview one more item is getting repeated and the amounts are also getting added which should not suppose to happen.
What could be the problem and how to resolve it?

Use code tags to post codes --
CODE
will display asCODEOr click the CODE button and paste your code between the {code} tags that appear.
You are passing 3 parameters -- a null, a String and an int -- to the JOptionPane#showMessageDialog method. In the [_API_|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/javax/swing/JOptionPane.html], do you find a variant of this method that accepts these three parameters?

• Geforce 6800 Ultra - output only video to TV

I just bought a new Geforce 6800 Ultra and I'm a little confused about the settings for TV output via the s-video cable. Is it possible to have only the video I'm watching zoomed full screen on the TV? Currently I'm only able to get the desktop shown on the TV but not the video only.
I'm asking this because I used to have Matrox Parhelia 128 which had this function and I liked to watch all the DVD's and other video from my tv.
Thank you for your help!

I'm still confused about the TV-problem.
When I switch to TV mode I can watch videos from TV but when I return I have to put all the resolutions and screen adjustments back in the settings. It's really frustrating to do it every time.
Does anyone know a workaround for this?

• Ultra 10 problems

ok this is a add on from "ultra 10 not displaying anything on monitor"
Ive got the problem down to being either the motherboard or the power unit..
Ive got it to this because when i managed to continue installing solaris 10 i recieved a post message saying:
power on self test failed cause: dump_async_error
Now im gessing this is some kinda power failure. when solaris 10 finished it automatically reboted my machine however after that i cant get anything ie monitor display, posting etc.. The machine powers on the fans spin and the keyboard bleeps but then nothing else..
it doesnt sound like the hard drive powers up nor the cd player.. what makes me wonder is it the motherboard due to everything being connected to it.. i also read that someone had a similar problem and changed the motherboard and it fixed it .
does anyone now what that error is trying to tell me because i want to get the rite part to fix the machine..

null

A solitary blip during a reboot cycle is usually something to be ignored.
The lack of output to your monitor only suggests that output is being redirected
to the serial console port. You will need to connect to that to see if anything is happening.
I cannot remember what you may or may not have done in the earlier forum thread, with the hardware.
Power it all down and open the case.
Remove the cpu hold-down bar and gently remove the cpu.
Make sure that all 300 pins are nice and straight and gently reinstall the cpu.
Remove all RAM and then reinstall them to their same slots.
Remove any and all adapter cards and wire harnesses, one by one,
and reinstall them right back to where they were.
This remove/replace action will re-seat and burnish all electrical contact points.
Then expect to start all over again with the installation of the OS.

Things I have tried to fix it.
To start I was using the onboard sound with the latest drive.Thinking this might be the problem I turned off onboard sound. I bought a Typhoon 5.1 card same problems. So I bought a soundblaster live 5.1 card downloaded lastest drive same problems. just bought a soundblaster Audigy Gamer same problems. I tested my friends 2 year old soundblaster live 5.1 Gamer card and it seems to work just fine.
I have read both the KT4 Unofficial FAQ and the trouble shooting guide nothing in the two worked. I installed the lastest Via 4 in 1,video drivers and the lastest windows updates. I have tried moving all my pci cards in to each slot.I even went into my BIOS and swaped the  IRQs for the PCI slots around.Only thing I have not tried is a bucket of water and a 20 pound Sldge. I have posted at 3 o4  other places no one can seem to find the problem PLEASE HELP I think I might be losing my mind.

fdisk formated and reinstaled windows 3 times. fresh install each time i installed a sound card. so I dont think lingering drivers is the problem which also means dx9 has been installed fresh each time.also I have been dealing with this for nearly a month and I am at a loss.

• DVI output problem

Hello,
I have a 1.83Ghz Core 2 Duo Mini that will not output any video over DVI.
I have connected the Mini via DVI to three known-good monitors (Apple 20in Cinema Display, Gateway 22in HD LCD, and an Acer 22in LCD) and can't get any video output. I get a startup chime, drive noise and a power light, but no video.
I have attempted to start the Mini in safe mode while connected to the Cinema Display but still can't get any video. I've reset the PRAM and PMU and that didn't help.
The Mini will display video using the Apple-supplied DVI-to-VGA adapter when connected to the Acer and Gateway displays.
When I took the Mini to the authorized service center, they said they couldn't replicate the problem. So I'm a bit stumped. Has anyone here had similar problems and/or solutions?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

I once had a similar problem. For testing I did not bother to screw in the retaining screws on the plug into the monitor. Could hve kicked myself when, after screwing them in, it worked fine.

• Mini-DVI TV Output Problem

I recently purchased the Mini-DVI to Video Adapter for my Macbook at an 'authorized' Mac reseller here in Seoul, South Korea (we also use NTSC here). When I got home I turned off my mac, hooked everything up, turned on the TV and then turned on the Mac, and then clicked 'Detect Displays'.
But the Mac doesn't correctly detect the TV. In the display menu it gives me display resolutions as if the TV were a seperate monitor (like 1600x1200, 60mhz, millions of colors). I tried every resolution option and the one that works best (and that it sets to after clicking 'Detect Displays') on the TV displays six small, black and white, distorted images of the screen scrolling vertically. Other resolutions do not display as well as that.
The TV itself is fine, I can hook other things into the composite inputs with no problem. For some reason the Macbook just won't output a signal my TV will understand. Is there a way to manually tell it what resolution to output? Did I just buy a faulty adapter? Would the composite cord itself make any difference?
Please help! Thanks.

One last try to get some help...
Can someone tell me what Resolution options are available in the Display menu when the Macbook correctly detects a TV? Does it just say PAL / NTSC with overscan options? Thanks.

• Report fonts mapping and PDF output problem(Easten European languages)

Hi experts,
I have such a problem.
If i run oracle reports(10g) via reports builder all layouts looks fine.
When i run them in PDF format via application server - report text and numbers strech out off frames, also textfields and text itself becomes bigger in size.
Aplication server runs over windows OS.
Uifont.ali file looks:
[ PDF:Subset ]
Arial..Italic.Bold.. = "Arialbi.ttf"
Arial...Bold.. = "Arialbd.ttf"
Arial..Italic... = "Ariali.ttf"
Arial..Plain... = "Arial.ttf"
Arial..... = "Arial.ttf"
"Times New Roman"...Bold.. = "TIMESBD.TTF"
"Times New Roman"..Italic... = "TIMESI.TTF"
"Times New Roman"..... = "TIMES.TTF"
I think the problem is with Lithuanian(baltic) letters in the text. If i do not map fonts in uifont.ali file i get PDF report without the
lithuanian alphabet letters, but in this case it looks fine(The same as in report builder)
After fonts mapping, i get my lithuanian alphabet letters, but text and numbers strech out off frames, changes the size and etc.
I put the example of my report uotput:

• Mac Mini HDMI Output Problem w/ LG L246WP

NOTE: This appears to be unrelated to the "screen flickering" that has been noted previously.
I'm using a fresh new Mac Mini 2012 with an LG L246WP LCD monitor. The monitor has HDMI, VGA and Component video inputs.
When I attach the monitor to the Mini DisplayPort output, using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI cable, the display functions properly at all resolutions - including the native 1920 x 1200 resolution that I use it at normally. All resolutions are clearly displayed in the "Displays" System Preferences pane. The display looks perfect, functions properly.
When I attach the monitor to the HDMI port using an HDMI cable, the display does not fucntion properly. The display is shifted about 80-100 pixels to the left and about 20 pixels up, creating black bars on the bottom and right sides. Because of this, a large portion of the display is not visible including the menu bar and most of the left side. Additionally, the settings are reduced to "Best for Display" or "Scaled", with resolution options under "Scaled".
This is not acceptable. I had planned on simply using the Mini DisplayPort output as a workaround, since I already have the DVI adapter from an old setup, but I need to use Thunderbolt to access external hard drives for rapid data transfer. One of my Thunderbolt accessories does not have two ports, so I can't simply add the Mini DisplayPort adapter to a chain. The HDMI port needs to function properly with my monitor.
It's important to note that this monitor has functioned properly with many other comptuers running OS X, Windows and various Linux flavors and it hasn't ever done this before. I've tried several different HDMI cables, ruling that out as a problem. I've tried the HDMI to DVI adapter that ships with the Mac Mini 2012 along with two different DVI to HDMI adapters, ruling that out as a problem. I tried attaching several HDMI devices (game consoles, DVD players, etc) and they all function properly, ruling out an HDMI issue as a problem. The monitor functions properly when attached through the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, so it's not a problem with the monitor. I've reset the PRAM already and the installation of OS X 10.8.1 is stock with no modifications or migrated data. I've tried the suggestions on the HDMI FAQ (although there's no "underscan" option available in Displays)
I tried to call AppleCare and after describing the problem I got disconnected with no callback. I started another ticket, described the problem, discussed the previous disconnection, was assured that I'd be called back if disconnected, and haven't heard back in two hours. So I started to dig into the problem in earnest.
This gets pretty technical.
After substantial research, it appears that this issue is related to the EDID that the monitor sends to the computer and, crucially, the way that the driver responds to it. For some reason, the HDMI port is recognizing the monitor as a CEA device instead of a monitor. As a result, it's restricting the monitor's available resolution to the native resolution  that the CEA 681 Series Extension describes ("Best for Display") and all other resolutions (including 1920 x 1200) are only available as "scaled". For some reason that I can't discern, all resolutions (even the 1080i and 1080p options) have similar deformities.
I've attempted to fix this by placing an appropriate override file in /System/Library/Displays/Overrides with an edied EDID removing the CEA-enable flag from byte 127 but, even after a reboot, the OS still insists that it's a CEA device and it won't allow me to force it to recognize the monitor as a 1920 x 1200 LCD Monitor.
How did I come to this conclusion and develop the fix? A nearly identical problem description showed up on the following website, with details on how this user fixed the issue:
http://byuu.org/articles/computing/edid
They used a convoluted process that involved dismantling the monitor and flashing the EDID on the monitor itself. It fixed their problem. I'd prefer not to go through that process just because one computer has a problem with it. Frankly, I'd prefer if the new Mac Mini performed properly in the first place.
TL;DR: The Mac Mini 2012 doesn't work right with the LG L246WP through the HDMI output. Everything else works fine with it. This is very uncool. It's most likely to be an issue with the driver for the Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU that are bundled with OS X 10.8.1. The Mac Mini 2012 won't update to 10.8.2 (yet), so I can't test it.
Anyone have any other ideas? Anyone else using a Mac Mini 2012 (or 2011) with an LG L246WP monitor? Anything simple I've missed?

Problem Resolved. But it was complicated. And a huge pain in the rear.
TL;DR: I flashed the EDID as described here. This is not recommended for the weary. Ideally, Apple should release an update OS X that will include the updated Intel HD Graphics 4000 drivers that utilize the CEA flag properly.
Here's the detailed version. As mentioned above, this isn't recommended for the weary. An improper (or interrupted) EDID flash can have seriously unpredictable effects on a monitor's performance.
Step 1: Get a Windows PC set up with a floppy drive and find a floppy disk. Use this system to format the floppy as a MS-DOS Boot Disk and copy over the "ddcw" program described at the aformentioned link.
This took awhile, but I was able to cobble together a temporary frankensystem with parts I had laying around. In installed XP and formatted the disk with XP's format tool.
Step 2: Grab EDID data from the monitor, modify it to disable CEA mode at bit 127 and make sure bit 128, the checksum, is appropriate.
This also took awhile. Several graphics cards I tried could not read or write EDID data. I ended up swapping AGP cards in my frankenstein box until I found one that worked - a generic GeForce4 4200.
Once the EDID data was written to the floppy, I edited the text file containing the EDID data to change the last two hex octets from "01 33" to "00 34" (00, to disable bit 127, and 34 is 33 + 1, which satisfies the checksum) and formatted the text file to match the sample included in the EDID_Write.zip file. Your mileage may vary - make sure the checks.
Step 3: Write EDID data to the monitor.
The link above mentioned three options: Easy (monitor's EDID is unprotected - write away!), Hard (monitor's EDID is protected - use service mode to attempt a fix), and Very Hard (monitor's EDID is protected, hardware modification is required).
Luckily my LG246WP simply needed to be put into service mode as described at the link above (menu + power) and once started up in service mode, I simply enabled "Aging Mode" (whatever that means) and attempted a DDCW write of the updated data.
Step 4: Profit!
After doing this, I powered off the monitor and powered it back on with the Mac Mini attached. The display functions PERFECTLY with HDMI out, just as it does using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
