Unable to connect without specifying port number

I have a strange situation on the client side.  While connecting to sqlserver remotely, and when the instance is set up on a non-default port (not 1433), I am unable to establish a connection unless I specify the port number.  This might seem normal
at first, but when my colleagues establish a remote connection (I am in an office) they do not need to specify a port number.  I've seen other questions posted on the forum related to the port number, but the difference is that our DB configuration works
for everyone except myself, thus it seems like a client side issue.
For example, "dbserver\instancename" works for everyone else, but fails for me unless I specify "dbserver\instancename,PortNum".  This is true through SQL management studio, through code, or through anything.
So my question is, what should I look for on my machine as the culprit?  At first glance, there is not much different between my machine and the others.  We're all on Win 7, we use active directory, and we all seem to belong to the same groups
(give or take).  My machine has much more installed in the way of dev tools (visual studio 2013, all of the dotnet frameworks, etc).  The DB is SQL 2005.
I have no access to the DB server, nor will the DBAs help me troubleshoot--they claim it's a client side problem.  So I am hoping I can isolate the problem on my end.  Thanks in advance.

>Do you have any firewall configured on your machine? Here's how the the initial handshake happens
- when you try to connect to SQL Server named instance without specifying a port number, SQL send the information about port number back on the UDP port 1434 and then the connection succeeds. If your UDP port 1434 on the client is closed, the client connection
wouldn't know which port to connect to and will fail.
I've disabled all antivirus software and stopped the windows firewall service.  No change.

  • Unable to connect to specified database

I am using Reports 6i as part of a iAS server.
From my application I can request a report and have it produced
and then try running it again and have it return the message
REP-0501 Unable to connect to specified database. There is no
pattern to when it works and when it doesn't. It does seem to
fail more when you change to a different report but it will also
happen if you try the same report.
I've checked the tnsnames file and it correctly has the database
    information.
It is also happening on a second server as well. Both are new
installs. Both iAS servers are NT connected to a Unix database.
Connection to the database is done by a name server and
connections using SQLPLUS have no problem.
Critical issue to user, any ideas?

  • How do setup the URL alias  without the port number 7001?

    Hi all,
I am using Weblogic 8.1 and have the following url http://solutions.company.com:7001/application.
I would like to simplify this URL by removing the port number to http://solutions.company.com/application.

  • ORA-12546 When connecting without specifying sid in connect string

I am currently having a difficult time connecting to an Oracle 9.2.0.4 database running on Red Hat Linux.
I can successfully connect to this database with sqlplus as oracle whether a sid name is included in the connect string or not. I can also successfully connect to the instance through jdbc with jsp pages. However when I try to connect as root without specifying the sid I get an ORA-12546 TNS: Permission denied. I also receive this error when attempting to connect to the instance through php scripts. Note that root can connect through sqlplus with no problem as long as the sid is included in the connect string. Also note that the oracle user can connect either way.
I turned on tracing and found that this error is occurring before it even gets to the listener as no log or trace entries are generated when the error occurs.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

did you set the parameter TWO_TASK ?

  • 404 page not found error without specifying port 8080 tomcat

    Hello,
We experienced an unexpected tomcat down, after restarting it no page is found if 8080 port isnt specified, in the past it wasnt needed.
What could be causing that behavior?
I went to the server.xml file and everything is in order:
        <!-- Define a non-SSL Coyote HTTP/1.1 Connector on port 8080 -->
        <Connector port="8080"
                   maxThreads="150" minSpareThreads="25" maxSpareThreads="75"
                   enableLookups="false" redirectPort="8443" acceptCount="100"
                   debug="0" connectionTimeout="20000"
                   disableUploadTimeout="true" />Thanks!

So, how can I force all requests to be responded by
the 8080 port without specifying it?If you don't specify the port on an HTTP URL then the request is sent to port 80. (This is part of the HTTP standard which is used on every computer in the world, it would be difficult for you to get that changed.) So applications listening to port 8080 will not hear those requests. I suppose you could run a port mapper or something but it would be more practical for you to just learn how things work instead of trying to bend them all out of shape to work the way you guessed they might work.
Should I comment the snippet for the 8080 port so 80
responds to all requests? If it were me I would change the attribute to read port="80", if you really want your server to listen at port 80. That element configures a whole lot of other properties and you don't want to just throw that configuration away.

When I click on the site in the address it brings up a window about page info with "General", Permission and security. Under technical details, it says "Connection not encrypted". It also says the website, odb.org does not support encryption for the page you are viewing. This is a normal website that I have visited many time using IE 9 but now with firefox i cannot go to the website because of some kind of encryption garbage. If i have this problem just trying to go to my home page then i will get rid of firefox.

If you type or paste http://odb.org/ in the location bar then that website should open.

  • RV320 SSL VPN web service unable to connect port 56000 56001...

I have recently installed a RV320 dual WAN small business router in order to use the SSL VPN functionality to allow secure access to our intranet pages which are hosted on a server inside our network. I have the latest firmware installed on the router.
With the firewall feature of the RV320 disabled - After logging in to the router remotely via the HTTPS interface, I am able to use the web-based services such as SSH and NetworkPls. However, when using the HTTP and HTTPS services I receive a web browser unable to connect error on port 56000, 1, 2, 3 ... This is regardless of whether I enter a URL or IP address on the network behind the router or on the internet.
Enabling the firewall feature of the RV320 gives a different result - when any IP or URL is entered into the box in the second image below, the router log-in page is loaded instead of the required site. I have pasted an extract from the log at the bottom of this post although it doesn't seem to contain any relevant information. As a separate issue, you will also notice that users connecting to the router brings up [HACK] SynFlooding Attack in error.
Can anyone explain why this is happening? Alternatively, does anyone have a guide for setting up a IPSec VPN with this router? There seems to be very little literature available for this model.
Thanks in advance for your help.

User ben login success from 221.142.25.181

After lots of trial and error, I was able to eliminate this problem.  What I wound up doing is defining the XE service again in the listener.ora file:
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =

          (SID_NAME = XE)
          (ORACLE_HOME = C:\ProgramData\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server)
I know that typically you should not have to do this, especially since I already had defined DEFAULT_SERIVCE_LISTENER = (XE) at the bottom of the listener.ora file.  Explicitly defining the XE service in the listener.ora file allows the listener to find it while the system is running under the Cisco AnyConnect VPN.  The only hiccup I found by doing this is that the XE service is discovered twice by the listener when the system is NOT running under the Cisco AnyConnect VPN.  It still works OK.  The listener just seems to ignore the repeated definition of the XE service (see output below):

  • Rewrite subdomain to another port number

    My problem:
I have two machines running Leopard Server with Web services on. Server1 serves out our main site on Port 80. Server2 will serve out an intranet of sorts on Port 8000, which will still be accessible from outside the office. Both use the same IP.
I would like http://example.com to show Server1's site, and http://intra.example.com to show Server2's site, without the port number 8000. DNS currently points both http://example.com and http://intra.example.com to the same external IP. Internally, each server has a different IP but the :8000 is still obviously needed to access Server2's site.
Simple mod_rewrites on Server1's Apache installation has NOT worked to set things up as I'd like. Here's what I have in the httpd.conf file:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} intra.example.com [NC]
    RewriteRule ^/.*$ http://example:8000/$1 [P,QSA,L]
This seems to do...nothing. I can still access Server2's site with anything.example.com:8000 and Server1's site with anything.example.com.
From what I can tell, Virtual Machines and Proxying wouldn't work for what I need, and the simple URL Aliases and Redirects don't seem sophisticated enough to handle a rewrite instead of a simple redirect.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Camelot,
Thanks for your response! To go through your suggestions one by one:
At first glance there are two errors in your RewriteRule setup
The first error in my RewriteRule was actually just a typo in the post, not in the actual rule on the server. At one point I also had the content grouping in my rule, and still no go (I've readded it and tested it to make sure).
In addition to that, what is missing from your post is a description of what happens when you do hit a http://intra.example.com/ URL - does it get served from the example.com server? does it generate an error message? is the connection dropped? That would also help.
http://intra.example.com serves the same thing as http://example.com, the site on Server1. Ditto for http://intra.example.com:8000 and http://example.com:8000; they both serve from Server2.
Other things to check include making sure that you have a site alias set for 'intra.example.com' in the 'example.com' configuration (or that you have a * there) - otherwise intra.example.com hits won't be processed by this virtual host (applies only if you have multiple virtual hosts configured on the server).
I have an * in the Server Aliases. I've also created a virtual host just for the subdomain, but that doesn't seem to work either so I've removed it.
You should also check that you have mod_proxy enabled on the server since this requires the proxy server support in the server.
mod_proxy is enabled, in addition to mod_rewrite.
Finally, if all the above doesn't help, try adding the following lines to your site's config file:
    RewriteLog /var/log/apache2/rewrite_log
    RewriteLogLevel 9
This will cause apache to log every rewrite request and show you what decisions it's making. 9 is the most verbose logging level, so lower the number if it's too much data, and make sure you remove the lines when you're done (you don't need to log this level of detail in a properly-running server).
Oddly enough, with this added, no rewrite_log is generated. It's not commented out, and I'm loading example.com and intra.example.com over and over! All that's there is access_log and error_log.
Any additional ideas? Perhaps editing httpd manually and then making additional changes via Server Admin is invalidating things? My URL aliases and redirects inside the Server Admin all work fine, which seems to imply that on some level, htaccess-style stuff seems to be working. And the fact that editing the httpd file doesn't work for either mod_rewrites OR the logging makes me think something else is wrong.
Additionally, I had originally placed an .htaccess file at the root of the web folder for some simple aliases and redirects on Server1, and oddly enough only one of the settings would resolve, and one exactly like it would not. The rest were completely ignored, until I recreated them in Server Admin. Now all those work, but this rewrite is too advanced for that part of Server Admin. Anyone know where the data store for the URL Aliases and Redirects resides, so that I may edit it directly in hopes of getting this thing working?

  • Error: Unable to connect JDev 10.1.3 to an OAS 10.1.2 mtier

    Hi,
I am trying to connect from my JDev 10.1.3.2 (Windows) to my OAS 10.1.2.0.2 (also Windows). When I am trying to test my new application server connection (after filling all the appropriated fields of connection with the same values as I already set up in my JDev 10.1.2 - where everything is going fine), I am receiving the error:
[####  DCM command did not complete successfully (-4)]
[####  HTTP connection failure: unknown port number or missing HTTP listener]
    Any clues?

    Hi Frank,
Thank you for your interest. And yes, I am using the correct port information (as I described before, the same parameters have been used in JDev 10.1.2, where everything is going fine)... Do you know where could I find more log information related with this error..

  • Awesome Bar: auto-complete suggestion does not remember port number from URL

I visit URLs with non-standard ports all the time such as http://localhost:8080.
When I start typing "localhost" into the address bar, the Awesome Bar suggests only "http://localhost" - i.e. WITHOUT the port 8080 - instead of suggesting the full URL including the port.
I never visit "localhost" without port 8080 so that entry should not even be in my history at all.
The Awesome Bar should always remember port numbers when making suggestions.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. Even with the URL bookmarked, typing "local" to begin the autocomplete still results in the URL being auto-completed without a port number.
Typing the name of the bookmark itself results in no auto-complete at all, meaning you still have to press the down arrow before hitting "return" to get to the correct URL. So you're back at square one.
