Unable to hibernate to disk

I installed and confugured Uswsusp according to the steps given at
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Suspend_to_Disk
When I fire the hibernate command ...it seems that it takes the memory dump on to the swap partition /dev/sda7.
But when I tried to resume it failed, the message displayed on the screen were like:
Invalid resume device swap:/dev/sda7
kinit: No resume Image , trying normal boot
And the normal boot is successful
Then I changed the the resume option in menu.lst to resume=/dev/sda7 instead of resume=swap:/dev/sda7
Now the messages while booting were
kinit: No resume Image , trying normal boot  .
And the normal boot is successful.
My etc/suspend.conf is
# major 10, minor 231.
snapshot device = /dev/snapshot
# Set this to whatever your suspend partition is.
# You will not need to provide a resume parameter to your
# kernel when using uswsusp, as this file will be used.
# This neccesitates using a initrd, though!
resume device =/dev/sda7
compress = y
#image size = 350000000
#suspend loglevel = 2
#compute checksum = y
#early writeout = y
# You can only change these if you modified Makefile.diff
# and have the requirements installed.
#splash = y
#encrypt = n
Can smbdy please help ?

What command are you using to hibernate...  The uswsusp command is s2disk which needs to be executed as root.  IF you're using KDE and Gnome to hibernate, and you just choose an option from the menu, it is possible that some other hibernate command is executed that way, which would produce the symptoms you describe.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to hibernate (and garbles the screen when it fails)

Hello,  I'm unable to hibernate (but I can suspend fine).
    When I run
    sudo systemctl hibernate
it will run the command, turn off the screen and come back all garbled (like static from a tv), with the computer still on but the processes stopped.
I followed all the instructions on the hibernation wiki.
I rebuilt grub adding the swap partition and added the resume hook to mkinitcpio.
My swap partition is 23.4GB and my ram is 16gb, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I've had a look at my xorg logs, run systemctl --all | grep errors with nothing, and nothing came up from the system journal ( I forgot the command as it was deleted from my bash history).
What other logs can I provide to help determine the error?
    Thanks
    edit:
It's been solved now, I believe an update to the kernel has done the trick. I can suspend to disk fine now.

    Still nothing unfortunately.
I masked alsa90 under /etc/pm/sleep.d to be -x. That was the only file out of the pm directories. (I only have it for KDE too).
I've also double checked my grub config to add resume, and mkinitcpio which has the resume hook.

  • HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC unable to boot recovery disk

HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC unable to boot recovery disk.  First when I power on my notebook it goes straight to the launch recovery or launch Windows normally screen.  When I choose start windows normally, it goes to the window screen and freeze.  When I try to launch the start-up with windows 7 start-up disk, the computer will not load the files.  When I tried to complete a hard drive test, it failed with a failure ID 9UXNXA-55E65V-XD003G-60XR03.
I'm looking for a solution, can someone help?

    Hi:
It sounds like you need to purchase a new hard drive for your notebook, and reinstall the operating system with your recovery disks.
When a HDD fails a diagnostic test, it normally means it is done for.

  • Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged

I was experiencing a problem with my Windows XP installation on Bootcamp. The Windows side kept restarting, and I could not find the reason, so I formatted with the Windows XP disc and tried to re-install it, but it didn't work. I forget the exact error as to why. So I went back to the Mac side and re-formatted the partition sing Bootcamp, and now when I try to re-install the Windows XP on the Bootcamp partition, I get the error:
Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged
What can I do? I don't understand, because this disk has worked before and I am on the mac side right now, so the actual disk does not appear to be damaged. What can I do?

Do a full format as it will check for errors and mark bad clusters if it finds any (full format = quick + chkdsk /x ), but only create one OS partition e.g like 30GB or something , this will be plenty enough for the os ,instead of the whole drive . Will save you time .
Wait with partitioning the rest of the drive as an extra partition until the OS is installed using diskmanagement .
Also make sure sata-dma is enabled in bios .

By internal, I assume you're referring to your systems (boot) drive. Is it, by chance, a partitioned dive?
Also…although many people successfully use their systems drives as scratch disks, over time you'll have better results using a dedicated drive for your media.
    Good luck.

  • Unable to Create a Disk Image of Device

    Hello.
The MacIntosh is a Mac Mini w/1.83Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. The OS is Snow Leopard, 10.6.2. I am unable to create a disk image of the device "Macintosh HD".
    Here's my procedure:
    1) Reboot the Mac Mini from the Snow Leopard Install Disk
    2) Set Language and then load "Disk Utility"
    3) Select the Macintosh HD from Disk Utility
    4) Set "Create a New Image from Macintosh HD"
    5) Leave the settings as they are (type of disk image is "compressed" target repository is root home dir)
    6) Error message is "Unable to create Macintosh HD (error -61)"
    7) When I then try to create a blank disk image, once again, with root home as repository the error message is "Unable to create name.dmg (read-only) file system"
    Any suggestions how to fix?
    Thanks
    Mike

you can smb from terminal but it will not help you. you'll need to create a folder which will serve as the mount point first and where will you put it? you can not do it on the dvd. and you can not put it in the main drive itself. but why do you need to do it that way at all. there is no need to boot from the DVD period. boot normally and clone your hard drive to a remote disk image on an smb share using one of many backup programs that can do this. Superduper can do it. so can CCCloner.

    thanks for your prompt response.
I am aware of that we can't use any free spaces where the VM is installed.Hence the additional storage added to the server.
    1. Install VM Server on 80GB HD ( /dev/sdb)
    2. Later, i added 500GB to the storage ( no installation - just the disk ) ( /dev/sda)
Same configuration worked fine in 3.0, now i am not able to identified the additional disk which was added later with 3.2.1.

  • HT3275 "Unable to find backup disk" issue

I use an external USB device for Time Machine backups, and, until now, it has always worked perfectly.  However, today when I tried to backup my files, Time Machine sent me the message "Unable to find backup disk."
I went to the "Help" section of Time Machine and was advised to open "Time Machine Preferences," then open "Select Disk" and choose my external device from the list of "back-up disks" that would be shown.  This apparently would "re-set" my external back-up device and allow backing up to resume.
However, when I went to the "Select Disk" section of "Time Machine Preferences,"  my external device was not even listed as a choice (i.e., I can't select the device as the place for backing-up, because it's not listed).
NOTE:  My external device is (a) connected to my laptop (via USB port), (b) turned on & (c) not defective.  My wireless network is working just fine.
Also, when I tested Apple's back-up drive "re-set" advice by connecting a tiny thumb-drive to my laptop (via the same USB port I had used with my external device), the "Select Disk" section of "Time Machine Preferences" listed the thumb-drive as a potential back-up disk that could be selected.
So, why can't my external USB device be "found" by Time Machine (while my thumb-drive can)?  What can I do to fix this problem?
    Thanks!

Sounds like either the backups are corrupted, or there's a problem with the drive, port, or cable.
Try to repair the backups, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.

  • Unable to set scratch disk

I have just upgraded to Lion and have tried to use FCE for the first time with it.
I got an error message upon starting it
"Unable to set scratch disk. The selected directory is on write protected or non writeable media"
    Any ideas?
Also and I dont know if it is related, when I try to export to quicktime, there is no video in the exported quicktime file only video. There is video however when I tick make self contained movie.
It is a new problem and hasn't happened before going to Lion.

Most users using Lion have trouble of one kind or another.
Short answer is Lion is not suppoorted for FCE use.
Moving to FCP X is the only supported option at this time or roll back to Snow Leopard.

  • Unable to discover local disks in T5220

    According to http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35328_01/E35332/html/vmusg-storage-types.html#vmusg-storage-local
I should be able to use extra disks in a T5220 to store VMs:
Local storage consists of hard disks installed locally in your Oracle VM Server. In a default installation, Oracle VM Server will only use the first disk (/dev/sda), leaving other disks available for storage.
As long as no partition and data are present the device will be detected as a raw disk. The choice is yours to use the local disks either to provision logical storage volumes as disks for virtual machines or to install a storage repository. If you place a storage repository on the local disk, an OCFS2 file system is installed.
But I am unable to discover these disks using Oracle VM Manager 3.2.2.520, managing a host running Solaris 11.1 with latest version of VM Server for SPARC:
    # pkg list | grep ldom

    system/ldoms/ldomsmanager    3.0.0.4-0.175.1.9.0.4.0    i--
I suspect that it is because "partition and data are present" on the disk, but I don't know how to delete partitions with the format command, only change them to unassigned and zero length, and that didn't work:

I can't make slice 2 size zero, otherwise when I run label to write the changes I get an error.  Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?  Thanks!

The reason you can't do this, is that the currently shipping support for Oracle VM Manager on SPARC systems is only for NFS.  The paragraph you are quoting is from the base Oracle VM manual and that section applies to x86.  /dev/sda is a Linux convention, not Solaris, so it wouldn't apply here.
If you go to the Oracle VM Server for SPARC documentation at Oracle VM for SPARC Documentation  and then select View Library for Release 3.0 at
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37707_01/index.html
you will see a page with all the documents for the current release. Pick the "Oracle VM Manager 3.2: Quick Start Guide for Managing Oracle VM Server for SPARC" at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/ovm3-sparc-quick-start-guide-1900072.pdf
You are running the correct version of Solaris 11 and the logical domains manager, so you should be able to discover the server, networks, and file-based repositories, but you'll have to wait till a later release provides support for local disk, FC SAN, and iSCSI.  I hope this helps explain the situation.
