Unable to open alert log file

Hi Guys
I am using oracle 10.2.0.4.0 on windows 2003 64 . I am unable to open my alert log file. My alert log file opens in a notepad. I get the following error:
'C:\oracle\admin\efint\bdump\alert_efint.log file is too large for notepad. Use another editor to edit the file.'
I tried opening it with wordpad. It gives back 'Failed to open document error.'
My database is working but it wont let me open my alert file. I was able to open it yesterday but not today.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks in advance....
regards

Hi,
I recommend that you download tail for windows:
http://www.x64bitdownload.com/downloads/t-64-bit-tail4win-download-ljrvpdfr.html
This is the description:
Tail4Win is a real-time log monitor and viewer, is a windows port of the UNIX 'tail -f' command, it can be used to view the end of a growing file. By using Tail4Win system administrator can monitor log files of server applications in real-time, e.g. Apache's error.log and access.log, or IIS, Tomcat, Resin log files. And programmer can monitor application traces easy and quickly. Tail4win can display the last part of a large file quickly without loading the entire file. And it is a file viewer only, it makes no changes to log files. Main fetures: Monitor changes to files and display the changed lines in realtime. Monitor files of any size quickly, no need to load the entire file. Highlighting and filtering let you focus on important informations. Watch multiple files at same time. Real command line support, just like using Unix/Linux "tail" command. Capture and display OutputDebugString (Windows debugging API) output.

You are having problems on disks E\ and F\ - possibly hardware problems.
(Hopefully these disks are not network drives. If they are, your problem might be network contention. Network mounted drives are never a good idea for databases.)
If this is truly urgent, then I encourage you to use your Oracle Support contract to open a service request for assistance.

  • Error message: "Unable to open the physical file" when trying to attach AdventureWorks database

I have searched the internet and this forum and have not found an answer...
I am trying to install the AdventureWorks database into my single instance of MS SQL Server Express 2005.  I am logged into my machine as an administrator and logged into SQL Server 2005 express 'sa'.  I attempt to run the following script:
    exec sp_attach_db @dbname = N'AdventureWorks',
    @filename1 = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\AdventureWorks_Data.mdf',
    @filename2 = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\AdventureWorks_log.ldf'
The error message I get back is:
    Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 1
Unable to open the physical file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\AdventureWorks_Data.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".
The folder "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data" and all the files in it are read-write.  I am 100.0000% certain the files "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\AdventureWorks_Data.mdf" and "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\AdventureWorks_Log.ldf" exist!  They are the result of running the installation program AdventureWorksDB.msi, which I downloaded from: http://www.codeplex.com/MSFTDBProdSamples/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=4004.
What do I have to do to install the AdventureWorkds database????

    Hello,
To try to help you, please, could you give some more informations ?
    - the operating system (XP/Vista), the edition ( Pro/Home...) and the service pack
    - usually, the installer installs the both files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Sql Server\Samples. Is there any change in the location or have you moved the both files ?
    - could you check with the files explorer , that the 2 files are read-write and not read only( find one file, right-click on it, properties and in the 1st tabpage, you should see a checkbox read-only ( if checked , unchecke it ) ?
    - have you Sql Server Management Studio Express Edition ( at least SP1 ) ?
If no, download it and use it to attach
    in the object explorer,
click on your instance to expand it
    right click on databases
in the contextual menu, click on attach
in the new form, click on add
you arrive on a second form : find your file , click on it, and OK
it's the simplest way to attach ( the sp_-attach_db is complicated to type )
the error messages are sometimes more clear in SSMSEE than in Sqlcmd
Try also to attach ( thru SSMSEE or Sqlcmd but in using the windows authentification )
NB: i hope that you are not trying to attach AdventureWorks on a remote instance and on a remote computer ( it would explain access denied )
We are waiting for your feedback to try to help you more efficiently
    Have a nice day

  • Unable to open the XML files in Nakisa

    Hi Gurus,
We are unable to open certain XML files in Nakisa. They show up as encrypted in the notepad or fail to open using the XML Marker. The files in question are
    AppResources.xml
    LoginConfiguration_SAP_Standard
    LoginConfiguration_Anonymous
Purpose: We want to enable the SSO with the portal . We have checked the radio button but nakisa does not recognize the SSO ticket from the portal (Any folder in Nakisa where we need to place the Portal ticket?)
Also we want Nakisa to show the org chart for the logged in user. Luke had mentioned that some changes need to be made in the AppResources.xml (hope i correctly remember this) and we were looking to make these changes (rather try out.. any pointers please..?)
    Thanks and Regards,
    Arun E V

    Hi Arun,
These files are encrypted. If your organisation is a partner with Nakisa you can obtain the decrypter from them.
Portal SSO works without any configuration directly in the XML files. If you are getting an error stating that the Portal ticket cannot be interpreted then your configuration is not correct. In your URL iView you need to ensure the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) is used for the application URL. In the Administrator Console you need to ensure you enter the system details (Host, Sys Nr and Client) for the backend system which holds your SSO ticket for that Portal. You need to use FQDN here too.
There is additional security configuration that can be done in the XML files but SSO will still work with just the Administrator Console configuration.
    I hope that helps!
    Luke

This parameter, FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET ranges from 0 to 3600 seconds. It is important to specify your oracle version, since a similar issue is reported for the 10gR1 release.
The solution for it would be to increase the value to the suggested one in the alert.log file, but it could be completely out of range from the valid values, so set it to zero and let the oracle instance calculate the value. You can check the output at the V$INSTANCE_RECOVERY view at the columns TARGET_MTTR, and ESTIMATED_MTTR prior to proceeding with modificaiton.
On the other hand, I suggest you to read this metalink note
Kkjcre1p: Unable To Spawn Jobq Slave Process, Error 1089
         Doc ID:      Note:344275.1

    What's your oracle version?
If you are in 11g you can use adrci tool
1- set homes diag/rdbms/orawiss/ORAWISS/ : the rdbms home
2- show alert -P "MESSAGE_TEXT LIKE '%ORA-%'" -term : to find all the ORA-% errors in the alert file
3- show alert -P "MESSAGE_TEXT LIKE '%ORA-%' and originating_timestamp > systimestamp-51 " -term : to find all the ORA-% errors in the alert file during the last 51 days,
4- show alert -P "MESSAGE_TEXT LIKE '%ORA-%' and originating_timestamp > systimestamp-1/24 " -term : to find all the ORA-% errors in the alert file during the last hour,
5- show alert -P "MESSAGE_TEXT LIKE '%ORA-12012%' and originating_timestamp > systimestamp-1/24 " -term : to find the particular ORA-12012 error in the alert file during the last hour,

  • Message in alert log file during the startup of the DB

    Hi,
i have two instances, i have the same warning in the alert log file during the startup of the DB:
Oracle instance running on a system with low open file descriptor limit.
Tune your system to increase this limit to avoid severe performance degradation.
The db_files parameter was at 1024 for the two instances, i have set it to 300 for the first instance and 550 for second, the message for the first instance was droped(it's ok), but the message was there in the alert log for the second instance.
The two instance are on the same machine.
The number of the open file limit on the linux machine is equal to 1024.
I have shutdown the first instance (with db_files=300) the problem persits for the second instance (with db_files=550).
My question is how to determinate the right value of db_files parameter to avoid this message.
    Regards.

Increase the max number of open file on Linux or decrease db_files.
f the OS limit is 1024 db_files would have to be >= 472 for the message to be printed. t is printed if an instance is configured to access more datafiles than the OS-specific limit on the number of files that can be open in a single process. In this case the server will re-cycle the file descriptors.

  • How to read trace files alerted in the alert.log file

    Hello,
My alert.log file indicated multiple trace files to review. How to read these trace files to understand the cause of errors. Do I open the trace files with vi and do a search for 'ORA-' error. Are there tools to read and understand trace files. Thank you.

It depends what kind of trace file it is.
You can use vi or other text editing tool to open the trace file. The trace file usually provides more detailed information when you have ORA- errors in alert.log. It's also very helpful for Oracle support when troubleshooting.

  • Unable to open or create file ... Permission denied

I'm a new user of LC Designer ES.  After creating and saving a form, I made changes and now cannot save.  Error message in Log tab of Report palette says "PDF generated successfully.  Unable to open or create file [file name] Permission denied."  Any ideas why this would happen, and how to fix?
    Thanks for any help.

If the file is already opened in another application (like Acrobat or Reader) then you wodul not be able to save it as those apps put a lock on the form.

  • ORA.00600 Error in alert log file

    Hi all,
I'm using Enterprise Linux Red hat 5 OS and Oracle version 10.2.0.1.0
I checked alert log file, yesterday i got this error,
    * Errors in file /opt/oracle/admin/ssharp/udump/ssharp_ora_11162.trc:
    ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kksfbc-reparse-infinite-loop], [0xB7F8F6B4], [], [], [], [], [], []
    Fri Mar 11 19:44:51 2011
Memory Notification: Library Cache Object loaded into SGA
Heap size 3784K exceeds notification threshold (2048K) *
    how to solve this issue?
    thanks in advance

    Hello,
ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kksfbc-reparse-infinite-loop], [0xB7F8F6B4], [], [], [], [], [], []For this kind of error you should open a Service Request to My Oracle Support and, send them all the information you can (Alert log, trace files, ...).
More over, as you are in *10.2.0.1*, you may apply the latest patchset to the Database (10.2.0.4 / 10.2.0.5). Sometime, ORA-00600 may be due to a Bug. So, perhaps, by chance, applying a Patch set can help to solve this kind of issue.
Anyway, first of all, contact the Support.
    Hope this help.
    Best regards,
    Jean-Valentin

    Hai,
i received one warning in alert log file
Oracle instance running on a system with low open file descriptor limlit.
tune u r system to increase this limit to avaoid server performance degradation.
what we will take action regarding this?

Looks like the number of open files you have are near the current file descriptor limit. Verify that by doing the following:
    As root, issue the following:
    # ulimit -a | grep -i descriptorsFrom SQL*Plus, issue the following:
    SQL> show parameter db_files
