Unable to resolve single DNS name using root hints

Recently, we had reports that we could not internally resolve a certain .com domain name (discovered by undeliverable e-mails). A lookup using an external server (Google's in our case) resolves the .com name just fine.
Long ago, we had another DNS issue that lead us into implementing the following registry change:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click
New, click DWORD (32-bit) Value , and then add the following value:
Value: MaxCacheTtl
Data Type: DWORD
Data value: 0x2A300 (172800 in decimal = 2 days)
That is the only DNS change that we have made. We are using root hints, but temporarily added Google DNS as a forwarder so that we are able to resolve this .com address.
As a test, I did remove that registry entry, restarted the DNS service and tested again to no avail.
Any starting points?

According to your description, my understanding is that DNS server can’t resolve .com with its root hint.
Could you provide more information about the DNS architecture, such as numbers of DNS servers, their locations and relationships, system version, etc.
And please post the results of NSlookup test(use local DNS server, and then use Google's server to resolve name ) here.

This is the error message I get whenever I try to connect to my servers domain which I just set up earlier today. I have read through a bunch of other threads on the same error message
but each of them has had different solutions and none of them have helped me.
The one thing that I suspect is related to my problem is that I can't ping my domain on the W7 computer I'm trying to connect. I can ping the server, but not the domain. the domain
i'm using is set up like "domain.local" .
Other things that might be relevant.
I'v already set up user accounts and a computer under the Server 2012 active domain administrator settings.
I'v port forwarded ports 80 and 443 on the server.
The server has a static IPv4 IP adress. I haven't done anything with IPv6
The W7 computer has a dynamic IP adress, but I don't think it changes. I believe my router is set up to keep it constant, not 100% sure though.

Firstly, would you please let us know the outputs of ipconfig /all both of the clients and the DC.
Also, if you run nslookup FQDN of your DC from your clients, what will you receive?

DNS not querying/ recognizing/ resolving internal domain name using nslookup

I've setup a virtual lab for practice purpose on VMware 8 workstation.
I have already asked this question in vm community but still got no answers hence asking it here.
In my vmware workstation 8, for practice lab purpose my setup is as follows:-
1] Win 2k8R2 Enetrprise edi.vm as my DC with DNS & DHCP configured and working perfect. DNS is getting resolved internally via NSLOOKUP. Server has manual ip assigned...192.168.1.xx series.
2] Win xp vm as my Client and getting dhcp lease address from the above DC and also the DNS is getting resolved internally via NSLOOKUP.
Now that these two vms are communicating perfectly with each other, I thought about connecting them to my physical internet.
So, in the Virtual network editor, I added a Host-only type network named
VMnet 04 with Use local dhcp service checkbook Disabled and on each of these vms, in network adapter settings, selected specific virtual network and pointed it to
VMnet 04 in both vms.
Now, in both the vms, an additional network connection got added and hence was successfully able to browse internet from both vms.
Now the REAL problem:--
After the above configuration, when I do NSLOOKUP on the DC, the DNS doesnt resolves external sites on the internet.
I havent specified any kind of conditional forwarding etc.., its a simple DNS setup.
I want it to resolve to the internal domain and also be connected to the internet .
What setting do I need to do in DNS or in VM network?
I tried almost all types of settings in vm virtual network editor by specifying dns manually and so on but none worked.

Sorry my bad.... slight mistake in my question...Here is my corercted query--
After successfully connecting to the internet, when I do NSLOOKUP on the DC, the DNS doesnt resolve my internal domain/site but instead resolves external sites on the internet.
My computer FQDN is nri.wwe.com
Domain dns name is wwe.com
The above should get resolve internally but it searches on the internet.
This is how it should work
& it works perfect when I disable the other NAT network adapter (i.e. disable internet connectivity on my virtual DC)
C:\>nslookup nri.wwe.com

Address: 192.168.1.11
Name:    nri.wwe.com
Address: 192.168.1.11
But when I again enable internet connectivity, this it what happens.

And when I again nslookup, this is what I get,

Now this 192.168.12.2 is VM assigned DNS via VM Natting with its own DHCP. If we do it manually, none of the virtual machines can connect to the internet. So I cannot fiddle with it anymore as I have already that as well.

HomeHub is unable to resolve a DNS CNAME pointing ...

Just sent a technical compaint email off to BT to get an answer to this, but thought I would share here in case it helps anyone else.
Problem:
My HomeHub 3 is unable to resolve DNS queries where the DNS has a CNAME pointing to my WAN address. BT's and other public DNS servers resolve correctly - so the problem is not with the DNS record.
Background:
I have some devices at home which use DNS for name resolution. As a web developer, it is anoying that I have to use a different DNS name from inside my house to outside because of the above problem. It is also annoying that the only two workarounds I can think of are to a) buy a new (non-BT) router, or b) manually configure each device to not use the HomeHub for name resolution because BT have locked down the hub so I can't do it automatically.
Reproduce steps:
1) Set up a DNS record to point to your HH WAN address.
2) Set up a second DNS record that ponts to the first with a CNAME.
3) DNS queries to the first record succeed, queries to the second fail.
4) Set up a DNS record to a different IP address (try adding 1 to your WAN address)
5) Set up another CNAME to point to that address
6) DNS queries to both addresses succeed because the CNAME doesn't point to your WAN address

Unable to get Windows User Name using Oracle Forms 6i, Jinitiator 1.3.1.17

Requirement: Get Windows User Name using Oracle Web Forms 6i.
Tools Using: Windows NT, Oracle web forms 6i, Oracle 10g DB.
Description: I am using GetClientInfo JBean from otn.oracle.com, which gets windows user name, IP address and machine name. The demo I got from oracle web site uses Jinitiator version 1.1.7.18. While we are using the latest version Jinitiator 1.3.1.17. Due to this reason, I am unable to use Javakey which comes with older version but doesn't come with newer version, that's why I can't create the new JavaBean Java identity (PJC).
Please advise what to do. All environment variables are set everything is done, this is the only thing bothering me.
I went through the article 202768.1 from metalink, but on step 5, it gives an error keytool error: java.lang.Exception: Input not an X.509 Certificate.
Also, please let me know if there is any other workaround for this requirement.

Thanks for your kind reply. Actually there was a problem in creating a certificate, now it is okay with the same method. Certificate got imported on client and everything is ready.
Now, the problem is when I try to set Bean Area Implementation Class property with oracle.forms.demos.GetClientInfo, it gives an error FRM-13008 Cannot find JavaBean with name 'oracle.forms.demos.GetClientInfo'.
I went through the articles 1072329.6, 196824.1, and set ClassPath and Path variables with proper values. Also, I have copied jar file and signature file in forms60/java folder. I don't see any problems. Please let me know what I am doing wrong. My limitation is that I have to do all this in forms6i.
I searched forums on metalink and found out that someone installed Patch 15, and everything went okay for him. Do you think I should install Patch 15? if YES, how will I do it, I mean should I first uninstall my forms and then install patch15 or install the patch on my forms?

Resolve database service name using in SQL

Hi all!
My question is:
Is it possible to resolve database service name (e.g. TNS) from SQL only (without logging into the server with oracle user and execute tnsping)?
I'll give you a bit background about my question:
In DataGuard, if you query v$archive_dest, you can see the SERVICE NAME of the standby database in the STANDBY records. I would like to know what is the real server name and database instance of the standby database.
I don't want to login to the primary server with oracle user (let's say that I can not - it's a program really, not me...).
Let's also say that the only user I have is a read-only user to the database (with grants to all tables and views, but cannot execute privileged DBMS sys packages).
Running "SQL> host tnsping NAME" doesn't do the job, since this is only for SQL plus.
Doe's anyone have any idea? maybe v$ view that contains the TNS resolution (tried to find, no success)? maybe a tnsping alike command/function?

It is also handling the actual transport of the files. That name resolution is not passed back to the database.

Unable to resolve external DNS

Hi All,
I have recently set up an Xserve running OS X Server 10.3.4 with Network Home Directories. Everything works well and clients are able to log in and see their home directories. However, we use a web proxy server which relies on there being certain DNS in the clients Network Preference Pane so we can surf the web. In order for the home directories to work I have to have the IP of the server in the DNS of the client which results in the clients not being able to surf.
I believe the best way to achieve this is to get the Xserve to resolve external DNS but I can't figure out how to do this. Everywhere I search, the results seem to be for Tiger server!
It took me a while to get the home directories sorted and now I'm stumped - its driving me mad!
Any help would be much appreciated!

Those solutions will acheive the same effect. I like mine, simply because it doesn't require you to differentiate forwarding based on whether the lookup is a local or non-local zone (i.e. it's simpler).
To make a backup of your BIND config file, do something like:
'sudo cp /etc/named.conf /etc/named.conf.backup'
also a good idea to backup the contents of the '/var/named' folder once in a while, as Server Admin has been known to break it's own zone files from time to time.

Clients fail to resolve local DNS names, external names working fine

Hi there,
I've a strange issue with a couple of domain joined computers. Resolving internal and external host names works fine with nslookup. But clients loose AD connectivity because they can't resolve host names from the local DNS zones outside of nslookup.
Pinging IP addresses always works.
So far only notebook computers are affected. Desktop computers work fine. OS is Windows 7/8/8.1 for clients and Windows Server 2008 R2/2012 for AD DCs/DNS servers.
Example:
C:\>nslookup bl-sphv00
Server: bl-spdc01.bl.local
Address: 192.168.154.21
Name: bl-sphv00.bl.local
Address: 192.168.154.10
C:\>ping bl-sphv00

To get the client work again you just have to delete a few registry keys set by DirectAccess GPOs using this little batch:

Problems resolving .local DNS names

Hi all - I was having problems resolving machine.local type names, and I found this article:

This solution helped, but not completely.
I am on a Mac mini running 10.4.8PPC.
This unit is on a private IP network - 192.168.254.0/255.255.255.0
This unit is staticly addressed - 192.168.254.31
The network has a Windows Server 2003 machine doing DNS/DHCP
The network has a domain of mynetwork.local
I was experiencing the issue in this article:
dig server.mynetwork.local would complete and resolve to 192.168.254.11
ping server.mynetwork.local would fail to resolve.
Adding local to the search domain solved this issue as described in the article.
However, a new wrinkle arises.
I frequently connect to other networks via PPTP, many running SBS 2003, which uses a company.local DNS scheme.
Once connected, I can dig company.local names, but not mynetwork.local names (which I expected - as I am now resolving names through server.company.local). However, I can't ping company.local names, which prevents connection to the server.company.local OWA server, for example.
Any thoughts? I tried putting
mynetwork.local, company.local
in the search domains field, but no joy...

Sorry i did not understand your last reply. When you load all the core SCAs (put them into and folder) and then trigger the telnet option, the tool itself will take care of the dependencies and deploy the SCAs in the correct manner.
What was the error you were getting when you tried this?
You mentioned:

still they showing same as previous.
Does that mean that the deployment went fine, but still system info etc. shows old values? This is VERY strange. You can get the latest list from the configtool. Just check the attached screenshot for an example.
If this still shows old version, please run the force bootstrap once:
1)
Stop the j2ee server. Under cluster directory (/usr/sap/<SID>/J<nr>/cluster) rename server0 and subsequent nodes to ".old" respectively. The intention here is to create a backup of the existing files. Do not rename the bootstrap folder as this is needed for the sync process.
2)
Change bootstrap.properties file to ensure it has element.resynch=force as per SAP note 710663.
3)
Restart the J2EE Engine. The new server folders should be created during the bootstrapping and this is a time consuming process as all the contents of the server nodes will be syched with the DB content.
4)
Remove the element.resynch=force property or change it to element.resynch=detect which is the default setting.

DNS Forwarders say unable to resolve. Root Hints timeout during validation.

I have a Windows Server 2012 Essentials server that has been up and running for a year. The Server is the domain controller with the DNS server role installed. There is only one NIC card used on the network. Today, DNS stopped working. The server and the
clients can access internet websites if IP addresses are used; otherwise, accessing websites fails. Looking at the DNS properties page on the Forwarders tab, I see that each DNS server listed (which are the DNS servers given to me by my ISP
provider) says <Unable to resolve>. When I saw that those addresses were not resolving, I added Open DNS IP addresses and I added google's DNS addresses in the DNS forwarders list but they too said <Unable to resolve>.
I can ping the Open DNS IP addresses, the google DNS IP addresses and the ISP provider's DNS IP addresses. NOTES: 1) I tried unchecking IPv6 on the DNS' server's Ethernet adapter properties; 2) I have done a flushdns; 3) I have verified that
my DNS services are running; 4) the first DNS on my server's Ethernet adapter properties is the IP address of the DNS server (which is 10.0.0.51) and the second is the loopback (127.0.0.1); 5) the power management on the NIC adapter is disabled; 6) nslookup
works for 8.8.8.8 but not for www.google.com.
I removed the Forwarders and tried to use just Root Hints. That didn't make any difference. I went back into DNS Manager->[DNS server name]->right-click properties->select Root Hints tab. I clicked on a.root-servers.net to edit. Under the Validated
column it says "a timeout occurred during validation". I clicked cancel to back out of everything I was doing.
As I mentioned, this was all working fine until this morning. Can someone tell my why the Forwarders are unable to resolve? An why the Root Hints timeout during validation?

It could be a firewall issue. Try to use public DNS server to resolve names,
nslookup
server
IP address of the public DNS server
www.microsoft.com
If timeout occurs, it means that firewall or some other similar device block the DNS traffic. Please disable the firewall and try again.
If issue persists, please try to restart the DNS service.
If it still doesn’t work after restarting the DNS services, please check if there is any warning or error in the event viewer of DNS servers.

I am trying to figure out a strategy to enable a single web application
based on WLS 4.5.1 (SP13) running on Linux to serve multiple DNS
names, with some specific pages to be transmitted using SSL.
While the JSP pages differ in colouring and screen layout (but not in
logic),
the entire EJB business logic is identical for all DNS names. So are the
servlets.
The application data to be presented to the user can easily be mapped,
and presently (with the application responding to a single DNS name)
it is cached using a JNDI tree. To minimize coding effort, and
to continue utilizing the present caching concept, only expanding it to
support
multiple similar "virtual" applications, I would prefer to
continue using a single WLS instance when making the application "generic".
But as a consequence of this, I could only present a single SSL certificate
to the user if I had WLS answer internet HTTP requests directly.
What would you think should be done to get the browsers
"display the closed padlock while in the order form" for multiple DNS names
served by this same application instance?
One approach might be to put Apache in front of WLS, and configure it
to serve multiple virtual hosts (one for each DNS name to be served,
encoding the differences between the request URLs somehow in the ServerPath
directive, and providing a separate SSL certificate for each of those
virtual
hosts).
Does this make sense to you? Any experience in this area? Which Apache
and WL modules should I be using - which combination
of mod_proxy, mod_ssl (by Apache), mod_wl, mod_wl_ssl[_raven] ?

Ruben, I can't help you with the specifics of the configuration but your
general strategy seems correct to me. WLS does not handle multiple certs
and one must front it with a Web server if multiple certs are required.

I'm receiving an error when creating a oracle.sql.STRUCT or ARRAY. the error is java.sql.SQLException: Fail to construct descriptor: Unable to resolve type "X.NAME".

When I run the code within JDeveloper it runs without any errors. When I deploy to 9iAS release 2 and try to run it there, I receive the error. Thanks for any help.

Think I found a solution,.. or at least stopped getting the error. I'm using oracle's OracleCallableStatement instead of the java.sql.CallableStatement. I'm also using a different app server. same version 9.0.2.0.0 I'd recommend applying the patches to anyone using this version. I've ran into some errors that have been patched. It's a long process though..

DNS Root Hints

hello guys, i had a windows 2012 and windows 2008 as DC's of course with DNS installed on both of them.
The two DC's uses root hints for DNS. (NO forwarder)
No changes made for over a year.
We have a hardware firewall, configured as DHCP.
The DNS IP on the DHCP, is pointing to the Windows box.
Out of the blue, the DNS just stop working and some websites doesn't display.
If I ping public DNS such as 8.8.8.8 it works fine i get good replies and the Win 7 clients and the Server box also indicates that the internet is up.
The internet is up, but the web pages does not display.
I restarted the DNS Service, but doesn't help and still some websites are not displayed.
What I did to remedy the problem is to put a public DNS on the DHCP. (of course this is not a good practice)
So the DNS settings got the 2 DC's IP and 1 public DNS.
I'm actually suspecting that the Hardware Firewall is going south since it's more than 8 years(I think could be more).
I had checked the DNS event logs, i found no issues.
Any ideas guys? What could be the real culprit on this case?

Hi cguan,
Please run "ipconfig /flushdns" on both of DNS server and client. Then run "dnscmd /clearcache" on the DNS server.
If it doesn't work, please try to run nslookup in debug mode,
nslookup
set d2
domain name of the website
If it is possible, please post the result here.
If timeout occurs, please enable the DNS debug log. It may give some hints.

Prior to adding the Public IP in DHCP, i actually did the "ipconfig /flushdns" and also clearing the DNS cache using the GUI.
But after doing it, some website still doesn't open.
I'm not sure whether it's the hardware firewall is going south.
Why I said this, we have a wireless outside the firewall. When the private LAN was having issue, the wireless outside the firewall was working fine.
The network right now, is okay. But the only thing; there is a public IP on the DHCP on every client. Which should not be there as part of best practice.
I will try the debug mode, and update this post.

I am using ADF, I can reproduce in a testcase, but I need time.
If you want, I can cut and paste the jspx page.
However, I have a panelStretchLayout: on top facet I have the master table, while in the center facet I have the detail table.
I have a query component to filtering data of the master table.
I have this problem doing this:
1) create a new record on master table.
2) create some records on detail table (sons of the record of the master table just created).
3) clicking on "find" of the query component.
I have tried to do a master-detail with the HR connection using Departments table (master) and Employee (detail). When I try to delete a departments, it does not work, because I have to delete the employees first, while in my case I want to delete the master and the detail in cascade.
