Problems resolving .local DNS names

Hi all - I was having problems resolving machine.local type names, and I found this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107800
This solution helped, but not completely.
I am on a Mac mini running 10.4.8PPC.
This unit is on a private IP network - 192.168.254.0/255.255.255.0
This unit is staticly addressed - 192.168.254.31
The network has a Windows Server 2003 machine doing DNS/DHCP
The network has a domain of mynetwork.local
I was experiencing the issue in this article:
dig server.mynetwork.local would complete and resolve to 192.168.254.11
ping server.mynetwork.local would fail to resolve.
Adding local to the search domain solved this issue as described in the article.
However, a new wrinkle arises.
I frequently connect to other networks via PPTP, many running SBS 2003, which uses a company.local DNS scheme.
Once connected, I can dig company.local names, but not mynetwork.local names (which I expected - as I am now resolving names through server.company.local). However, I can't ping company.local names, which prevents connection to the server.company.local OWA server, for example.
Any thoughts? I tried putting
mynetwork.local, company.local
in the search domains field, but no joy...
Thanks for wading through this long question - appreciate any replies...

  • Clients fail to resolve local DNS names, external names working fine

    Hi there,
    I've a strange issue with a couple of domain joined computers. Resolving internal and external host names works fine with nslookup. But clients loose AD connectivity because they can't resolve host names from the local DNS zones outside of nslookup.
    Pinging IP addresses always works.
    So far only notebook computers are affected. Desktop computers work fine. OS is Windows 7/8/8.1 for clients and Windows Server 2008 R2/2012 for AD DCs/DNS servers.
    Example:
    C:\>nslookup bl-sphv00
    Server:  bl-spdc01.bl.local

    Hi there,
    a Microsoft support guy send me a solution earlier posted under
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/f49b8398-d923-4e7e-86e7-78094113c091/problems-with-dns-and-ad?forum=winservergen
    To get the client work again you just have to delete a few registry keys set by DirectAccess GPOs using this little batch:
    @echo off
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DNSClient\DnsPolicyConfig" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator\CorporateConnectivity" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Tcpip" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityAssistant\DTEs" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityAssistant\Probes" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters" /v SMB1NATCompatibilityLevel /f
    Unfortunately this breaks the clients DirectAccess configuration and leaves me without a real solution. Found some hints here:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/tomshinder/archive/2010/03/13/uag-directaccess-group-policy-assignment-make-sure-the-right-policies-are-applied.aspx
    So my question is now: How do i have to edit the wizard generated DirectAccess GPOs correctly?
    Anyone any idea?

  • An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed.

    "An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed."
    This is the error message I get whenever I try to connect to my servers domain which I just set up earlier today. I have read through a bunch of other threads on the same error message
    but each of them has had different solutions and none of them have helped me.
    The one thing that I suspect is related to my problem is that I can't ping my domain on the W7 computer I'm trying to connect. I can ping the server, but not the domain. the domain
    i'm using is set up like "domain.local" .
    Other things that might be relevant.
    I'v already set up user accounts and a computer under the Server 2012 active domain administrator settings.
    I'v port forwarded ports 80 and 443 on the server.
    The server has a static IPv4 IP adress. I haven't done anything with IPv6
    The W7 computer has a dynamic IP adress, but I don't think it changes. I believe my router is set up to keep it constant, not 100% sure though.
    Thanks for any help with this, I'm pretty much out of ideas on this.

    Hi ZachPrinz,
    Firstly, would you please let us know the outputs of ipconfig /all both of the clients and the DC.
    Also, if you run nslookup FQDN of your DC from your clients, what will you receive?
    Meanwhile, regarding the issue, we can refer to
    the similar thread and see how it works.

  • Unable to resolve single DNS name using root hints

    Recently, we had reports that we could not internally resolve a certain .com domain name (discovered by undeliverable e-mails).  A lookup using an external server (Google's in our case) resolves the .com name just fine.
    Long ago, we had another DNS issue that lead us into implementing the following registry change:
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/968372?wa=wsignin1.0
    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
    2. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters
    3. On the Edit menu, click
    New, click DWORD (32-bit) Value , and then add the following value:
    Value: MaxCacheTtl
    Data Type: DWORD
    Data value: 0x2A300  (172800 in decimal = 2 days)
    That is the only DNS change that we have made.  We are using root hints, but temporarily added Google DNS as a forwarder so that we are able to resolve this .com address.
    As a test, I did remove that registry entry, restarted the DNS service and tested again to no avail.
    Any starting points?

    Hi,
    According to your description, my understanding is that DNS server can’t resolve .com with its root hint.
    Could you provide more information about the DNS architecture, such as numbers of DNS servers, their locations and relationships, system version, etc.
    And please post the results of NSlookup test(use local DNS server, and then use Google's server to resolve name ) here.
    Best Regards,
    Eve Wang

  • Problems with local DNS after 10.6.8

    Have a Snow Leopard server that's been running quite well. After (I think) the 10.6.8 update, I've encountered a really weird error regarding dns - the internal DNS doesn't recognize the top level DNS domain (companyname.net), so internally we can't see the site. Externally though, it's fine. Additionally, after about an hour or so, the local DNS entries seem to just stop working and it *seems* to crash, even though Open Directory still works fine, as do the external mail ips and website.
    My DNS/web aliases have been working great for years now and are set up as the following.
    10.6.8 Server: macpro.companyname.net
    DNS zone: companyname.net
    companyname.net alias to macpro.companyname.net.
    www alias to macpro.companyname.net.
    Web Admin is set up as the following:
    Hostname: companyname.net
    Web server aliases: companyname.net, www.companyname.net
    Everything had been working fine until the 10.6.8 update. The website would redirect both companyname.net and www.companyname.net to companyname.net. Users on the local LAN see the local IP, externally see the external public IP.
    But now, it's as if the DNS record for companyname.net LOCALLY doesn't exist. I can't ping it at all from local machines. I'm not sure what the deal is, and I also can't figure out where the look in the logs for assistance. I see entries that say so there's some sort of rebooting going on, but I'm again, not sure why. Any help would be great appreciated! I've restarted, done tons of cache reloads, deleted and readded entries - but as of now, still nothing.

    Lastly, I've been pinging the heck out of example.net. I've found that the server itself and Snow Leopard clients ping the correct internal address, but Lion clients (and iOS devices, oddly enough) return that it can't find the host.

  • Resolving local domain name and nameserver address

    Hi,
    Is there any way to get the local domain name (on Windows it would be NT domain name and on Unix based platform it is DNS server's domain name) and local DNS server address ?
    Thanks,
    Rohit

    import java.net.*;
    try
       InetAddress ip = InetAddress.getLocalHost();
       String fqdn = InetAddress.getCanonicalHostName();
       int firstDot = fqdn.indexOf(".");
       String domain = fqdn.substring(firstDot+1);
       System.out.println("domain: "+domain);

  • Problem with local SAP name inside ABAP webservice

    Hi all,
    I've created a simple webservice in our SAP development machine, with the normal steps (create RFC, then generated the webservice inside SE38, then activated webservice in SOAMANAGER).
    The problem is that when I call the webservice from outside (external .NET program) I get the following error:
    There was no endpoint listening at http://srv.devm2.local:8004/sap/bc/srt/rfc/sap/zwebservice1/060/zwebservice1/zwebservice1 that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details.
    I believe this problem is related somehow with the internal srv.devm2.local SAP name that is unknown from outside.
    If I open the WSDL definition, in the end I can find this internal srv.devm2.local reference of our SAP DEV server:
    </wsdl:binding>
    <wsdl:service name="ZWEBSERVICE1Service">
    <wsdl:port name="zwebservice1" binding="tns:zwebservice1">
    <soap:address location="http://srv.devm2.local:8004/sap/bc/srt/rfc/sap/zwebservice1/030/zwebservice1/zwebservice1"/>
    </wsdl:port>
    </wsdl:service>
    </wsdl:definitions>
    How can I force the webservice to map our external IP address, instead of the internal local name srv.devm2.local?
    Or there it another problem that I'm not aware of?
    Thanks all!
    jc

    I meant changing it in the calling application (external .NET). Can you not download the wsdl to your pc and change it there manually and then use this local wsdl in your external application to call the webservice ?
    It is just to see if the sap name is the problem. If that is the problem then it should work if you replace the name with the IP address.
    If this works then maybe basis need to adjust some settings (firewall ?, access authorizations ?)
    Also are you sure the service is activated in SOAMANAGER ? Sometimes when you save it stays inactive and it does not give you a clear error message, easy to overlook.
    And try to call the webservice with SOAPUI and the wsdl from soamanager. Does that work ? When I test with SOAPUI I always use the http port and don't forget to fill in user and password.
    If soapui call works, then the problem is with the external .NET application.

    Apple are bent on removing as much as possible from even what little was available in 5.6 utility.. so each update removes yet more options.. as for having telnet or ssh .. go wash out your mouth.. they are anathema to Apple total control of the environment.. I mean to say you might set something they didn't intend.

  • Possible to change DNS name... and how

    OK, working on an Advanced Server that was setup months ago. An active server used by a small workgroup. It was setup using server1.domain1.local DNS name and now would like to change it to server2.domain2.com Can this be done, if so how? It will have the same external and internal IP addresses.- Lewis

    Hi Lewis
    This has been discussed many times before. Use the changeip command. A search would reveal how to use it or you can simply consult the manual page for correct usage, man changeip.
    Alternatively you could consult the Admin Manual?

  • DNS not querying/ recognizing/ resolving internal domain name using nslookup

    I've setup a virtual lab for practice purpose on VMware 8 workstation.
    I have already asked this question in vm community but still got no answers hence asking it here.
    In my vmware workstation 8, for practice lab purpose my setup is as follows:-
    1] Win 2k8R2 Enetrprise edi.vm as my DC with DNS & DHCP configured and working perfect. DNS is getting resolved internally via NSLOOKUP. Server has manual ip assigned...192.168.1.xx series.
    2] Win xp vm as my Client and getting dhcp lease address from the above DC and also the DNS is getting resolved internally via NSLOOKUP.
    Now that these two vms are communicating perfectly with each other, I thought about connecting them to my physical internet.
    So, in the Virtual network editor, I added a Host-only type network named
    VMnet 04 with Use local dhcp service checkbook Disabled and on each of these vms, in network adapter settings, selected specific virtual network and pointed it to
    VMnet 04 in both vms.
    Now, in both the vms, an additional network connection got added and hence was successfully able to browse internet from both vms.
    Now the REAL problem:--
    After the above configuration, when I do NSLOOKUP on the DC, the DNS doesnt resolves external sites on the internet.
    I havent specified any kind of conditional forwarding etc.., its a simple DNS setup.
    I want it to resolve to the internal domain and also be connected to the internet .
    What setting do I need to do in DNS or in VM network?
    I tried almost all types of settings in vm virtual network editor by specifying dns manually and so on but none worked.

    Sorry my bad.... slight mistake in my question...Here is my corercted query--
    After successfully connecting to the internet, when I do NSLOOKUP on the DC, the DNS doesnt resolve my internal domain/site but instead resolves external sites on the internet.
    My computer FQDN is nri.wwe.com
    Domain dns name is wwe.com
    The above should get resolve internally but it searches on the internet.
    This is how it should work
    & it works perfect when I disable the other NAT network adapter (i.e. disable internet connectivity on my virtual DC)
    C:\>nslookup nri.wwe.com
    Server:  nri.wwe.com
    Address:  192.168.1.11
    Name:    nri.wwe.com
    Address:  192.168.1.11
    But when I again enable internet connectivity, this it what happens.
    C:\nslookup www.wwe.com
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    Server:  UnKnown
    Address:  192.168.12.2

    Non-authoritative answer:

    Name:    www.wwe.com.nsatc.net
    Address:  64.152.0.124
    Aliases:  www.wwe.com
    And when I again nslookup, this is what I get,
    C:\>nslookup www.wwe.com
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    Server:  UnKnown
    Address:  192.168.12.2
    DNS request timed out.

    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    *** Request to UnKnown timed-out
    Now this 192.168.12.2 is VM assigned DNS via VM Natting with its own DHCP. If we do it manually, none of the virtual machines can connect to the internet. So I cannot fiddle with it anymore as I have already that as well.

  • DNS names don't resolve properly

    I have an AirPort Extreme I am using for my home router. No problems with it until I setup an unRaid NAS server for media. Now I always have problems with web based control of the unRaid because names won't resolve properly on my local network. Only IP addresses. I was able to work around this problem by editing the hosts files on the desktop computers on my network, but that's not possible with iPhones as far as I can tell. It looks like the real problem is the DNS server on the AirPort Extreme. Does anyone have any idea how I can correct this issue? I haven't been able to find any settings for the DNS server other than the WAN IP. Should I go ahead and spend a few bucks for Mavericks Server? I have a couple of machines I could run it on, just not sure how complicated it is to setup. I'm not an IT professional.

    And if I used one of my computers (MacPro probably) running Mavericks Server as a router would that work?
    I have not tried it.. usually a server will be able to handle a lot more complicated setup than a domestic router can.. the only issue is how much of the networking do you want the server to take over.
    Or if I configure the unraid to use the name brunnhilde.local?
    That should be added by default.
    Do a netstat scan from a computer on the network. That will show what shows up and what doesn't. By default Apple routers should be adding local to anything they supply a dhcp address to.
    You should not use fixed static IP in the unraid .. you should always use dhcp reservation in the router. Otherwise it is simply not going to appear or appear correctly in the arp table of the router.
    I'm not sure what other options are supported by airport other than IP?
    Sadly what you see is what there is.. there is no advanced access to the router cli or any such thing. Albeit I am working on it. I doubt you will like my solution. (soldering in a serial port). And a lot of the system commands are difficult to find and use. So this is not like a regular router at all.
    Rather than use Mavericks Server.. why not invest in a better router.. you can keep using the AE for wireless and switch purposes.

    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    Server:  UnKnown
    Address:  192.168.12.2
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.

  • DNS Name is not resolved.

    We have VPN 3005 Concentrator (4.7.1) and VPN client 5.0.3. We setup Split tunneling.
    When some user opens the application, sometimes the DNS name is resolved, sometimes it is not.
    When the DNS name is NOT resolved, we manually put in the IP address of the server. Then, the application is open.
    How do we make DNS resolve consistently?
    Thanks.

    You check to check the split-dns settings. Also can this local DNS server (split tunnelled) resolve those names even without the VPN?

  • How to resolve a host name from IP using JNDI/DNS service provider

    Hi
    I got two questions on JNDI/DNS service provider:
    1) How to resolve a host name when i got an IP
    I understand How I do it inverse.
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "dns://"+server+"/"+domain);
    DirContext ictx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    Attributes attrs1 = ictx.getAttributes(host, new String[] {"A"});
    2) This example above works when I specify the domain in the provider url.
    If I am not specifing a domain but only the dns server I got an NameNotFoundException.
    What should I do if I don't got the domain?
    get the availible domains and loop on them?

    Hi,
    if your DNS server supports that, you can do a reverse DNS lookup. This works as follows:
    String server = "your.dns.server";
    String domain = "in-addr.arpa";
    String ip = "4.3.2.1";
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "dns://" + server + "/" + domain);
    DirContext ictx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    Attributes attrs1 = ictx.getAttributes(ip, new String[] {"PTR"});1: Use the pseudo-domain in-addr.arpa
    2: Use the reverse IP address for lookup, i.e. if your host has 1.2.3.4, use 4.3.2.1!!
    3: Request the PTR attribute

  • A problem determining the JNDI Name of a local EJB with WL 8.1

    Hi,
    I created a very simple local EJB and deployed it with Weblogic8.1. When I test
    it in the Weblogic server admin page, I got the following message:
    "The EJB MyLocal has not been tested successfully. There was a problem determining
    the JNDI Name of the given bean."
    Can anyone help figure out the problem?
    Thanks
    Henry

    Does the ejb have a target server specified?
    Does the Ejb have a Jndi binding as specified in the <local-jndi-name></local-jndi-name>
    element of weblogic-ejb-jar.xml?
    thanks,
    Deepak
