Everything was fine. I can not start my MacBook Air with Maverick X.  It says ... unapproved caller securityagent may only be invoked by apple software.

I got this message "Unapproved Caller" for the first time in April 2014 on my MacBook Pro 13" early-2011. I was using Chrome and suddenly Chrome stopped working and all other things too. I have two drives, one SSD for the OS and one HDD for other things.
I formatted my main drive (SSD) twice or maybe three times, but still after couple of times the message came back and back and back... I was, as always, stubborn and thought it was the fault of my system, not of its wiring (read: SATA-cable). So sometimes booting my Macbook became a race/game against the clock in which I deleted the /var/folders/etc like some suggested. But the message came back as usual.
****, I DJ sometimes and just before a gig my Macbook just died on me... Had to reinstall the OS and I was very nervous... But eventually the OS reinstalled. Anyways...
Then, I formatted my HDD together with the SSD and installed Mac OS X Lion (had to do Internet Recovery) on my SSD. Ta da! Mac was working good . But, you would've guess it by now; Unapproved Caller came back. And after some time, my Macbook stopped booting at all! So I took it to the Apple Store in Amsterdam (Netherlands), to one of their not-so-Genius bars. The guy there hasn't see the message ever and his superiors neither. He tested my Macbook and the test said that my SSD was the problem!!! Mind you, I have a Windows PC and the SSD is a Samsung one. I checked its health via Samsung Magician and it said it was alright. So he said he couldn't take my Macbook for reparation. F*ckers. I knew there was nothing wrong with my Mac.
After a couple of days Disk Utility couldn't recognize my SSD anymore, only my HDD in the Opti-bay. ****** even more. So, I purchased a new SATA-cable, after reading all these problems regarding the "Unapproved Caller" message. I was very skeptical, but general opinion was that in Apple's batch of MacBook Pros of early-2011, there were problems with SATA-cables.
A couple of weeks ago I installed the new SATA-cable very securely and prayed that Internet Recovery should work. It worked! Now, I'm back up and running and just punching myself for the head that I hadn't purchased the SATA-cable much, much earlier.
I believe that the only way in which you could get rid of all issues, is by simply purchasing a new SATA-cable!!! I don't know any technical details, but now my Macbook is just working like it did before my issues.

    The error may well be caused by a hardware fault, but you should rule out cache corruption.
    Restart the computer in safe mode. Certain caches maintained by the system will be rebuilt.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    When the login screen appears, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • When I boot in safe or regular mode, I get this on my Macbook Pro with upgraded Mavrick System Unapproved caller. SecurityAgentmay only be invoked by Apple software.  I can't boot my computer.

    I suggest you call Apple Care. However, the following is the BEST I can remember what I did as intructed by Apple Tech Support. I have a Time Machine Backup external hard drive.
    Turn off computer
    Turn on and @ first sign of life, press and hold the Option button
    Follow the directions:
    Click: Repair disk
    Click: Repair Disk permissions
    Get out of the section then pick the reinstall
    Option reinstall
    If that did not work: it did not for mine:
    Do the same as above and click erase disk. If you have a Time Machine Back up, you can return you Mac back into working order w/your applications software, i.e. Word: mac 2008, Skype, etc.
    Unplug you external hard drive to eliminate any possible confusion.
    After an  erase disk when starting like above (hold option button down while booting) and doing a total install,
    Plug in your external drive with you Time Machine backups.
    Only check applications and only users. Uncheck other files… and computer …

    After I did this, my computer went back to normal. Takes about a day. Good luck. It isn't easy and there are no short cuts I know of but better than having to find an Apple Store or shipping your Mac in for a repair.

  • Unapproved caller Error on Startup Macbook pro 2011

    Hi All
    I recently clicked on system updates to install Mavricks 10.9.1 and it wouldnt download so I went to restart and try again but now I am getting this error.
    Here is what is happening,
    - Tried to update using app store, and got some error about not being able to download the update
    - Downloaded the update 10.9.1 from the apple support website and installed,
    - The install started then went to restart and did so no worries and it seemed that it didnt actually install as the computer was still saying 10.9
    - I decided it could be a permissions issue after a quick google so went >disk utiity> Check permissions followed by repair permissions
    - I then Restarted the computer to see if that would work and got the error "Unapproved caller. SecurityAgent may only be invoked by apple software."
    It seems odd that it would happen as im trying to update the system....
    There must be a work around of the "SecurityAgent" or something...
    Any help would be hugly appreciated.
    What I have tried so far...
    - Restart in safe mode - (seems to have the same issue as standard mode)
    - Started from the Mavricks backup disc using "option" and selecting the drive,
        This takes me to the screen with the option to reinstall etc etc,
    - I have read people reinstalling the system from scratch and still ending up with the same issue,
       For me it is very important to get the data off the HDD.

    It sounds like near the end of downloading Mavericks from the Mac App store the App store application quit unexpetedly. I have a few recommendations. First sign out of the Mac App store from the Store menu item.
    Sign out
    When you are finished using App Store, you can sign out to prevent anyone who can access your computer from making purchases using your Apple ID.
    Choose Store > Sign Out.

    New Mac Book Pro, one day old. trying to install CC to my new Mac. OSX Software  OS X 10.9.5 - Wells Fargo corporate image. I had no issues when installing CC on my previous laptop.

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro seemingly fried by Mavericks

    I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that I installed Mavericks onto a couple of days after general release. Everything was fine with it for a week or so, and then I started to notice a couple of weird errors crop up - I had an error come up on iTunes (I think the error code was 13024) and apps would start to not open. I thought it might need a restart, so I rebooted. On restart my computer then hung on the grey startup screen with the loading wheel spinning perenially. After 10 attempts, I tried every alternate startup key input I could think of to try and get my computer in action (Reset NVRAM, Safe Boot, etc.) The first one to 'work' was Startup Manager by pressing Option. I opened Recovery Mode and tried verifying disk permissions. This threw up a TON of errors. On repairing, they all gave a me Error-22. Repair Disk didn't work either. I then tried restarting again to see if anything had been changed to boot as usual. Again, nothing.
    Next I pressed D on startup to run an AHT. This actually successfully booted to my desktop and could explore Finder and see my files etc. No applications would open and Quick Look would not let me view any files. System Preferences would also not let me launch any preference panes. Pretty much anything I clicked yielded a dialog box with a message along the lines of "Unapproved caller: SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software."
    My whole system froze up on the rainbow wheel after I had to relaunch Finder from the Force Quit menu after testing Quick Look. Now when I boot into the Startup Manager neither my hard drive or the recovery drive are visible, and I only have the option to run Internet Recovery (where I am writing this post from). Normal startup just gives me a flashing folder icon with a question mark in it. I'm fairly sure Mavericks has totally fried my hard drive. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do about this or has had something similar happen to them?

    Dude i had same problem and also running same hardware as yours, i complety fomated my HDD and reinstalled everything from scratch. That did not help me, i thought it could be my HDD getting corrupted (reason why i thought that is becuase whenever "unapproved caller" showed up at same time everything on my HDD went read only mode). Hence i replaced HDD and put in new one, i dont get unapproved caller anymore.
    But there is still a problem somewhere, becuase my MBP freezes and HDD goes to read only mode, the only solution is to restart my mac sometimes multiple times.
    I think both these events are mutually exculsive.
    I have been troubled with this for about week now and very much gave up all hopes on my MBP.

  • Issue w/ HDD and wifi

    Mid 2012 - Macbook Pro - OS X Yosemite - 16 GB ram
    Initially my brothers macbook pro started to lag at start-up, then moving files to other folders wouldn't work, it would just give him some sort of error message. He was connected to wifi but then none of his browsers would be able to connect to the internet, he tried safari, chrome, and firefox, basically anything using internet would not be able to connect, even though other devices in the house were connecting fine to the internet. He tried restarting the macbook, trying to see maybe if it would fix the problem, but it showed some sort of debug text on the loading screen, after some time, he was able to somehow login. The problems didn't go away, he tried booting up in safe mode and it showed some sort of horizontal white lines on start up, saying it looked kinda glitchy.
    He took the macbook to the apple store and the tech did a wifi diagnostic, reset some of the start up preferences, he then tried restarting the computer but it was taking a long time. None of these things helped so the tech told him to go back home and back up the files and come back later on in the day.
    So my brother came to me, i tried backing up his stuff using time machine but it wouldn't recognize the external hard drive, after partitioning it (GUID) and erasing it properly. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but it wouldn't recognize the external device, it then gave me a message saying "Unapproved Caller SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple Software." I launched disk utilities to make sure the main hard drive was okay, by verifying the disk and all, it gave me the okay. I verified the disk permissions and repaired those as well for the hard drive (not external) just in case. I then restarted the macbook and it wouldn't start. So i booted the macbook in recovery mode, went into disk utilities and chose to verify the main hard drives disk again, it said it needed to be repaired, something about EPI partition, i repaired the disk but it wont boot up at all now. It just gets stuck on the start up screen, it wasn't even making the chiming sound, just showing the apple logo.
    After trying to boot up in safe mode to no avail, i then took out his hard drive, put it in an external enclosure and tried booting it up from there. It first recognized his name, but when i clicked on it, it wouldn't do anything. After doing this several times, i put his hard drive into my macbook and booted it up from there, it took me straight to a "reset password" menu. It keeps doing this. I tried putting the hard drive back into his macbook and it wouldn't even start up to the "reset password" menu. I also tried to put my HDD into his macbook to see if it works, and it booted up fine. However, my SSD wouldn't boot up from his macbook, it was showing the "flashing folder" icon, but my SSD was giving me trouble just a couple of days ago, it wasn't booting up from my computer either.
    Anyone know what i can do? I want to try and recover his files but disk utilities isn't even showing his disk space used. When i go into disk utilities the disk "Macintosh HD" is only showing two tabs; First Aid and Partition. The type it shows is "Logical Volume Group. The Disk status says "Online. It showing that Available is only 19 mb, even though he only used about 180 GB out of a 500Gb hard drive. The name of the partition is also "Macintosh HD," its showing the mount point as "not mounted" and format as "encrypted logical partition" with the capacity at 498GB. I feel like repairing the disk exacerbated the issue. Any ideas whats going on?

    I just went to disk utilities again, went to partition and clicked "unlock" because it was showing as locked for some reason, now it shows the files and correct available space. Any idea whats going on?

  • MacBook Pro Repeatedly Loads Purple & Teal Stripe, Gray, Light Blue, Bright Blue and Bright Blue Stripe Screens Instead of OS after Optical Drive Replacement by Apple (PICTURES INCLUDED)

    17 inch March 26-29 (order date – shipping date) 2011 MacBook Pro, 256GB Solid State Drive, 2.3 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, 1 processer, 4 Cores, 256 KB L2 Cache per core, 8 MB L3 Cache, 8 GB Memory (8GB 1333MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB), AMD Radeon HD 6750M Video Card, Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 512 MB total of VRAM. 110 GBs of free/unused disk space remaining.

    The issues described in the title continue even after I’ve reinstalled the operating system twice (Snow Leopard) and installed Mavericks (which is working fine and even faster). I’ve tried many commands to repair this.
    If anyone has experienced any of the symptoms above or below, your advice and response will be much appreciated as well as marked. These are the details:
    My Early 2011 MacBook Pro has had the typical blue screens, screen freezes and graphics issues since I bought it about three years ago but nothing like this and NEVER any load issues until about a month ago. That was when my superdrive replacement was put in.
    Since then my MacBook Pro will go into hard freezes or kernel panics. Then I’ll have to power it down manually and power it up manually. It’ll then refuse to load the OS until after multiple tries. It started out just 2 or 3, then 4 or 5, then 6-12, then 20. Now it takes over 30 boots to load the OS. These boot issues also occur even if it doesn’t freeze, i.e.: when I shut it down or restart it naturally (via the Apple menu, etc.).
    95% of the time it’ll load to a gray screen instead of the OS. 4% of the time it’ll load to a light blue screen. Then there are the others: the first time this happened it loaded to the striped purple and teal screen shown in the picture. This happened the next four times then intermittently for about 5 or so more times.
    It also loaded gray flickering screens. Flickering screens also occurred right before it froze and had to be manually powered down and up. Then it began to load regular gray and light blue screens and all flickering screens stopped. And then bright blue screens a couple times intermittently for a few days, sometimes with lines. Sometimes it’ll load to a blank/black screen as well. I’d reset the NVRAM and SMC but it still continued, happening multiple times a day, each time taking more and more hard shut downs and hard power ons to finally load the OS.
    Until I installed Mavericks, every time it finally loaded the OS Finder began indexing. After Mavericks this has occurred 95% of the time.
    After talking to Apple Support they had me do a NVRAM and SMC reset again over the phone. The MacBook Pro refused to load the entire time we were on the phone. After the call it got worse. It froze over 6 times that day and at worse took over 30 boots to load the OS.
    I finally had time to deal with it the next day when it froze again. After over 25 boots it loaded and I put in the Snow Leopard OS dvd and ran Disk Utility. I verified the hard drive and it said it was fine. Repaired the disk anyway and it gave this message at the end:
    “Updating boot support partitions for volume required”.
    Next I tried to start in safe mode and it just hung up for hours. Then started up in single mode and it loaded the OS. It then loaded normally for three times in a row. I reinstalled Snow Leopard. Everything loaded normally. I waited an hour or so and then I downloaded Mavericks. 5 or so hours later Mavericks was installed. Everything hardware wise was fine for a day and all software issues were easily fixable incompatibilities. My Mac was even faster with Mavericks. However, Photoshop did give a perhaps relevant message:
    “Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer’s website for the latest software.
    GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences.”
    (I have OpenGL enabled in Photoshop and it was already checked when this error occurred).
    Two days ago I went to Disk Utility to repair permissions while logged in to a non-admin account. Verified and repaired the disk, then verified permissions. Everything fine. After repairing permissions however, it gave a weird error box:
    "Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
    The box stayed “stuck” in the Disk Utility window. My MacBook Pro then failed to do anything. I manually powered it down and up. It loaded to a gray screen with the error message box again: "Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
    It then refused to load anything else but this message box on a gray screen even after rebooting it multiple times in safe, verbose and single modes and after resetting the NVRAM and SMC. I went online with an iPad and entered in the error and got some advice. I tried to run fsck and erase the /var/folders/ via single user mode but it still loaded to a gray screen with the error message. I just decided to skip to the end and Cmd-R loaded into recovery mode and reinstalled Mavericks again. That worked: the message has not appeared since.
    Some people have said this error is related to a hard drive cable failure. I know that this cable was tampered with during the optical drive replacement procedures because I watched them do it.
    Everything was fine for a day. Then yesterday my MacBook Pro froze while trying to open a VLC file. It took 12 boots to load the OS.  I tried single mode once and verbose mode once. 10 times it loaded to gray screens, even in those mode. A Safe boot lead to a bright blue screen. Finally reset the SMC and it loaded on the 12th time.
    Just five hours ago the same thing happened except it took over 30 boots to load the OS. Single, verbose and normal boots, NVRAM and SMC resets lead to gray screens.  Safe boots lead to bright blue screens with and without lines (see pictures). Finally loaded on a normal boot.
    I know I should have tried safe booting, verbose, single and recovery modes, disk utility, fsck and other command methods earlier this month but in the end, these methods have not solved the problem anymore than resetting the NVRAM or SMC.
    There seems to be conclusive evidence that it’s a hardware problem, stemming from last month, the FIRST AND ONLY time my MacBook Pro was opened up. Maybe it’s the hard drive cable, but it could also be the graphics card and/or logic board (something that’s always been defective on this MacBook Pro, in my opinion). Many early 2011 MacBook Pro owners have given evidence to the latter possibility online.
    The first time it started it seemed to stem from me using iPhoto and Photoshop a lot. I had both running continuously for about two weeks. This is another reason for suspecting the graphics card/logic board is at fault (in addition to three years of screen/graphics glitches). And since the card is soldered to the board and the board connected to the cable...I also have serious battery draining issues, something else that got bad after the Apple Superdrive repair. And the battery is connected to the board...
    Also, since downloading Mavericks, windows from every app get blurry/fuzzy when I scroll or zoom in. I have read that this is happening to a lot of folks though for various reasons.
    I guess it could always be the hard drive. I just don’t know. I’m taking it in to Apple, but can't right away because it’s not local.  I know they’ll be able to run a test on the hard drive. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem (especially the purple and teal striped screen) before they start poking around, possibly creating another problem that goes beyond my Apple Care Plan allotment.

  • SSD upgrade running terrible in main bay but fine in external case enclosure

    Hi,
    I'm having major issues trying to upgrade my Macbook Pro (13" mid-2012.  OS X 10.9.5) HD from standard apple installed Toshiba 750GB (which ran Maveriks) to a Samsung EVO 1TB SSD.  First I installed the SSD into the HD main bay, formatted as per apple support instructions (mac extended journaled) and installed Yosemite from a bootable USB, transferred documents from my time machine and reinstalled a variety of applications.  Seemed to work OK for a while but then many strange error messages began appearing.  The main one was "unapproved caller error- security agent may only be invoked by apple software.  I also had trouble coping files from my time machine (error message said the files couldn't be read or written), but when tested on another mac worked fine.  Safari kept freezing and when I tried to download apps said there was not enough disk space - there was plenty! When trying to open the apple store app the icon appeared in the dock briefly and then closed again. Over the preceding hour more and more of these errors appeared and eventually the computer was unusable, the screen went black with only the unauthorised caller error.  I decided to start again and this time install OS X from internet recovery.  Reformatted the drive as usual and booted with CMD + R.  First internet recovery didn't work- error apple couldn't create a recovery partition.  I used disk utility to verify the disk, Got - "the partition map needs to be repaired because there is a problem with the EFI system partitions file system".  Used "repair disk" to resolve this.  Tried the install again, failed again, can't remember the error message but it was different then the first.
    After searching the internet and not finding anything helpful I decided to try cloning my old HD onto the new SSD using carbon copier with SSD in external caddy.  Now works totally fine in the external caddy but as soon as I put it in the internal bay it again is very slow, gives funny errors such as "This operation can not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 50)".  Also keeps freezing, wont let me delete any apps/files and generally after about 10 mins becomes unusable and I have to restart.  It boots fine to start with though. 
    I previously had problems with the old HD freezing and being very very slow.  Apple replaced it about 8 months ago and it seems OK but is much slower then I would expect from an i7.   The only thing I have seen on forums is possible the SATA cable may be the problem???
    Anybody have a clue what is going on!?!??! Please help!  I would take it into the apple store as its still under warranty but I'm assuming they wont support it as its not one of their HDs and also I installed it myself.  Also macbook is still working fine with old HD.

    Almost certainly and what you did pretty much proves it. So you'd have to examine the SATA cable and connection to the logic board for damage. Then try replacing it. It's not exactly cheap so make sure before you buy:

  • Can't access one user on mac....one user is OK although it runs very slow..lots of beach ball action...tried using shift to access user and no use...I ran a disk check from good user and it checks out OK...what do I need to do

  • Unable to install OS X update 10.9.5 updates via App store on MBP running Mavericks

    Macbook Pro 13 (2012) 8GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD 2.9GHz Mavericks 10.9.4
    When I click on the Appstore I see an OS X Update 10.9.5, Command Line Tools, and Digital Camera RAW Compatibility update 5.07.  When I click Update for OS X Update 10.9.5 I get an error pop up (An error has occured  The file couldn't be save because you don't have permission.(513)
    So far I've gone into the Disk Utility and Repaired Disk Permissions.
    The console logs show the following

    Hi,
    I had this issue on my MBP and also still have it on my 2013 iMAC 27".  Log files were sent to Apple as I am working with a Sr Advisor on this issue.  The MBP seemed to have corrected the issue and installed 10.9.5 as a result of my having to reinstall the OS due to another error in SAFE MODE that comes up as "Unapproved Caller"  I also had the same error on my iMAC in safe mode whereas that error will not allow you to reboot so Apple had me reinstall the OS on the iMAC as well.  When it did (before I did the reinstall on the MBP), it only installed 10.9.4  I think the very next day Apple put 0.9.5 on the server thus the MBP uploading 10.9.5
    Caveat that Apple is looking into:
    1)  The Safe mode issue
    2)  Permission(513) error when trying to load 10.9.5 on my iMAC
    3) itunes lost 50% of my Album art.  No I am not going to right click every album lost (650 of them) as it takes too long.  I did however try a select all and it went throughout eh motions of downloading art for 1215 albums, but in the end the message stated not all artwork could be loaded.  When i looked at the detail it showed about 650 LP artwork not load that I now I ad before iTUNES  11.4
    4)  Apple not looking into it (not Apple SW), but you may also have a problem with Adobe PS or Acrobat Pro in that a window comes up when trying to launch the application that says License is no longer working for this product (might be a bit paraphrased).  This I fixed with the help of online Acrobat chat and also them doing a screen share to fix it.  Caveat:  If you have this issue the chat person might just send you a link.  The current link however only goes up to OS 10.7, but the rest of the instructions are what the screen share person did.  It took a long time to get this nailed down.
    Tomorrow I have a scheduled call with Apple for items 1,2 and 3 above.  If successful, I will try to come back and detail what was found out.

  • MacBook Pro Will Not Reboot

    My MacBook Pro is having trouble restarting. I originally opened the laptop to start working and noticed the comouter was acting strange (reconnecting to Wifi after turning it off, Chrome wasn't loading). I decided to reboot the computer to see if that wouls fix the lagging/behavior. After I turned it off and back on, a message about an unprovoked caller, security agent, and something about apple software. Everytime i clicked ok to get rid of the message it kept reappearing. I stumbled across this post Has unapproved caller on screen securityagent may only be invoked by apple software  and followed these directions:
    "Start on single user mode: Hit the Command and S keys at start-up
    Wait until the writing stops completely
    -At the line, type (after root): /sbin/fsck -fy (space after the k)
    Hit the ENTER key
    wait until it finishes and says "... appears to be OK"
    next, type: /sbin/mount -uw / (space after the t and after the w)
    Hit the ENTER key
    then type: rm -Rf /var/folders/*  (space after the m and the f)
    Hit the ENTER key
    Run FSCK again (I did, just in case,  but you may not have to):
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    Finally, type REBOOT, hit ENTER and wait until computer starts."
    I tried these but it didn't solve the problem. However now whenever I try to boot, a white/grey progress bar appears. When 1/4 of the bar is loaded, some text appears on the left corner of my screen for a bit then it restarts itself and a message appears saying the computer restarted due to some error, then restarts again with the progress bar stopping and words appearing. Its a constant loop unless I manually power it down.
    I read about starting it in safe mode, but holding down **** doesn't work for me. I am able to start it in single use mode, sometimes on recovery mode. I'm unsuccessful when holding down Command+Option+P+R. When I booted it in recovery mode I went to the disk utility option and clicked on something along the lines of Automatically Updating Permissions.

    This is what worked for me:
    Situation: After installing OS X 10.5.6, my mid 2007 MBP began to freeze, and eventually wouldn't reboot normally, nor in safe-mode or from a disk. Also tried resetting SMC and PRAM, still would boot from disk.
    Tried fysk, which worked for a while, but eventually the computer wouldn't reboot again.
    Connected it to another mac via firewire in target mode and erased all the data (yes I had a time machine back-up), but still wouldn't reboot from disk.
    Solution: A friend of mine tried resetting the PRAM again (command, Option P,R) but this time, he continued pressing the start button until the third chime (rather than the second as per apple instruction).
    All of a sudden we were able to reboot from disk, reintall the OS X 10.4.9 and then do a regular update to 10.5.6. My MBP has been working fine ever since.

  • Trash shows no content -- and startup disk is allegedly full

    Hello all,
    By the time you read this my Time Machine backup will have hopefully finished and I will have proceeded to erase my hard drive and reinstall the Mavericks with the internal malice of a waterboarder. 
    But I'd like to get some feedback from you supers-smarties out there on what could have happened. 
    I do support on Macs and so like a carpenter when I'm home, my MacBook Pro is always a work in progress.  One thing I didn't bother to do was clear out the content of the ~Keychain folder because I was getting that annoying "x service wants to use your login keychain -- enter your password" message.  I have root user enabled and I barely use it, but the root user password always seemed to neutralize those annoying windows when I first start up the MBP.  But aside from appeasing one said message, the MBP left me alone and everything was fine. 
    I recently experimented with moving my iTunes folder to the Users/Shared folder to see if 2 different users can access the same library.  I got a message that the test user that I set up didn't have permission to open iTunes to said iTunes folder...even after I changed the permissions of the folder to read & write for the test user specifically. 
    I also noticed that since moving that iTunes folder, my system started getting that spinning color wheel.  So I removed Caches from all libraries and Removed launch agents and daemons from the root library... and finally the contents of the ~Keychain folder.  Nothing drastic.  Just stuff that I knew my hard drive could reproduce. When I restarted, I was still getting the keychain messages AND when I went to empty the trash, there was NO content!  And when I tried to download a resume.docx from an email, I got a message that my startup drive was out of space.  Bullcrap.  Of 250 GB, the partition had 60 GB free. I can't even take a screen shot of the "Other details & Tags" portion of this post where I wrote "Los Lonely Boys are terrible" because my startup disk is so full.
    I first used Terminal to sudo empty the trash -- no improvement.  I then reinstalled Mavericks -- and when that didn't resolve the issue either, I figured I'd reindex spotlight.  Because the hard disk was allegedly almost full, it took 7 hours.  Issue persisted. I couldn't even start to Safe Mode.  I got a message saying "Unapproved Caller.  Securty Agen may only be infoked by Apple Software." (I'm using a legit copy of Mavericks, btw -- it's free, so what's the point of pirating?) So now, I'm erasing and migrating my User Data back on. 
    The only thing I can think of is either that I had a virus (in which case I'd like to know where in the filing system of my last Time Machine backup I could look for it) or I just user-errored that crap out of this thing. 
    I have no angry responses to your suggestions waiting as I don't get frustrated about computer matters anymore, plus, I'm fixing it one way or another with a computabotomy.  So any meditations and rhetorical answers are welcome and appreciated.  

    You can check out your hard drive size and available space in Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    Click on the named boot volume (Macintosh HD unless you've changed it) and look at the bottom of the pane to find the capacity and available space. What does it say?
    I haven't used it, but some people recommend WhatSize to find out what may be taking up hard drive space:
