Unbalanced Hierarchy

Hi,
I've a problem with an unbalanced hierarchy:
Level 1 : all values are available
Level 2 : null values possible
Level 3 : all values available
I've created an extra logical column to fill up the null values of level2.
When I create a report with the object from level 1 and try to drill down, I receive an error when the second level is null (but I've used the extra logical column for drill down)
When I create a report with objects from level 1 and level 2 the report is showed correctly and I'm able to further drill down to level 3 (even from values where the null is replaced)
So I was wondering why it doesn't work to drill down from the highest level?
Txs for your help.
KR,
A

A logical column is handeld after drilldown. Try puhsing your logic to the physical layer.

  • Unbalanced hierarchy deployment to Planning

    .Hi all
I’ve got the following problem with deployment of unbalanced hierarchy from EPMA to Planning application (deployment processes with no errors ):
In EPMA Dim library I have the following
    DIM1 (gen1)
    ....MBR1(gen2)
    ....MBR2(gen2)
    ........MBR3(gen3)
    ........MBR4(gen3)
    ....MBR5(gen2)
After deployment to planning I see only
    DIM1 (gen1)
    ....MBR1(gen2)
    ....MBR5(gen2)
Dimension is generic, all members and it itself has correct properties “valid for plan type”
    Best regards

    Hi valley,
Have you checked your planning log files after a deployment. It will sometimes show you errors that EPMA doesn't recognize as errors such as duplicate member aliases.

  • ASO - Unbalanced Hierarchy

"Hierarchy [hierarchy name] is unbalanced. Balancing it may improve performance"
I received this error message in the log file. Odd in that I have never seen performance related error messages before. Perhaps an ASO thing. The particular hierarchy that it mentioned is a ragged hierarchy, fewer than 30 members in it.
There are other dimensions in the ASO database that are unbalanced as well, it didn't mention them. Some of them larger, much larger.
Try to figure out the real effect of this or just other insight.

  • Uneven hierarchy

    Hi,
I have a requirement wherein I need to maintain a unbalanced hierarchy . The hierarchy is something like this
Global > Functional > Center > Workgroup > Sub-Workgroup (Optional) > Agents . So a workgroup can have sub-workgroups and then agents assigned to sub-workgroups or it can be workgroups > Agents . I need to provide drill down on reports and it should be seamless . How should I model my dimension and fact .Also we have facts at agent level . Please suggest .

  • Essbase Security filter in OBIEE 11.1.1.6 request

    Hello Experts
I have got a requirement whereby I need to apply Data Level Securityfor the Essbase sourced cube in OBIEE11g. But the issue is the dimension value where I need to apply security filter has 25K distinct values and is Unbalanced Hierarchy where the leaf members is distributed across differnet level . Actually it is ragged heirarchy in Cube which when imported in OBIEE becomes a Level Based Heirarchy where the leafs becomes shared across differnet level. Now the general OBIEE rule says - Create separate application groups for each lowest level dimension vales and apply security filters for each values respectively for each group and assign users in those groups.
    But the issue is :
    1. Here there are 25 K members in the dimesional value where I need to apply Data Level Security . So it is not possible to create 25K distinct group.
    2. The dimension which needs to be used for Data level security has Ragged Hierarchy where the lowest leaf (which would eb used in security filter) is shared across differnet levels. So there is no single column that I can select in RPD to apply security filter.
    Pls. suggest a solution.
Is there a way that I can source the Essbase Filters to work as Data Level security in OBIEE 11.1.1.6

You can upgrade to 11.1.1.7 and use Weblogic to assign security, then EAS to apply filters, and then OBIEE Enterprise Mgr to apply the application roles (i.e. via Essbase Filters). The gotcha is that you need to install OBIEE 11.1.1.7 and include the Essbase component as part of the install.
If you need more info let me know.

    Hi,
Hierarchies in general are essential structures for
navigation. Having characteristics and attributes in the
dimension and master data tables that are related in a
    sequence of parent-child relationships, obviously
involves hierarchies. But as the real world is sometimes
irregular, so are hierarchies. In BW there are essentially three possibilities for modeling hierarchies:
    •     as a hierarchy of characteristics within a dimension table
    •     as a hierarchy of attributes attached to a characteristic
    •     as an external hierarchy
    <b>Hierarchies within a Dimension</b>
A typical example of a hierarchy of this type is a time
hierarchy with levels such as millenium – century –
decade – year – month – day – hour etc. Another typical
example is a geographic hierarchy with levels such as
continent – country – state – region – city etc.
    <b>Hierarchies within a master data table of a characteristic</b>
This case is very similar to the one discussed in section
before. The difference is the increased flexibility (i.e.
realignment facilities) that comes with navigational
attributes. The hierarchy should still have a fixed
number of levels. However, changes to that hierarchy
(i.e. changes to attribute values) can be easily applied
to facts that are already loaded into a cube.
A typical example is the hierarchy of sales office –
sales group – sales person. This hierarchy has a fixed
number of levels but is frequently reorganized.
In terms of performance, this is the least attractive of the hierarchy modeling techniques.
    <b>External Hierarchies</b>
This is the ideal type if a hierarchy
    •     frequently changes
    •     has no fixed number of levels (sometimes referred to as a "ragged" or “unbalanced” hierarchy).
A typical example is a cost center hierarchy in which
several (sub-) cost centers belong to one cost center
which itself belong to another cost center and so on.
Such a hierarchy has no fixed number of levels as cost
centers usually correspond to departments or groups
within a company, which might be reorganized into new
subgroups. Thus new levels might be introduced, old ones
disappear. The hierarchy might be deeper at one end (due
to a deeper hierarchical organization) and shallower at
    the other.
Another major advantage of external hierarchies in
comparison to their alternatives is that an InfoObject
can have several such hierarchies and all these can be
used within the same cube. With the alternative
approaches the same effect could only be achieved through
    difficult work-arounds.

  • Unbalanced BW hierarchies in Webi

    Hi all.
I have an issue with interpreting unbalanced hierachies from BW in WebI.
The issue occurs when importing a SAP Bex Query, containing an Infoobject
bearing a hierarchy - in this case 0ORGUNIT. The problem occurs when trying to
show 0EMPLOYEE per Organizational Unit. The employee should only be
displayed when they are directly linked to the orgunit (as known from Bex) however in WebI all employes are shown at the highest levels in the hierarch. This obviously returns a long list of employees per hierachy level.
It ought to be possible only to show 0EMPLOYEE when they are directly
related to the Organizational Unit in the hierarchy.
I tried to built a hierarchy in the Universe, where the hierarchy
dimensions are listed chronologically, and placed 0employee at the
buttom. This didn't work either as the hierarch is unbalanced and not
all branches have the same amount of nodes.
Anyone know of a fix to this. I'm aware that WebI traditionally was intended to report on non-dimensional data however I would expect that there is a workaround for this issues or do I really have to move to an OLAP based client (Pioneer or Crystal) ??.
    Steps for Reconstruction
    1) Create a Bex query containing an Infoobject with a hierarchy
    2) Create a universe based on Bex Query
    3) In the universe create a hierarchy (Tools -> Hiearchy) based on the
hierarchy level dimensions from the infoobject

  • Parent Child Hierarchy in OBIEE 11G

    Hi All,
I am working on the parent child hierarchy in OBIEE 11g Source ESSBASE ..followed some of the blogs.
    http://www.rittmanmead.com/2010/07/obiee-11gr1-enhancements-to-essbase-support/
    I followed the following steps.
    1.Imported the Cubes from ESSBASE.
2.Selected Accounts Hirearchy and changed the Hierarchy type to Value.
3.Dragged the subject area to BMM and to Presentation.
4.Now when i checked the Account Hierarchy from in the dashboard its not drilling down.
If i change the Hierarchy type to Unbalanced ...then the Account hiearchy is working fine.
Is there is any settings or process i have to follow..inorder to implement the Value based Hierarchy in OBIEE 11G source ESSBASE.
    Thanks

So basically this means that if I build a parent child hierarchy on table A having the stucture like
    --David (Manager)
    -----James (Off1)
    --------Bill (Off2)
and in my sales fact table for let's say today, I have only rows for Bill (Off2) because he is the only officer who did the sales today. Now when I will join my fact table to parent child hierarchy table A I will NOT get any data ? because there is no James who is the parent of Bill. So obiee need to have parent pulled off in the data (ANCESTOR) to be able to roll up the child.(IS_LEAF = 1)
I testes this and if my data only contains only rows for Bill (or I limit on ROLE = Off2) then it won't show the hierarchy. The query which OBIEE fires is to look for either ANCESTOR_KEY = NULL OR (DISTANCE = 1 AND ANCESTOR KEY IN (Bill). Therefore it doesn't I am wondering then what is the use of builiding the parent child hierarchy when we need to pull in all the ancestors (like in this case James for bill and David for james) because in real scenarios there can be cases wherein we would want to filter the data based on other dimensions to which the parent child hierarchy joins ?

  • Essbase Cube Hierarchy Types in OBIEE 11g

    All,
Is there any documentation anywhere that explains what the different hierarchy types are for Essbase? I see the following listed, but am totally confused as to what each means and when it should be used.
    1. Fully balanced - Basically a flattened out equal level, no skips, hierarchy
    2. Unbalanced - ?
    3. Ragged Balanced - Isn't this an oxymoron?
    4. Network - ?
    5. Value - I'm seeing in blogs this is basically a Parent-Child; if so, what are 2 and 3 used for then since you can pick Ragged and Skipped Levels on the BMM layer?
At this point, I'm trying to test out the DMDemo cube from 9.3.3 and have the Fully balanced dims working fine. I'm putting my Accounts as Value, but it won't drill past the 2nd generation. I'm putting Products as Unbalanced, but I'm not sure if this is correct. When I put Products as Ragged balanced it works, but lets you expand past where there actually is a level to the maximum depth (giving you a blank box), which doesn't look pretty at all.
Any direction on this will be greatly appreciated as the first one is the only type I can get to work correctly.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Josh

    All,
After re-reading the documentation, I see that only Balanced, Unbalanced, and Value are supported for Essbase. I went ahead and setup the DMDemo out of our 11.1.1.3 environment the same way I did the 9.3.3 and here's what I found. Unbalanced works when setup exactly the same as it is in 9.3.3, I dont' see any issues with it. Value on the other hand, still doesn't seem to work correctly as I can still only drill down one level. I decided to switch Accounts to Unbalanced to see if it works and it appears my cube is working totally fine in OBIEE finally. To me, it seems as though it's just a version compatibility issue. Has anyone else ran into this so far? Also, I still don't understand what the difference is between Unbalanced and Value besides the fact that Value only gives Total and Detail levels on the hierarchy. Hopefully this helps someone else!
    Thanks,
    Josh

  • 0WBS_ELEMT hierarchy through MDX universe populating random values in WebI

    Hi Experts,
We are facing an issue in WebI 3.1, while creating a report on top of MDX universe with 0WBS_ELEMT hierarchy - coming from BEx query. All other hierarchies in other reports are working fine, but the issue seems to be particular to 0WBS_ELEMT hierarchy.
First of all, the WebI does not includes full project entries along with WBS hierarchy - this could be a limitation (2nd comment in https://cw.sdn.sap.com/cw/ideas/2084#comment-14280), and we found workaround as to display in seperate block.
Now the actual issue is, even hierarchy nodes of WBS element are not coming properly in the WebI. There are 5 nodes in universe (L00 to L04). We dragged all of them into the report and found that some nodes are missing. These are the L01 nodes which are not having any subordinate nodes.
Tried different combitions, and later found that if we are not keeping the nodes L02 to L04 in the query, all missing entries (in first report) are coming, but now some other nodes are getting dissapeared.
Can anyone tell the reason and/or solution for the issue. Is this the known issue with 0WBS_ELEMT hierarchy? If so, what SAP is recommending for this? This is really urgent, reply.

    Kshiteesh

    Hi Henry,
    Thanks for reply.
We are on BI 7.1 SP 07. We are having other hierarchies working in expected manner, but only WBS element hierarchy is having issue.
After posting to SDN, I saw some other posts on the forum and checked the note 1446246. This note points to others notes, and 2 notes (0001562173 - flattening unbalanced hierarchies & 1432162 - MDX Flattening problems when using hierarchies) which seems to be relevant.
It seems to be case of unbalanced hierarchies, but to be sure please suggest if we can go with these notes.

  • 0WBS_ELEMT Hierarchy - accessing a level 2 or 3 WBSE as a starting point.

    Hello,
I have a question related to using the 0WBS_ELEMT Hierarchy.  We are on BW 3.1 and I have built a query using the WBSE Hierarchy.
I have set a selection option for 0PROJECT, and
I have set a selection option for 0WBS_ELEMT (in properties, Hierarchy is active)
This is just a simple query with those two items as rows and one column to bring in 0AMOUNT as a column.
    <b>Example 1:</b>
When I input a Project Definition (0PROJECT) selection as SDVJ/2006/E/OUT (this is our WBS edit mask format).
I get a nice looking output, and I can drill down to the lowest level WBSE's in the hierarchy. (four or five levels deep)
In our hierarchy display we can see these levels:
    SDVJ/2006/E/OUT
    SDVJ/2006/E/OUT/U1
    SDVJ/2006/E/OUT/U2
    SDVJ/2006/E/OUT/U3
And we can drill into the level we wish to.
Now, I have been asked to do this kind of report, but to have the user start out at (for example) the Unit 2 level (SDVJ/2006/E/OUT/U2)
    <b>Example 2:</b>
I input the SDVJ/2006/E/OUT/U2 into the selection option for 0WBS_ELEMT, but I only get a couple of levels and I cannot get to the details that I can ge to by using my first example.
I am at a loss as to why this is happening to me.  I would appreciate any pointers, tips, or suggestions.
    Thanks.
    Lloyd
PS: I did a search of this message board but could not see one that provided me a fix.  If there is one that I missed, I apologize.
