Unbinding computers in 10.6...

This is probably nothing more than an annoyance, but is there a way to manually unbind client computers in 10.6? In 10.5 you could "Force Unbind", but there isn't really that option in 10.6.
I'm completely rebuilding my server (had some hold-over issues from 10.5 that ballooned into unusable in 10.6) and want to get rid of all the "client not in database" errors in my LDAP and Kerberos logs to more easily troubleshoot potential real issues.
When I go into the account settings on the client system, my server name is listed with a red dot. I choose to remove it, and then it list my server name with a green dot... If I try to remove it again, I get an error of "Unable to resolve host."
On a related note (and possibly even more to the point), is there a way I can send out an unbind command (or series of commands) via ARD to mass-unbind all of my clients easily?

Hi
One of the ways you can do this using ARD is to select all the workstations you're interested in and send this command from Terminal:
rm -Rv /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService
Run the command as root (sudo). It's also a good idea to get rid of any lingering MCX:
rm -Rv /Library/Managed\ Preferences
Again run the command as root. Finally restart all the workstations. Again you can easily do this from ARD's Manage Menu. Another command you could use is "dsconfigldap -remove". Consult the manual page "man dsconfigldap" for usage. My personal preference is the first option I've given.
On a side note you could consider utilizing the NetBoot Service and 'pushing' out a vanilla client image. Depending on what you want and as a rough guide a 20GB image for 30 Clients on a Gigabit Network should not take more than 90 minutes or so.

  • 10.6.7 mobile accounts automagically become admins

    Hi everyone,
    Not sure if this should go in the Mac OS X technologies community or not...
    We have a pretty large deployment of macs at my company. 10.5.8, 10.6.4, 10.6.5, and 10.6.7. All are bound to our 2003 AD via the built-in plugin. They are bound during imaging with Casper v8.1. I've found that with the 10.6.7 image that we are rolling out now, standard mobile accounts are loging in as admin accounts when bound directly to an custom OU in AD (i.e.: OU=Macintosh,OU=Computers,OU=Cleveland, etc). However when bound to the generic computers CN, these accounts do not log in as admins, and the computer record can then be moved to the custom OU without consequence. However yesterday we did have one computer (10.6.7) bound to the generic computers OU, logged in as a standard mobile account, restarted, logged in again as the same mobile account, but this time was an administrative account. Unbind and rebind seemed to fix it, but this worries me.
    The issue is also coming in when the pre-10.6.7 macs are upgraded to OS 10.6.7 (i.e.: 10.6.4 -> 10.6.7 via software update). Sometimes the existing mobile account is promoted to an admin. Unbinding and rebinding (to the generic Computers OU) puts the accounts back to standard.
    My question is has anyone experienced this before with 10.6.7 and how did you resolve it? We have 600 macs here that I can't have our techs running around and binding/unbinding computers, especially since we don't know if that's a permanent fix. It's worth noting that this was not a concern last year when we deployed new macs with OS 10.6.4, only deploying 10.6.7 and upgrading pre-10.6.4 computers to 10.6.4. (I'm assuming the upgrade to 10.6.7 will have this problem as well, though I'm not that far in testing).
    TIA! Please let me know if you need to see log files. I'm at a loss as to where to even begin to look.
    Andrew

    There are 3 groups in AD that are allowed to administer the macs: domain admins, enterprise admins, and ma support. None of these users are in those groups, and yes, all AD users, unless otherwise specified, are standard users. The "otherwise specified" part would mean they are a part of one of the aforementioned AD groups, myself for example. I am a member of the Mac Support group so I am an admin on any mac bound to the AD.

  • Managing Computers with 10.5 Server, but NOT managing Local accounts?

    I'll try my best to be clear here - I'm new to 10.5 Server and a functioning Open Directory environment! (formerly used 10.3 Server and never had the OD working).
    Environment:
    School (K-8), with old iMac G3's (10.3.9), eMacs (10.4.11) and a smattering of Mini's and iMacs (10.5.x).
    Server:
    10.5 Server, OpenDirectory and DNS appear to be working perfectly.
    User Accounts:
    Staff members have accounts for logging into sharepoints.
    No one (yet!) has server based home directories except a couple for testing.
    On each computer there is a "staff" account and a "student" account.
    These are LOCAL accounts, and do NOT have same-named accounts on the Server.
    I have bound client computers to the Server by OpenDirector
    dsconfigldap -v -f -a servername.domain.org -n configname -u diradmin -p adminpass
    Now comes the trouble;
    I have added the computers to the Workgroup Manager computers list.
    I have applied computer preference settings for the Energy Saver preferences ONLY. THey appear to have worked (managed computers slept/shut-down/started up according to the managed preference).
    NOW comes the real problem;
    The "staff" account on the managed computers is denying access to most applications on the computer!
    Note: this "Staff" account is local ONLY, and is NOT a server-hosted account.
    I have NOT tried to manage the computer preferences for applications on these computers.
    I can resolve the problem by unbinding the computer from the OD Server - but I'd prefer not to do that. I just got them all bound! And, it screws up my migration plan TOWARDS server-hosted home directories.
    I have tried managing application prefs for a COMPUTER, only to have both the STaff and Student account lose ALL of their local-only application managment settings (all of a sudden, Students can open terminal, grading programs, etc).
    I am obviously missing something!
    At this point, I'd like to back up... to NOT having my Server interfereing with the local accounts until I'm further along mapping out my migration from local-only accounts with file sharing access to Server hosted accounts and server managed preferences.
    (I will also admit I'm a bit confused about when to manage USER preferences, vs when to use managed COMPUTER preferences.).
    Tips appreciated!

    Your last question - using managed user vs. computer preferences got my attention. Mostly, I use Group managed preferences. I do use computer preferences for a laptop cart, other than that I use group preferences. Perhaps your situation calls for managing users, but using group preferences allows me to change the settings for a bunch of people all at once rather than changing settings for each user.
    In any event, check all the managed preferences for your computer level settings. And since you're using a 10.5 server, you have to check the settings for clients that are running 10.4 and earlier as well as the settings for 10.5 and later clients, as they are different.
    At the user level, if you have an OD account and a local account with the same name, the local account will determine what the user can do - I honestly don't know if managed computer prefs will override local settings, but you should look into it. This could be your problem.
    At the very least, you should avoid "testing" with systems that folks are using if you want to avoid the frustration that you are now encountering (speaking from experience i.e. similar mistakes, not preaching).

  • Why do some computers join OD and have a dollar sign ($) appended to the name?

    This question has been asked before here a few times with nobody being able to really definitively answer it (see: 2027636, 5979187, and 11144245).  It has been a couple of years and versions of OS X server and I am running into this same issue.  I am working on building an image to deploy Mavericks to our office computers and have been working on a script to set the hostname and join it to OD.  As a result I've been joining and unjoining this computer to our local OD server in an attempt to get the script working.  In the course of my troubleshooting, I've noticed that a number of computers in our domain have a $ appended to the name.  In fact, when I join my computer "office-test" it shows up in both workgroup manager and directory utility as 'workgroup-test$'.  If I remove the dollar sign from the end of the name in workgroup manager, the light next to the network server name goes from green to red on the client (in System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Login Options).  The reason this has been an issue for me is that the script attempts to populate some attributes and make the computer join groups on the server (so it can get the proper MCX settings), but since my script is using 'office-test' as the computer name and not 'office-test$', it is failing.  We do have other computers with the $ appended (mostly windows machines).  We also have hosts that don't have the $.  Does anyone know why this happens and how to prevent/correct/change it?
    This is what I'm trying to do:
    #set variables
    odserver=SERVER
    odbindacct=ACCOUNT
    odbindpass=PASS
    computername=office-test
    computerGroup=officegroup
    #set hostname
    scutil --set ComputerName ${computername}
    scutil --set LocalHostName ${computername}
    scutil --set HostName ${computername}.DOMAIN.TLD
    #join OD
    dsconfigldap -v -N -f -a ${odserver} -n ${odserver} -c ${computername} -u ${odbindacct -p ${odbindpass} -e
    #update attributes
    dscl -u ${odbindacct} -P ${odbindpass} /LDAPv3/${odserver} -merge /Computers/${computername} RealName ${computername}
    #get GUID
    GUID="$(/usr/bin/dscl -u ${odaccount} -p ${odpass} /LDAPv3/${odserver} -read /Computers/${computername} GeneratedUID | awk '{ print $2 }')"
    # Add to computergroup/list
    dscl -u "${odbindacct}" -P "${odbindpass}" /LDAPv3/${odserver} -merge /ComputerGroups/${computerGroup} GroupMembership ${computername}
    dscl -u "${odbindacct}" -P "${odbindpass}" /LDAPv3/${odserver} -merge /ComputerGroups/${computerGroup} GroupMembers "${GUID}"
    dscl -u "${odbindacct}" -P "${odbindpass}" /LDAPv3/${odserver} -merge /ComputerGroups/${computerGroup} Member ${computerid}
    dscl -u "${odbindacct}" -P "${odbindpass}" /LDAPv3/${odserver} -merge /ComputerLists/${computerGroup} Computers ${computername}
    In Directory Utility, I do see the following attributes/values set
    AppleMetaRecordName (cn=office-test$,cn=computers,dc=[HOST],dc=[DOMAIN],dc=[TLD])
    AuthenticationAuthority array ((;ApplePasswordServer;[HEX DATA]) (;Kerberosv5;;office-test$@[HOST].[DOMAIN].[TLD];[HOST].[DOMAIN].[TLD];))
    RealName: (office-test$)
    RecordName (office-test$)
    ENetAddress ([MAC ADDRESS])
    GeneratedUID ([UID])
    HardwareUUID ([UUID])

    I have observed the same issue on some 10.8.5 servers with 10.8.5 clients
    This behavior happens when authenticated bind have been enabled on server.
    Once authenticated, binded computers receive a ComputerName change during boot which append the dollar sign as appears in workgroup manager on server
    System logs on clients computers shows
    UserEventAgent receiving the $ name from _workstation._tcp.local (Workgroup Manager https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/qa/qa1312/_index.html)
    and mDNSResponder updating/enforcing Computer Name accordingly.
    Moreover, a binded computer will typically have « System Preferences ->> Sharing ->> Computer Name » option geyed out
    The workaround i found:
    1) moved  macosxodpolicy back from « authenticated bind required » to « enabled » and remove the $ sign from the end of each Computer name in workgroup manager.
    This allows to keep reliables computers names for mcx administration on workgroup manager but
    on the other hand, as you pointed out, this will also block network users on client computers.
    so on clients computers:
    2) Unbinded to clean the authentication entry and performed a simple bind —> without authenticated binding ( -f option) and admin/privileged network user (-l -u options)

  • Very Slow Network access for some computers

    This has me baffled, I'll try my best to explain.
    We have an xserve g5 conected to xserve RAID, the xserve has gigabit ethernet.
    All Client computers are also on Gigabit ethernet.
    Users are all on network homes on the Server.
    Most users are getting descent speeds, transfering a file from the RAID to their (network) desktop takes around 40 seconds for a 1Gb file.
    However two users noticed transfer was much slower, 20 mins for the same file.
    I've ruled out cable problems and hardware problems because if I transfer to the local computer harddrive the speed is up to around 1 minute.
    But I've also ruled out a problem with the user account, because if the same user logs onto another mac the speeds are around 40 seconds.
    I tried logging other users into the problem macs and all users drop to 20 minutes.
    The only thing I can thing it could be is some problem with how those computers are binding with the server, I tried unbinding and resetting up directory access but that made no difference.
    What else can I try other than re-installing?

    I went ahead and did a fresh install, but this did NOT fix the problem.. I really can't think what else I can do!
    Noticed in Network utility there are a lot of received errors when copying a file.
    I replaced all the cables but again I don't think its can be a hardware problem because transfer rates are fine from local harddrive to server, but very slow between 2 network disks (unusually slow, considering all other computers are fast transfering the same file to the same place) HELP!

    There is no FaceTime app for the iPhone if that's what you're asking.  FaceTime is accessible through your Contacts as one of the options in how to contact a person -- there is no standalone FaceTime app for iPhone.
    If you mean how to disable FaceTime, you can do that in Restrictions (Settings/General/Restrictions).

  • Can my family members share our purchases on separate computers with separate accounts?

    We have several apple products in our home and a  new one today.  Is it possible to use these products on different computers sharing all of our purhcases or do we need to stay on one computer on one account?  I know we can do that with the home sharing, but we don't all want all the same things, just some of the purchases.

    Use Find My Friends app instead.   Much easier to manage, and you won't need each other's id/pw's to do it.   They only need to accept your invitations and vice versa.

  • IOS Remote Desktop app and computers connected to SBS 2008--can't get it to work

    I can connect directly to the server without a remote resource in the IOS app.
    But I'd like to be able to connect to computers in the office like we can through RWW. RWW works fine, but not from my phone. (Yes I can connect to the server and take over computers from the phone but I don't want other people in the office to log
    into the server first!).
    I can never get the remote resources section in the app to connect. I usually get "Unable to locate any remote resources for the URL". error in the resources section. I've tried a simple "https://remote.domain.com", "https://remote.domain.com:987",
    etc.
    We have a self-signed certificate. I can't think of anything in the server setup that is anything other than normal.
    I can do direct connect using "Remote Desktop Connection" in windows 7. In the remote desktop server settings I just put remote.domain.com and "Ask for password (NTLM)" for the login method. Then on the general tab I have just the
    simple computer name and the domain\username. That's all I had to setup to get that to work.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Michael,
    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Have you setup RD Gateway server in your environment? Are you trying to access the RWW through it?
    On server side you can choose “Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses” under RemoteApp manager and check the result.

  • I keep getting the box that asks "Do you use the Yahoo! Toolbar on multiple Computers. It asks Save to my Yahoo! ID, or No thanks, just save to this computer. How do I get rid of this one way or the other?

    When I log on to Firefox, I get this block that pops up saying, "Do you use the Yahoo! Toolbar on multiple computers? It has 2 buttons asking "Save to my Yahoo! ID or No thanks, just save to this computer" It drops down from the Yahoo toolbar, next to the Y! on the left side of the tool bar. I have tried the Save button and no response, I tried the No thanks button no response. I tried the underlined "Learn more" and it too no response. I tried the close X but that does not get rid of this box. I tried right clicking and no response. It stays there through out while working on the mail, I cannot access the that toolbar so I cannot use the buttons on this tool bar. Please help or I will have to try another browser to see if it go away.

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

  • We are a family of 6 - 2 parents and 4 children.. We have an iMac, 3 macbooks, a Macbook Pro and an iPad. We all want to be able to share the itunes library, but it keeps telling us that it can't authorize more than 5 computers.  What can we do???

    How can we home share with more than 5 computers?? We are a family of 6 and each has his/her own computer.

    You can't. But iDevices don't count. So you should be able to share the 5 computers.

  • Multiple computers sharing one iTunes account?

    I know this must for a FAQ, but I can't seem to find the answer.  I have an iTunes account that I use on my home computer running Vista.  I have purchased quite a bit of music online.  I want to transfer my purchases from my online iTunes store account to my work Macbook and iPhone.  When I login into my iTunes store account on the Mac, I don't see my purchases.  How do I access and download them to the Mac so that I can sync them to iPhone?

    You need to copy them from one computer to the other yourself, until the just-announced iCloud is up and running (we need iTunes 10.3 which should be available shortly). For now, see
    iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between computers
    iTunes for Windows: How to copy purchases between computers
    And if you happen to also own an iPod:
    How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
    Once you have the tracks on some removable medium, you can mount that on your new computer and then just drag the content to the iTunes window. Make sure that the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is set in the iTunes -> Advanced preferences before you do.
    Alternatively, you can use the Add To Library command and select each track (or folder of tracks).
    Regards

  • Sharing one itunes account with two computers

    I used to share my itunes account with my sister and our ipods were synched to one computer. We now have two new computers and would still like to continue to share that account. Is it possible to open the same account on two separate computers?

    Explain how you transfer content manually.
    Control-click or right-click it in iTunes, choose Get Info, locate the music files, move them to the other computer's hard disk as you would any other type of file, and then drag them into the open iTunes window. By default on a Mac, dragging them to the open iTunes window also copies them to the hard disk.

  • 2 computers, 5 family members with their own iTunes accounts. How do we share purchased iTunes and downloaded CDs with homeshare? (I can't get my old iPod music to all go onto my iPad)

    I have 2 computers - Windows Based
    My husband, myself and the kids all have our own "accounts" on the home computer. This was done to limit certain access when the kids were younger.
    The laptop is pretty much mine. I use both computers for my iTunes music.
    Everyone has their own iTunes account for their music and games. I have been able to get music purchased by my other family members on my iPod in the past if I logged in the home computer under their IDs and attached my iPod. Or, if a family member downloaded a CD, I could get that music thes same way without having to download the CD again under my own login ID. However, I now have an iPad, and I can't transfer music from the iPod to the iPad - specifically that which was downloaded from CDs - not iTunes. And I couldn't get it to go from my iPod to my laptop, although both are authorized computers in the Home Sharing.
    It doesn't seem like the Home Sharing works with the different computer login IDs. The iTunes is universally available regardless of who is logged in, but the libraries vary based on who's user name you are under. I have strugged with importing from one User ID to another, which led me to simply log in under a different family member to get the desired music. There has got to be an easier answer and I'm just not figuring it out.
    I've read the support answers, I've read many of the other responses here as well to those with similiar questions, but I am still struggling.
    Any suggestions?

    If you are completely confident that you didn't hide it, then you purchased those with different apple id. If you completely confident that you purchases with same apple id then you have hidden it. One of the other or you are speaking about a miracle. While miracles are possible they are not very likely.
