Undergraduate student interested in Analytics

Hi,
I am currently an incoming 3rd year undergraduate student studying economics and statistics. I want to apply for a masters in business analytics. It is to my understanding that knowledge of languages such as SQL, SAS, and SPSS will all be important for what I want to do.
I have some programming experience with VBA and Java, but I want to learn these three. I want to show on my resume and have some metric of defining my own progress through certifications.
Knowing SQL is a really important skill because it is valuable for database queries for analysis. I don't want to be dedicated to databases and structures and would rather use them as tools for the purpose of deriving valuable analysis and models. I think it would be useful to take the certification for SQL Fundamentals 1 (1Z0-051) and see how that goes, next use it as a basis for potentially taking SQL Certified Expert (1Z0-047). For 11g? I'm not sure which version I should try for.
My other option is the Microsoft Solution Expert: Business Intelligence. However, I would eventually want to work for a fortune 500 company which mainly use Oracle. Also the MCSE is divided into too many (5) different tests, which cover potentially valuable skills, but I am not sure how applicable they would be.
For SAS I will try to get my SAS Certified Base Programmer for SAS 9.
And SPSS, IBM Certified Associate/Specialist SPSS (Maybe)
What do you guys thinking? Am I over my head with this?
Thanks.

I don't know about SAS and SPSS, so won't comment on that.
I know that MCSE Business Intelligence and SQL Certified Expert are very challenging/complicated. Even MCSA SQL Server is for pro. IMHO you can't pass those tests without real world experience. And I also think that those exams made for people with IT background (not economics and statistics).
Try to pass SQL Fundamentals 11g without brain dumps. You will see the level and effort you need for preparation. I guess it's a good first step.

  • Exchange student interested in iPhone 4s

We are hosting an exchange student from Norway and she would like to purchase an iPhone 4s.  What is the best way to go about that and still be able to take it back home with her and use it?  Thanks for your help!

Tell her to go to the nearest Apple Store and purchase an unlocked iPhone. NOT a no-contract phone, but an unlocked phone.

Here's your new code/css. I don't know what youre going to do with the masthead as it will need redesigning to take account of the extra width.

  • Want to know more about Business Analytics in SAP and its scope

    Hi all,
I would like to know more about Business Analytics in SAP and its scope. My wife has finished her MBA (HR) and currently working as HR. She is more interested Business analytics, so please guide her how to startup her career in this field in the entry level, what prerequisites should be met and how the job market will be.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Srini

    Dear,
Its good decision to go with Business Analytics in SAP ERP.
Both businesses and SAP AG no more requires consultants, requires efficient dynamic skilled business analytics professionals to advance in current international market. Business Strategic planning plays a major role in Business Analytics.
If you search google with "Business analytics" you will find hundreds of results which everyone of us has to read and learn what really stands for Strategy and Planning.

As you mentioned, its not a difficult task for an MBA(HR) person to read and understand the subject available.
Please check and Best of luck.
    Regards,
    Syed Hussain.
P.S: "no more requires consultants" my intention is already plenty of consultants in market today. When competition is tough and plenty - invent new technologies and upgrade.

  • Student version v. regular version

I am a graduate student interested in purchasing LabVIEW, and was wondering how the Student Edition of LabVIEW differed from the regular version? Could someone please explain it, or direct me to a page describing the differences?  Thank you.

You have probably read the details on the LabVIEW Student Edition page (http://www.ni.com/labviewse/ ).
There are two version, the "textbook bundle" and the "software suite". Both are are basically full versions of LabVIEW, with the restriction that you can only use it for personal eduational use. (Not for research in a university lab, for example). The suite includes a few cool toolkits. Both are terrific values.
The Student edition prominently displays a "watermark" on the front panel and diagram to make "unauthorized" use immediately obvious.
(Of course your title is a bit ambiguous, because there is more than one "regular" version. We have base, full, and professional. The Student edition is basically the full version and does not have the perks of the professional such as application builder.)
LabVIEW Champion . Do more with less code and in less time .

  • [CAUTION] CC for international students - SelfScore

According to user jsucool76 - who contacted the company directly - they do not report to CRAs if no SSN is supplied during application (one is not required). If a customer then gets a SSN and supplies it to SelfScore they claim they will then start reporting to CRAs. It is not clear at this time what CRAs they report to, if they "backdate" to the time you originally opened your account with them, and then how often they report. So request more details before embarking on this Original post: I know this question has been asked here a few times. I came across this and thought i would share. It seems like a fantastic product.
    Highlights:
    - CC that only international students can apply for
    - No SSN required. You apply by sending them your passport copy, immigration form (to prove you are a student), visa copy and a babk statement
    - Starting limit $1000; no clue if it can grow
    - no AF or from what i can tell no other BS fees
    - APR 0% for 6 months, then 13-23% variable
    - 1% cashback on all purchases
    Www.selfscore.com
It appears to be a startup banking on the fact that international students have a lower default risk than the general US population. My assumption is they like to see some assets (although i don't know how much is enough - is 1k enough? 5k?). They probably don't HP.
Anyway, unless i am missing something this SelfScore seems to be a dream product for international students who want to establish credt history

Hello! This is Alee, Content Director of SelfScore. First of all, thanks for your interest and for taking the time to research our credit card. Based on what's mentioned here, I thought I'd clarify a few facts about our card: -We DO report to credit bureaus once you link an SSN to your SelfScore account-We offer a real credit card, not a debit card or secured credit card-We DO NOT require a cash deposit This is a real credit card for international students that allows you to build a proper US credit history. It is an introductory-level card with a low spending limit and fair APR (these numbers vary based on our users' individual circumstances) plus cash back and no annual fees.  We are former international students who wanted to help younger versions of ourselves access US credit while they study. We're neither a predatory service nor a dream come true. We're offering fair credit to those who deserve it: a population of international students whose creditworthiness could not be measured by existing metrics. We use alternate verification methods such as ability to repay, education, and personal funding sources to substitute for traditional (and outdated) verification methods. If you are an international student interested in our card, sign up for our waitlist. If you want a more detailed answer to anything mentioned here, please contact [email protected] Hope this helps! -Alee

  • Seeking disseration project in EJB.I can do it for free!

    Hi all,
I m an undergraduate student majored in CS, and I am preparing my final year disseration at the moment. Due to my personal interest and strength, I've narrowed my topic to Java, J2eeEJB, WebService and So on.
Neither my tutor nor myself have a project from the real world. Someone suggested me to write a on-line shopping based on EJB, bu this kind of apps are everywhere nowadays. i also tried Supply-chain-management, but gave up coz it's too hard for me to fingure out what i need to do without a specific requirment.
I would be very grateful if someone here in this forum can offer me a project, or at least a detailed business requirment documentation. Idealy, if you have to happy an interesting project to be implememted, i can do it for u for free!

Here are the things you have to consider for a project:
    1) Develop a user requirements document. You have to imagine the needs of the client, such as what are going to use their system for, who are you targeting (managers, cashiers, inventory control, accountants for payroll...). You can use use cases and a business case for the project. Things like upgrading from a simple cash register and reducing the tons of paperwork associated to inventory and payrolls.
    2) Define the best architecture by specifying the J2EE bits and pieces that you will use. UML is good for this as you determine the component and deployment diagrams. Show how the users will be using the system and the types of hardware necessary. This should include the costs.
    3) Develop class diagrams and interaction diagrams to understand the flow of activities. Activity diagrams are also good.
    4) Develop the thing
If you were in a concrete business deal, you would have to go into more depth. This is only skimming the surface.

  • ABAP Curriculum Development

I'm in the process of developing a detailed curriculum for teaching ABAP in a university setting.  When the resources are finished, they will be made available to other universities that participate in the SAP University Alliances program.  I wanted to see if anyone was interested in collaborating on the creation of these resources.  Any type of assistance would be welcome, but I would particularly value someone who would review the items and offer feedback for improvement.  As such, this could be someone with an academic or professional background.
The course resources being created are intended to be used to teach ABAP to students who are veteran programmers such as those that would be found in a computer science, IT, or similar university program.  The intent is to cover the fundamentals of ABAP programming, ABAP Objects, and other useful language applications.  For those familiar with the SAP training courses on ABAP, the general idea is to cover content similar to BC100, BC400, and BC 401, with other content mixed in.  The textbook used in conjunction with the pilot class is ABAP Objects but that would not be a mandatory element.
To see a sample (and these are redacted since they are publicly available) of some of the resources, visit http://einstein.etsu.edu/~pittares/podcast/index.php#CSCI4767 and look at the resources for Enterprise Programming.
If anyone has any interest in working on this project, your assistance would be valued.  Please let me know.

    Hi Paul,
I'm familiar with those resource and have looked over the things in the collaboration workspace.
I have found that many employers in our area specifically are seeking out ABAP developers.  As my students are senior-level undergraduate students or graduate-level IT students, I'm endeavoring to create resources that would cover more elements and in more detail.  I think it could be a nice companion to the resources already available on CW.
I do find it interesting that you have a method for segregating student work.  None of the American UCCs have a viable technique for doing that.  I'd be interested in learning more about that.
I'd be very interested in seeing what you have in the Web Dynpro space.  My graduate students are using Getting Started with Web Dynpro ABAP by Ofenloch and Schwaiger in the graduate ABAP section, but I'm not developed any other resources for their work.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Hello There.. I need an advice

I'm undergraduate student in Computer Science and I have passion for Java programming. I learn many of it's fundamental especially in J2SE area(basic concept, OO, generics, SWING, etc.). I'm hungry to expand my knowledges. However I don't know which area should I pursue. There are many area of Java programming and it's everywhere :) . I 'm interested about dynamic web programming, however I don't know where to start. Few month later, I try to learn something about JSP and JSF on my own and found it later overwhelming me. Maybe I just don't follow the right path, like I should.
I did'nt know what and where I should start..

learn core jave first then move onto j2ee, i have not done any JSF but start with the core stuff, check out the sylabus for SCJP exam for some areas to cover.

  • Help me to start a final year project..

I am a 4th year undergraduate student following a special degree in
bioinformatics/computational biology. i have 'some' programming knowledge in JAVA, javascripting, VB.net, VB6, SQL, PHP, HTML, prolog, OpenGL and someknowledge in MATLAB. im thinking of doing
my project in JAVA. But i dont have a clear idea about a project(i mean a project title..ok).So people out there. Any ideas for a project( which will be useful for my higher studies too)..????

how about a java program that allows researchers from various parts of the world to send information to a particular computer some where, which organises and computers this data. This may be used to investigate a case/situation you find interesting in bio informatics. Or a program that simulates an artificial environment filled with whatever you wish, like animals or microbes. That could be a fun simulation. Or maybe even one that takes information on a person/animal and, given information on the condition or lifestyle of the person, calculates the risk or chances of something happening (like cancer). Or better yet - something that analyzes someone's genes? I have no idea how that works - but would be interesting. More simply, one that analyzes a person's fitness perhaps?

  • Error 63 occurred at DataSocket Write in getWavelength_v80 EDITED.vi, help? please!

Hey guys, I am new to LabView and I have thought myself everything that I know.  I am an undergraduate student at NC A&T.
Okay so I took a peice of code that I acquired from Bristol, and it's for a Bristol Wavemeter V1.22.  I first edited it to get a graph in there to show the data, and get a slope and Y intercept.  Now I am trying to connect it to a computer that controls a COntinuum ND6000.  We have existing code for the ND6000 that lets the two computers connect.  I took the code out of there that was the part that connects them and now when I wired everything up, I get the "Error 63 occurred at DataSocket Write in getWavelength_v80 EDITED.vi" error message.  it states; Possible reason(s):
LabVIEW:  Serial port receive buffer overflow.
    =========================
LabVIEW:  The network connection was refused by the server. For TCP/IP, make sure the server is running and listening on the port you are trying to use. Firewalls can also cause a server to refuse a connection. For VI Server, make sure you have enabled VI Server from Tools>>Options>>VI Server:Configuration."
I tried making sure everything in the configuration was correct and it all is.  Can you guys please help me?
    Thank you.
I have attached the folder that it is located in because you do have to have the library function.  The file is located in the Bristol Wavelength Meter V1.22\Programming Interface\LabVIEW example I.
    Thank you again!

So I went through and realized that I had the wrong port typed in by 1 number, I changed that and put in the correct port for the TCP address.  Now when I run it I get this error message 66....
"LabVIEW:  The network connection was closed by the peer. If you are using the Open VI Reference function on a remote VI Server connection, verify that the machine is allowed access by selecting Tools>>Options>>VI Server:Machine Access on the server side."
Any help?? I checked the Server Machine access and all of them are set to allow.

  • My HAMAMATSU C4742-95-12-NRB camera is not working in EMD E (External Edge Trigger)

    Hello!
I am trying to control the HAMAMATSU C4742-95-12NRB camera externally through an external trigger pulse.
There are two modes in the exposure setting command:
    EMD E - External Edge
    EMD L - External Level
The camera is working fine in the External Level mode (EMD L). I send an external pulse (through ARDUINO) and, after changing the pulse from low to high, the camera starts the exposure within 11 us.
However, the same thing does not occur when the camera is in the External Edge mode (EMD E). I send an external pulse (through ARDUINO too) and a message with an error appears: "Error 0xBFF60093 The serial read did not complete within the specified timeout period".
It is so strange. I think that the problem can be something in the attribute External Shutter Time - EST n (n can range from 1 to 93600 according to the camera manual). But, when I use the edit function at NI Camera File Generator for this camera, it says that this "n" ranges from 132 to 10005916.
Could someone help me with this issue?
    Thanks in advance!

You need to verify what voltage the camera is expecting.  Since you are using an Arduino, I will assume that your trigger signal is 5VDC.  For a 12volt trigger, 5VDC would be right at the boundry of 0/1, and setting Level would trigger as the signal settles, presumably around 5.1VDC.
A pulse would never get there.  If the camera does in fact need 12/24 VDC for triggering, you will need to build/buy a circuit for stepping up the voltage.

  • How to read multiple dat files.

    Hello Everyone!
I am working on a project that requires one file that creates a JFrame with a current file title, JTextFields that accesses two .dat files and a JButton.
The user clicks a JButton to cycle through the first sequential .dat file. When the end of the first file is reached the file is closed, the JFrame title is changed to the second file title as the user continues to click the JButton to continue on viewing the second file?s records, until the second reaches the end of file.
The project requires using Try-Catches to catch the EOF exceptions and IOExceptions and Thread or Runnable.
I have been able to get one file to read and display its records; however, researching back through my text on how to read/write to files I haven?t been able to determine how to get to the end of the file and proceed to the next file without triggering the EOFException. I have even tried multiple Try-Catches (one for each file within the actionPerformed method) and that ends up ignoring the first file records and only displays the second files records.
This is a school project and we have only covered just the bare basics of Java over the last two months. So, any hints that anyone can provide can only be of what type of procedure will be needed or what procedure won?t help to complete the task, without giving away the solution.
I have spent approximately 40 hours of study time on this project and believe that I have definitely run into a major snag.
The following is the code I have so far:

And how does that help with a DataInputStream?

I'm an undergraduate student in software engineering. I worked with EE and tried to built a EJB Application. It worked. But when i connected it to database using persistence it getting error as mentioned.
When i change my source Binary Format to jdk6 it runs without errors. What can i do for this without downgrading jdk version?

I resolved my problem. The issue was the version of EclipseLink that I had specified in my pom.xml. Version 2.0.1 has an issue with the meta-model generation and, in fact, I wanted to be using version 2.1.1. Once I changed to 2.1.1 everything compiled correctly.
Just make certain that you include the correct EclipseLink repository.

  • Using DAQ-assist to input a waveform; need help building a counter to count voltage "spikes"

Hey all! I'm pretty new to labView and even newer to this forum, but its nice to meet you all...I hope that perhaps someone can help me with my problem.
Allow me to begin by detailing the specifications of the problem.  I am an undergraduate student, and have a job doing research in a MEMS (micro/nanotech) lab.  The graduate student I am making this program for is working on biomedical applications;  eventually, the program will be connected to a microdevice that has a tiny channel in it, cut through a wee little capacitor, which blood will run through.  As red blood cells pass this capacitor, the voltage will spike; meaning that for each voltage spike, we can (and are trying to) count the number of red blood cells.
However, I am still in the early developement of the program, so this above specific info is not that important.  Basically, I am using a function generator to input a waveform to the DAQ assistant of, say 500 mV.  I am trying to write a program that increments a counter every time I turn the voltage above say 550 mV (peak-to-peak), counting the number of simulated "spikes."  I have tried quite a lot to write a working program, and although I have not gotten it to work yet, I will post a screenshot of my most recent attempt HERE:
I thank you in advance for any helpful tips, advice, or straight up assistance you may be able to give me.  Please ask me any clarifying questions about the program I wrote or the application, or anything.  Happy Friday!

Hey guys, it's been a while!  A lot of stuff has been happening in my life and I have had virtually no time to work on my LabView project.
I did create a LabView program based off IanW's reccomendation.  I am unsure of what exactly is going wrong, but when I run it, only a simple "snapshot" of a waveform from the DAQ shows up in the graph.  Even when I put the DAQ assist in a seperate while loop, the same thing happens.  I am including a screenshot of the project in case I am messing something entirely different up.  If you happen to read this, I really appreciate your help and thank you Ian!
I am also having a random issue with the filter signal VI.  So that background signals in the actual experiment do not read as "spikes" I have been instructed to include a high-pass filter in the VI.  However, everytime I use the high pass filter VI, it botches my signal and turns it into a bunch of noise!  I, nor my graduate mentor (who isn't too well-versed in LabView) have any idea why this is - we've tried using different types of filters to no avail.
Lastly, I would like to talk to Peter about a few questions I had abour LabView design.  In case you're still around, I will write another post later today with more detail.  In the meantime, I will try to find some of the example VIs about shift registers   All who read this have a great day!
