Understanding Server Log

I am really grateful to members of this forum in helping and guiding me in setting up my first server. Everything appears to be running smoothly so far.  The monitoring strategy and understanding the server log will be critical. Can anyone point me to documentation that would help understanding the server log?

Nope.  Sorry.
There is no general documentation of the server logs (beyond scattered postings and web pages, and the associated source code for various associated component tools as that code is available, and details of logs and errors for some of the specific components from their respective maintainers), nor would I expect this sort of general console log documentation to be available due to the sheer breadth of componentry and the churn from the OS X updates and upgrades.  The process of learning the logs involves watching and learning what's normal operation for a specific server, and what sorts of patterns — blocks of repeated errors, daemons crashing and restarting, unusual delays or such — that indicate issues.   Some of the normal log chatter can look quite draconian and can spook readers, with the ClamAV warning being a popular example of this, as are various (paraphrasing) OMG OUTDATED API warnings for OS X components.
If you're starting to deal with a number of systems, then you'll be looking at implementing log analysis tools and rules, SNMP and syslog to manage the chatter.
As a more general discussion, learning the individual components from available resources is entirely reasonable and recommended, as might be learning the structure of the OS X kernel and maybe then looking at application crashes and such for more advanced understanding.  There are books and videos and various web pages on the components.  Once you know how the pieces work, knowing what's normal in the logs is a little easier.
Monitoring system activity can help, too.  It's fairly common to see a failure generate excessive disk I/O or processor activity, and spool up the fans.  Security breaches and DDoSes and such can generate similar loads.  The server gets, well, hot.  If you watch the server and network activity, you can know when your system is busy, and know when it's busy for no obvious or good reason.  At a more advanced policy and planning level, plotting activity over time can tell you when your server is headed toward an overload.
Monitoring the core server forum postings via RSS feeds (eg: this forum) can help spot trends and what become known bugs, as can be membership on the Mac Enterprise mailing list.  I also follow various security-oriented notification lists and RSS feeds, including those RSS feeds from Apple and those associated with components and tools I use.  (These can also help you learn the system and the tools, too.)
More generally, have backups, consider and potentially implement periodic off-site backups, learn IP networking and DNS and maybe managed switches and DMZs and the rest if and as you scale up, get onto notification lists for the tools and products that you use (particularly for security reports), and (generally) don't rush to upgrade OS X Server save for cases involving actively-exploited or critical security or stability problems — have your reasons for upgrading and consider the trade-offs against not upgrading, and "shiny" isn't usually one of the best reasons for an upgrade.

  • Custom logging, multiple apps in one file, different from server.log

I have several applications running on my integration server. I would like to log from these apps to a single file (different file from server.log)
I tried to use custom log4j logging, but there's a problem with the RollingFileAppender. Whenever a file is rolled, the backup copies are deleted. It probably happens because different classloaders load different apps and I configure the log4j in every app, but I don't understand classloaders.
Here is a part of the log4j.properties file:
    log4j.appender.file=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender
    log4j.appender.file.File=/path/log
    log4j.appender.file.maxBackupIndex=10
log4j.appender.file.maximumFileSize=10485760and I configure the logger in every app by
org.apache.log4j.PropertyConfigurator.configure( logPropertiesPath );(Is this wrong? Is it even possible to use one log file from different apps? The integration servers does it...)
I don't need the log4j, if the internal logging can be set up to log app. messages to a different file and configured with a different layout pattern, it would be enough.
Can anybody please help with my logging problem?

    I've tried this:
I've put log4j.jar to the lib dir of the logicalhost and log4j.properties to another jar (my own) and put it to the lib dir too. I deleted the PropertyCOnfigurator.configure() line from the apps. Built it, manually deleted log4j.jar from the EARs. Then I deployed EARs, restarted the domain and ran the apps. They both logged to the same and correct file, but again the rolling didn't work. How is this possible? I thought that this way the IS should have one and only one instance of Log4j...

  • Cannot view web server logs in Server Admin

It has been a terrible day.
    First, the interesting part:
I woke up to find that 25 sites that are hosted on an XServe G5 running OS X Server 10.3.9 had been defaced. As the part-time, unpaid admin of this server, it was my responsibility to track down the vulnerability in the system and restore the defaced files from backups. The hacker had replaced the index.html file for each of the sites with his own, special version, in which he proudly declared that my server had been owned. I did a Nessus scan of the server and came up with nothing. I pulled what was left of my hair out looking for every vulnerability I could come up with, and still nothing.
I then decided to use Google to get more information about him, using the name he proudly posted on the defaced sites, and was able to get his IM address. I proceeded to have an awkwardly pleasant conversation with him, in which he declared that he has discovered a new vulnerability and decided to try it out on my machine for the challenge. He apologized, but would not reveal the vulnerability (although he hinted that it had something to do with mod_security). He also promised to leave my machine alone now ....
(Now for the not so interesting part, and the nature of my current problem)
Anyway, I did what I could to clean up the mess, and wound up viewing the access logs in the Console app via ARD. That led me nowhere, so I decided to call it a night and logged out of ARD. A few minutes later, I thought I would log into ServerAdmin and take another look at those logs, but alas, they could no longer be viewed through ServerAdmin! The log section is empty. I ssh'd into the machine to see if he had broken his promise and messed around some more, but the logs still existed where they had always been. I ran tail -f on them to make sure they are still being updated, and they are.
So after all that, it seems my big problem at the moment is viewing logs in ServerAdmin. I did not make any changes to httpd.conf (outside of disabling mod_security, which commented out the appropriate LoadModule and AddModule lines). I also disabled a few other unnecessary mods earlier in the evening via ServerAdmin, but I doubt that any particular mod controls whether or not I can view log files in ServerAdmin.
I apologize for the length of this post, but it has been quite a day. If anyone can provide any clues as to either the location of error logs for the ServerAdmin app or any sort of known resolution to this issue, I would name my first born after you.
    Thanks.

What purpose you will solve by loading the web server logs into the database? I will not advice it. It will be much easier for you to manage these logs at file system level as well monitor these for any issues, rather than loading it into database and then running sone database job to dig into those logs for any errors. Loading logs into database will help if you need to keep them for long time (More than 1 Year time frame or for regulatory purpose), otherwise it is better for logs to keep it on file system and just get regular backups of these logs into tape.
    My 2 cents
RegardsOverall, I agree but I don't understand your comment about "Loading logs into database will help if you need to keep them for long time". Even if needed for regulatory reasons, one can manage them quite nicely outside of the database.
Also to expand on this a bit for the OP .... if the need arose to use SQL to mine the logs for information that would be hard to get using the search feature of a simple text editor, one could always define an external table on an as-needed basis.

  • Sql server log shipping space consumption

I have implemented sql server logs shipping from hq to dr server
The secondary databases are in standby mode .
The issue is that after configuring it , my dr server is running out of space very rapidly
I have checked the log shipping folders where the trn files resides and they are of very decent size , and the retention is configured for twenty four hours
I checked the secondary databases and their size is exactly same as that of the corresponding primary databases
Could you guys please help me out in identifying the reason behind this odd space increase
I would be grateful if you could point me to some online resources that explains this matter with depth

The retention is happening . I have checked the folders they do not have records older then 24 hours .
I dont know may be its because in the secondary server (Dr) there is no full backup job working , is it because of this the ldf file is getting bigger and bigger but again I far as my understanding goes we cannot take a database full backup in the stand
    by mode .
The TLog files of log shipped DBs on the secondary will be same size as that of primary. The only way to shrink the TLog files on secondary (I am not advising you to do this) is to shrink them on the primary, force-start the TLog backup job, then the copy
job, then the restore job on the secondary, which will sync  the size of the TLog file on the secondary.
If you have allocated the same sized disk on both primary and secondary for TLog files, then check if the Volume Shadow Copy is consuming the space on the secondary

  • Server Log Confusion (message meanings)

I realize that there are several pieces to this whole LiveCycle thing, but I and my colleagues find the robustness of the server log files somewhat overwhelming and extremely daunting.  I am not even sure what question to ask or how to ask it.  Basically I would like a list or a link to the descriptions and troubleshooting guides for the various modules/statements/messages that can appear in the server log.  Some are rather easy to interpret, understand, and figure out.  BUT, many of them are worse than reading Latin especially those that reference a STACKTRACE.  Even a high-level breakdown of some of the more common things.  Just about any help would aid us.  Attempting to search Adobe or even the web for specific entries with the specifics stripped out produces few is any sound results.
I apologize if this seems like I am venting.  Some of it may be just that but I can not believe that I/we am the only one confused by the server log.

I found that one and it is useful to an extent but only if the log entry has one of those codes and if the code is in that file.  It seems that 90% of the log entries I am dealing with do not have any of those codes.  This may mean that they are specific to LiveCycle but related to one of the other tools used by LiveCycle (i.e., JBoss).  I do not know and that is part of my frustration.

  • CVP Call Server Logs

    Dear Members,
Could someone help me by providing any good document related to the "CVP CALLSERVER LOGS" and "CVP VXMLSERVER LOGS"
    Regards,
    Senthil.

I'll leave the Call Server log question alone for a bit, because you have a point.
But the CVP VXML activity logs could not be any more transparent.
When the logging is set to complete (the default), and all the modules turned on (again, the default), every element is tracked in detail, plus any of your custom logging that you add either in the elements or in your own Action Elements is recorded in the log.
The CVP VXML documentation describes exactly how the log file is layed out. The VXML engine buffers the logging for each call and writes it when the call terminates, keeping all the activities for one call together in a block.
What is it about these logs that you want to understand? It's extremely obvious.
The only thing that is annoying is that the default setting for the activity log rotation attribute is "by_size" with a ludicrous value of 100MB. It should be set to
The other little thing I'll complain about is somewhere between CVP 3 and CVP 7, they lost control over the comma-separated fields. These were exact in CVP 3, and you could import into SQL - in fact, a tool was provided. Along came the Reporting Option and bye-bye went the tool.
But there are some inconsistencies now with the number of comma-separated fields and I had to write a little Java pre-processor to pass my activity logs through, before upload into SQL Server. Annoying.

  • Reading server logs

    hi,
I am working on clustering (third party) installed on exchange server 2003,2008.....
everytime time the admin of those exchange erver changes their admin pasword there seems to be issues in clustering.
now can someone help understand which logs(server or system) to look into to know if they have changed their
exchange password....can i find it in system logs  ...and where exactly...
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, there is no Exchange 2008. What's your Exchange version and Windows version?
Do you want to know the event id about changing the password of logging onto Window Server or logging onto OWA/Outlook?

  • LYNC 2013 Event Logging Parameters for LYNC server logs

    Hi,
We have LYNC server 2013 enterprise voice. We have third party Monitoring server to monitor the event logging.
Do we have default event logging parameters for LYNC Server logs in LYNC 2013?
    Thanks
    jitender

There's really just the default level of logging for Lync Server Event Logs.  For individual call troubleshooting you might use the debug logger, and for longer term troubleshooting you'd deploy the Lync Monitoring role.  The monitoring role, service
status, and performance monitor counters are what you really want to be monitoring if you're watching your Enterprise Voice deployment.
If I understand the question, there isn't a way to turn up the amount of logs generated in the Lync event logs or change parameters around this.

  • Error Message in MDM Server Log

    Hi Experts,
Can anybody tell me what could be the problems if we have the following scenario ?
For an example: Our MDM Server is based on 5.5 SP06, MDM Server name is DFM and our repository name is MDMQ110.
    1) Checking the Reports from this Repository MDMQ110 from MDM Console, no errors and no warning. This repository can be loaded successfully and completed.
    2) Server Log has an error in message:
Error: Service 'DFM', Schema 'MDMQ110_m000', ERROR CODE = 0,
    SELECT LENGTH(Data) FROM A2i_Misc_Blobs WHERE Id=1000
Thanks very much for your help in advance
    Regards,
    WD

    Hi Kanstantsin,
Thanks for your reply. I have done the stop and repair but It did not help any. By repair, there are no errors and warnings that have been fixed which I can see in the repository reports.
The Assertion Log has come up first with the messages like:
    6426            2010/01/12 09:07:08.500               Error: Data_2 accelerator does not exist in A2i_CM_Accelerator_Status
    6426            2010/01/12 09:07:08.683               Error: Data_53 accelerator does not exist in A2i_CM_Accelerator_Status
    4884 2010/01/12 09:43:30.335   Error: KeyWord_2_F4_Leng_USA accelerator does not exist in A2i_CM_Accelerator_Status
As soon as I run into MDM, the Server Log has come up the same messages:
It looks like not only happened to this repository. As I can see if I load any other repository, there are the same messages in Server Log but only the repository name in the message is different.

how to have a live feed from application server log file (realtime viewr for apps log files)
hi , thank you for reading my post.
is there any way to have a live feed of Application server log ?
for example is there any application that can watch the log file and show the changes as new log items come in ?
can some one with more experience help ?

Your question would be more suited to the Developer Forums
    http://devforums.apple.com
    but anyway...
My goal is to develop a web application that is able to run on iPhone too, to capture the audio and video content from its camera and mic.
Web Apps running in Safari don't have access to the camera or mic hardware.
Or I should built a native application distributed through Apple store?
That is your only option, although such a system already exists:

  • WebLogic 10.3.2.0 hanging at startup after "The server log file is opened."

    Hi,
A WebLogic 10.3.2.0 server is hanging at startup. There are no error messages. The last command in the startup window is:
"The server log file <log file dest> is opened. All server side log events will be written to this file."
I think the next line should be:
"Security initializing using security realm realm."
Any ideas on what could be the issue? For instance what resources should be accessed at that point of time? There is sufficient space left on the (virtual machine) disk. The VM configured with 8GB memory. Could it be performance related still?

  • Crystal Report 2008 results "Password did not match error" in SQL Server Log

    Hi,
I am trying to develop some crystal reports using Crystal Report 2008 SP4 to connect to SQL server 2008 through RDO (ODBC). My problem is that anytime Crystal Report is trying to establish a connection with SQL Server, first it tries to connect with the wrong password and results the following error message in SQL Server log:
Login failed for user 'peyman'. Reason: Password did not match that for the login provided. [CLIENT: 192.168.2.198]
The login name 'peyman' is the right one as I have quoted the same in setting up ODBC System DSN using "SQL Server Native Client 10". But somehow Crystal Report is taking its chance and trying to connect before prompting me for the password. After this error logged to SQL server side, I can see Crystal Report pops up the prompt to enter DSN password. After supplying password to this prompt, Crystal Report works fine and pulls the data and renders the report without having any more incorrect password error logged to SQL Server.
The attached file shows the step I am taking to regenerate the issue. I need this to be fixed as anytime uses any of these reports and tries to render it with crystal runtime engine the same error message raises in SQL Server side and logged in the log file.
    Thanks,

    Hi Peyman,
This is the way it should work, In CR designer when you open the report it does nothing. As soon as you hit the Refresh button then CR tries to use the connection saved with the report. It assumes what is saved with the report is a valid server and connection info. CR simply tries to verify the server is still active.
If you don't want it to fail in CRD then before opening any report Click the File, Log on Database option and connect. Now when refreshing reports it won't log the failed.
In the SDK it does the same thing, it assumes the Server info is the same and does try to connect to verify the Server does exist. It only takes a few milli-seconds to do this
To stop this from happening set the log on info first then it won't log the attempt to connect, it's checking to see if Trusted is allowed.

Notice it doesn't try to connect first if I set the log on info first using code.
So nothing we can do to stop SQL server from logging this info. Check with the DBA, possibly they can "filter" out the application attempts to connect or change your work flow in the app.
If you have a Preview Button to view the report then simply add your Database log on info prompt there if Connectioninfo.Trusted is not true:
    mainSecureDB = rpt.Database.Tables[tableIndex].LogOnInfo.ConnectionInfo.IntegratedSecurity;
if mainSecureDB = false then prompt the user for log on info and set accordingly, if it is true the it should not fail when it connects.
This is simply a matter of changing your App work flow...
    Thanks

This path is not available for
Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition
    9.0 (build b48)
There is no server-config under Configurations. Do
you know how to do this for this version of the app
    server?Right.
There is only one "config" available for Platform Edition. So, can
    you try:
    - Click on Application Server in the left panel.
    - Right hand side, third tab is "Logging". Click there.
    - Second tab below is Log Levels. You can see various component
(module) log levels there. The default is "INFO" for all.
    I tested this on 9.0 PE - b48.
    Hope this helps.

  • Power Bi for o365 - Odata connection test worked but "The server encountered an error processing the request. See server logs for more details". Port 8051? Authority\System

We set up the Data Management Gateway and created a new data source (odata to SQL via sqL user)
Did a connection test and it was successful!
Tried the URL (maybe it needs more):
    https://ourdomain.hybridproxy.powerbi.com/ODataService/v1.0/odatatest
That resolves to some :8051 port address and then spits out this message:
The server encountered an error processing the request. See server logs for more details.
I checked and the data management gateway is running.
Does that 8051 port need to be opened on our firewall for this server? How can I confirm that is the issue.. I see no event on the server indicating this is the issue?
    I am seeing this event:
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'PowerBiTest'. [CLIENT: IP of the Server]

    O365,
    Is this still an issue?
    Thanks!
