Undo list is saying stupid things

I'm working on some rather large files imported from a ProTools aaf (originally from an Avid omf) and every time I try and undo any audio edits it takes hours (spinning beachball of death territory). Undoing automation is a little sluggish, but not as bad.
The most worrying thing is that The Undo List seems to be talking rubbish - the list doesn't refer to the edit steps that I have just taken - it seems that they are from several steps before - however, if I undo, it, at least, still undoes the last edit that I have performed rather than the one that it says (but like I say, it's painfully slow).
The Undo History, however, seems to say the correct edits, but stepping back through this is even slower!! I have tried deleting this History, but it hasn't made the blindest bit of difference.
I don't seem to have these problems with any other (smaller) files - could it be a memory issue?
Cheers

Thanks again, but I don't think you've quite understood the necessity for handles on the audio files Ray: these are extra portions of sound at either end of the audio files, which you don't get if you consolidate all the audio into one file.
I'm editing dialogue for TV/Film and each individual take/slate has it's own little clip of audio associated with it. They are all at different levels and with differing tones and background noise. I need those extra bits of sound so I can have the flexibility of extending the clips until the next bit of dialogue comes in, creating crossfades between sections, or for things such as finding a blank bit of audio to insert in a gap or for use as a template for noise reduction... I am also correcting rough audio editing done by the film editor, and in some cases, this means that some words are missing or have been truncated.
If the audio was all merged into one file, these sections would be impossible to fix and tidying up the rest would become much more difficult and less effective.
If you're talking about exporting each file individually, then that's a huge task - each half hour episode of the series I'm working on at present has between 1200 and 1300 files!! I think I'd rather put up with having to wait a while for some undos to happen than have to do that!
I really wish that I didn't have to worry about this sort of thing, and I second the opinion of several other contributors that I have read, who feel that recently the quality and reliability of Apple hardware and software has gone downhill...
In the meantime, I'm having to retrain myself to manually redo any edits that I have made rather than reaching for +command z+... it's getting there...

  • 10 Stupid Things Managers Do To Screw  Up performance

From the Movie : "I HATE MANAGERS"
Stupid Thing  #1: Spending more time on performance appraisal than performance PLANNING, or ongoing performance communication.
Performance appraisal is the end of a process that goes on all the time - a process that is based on good communication between manager and employee. So, more time should be spent preventing performance problems than evaluating at the end of the year. When managers do good things during the year, the appraisal is easy to do and comfortable, because there won't be any surprises.
Stupid Thing #2: Comparing employees with each other.
Want to create bad feelings, damage morale, get staff to compete so badly they will not work as a team? Then rank staff or compare staff. A guaranteed technique. And heck, not only can a manager create friction among staff, but the manager can become a great target for that hostility too. A bonus!
Stupid Thing #3: Forgetting appraisal is about improvement, not blame.
We do appraisal to improve performance, not find a donkey to pin a tail on or blame. Managers who forget this end up developing staff who don't trust them, or even can't stand them. That's because the blaming process if pointless, and doesn't help anyone. If there is to be a point to performance appraisal it should be getting manager and employee working together to have
Stupid Thing #4: Thinking a rating form is an objective, impartial tool.
Many companies use rating forms to evaluate employees (you know, the 1-5 ratings?). They do that because it's faster than doing it right. The problem comes when managers believe that those ratings are in some way "real", or anything but subjective, often vague judgements that are bound to be subjective and inaccurate. By the way, if you have two people rate the same employee, the chances of them agreeing are very small. THAT'S subjective. Say it to yourself over and over. Ratings are subjective. Rating forms are subjective. Rating forms are not behavioral.
Stupid Thing #5: Stopping performance appraisal when a person's salary is no longer tied to the appraisals.
Lots of managers do this. They conduct appraisals so long as they have to do so to justify or withhold a pay increase. When staff hit their salary ceiling, or pay is not connected to appraisal and performance, managers don't bother. Dumb. Performance appraisal is FOR improving performance. It isn't just about pay (although some think it is ONLY about pay). If nothing else, everyone needs feedback on their jobs, whether there is money involved or not.
Stupid Thing #6: Believing they are in position to accurately assess staff.
Managers delude themselves into believing they can assess staff performance, even if they hardly ever see their staff actually doing their jobs, or the results of their jobs). Not possible. Most managers aren't in a position to monitor staff consistently enough to be able to assess well. And, besides what manager wants to do that or has the time. And, what employee wants their manager perched, watching their every mood. That's why appraisal is a partnership between employee and manager.
Stupid Thing #7: Cancelling or postponing appraisal meetings.
Happens a whole lot. I guess because nobody likes to do them, so managers will postpone them at the drop of a hat. Why is this bad? It says to employees that the process is unimportant or phony. If managers aren't willing to commit to the process, then they shouldn't do it at all. Employees are too smart not to notice the low priority placed on appraisals.
Stupid Thing #8: Measuring or appraising the trivial.
Fact of life: The easiest things to measure or evaluate are the least important things with respect to doing a job. Managers are quick to define customer service as "answering the phone within three rings", or some such thing. That's easy to measure if you want to. What's NOT easy to measure is the overall quality of service that will get and keep customers. Measuring overall customer service is hard, so many managers don't do it. But they will measure the trivial.
Stupid Thing #9: Surprising employees during appraisal.
Want to really waste your time and create bad performance? This is a guaranteed technique. Don't talk to staff during the year. When they mess up, don't deal with it at the time but SAVE it up. Then, at the appraisal meeting, truck out everything saved up in the bank and dump it in the employee's lap. That'll show 'em who is boss!
Stupid Thing #10: Thinking all employees and all jobs should be assessed in exactly the same way using the same procedures.
Do all employees need the same things to improve their performance? Of course not. Some need specific feedback. Some don't. Some need more communication than others. And of course jobs are all different Do you think we can evaluate the CEO of Ford using the same approach as we use for the person who cleans the factory floor? Of course not. So, why do managers insist on evaluating the receptionist using the same tools and criteria as the civil engineers in the office?
It's dumb. One size does not fit all. Actually why do managers do this? Mostly because the personnel or human resource office leans on them to do so. It's almost understandable, but that doesn't make it any less dumb.

    mary ann,
According to MacTracker, this Mac can only address 3GBs.  You can put 4GBs in, but it will use only 3.
Has your hard drive ever been much fuller than today?  If so, you may have significant file fragmentation, especially since you've been using it for quite a long time.
To assess that, download the free demo of iDefrag.  It will not defragment your drive, but it will tell you how fragmented your files are.
If fragmentation is an issue, then my cure is to clone your hard drive (I used Carbon Copy Cloner - donationware), to an external drive, and make a bootable system.  Then boot from that system, and clone back to your internal drive.
Getting back to improving the overall performance of your Mac, you should probably move old files that you don't use often to a large external drive.
If you can get your internal drive to less than 50% full, it will run faster.  The reason is that all the data will be grouped together in a small part of the drive, and that part has faster data transfer.  So you get two benefits.  Faster location of data, and faster transfer of data.
Also, if your system is getting Page Outs even after you add all the RAM you can, the paging will be faster if the drive is less full.
The same story applies to external drives.  Buy the biggest capacity drive you can get and it will go faster.  Especially on the first partition you define (if you decide to partition it).
Hope this helps.  If it's not clear, do add followup questions

  • Can i see a LIST of all the things removed from MobileMe in the upgrade to iCloud?

i have heard so many reports of things changed in MobileMe in the "upgrade" to iCloud, and i want to clarify these prior to switching over (i have already upgraded to iOS5 and 10.7.2) because from what i have heard some of these chages are going to mean a massive LOSS OF INFORMATION!!!
based on how i have been using mobileme for the last 10 years (in it's various incarnations) i have heard that when you update:-
1/ i am going to lose my 100's of photo websites in june 2012 (thanks guys!!)
2/ i am going to lose most of the notes i have added to the over 1500 entries in my AddressBook (and some of those notes are VERY long and perfectly placed since they give me immediate access to data/info on the person/company in AB (this is a TERRIBLE DECISION IF TRUE) becaue apple had given a new charcter limit to Notes
3/ my iphone now does not seem to play anything that was bought from beatport or freebies i have received from DJs (which i belive is linked to the size of the bit rate - some are 14100, rather than the 320 of itunes tracks) and which means i am either going to have to find another music player and/or stop buying music from any one other than itunes <<DUH>>
4/ i have used my mac.com account in itunes to buy a LOT of stuff, different bits of which go on my iphone, ipad, etc (in fact the ipad is used by my mother who would have never ever have bought any apps, so i have adapted the ipad with the apps i think she would like - but i do not want these on my iphone) so am i going to have to repeatedly stop itunes form adding every new purchase from downloading itself to all my apple equipment??????
quite frankly, if all the above is true (and i bet there are more to come ) then it is a ral smack in the face of long time apple users who have bought into the whole iDisk, MobileMe stuff in the past, and who have created a ersonal way of using them - i bought a family pack just so i could put different types of photo website up under my different"family" names - all of which were initially just for me to use!!!!!!!!!!!!
so, please can you publish a list of all the things i am going to lose when i move to the icloud?????????????
sees a fair request, but one which it also seems i have to ask for cos i cannot find a list such as this anywhere on the apple website

You can see a detailed comparison between MobileMe and iCloud, plus general information and some links to Apple Help pages, here:
    http://rfwilmut.net/icloud
Question 2 would be best asked as an individual question in the hope of attracting the attention of someone who is in the same situation and can give you a practical answer: question 3 would best be asked in the iPhone forum.

  • How do you get applescript to say multiple things simultaneously?

I'm quite new to applescrips, and although I've written some basic scripts, I can't really do anything useful (since I have no knowledge of how to use Terminal commans or how to run shell scripts).
I've been trying to get applescript to say multiple things at once, in the same OR in different voices, whatever. No matter what I've tried, it either waits for what it's currently saying to finish before saying a new line, or it cuts off all lines but the last one before speaking.
I've tried say all by itself, with stopping current speech, without waiting until completion, or with both of those last 2 at once, like shown here:
say "TESTING" using "Agnes" with stopping current speech without waiting until completion
say "TESTING" using "Alex" with stopping current speech without waiting until completion
(Take off whatever endings you want, I don't even like those there.)
None of them worked. Also, putting a delay in between doesn't work either.
I've also tried saving applescripts that say something as their own scripts and opening those with a different one, like so:
run script file "Macintosh HD:Users:MY NAME:Library:Scripts:TESTING1.scpt"
run script file "Macintosh HD:Users:MY NAME:Library:Scripts:TESTING2.scpt"
    But that didn't work either.
I'm stuck and neither Google nor any Apple support threads I could find could help me.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

You can try a script I have, and work from that:
set anSwer to the text returned of (display dialog "What text do you want to say?" default answer "") as text
    set the_names to {"Fred", "Bruce", "Alex", "Albert", "Ralph", "Junior", "Vicky", "Agnes", "Kathy", "Princess", "Victoria"}
    repeat with this_name in the_names
              tell application "System Events"
                        try
                                  say "Using" & this_name & "'s  voice..., " & anSwer using this_name
                        on error
display dialog "Didn't Work" giving up after 3
                        end try
              end tell
    end repeat

The 6525 product description has this statement:

Looks like you have to use the HP ePrint app which is available in the App Store

Can I say one thing? The design of 3D is too confused!!! I know the drawing 3D and this new tools in Photoshop aren't simple, it's too difficult to understand

Photoshop's GUI for the 3d functionality has always been a bit of a bust. And slow, cumbersome, hard to control. Rendering quality remains a major headache (and slow as a snail crawling through mud). Texturing is a hassle, and the 3d viewport one of the worst implementations I have ever encountered.
Which is why I have always avoided it, and I prefer 3d applications such as Blender, Cinema4d, Max, Lightwave, and so on, for quality work. The 3d functionality in Photoshop is adequate for relatively simple 3d typography, and simple shapes. But even for that type of work I avoided Photoshop.

Hi, I have recently done some online updates and now I have to restart my mac each time for the stupid thing to recognise my internet settings. Any help gratefully accepted.

Please be specific about the updates.
Were they Apple updates from Software Update or were they downloaded updates, including 3rd party updates from a website (Including Apple's)?

  • I am trying to download Itunes to my new Toshiba computer and it keeps saying Apple Application Support suspended and won't let me "undo" so I say no and it doesn't install....any options or a?

I suspect that you are saying that you can't download/install the latest version of iTunes.
All I can say is try removing and reinstalling the Apple software using the following:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
If you have further problems with installing Itunes I suggest you post in the iTunes forum since you have an iTunes problem, not an iPod problem.  Also report the wording of any error messages. What they say is importent on resolving them.

  • Stupid thing .... have spent hours on trying to STOP the apps.. I have no 'setup' where it says

I have a hp photosmart 5510 All-in-one B111a When I installed my printer I chose one app to see how it works ....... I DON'T need or require this or any other app and I want to stop it asap.
I have tried to follow the instructions from the forum BUT what they are asking is not on my screen
Would it be too hard for HP to have a simple INSTALL/DELETE for their Apps? Ridiculous!
Can anyone explain simply how to be rid of it please
    Thank you

Cancel the application from the task manager.
Open Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar, and then clicking Start Task Manager.
or Incase the program is already installed on your computer then uninstall the application from the Control Panel
Open Programs and Features by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Programs and Features.
Select a program, and then click Uninstall. Some programs include the option to change or repair the program in addition to uninstalling it. but many simply offer the option to uninstall. To change a program, click Change or Repair. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    Note
If the program that you want to uninstall is not listed, it might not have been written for this version of Windows. To uninstall the program, check the information that came with the program.

  • How can i turn off the rotten restrictions, its so easy to turn on but impossible to turn the stupid thing off

i have been trying for days to turn restrictions off, but there is no easy way to do it, i dont have the password as i bought it from someone and they say they dont know it, it is stopping me from doing many things.
I am so frustrated with this I PAD it is not user friendly at all, sorry i bought it now, i found a message to tell me how to do a reset, which tells me to go to the summary button, but cannot find it anywhere, go to help and its no **** help at all, 144 pages of no help in the manual its totally confusing and make for computer geeks not the new users.
Is there someone out there that is smarter than the fools who set up IPADS in the first place. that can help me reset this dang thing b4 i throw it up the wall

I don't think that you will necessarily need recovery mode as long as it is only the restrictions Passcode that you need to reset.
First of all, you should be upset with the person that you sold you an iPad that had a restrictions Passcode that they could not remember. They put you in a bit of a bind. You have to erase the device and start over now, which is what the person that sold you the device should have done before they sold it to you.
Connect the iPad to any computer running iTunes - ideally your own if you have content that you want to sync. Launch iTunes. Click on the iPad name on the left sidebar under the devices heading. Click on the Summary Tab on the right. Click on the Restore button. This will restore the iPad to factory settings and erase the restrictions Passcode.
If you are running iTunes 11 - go to View>Show sidebar from the menu at the top of the screen so that you can see the iPad under the devices heading.
You absolutely must do this on a computer running iTunes or you will never be able to unlock the restrictions.
This explains how to restore, although I gave you the instructions above.

  • Have I done a really stupid thing?

    Hi
On a whim, I recently purchased a 20" Apple Cinema Display on ebay. Whilst the listing said it was faulty owing to a damaged power supply - that had been 'professionally repaired' - I thought it would be a good buy and I could get the problem diagnosed and hopefully just replace the power supply.
I won the auction and paid just £100 ($190) so I thought, even if I bought a new power supply, I would have a bargain.
The display arrived this morning and, apart from a few cosmetic marks on the casing, it's in pretty good condition, the LCD is unmarked. However, the 'professional repair' of the power supply looks to be a joke and the power adapter has been replaced with a very cheap looking black plastic box. In addition the DVI(?) connector appears to have been dismantled and put back together with sellotape!
I was under the impression that the power supply can simply be unplugged from the back of the display - a la my iMac - so I could test it using the power supply on a colleague's display in work, but this does not appear possible? (well, not easily anyway).
So, getting to the point, has anyone ever replaced the power supply on an ACD and how much did it cost? Also, I was expecting there to be a plug for a wall power outlet? Does the screen just connect to the DVI output on my powerbook? Do I need to plug in any of the USB/FW connections?
I realise I have been a bit naive buying 'sight unseen' but as I say it was on a whim - I don't even have a use for the display in mind at the moment. I'm usually the first person to say if something looks too good to be true it probably is, but I hope I haven't bought a complete waste of aluminium!
Be gentle with me - I hope someone can reassure me it can be repaired.
    Many Thanks
    Tim

Yes unfortunately the cable to the display is not detachable, It would be very convenient but would also make for a very complex connector to accommodate DVI, USB, FIreWire and Power all at once !!
I'm sure your actual display is ok... provided that cheap sounding power transformer hasn't fried it.
The cables of a new cinema display look like this:
    http://images.apple.com/displays/images/designsidebarcable20060721.png
from left to right: DVI, USB, FIreWire and Power on the far right.
The Power connector is Apple's proprietary connection and plugs into the power transformer, which in turn plugs into the mains.
So yes you should have a plug for a power outlet... (DVI doesn't power it). The USB and FireWire connectors don't have to be plugged in ... they just connect to the display to act as a hub with the ports on the back of the display... all that is required is the DVI and for the DIsplay to be powered.
I wouldn't recommend using whatever power transformer they have given you... if you can i would recommend trying to find an original power brick from apple... does the power cable still have the apple connector or have they stripped it to fit their adapter?
If the DVI connector looks that bad then you could get a new one and replace it yourself if your handy with the soldiering iron, just make sure you label the wires because theres a fair few. Or you might just want to open it up to check it's intact inside then seal it properly.

  • I have Windows 8 on a Dell laptop, i upgraded to 8.1 When i download iTunes, when i click finish, awindow pops up that says," Application support not found, uninstall iTunes and download again,Error 2" After 3times,it still says same thing.

Hello Community, I hope ya'll can help me. I have a Dell Laptop with a 32-bit Operating System, running Windows 8 with Media Center. I Upgraded to Windows 8.1 recently. Some of my Apps I had with Win. 8 were not compatible with 8.1. This next is my problem, When I install iTunes everything downloads fine until I click finish. @ windows pop up, 1 after the other. The 1st one says, " Application Apple Support not found, Uninstall iTunes and try download again. "  Then a second window says, " Error 2 ",  "The iTunes Application cannot run without the Apple Support ...."  What is this "Error 2" and is there a fix for this? I appreciate everyones knowledge in helping me come to a solution. as I aint no hi-tech redneck!    Thank you,  Bob Bryan

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if one component, such as Apple Application Support, won't install normally.
