Unexpected quit durning burn
I have a 58 min. project that burned fine once. After I made one change and tried to reburn, I have had 4 failed attempts. Each time, iDVD unexpectedly quits durning burning. Any suggestions?
How would I know if I have all of the iDVD upgrades?
Run software update within Software in System preferences. There is a most useful option for it to run automatically weekly.
Also, there are no special moving video features in the project. It is just an interview with my aunt, still pictures, transitions, 4 titles with background music, 3 chapter markers.
It's just possible that the background music is causing this. Check project info in iDVD and make sure the inks are still correct.
Should I repost my original message in hopes that someone else will answer?
Leave it a day or so, others may see it. It will show what you have tried.
Exactly at which stage does it quit and after how long?

IDVD unexpectedly quits and/or video freezes during burn
Please help! I'm going crazy trying to get a completed video project burned onto DVD. I have three video programs (one is a slide show), all created in Final Cut Pro and saved as either Final Cut Quicktimes or Quicktime movies using H264 compressor. The programs are imported into iDVD 4.0.1 (they cumulatively amount to less than one hour). Two different things are happening. Sometimes, iDVD churns for 16 hours, spits out the DVD, and says it unexpectedly quit. The DVD plays, but the slide show program freezes about 3/4 into (audio continues but video freezes). Other times, iDVD churns for hours and hours, only to quit and spit out a blank DVD.
This has never happened in the past. I've never before had trouble burning DVDs. The only change I recently made was this: I changed the name and password of the administrative account user. Also, this computer was iSync'd with another mac and about a week ago, all my preferences disappeared and programs opened as if for the first time (although nothing on the hard drive was lost).
Here's what I've tried: MacSweeper (although it has authenticaltion problems - I authenticate and then everytime I try to run it, it says it's not authenticated, so I can't tell if it's working), MacJanitor, I've checked all the preference settings and nothing comes up in error. I've also tried the Easter Egg approach and I got the same result (freeze 3/4 through).
Here's what I have: iMac G4, 800 MHz CPU, 1 GB memory, OS X (10.4.2), iDVD 4.0.1.
The slide show program is the only one messing up on the burned discs. Do you think it has anything to do with the new H264 compressor (in the past I've never used that, and the other two programs - which are fine on the DVD - are Final Cut Quicktimes).
Help me please - before I do something violent to this computer!!! Thanks for any advice.
ShannonThanks for your suggestions, David. My remaining issues are these, and anyone with ideas is welcome to chime in here:
First, I've never encountered this problem in the past, even with the same amount of available disc space. It seems like the Tiger upgrade is what's causing the problem, but so far it's been impossible to isolate. Has anyone heard anything about this or found a permanent solution?
On that same note, I understand what you're saying about an external drive. I don't have one, and it seems superfluous that I should need to spend money on one when this process worked fine a year ago. But I guess I'll try it if nothing else works better.
Second, fortunately, I wised up to the Disk Copy solution to make back-up copies of my ONE usable DVD. But I'm extremely concerned that I will encounter this same problem the next time I need to burn from iDVD. I have no idea why this one disc worked and all my other attempts failed. There must be something identifiable going on in all these similar cases, and it doesn't make sense to me that the permanent solution lies in somehow working AROUND iDVD instead of through it. And I guess I won't spend the money to upgrade to iLife '05 if the possibility exists that this problem will persist.
So there are my lingering concerns and frustrations. For now, I'm walking away from this project with exactly ONE useful DVD produced from iDVD out of approximately 20 attempts. Something's wrong with this picture. Ugh! -

Unexpected quits, missing themes, missing fonts and broken file paths
I created a project in iDVD 5 on the Powerbook at home, and then took the drive containing the project and all related files to my dad's office to burn it on his iMac G5 (the drive in the powerbook won't burn anything - separate problem). I put all the required files which were on the Powerbook's internal HD in a folder on the external HD, so that they could be reconnected at the office (when the "following files could not be found" dialog pops up).
However, when I opened the project on the G5, from iDVD, it told me that at least one of the themes I had used could not be found. "Ok," I thought, "which ones are they?"; clicking the "show details" triangle, I got the following message:
"The following themes, used by this project, are missing on your system:
(null)"
This occured a total of five times, before the "following files could not be found" dialog appeared. Some of them had been on my desktop or in my preferences on the powerbook, which I had copied into the aforementioned folder on the portable HD, but it could not find any of the movie files nor some of the image files, all of which had not changed position on the external HD since I started the project. I showed it where all of the files were, and then another message popped up telling me a font was missing. At this point it froze on the spinning coloured ball of death, before showing me an "unexpectedly quit" message. I have been through this so many times, even tried deleting the "com.apple.iDVD.plist" file, which didn't help. I am at a loss.
iMac G5 Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8) 2x 2 GHz Intel processorsWhat version of iDVD is on your Dad's computer. Since you have posted in the iDVD 6 forum, perhaps it is iDVD 6? That may be your problem because I would NOT expect a project created in iDVD 5 (as you have done) to work in iDVD 6.
If you had iDVD 6, I would have suggested you try creating an actual project archive out of iDVD (FILE>ARCHIVE PROJECT). The archive SHOULD contain all the elements you need to work on another computer. -
I have tried numerous times to finish this DVD. I have done this many times before and never encountered these problems. It get throught the menu processing, the slideshow and menu processing, but when it gets through the audio, and just about to burn disc, it unexpectedly quits. I am pressed for time and can't figure it out. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED
Hello, Nick (a fellow Greek?),
Welcome to the discussions.
Have you tried deleting iDVD's plist? Repairing permissions? Then restarting computer?
You don't say what country you are in, but this might help. Have a look at this thread regarding languages: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1573368
You also don't give any information regarding your computer system and the app versions you are using. Go to your 'public profile' to add these. Will help us out when trying to figure out a solution.
Some problems that prevent burning have to do with chapter markers. Do you have any? And, if so, have you followed the chapter marker rules:
1. No chapter markers within 2 seconds of the beginning or end of the movie.
2. No chapter markers on or within 2 seconds of any transition.
Also, what type of media are you using for burning? Verbatim DVD-R 4x or 8x highly recommended.
Can you 'save as disc image?' Saving as disk image allows you to see problems before actually burning to a DVD...saves wasted disks.
Have you tried redoing the iDVD project--creating a new project, dragging in your movie again, etc.?
These suggestions shouldn't take you very much time, and hopefully one of them will work for you. -
I'm running Mac OS X 10.3.9 and iDVD 6, and I know that's old software now, but I checked for software updates and it was just for GarageBand and iMovie. But every time I try to burn a DVD, it unexpectedly quits (right after it asks me to put a blank DVD in). How can I fix this? Do I need to buy the newest iLife and Snow Leopard?
Hi
Think it should work - see if You find help in my list
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
iMovie pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. *com.apple.iMovie.plist *
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
• Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
• Screen must be set to Million-colors
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
iMovie updated ?
QuickTime updated ?
Mac OS version ?
• Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
• Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.
Lennart Thelander
I run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac.

"Unexpected Quit" in Asset Encoding stage
Lately every time I have tried to make DVDs out of my iMovie projects it runs asset encoding for hours and then I get a "iDVD has unexpectedly quit" message. These are not huge movies and I have a lot of extra space on my G5 - I store other projects in an external firwire drive. I don't run other programs at the same time and I turn off my energy savers in preferences to avoid those interruptions. Right now the only way I can get my iDVD to burn is to export the whole movie back out to my camera and then import it back in from the camera as one long clip - this definitely lowers the quality of the images though - especially text. I am wondering if it has to do with volume adjustments in the clip sound - seems that is the main difference between what works and what won't. Any ideas?
It does sound like the Mac is overloaded by something. Have you run the maintenance scripts (I use MacJanitor) and then repaired permissions using Apple's Disk Utility/First Aid? This can often let the OS get untangled.

IDVD error message that iDVD unexpectedly quit.
iDVD error message that iDVD unexpectedly quit. Every time I share from iMovie to iDVD and begin the burn process it comes back with an error message that iDVD has unexpectedly quit. It did not seem to do this before I loaded iLife. How do I resolve this? One thing I do know is that I am limited in hard drive space and I am clearing some of this up until I can purchase a larger hard drive. I have an external hard drive but I am using the internal hard drive to build the movie. [email protected]
Power Mac G4 1.25GHz PowerPC G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 1MB DDR SRAM per processor, 1GB PC2700 DDR SDRAM, 80GB Ultra ATA/100 7200 rpm Hard DriveHi Ron,
Been to S.N.O.B.? I love that restaurant!!!
This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
You'll need to reset some Preferences.
But I think your real problem is probably free space on your start-up drive, based on your comments. You should have 20GB+ free. -
IDVD 4.0.1 quits when burning using Tiger
I have been using iDVD for years and it has worked perfectly for all of that time. I recently upgraded to the new Tiger OS and since then I have been having problems.
I have a flat panel iMac with a 800 MHz G4 processor & 758 MB of RAM.
Every time I try to burn a disc it quits. Since it takes so long to encode I usually start burning before I go to bed and (expectedly) every morning when I check on it there is a message saying that "iDVD has unexpectedly quit". The dvds work when I play them, but for some reason I am unable to make copies. This is very inconvenient because I make wedding videos and usually need to make several copies and I can't afford to take 8-12 hours for every copy I need.
There seems to be a problem of compatibility between iDVD 4.0.1 and OS X 10.4.2
I see that other people have been having this same problem. Is Apple doing anything to fix it?Just thought I should post back and let you know that I seem to be up and running again! Many thanks for all your help. I read through everything, and tried several of the suggested fixes.
First of all, I rebuilt the movie part of the project by importing the movie from the finder, rather than through iMovie. I tried a burn, but still nothing doing.
I then cleaned up a bit, as I did not have the apparently neccessary 20Gb of space- I had 17, so I deleted older files until I had 20.5Gb.
I then trashed the iDVD prefs, ran MacJanitor, Repaired Permissions, and restarted the computer.
Then, first try, my disc burned in a little over 15 minutes! Expecting the worst, I watched the whole thing on my DVD player (a 5 minute movie, and 4 slidehows with music and transitions), and it worked perfectly. I immmediately tried a second burn, and again it worked no problem.
Am I just lucky?
Again, thanks for all the advice posted here! -
The application IDVD 4.0 has unexpectedly quit
After have made my DVD movie everything is working, except for the burning of DVD, because when I press down the Burn button suddenly iDVD 4.0 crash and says " The application iDVD has unexpected quit".
Please is anybody there who can help me?Hi Hugo
1. Do You have upgraded QuickTime to v.7 if not don't, else downgrade to
6.5.2
2. Do You have enough free space on Your hard disk eg 20Gb recommended

IDVD unexpectedly quits after clicking "Save as Disc Image"
I want to author and burn a DVD, but my iBook doesn't have a DVD-burner.
Unfortunately iDVD 5 (or 5.0.1 build 26) quits unexpectedly after I click "Save as Disc Image". The system offers me to send a report to Apple which I have done a dozen of times.
The error report looks like this: http://lepo.it.da.ut.ee/~aloola/idvdunexpectedlyquits2.html
My iBook came with Panther and iDVD installed. Since I did not need it initially I deleted it to save disk space. A few weeks ago I upgraded to Tiger. A few days ago I needed to author a DVD. I reinstalled iMovie and iDVD from my Panther install discs (the upgrade to Tiger DVD does not contain them). iMovie seems to work just fine. I captured the video (about 23minutes) from camera and after adding chapter marks launched an iDVD project from iMovie. The authoring worked fine as well. Up to the point where I need to save my dvdproject as disc image. iDVD just quits.
So I tried reinstalling it, changing preferences, creating a project with a small .mov file (25MB), repairing permissions, using using the "'Pfurz' and 'Hurz'" files etc. Nothing seems to make it work. I have 15GB of free space on my hard drive and it is very hard for me to free some more. Anyway space shouldn't be an issue, if I try to save a dvdproject that only contains a short (2:30) movie trailer. There should be plenty of room for rendering and saving this small disc image.
I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice what to try next. I am out of ideas and frustrated about having bought a program with my iBook, that is virtually useless without this "Save as Disc Image" feature working.
Is there a direct way to contact Apple support by email to notify them about this issue and receive official feedback whether it will be repaired or if my computer perhaps need some "repairing"?aloola,
Welcome to the iDVD forum!
after adding chapter marks
Make sure your chapter markers conform to these rules:

changing preferences....repairing permissions
I know you've done it before, but it's a good idea to delete the iDVD plist file anytime iDVD unexpectedly quits, so do it again.
15GB of free space
In your case (only 23 minutes of movie) I'd have to agree that 15GB should be enough. But do everything you can to get more space anyway.
Sometimes movies themselves have some glitch in them that is causing iDVD to crash. Make another short dummy iMovie (just use some Ken Burns clips) and see if you can "Save as Disk Image" Also check to make sure there isn't "extra" audio that extends beyond the end of the video in iMovie, as this has been known to cause problems.
Try creating a new user and see if that user can "Save as Disk Image"
Is there a direct way to contact Apple support by email
No you call Applecare (by phone) if your Mac is still eligible.

IMovie Unexpectedly quitting when trying to select a clip
I am suspecting that I may have a corrupted project. Then again, it could just be a major problem with my Mac. At one point during my import, iMovie unexpectedly quit. I was able to reopen the project and continue the import. Once the import was complete, I attempted to click on a clip, and boom! iMovie unexpectedly quit. I reopened, and was asked to move the clips to the clipboard and all went well. I even was able to save the project. Still any time I select any clip, iMovie unexpectedly quits. For reference, here is a portion of the dialog of the crash:

Any suggestions on where I might begin solving this issue?
Quicksilver Dual 1.33GHz G4 {upgrade} Mac OS X (10.3.9) Blue & White 400MHz G3 {for the kids} Mac OS X (10.3.9)My standard list of things to do first for these weird sort of problems, but I also tend to run these before I go to burn an iDVD project just to be safe. Keep in mind this list represents the programs I tend to use. I am running Panther (10.3.9) so Tiger users might want to check the below list for compatibility. There are several alternate programs that do the same things with some combining the functions of some of the ones below. So everyone has their favorites, but here are mine...
Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system, especially any external drives that you use for iMovie and iDVD projects.
Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
Reboot your Mac (after running Cache Out X you are given the option to restart the machine).
If you still can not get it to run correctly, next thing to try is to throw out the iMovie preference file (don't forget to change back those preferences you want different from the defaults next time you run it). If it still doesn't work, then I would suggest you reinstall iMovie.

IDVD 4.0.1 "unexpectedly quits"
I have a dual 450 Mhz G4 running 10.3.9, 1.3 gig of ram, 30 gig HD w/ about 19gig of free space, an NEC 3520A internal dvd/cd burner. I am attempting to burn the tutorial dvd project within iDVD but i have gotten the "application unexpectedly quits" message. The first time it came up was after 12 hours of being in stage 4, the next occurance was after 26 hours in stage 4. The ONLY reason why im' trying to burn this is because on my own imovie project of 15 minutes it continualy got stuck in stage 4 as well and i had read somewhere in these forums that it is suggested to burn the tutorial to get an idea of how long a burn will take on my individual system.
I have installed patchburn, installed the 'easter egg', ran cashoutX, mac janitor, disc utitlity to repair permissions, preferential treatment, deleted pfiles for idvd/ imovie. restarted before burning and clicked burn once and then again after i saw the radiation symbol and waited for the prompt to feed a dvd to it.
I'd like to know if maybe my slow system bus is what is holding things up and causing the crash. I have been considering purcahsing a G4 laptop or a G5 DP desktop but don't quite have the $$ so i would prefer to just upgrade my system if that is all it needs to do this type of video work. HELP!!!! plzzzzI have installed patchburn, installed the 'easter egg', ran cashoutX, mac janitor, disc utitlity to repair permissions, preferential treatment, deleted pfiles for idvd/ imovie. restarted before burning and clicked burn once and then again after i saw the radiation symbol and waited for the prompt to feed a dvd to it.
You have covered most points but you should also make sure no other applications are running and ideally restart the system before the "burn". You might like to look at my strategy as a checklist

"unexpectedly quits" on launch; iDVD3 & iDVD4
Only used iDVD on occasion, but some months ago iDVD3 got the "unexpectedly quits" error when I would start it, either from the dock or from iMovie. I didn't attempt to use it for quite a while, but now would like to get back to burning movies on dvd.
Have deleted the .plist file, then repaired permissions, but same problem. Restored the program from the "software install" disk, but same problem. Finally upgraded to iLife '04, but iDVD4 encounters the same error when started, even though the iLife '04 install went without a hitch.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Steve in Calif.I think you need to reinstall the OS to fix that one.

Unexpected quit when sharing imovie
I am making a video using iMovie 09'. Everything goes well except i want to view the project in full screen AND when i want to share it. Whenever i click the 'play project full-screen' button, it shows the message saying 'unexpected quit of iMovie'.... and even worse... i want to share the project and burn it into CD. But everytime i tried to click Share > iDVD / media browser / export movie / export using quick time, iMovie quits unexpecdectly!!
Any ways to solve this problem? Urgent !!!
Many thanks in advance!!OK
Then what differs You from me is in use of file formats.
I use
• Video - streamingDV (.dv from miniDV tape Camera), AIC
• Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz from Audio-CD
• Photos - .jpg
the format of the videos i used is avi., mp4 and mov
.avi is a container and can contain many codecs that do not work with iDVD - has to be converted - I guess that Flip4Mac might do this - SEVERE Guess
.mp4 - also a container not to be mistaken for .mpeg4 which is a codec - and it’s most often could contain a H.264 encoded material (PS3 and AppleTV)
.mov - This too is a container
SO You must open them with QuickTime Player and open inspector and read Codec is:
audio are all mp3
• I use Audacity (free on intenet) to convert to .aiff
• One can go via iTunes and burn out an Audio-CD .aiff (not .mp3)
photos are jpg
• Mine too are .jpg
Most probably one of Your video-clip is in a format iDVD can not re-encode into kind of .mpeg2 for DVD
