Unhappy T-61 CTO owner

I thought I would let you know that my boss has a XPS M1330 with a internal video chip issue that is the same as the problems we are experiencing with our SBB NVIDIA QUADRO NVS 140M. He emailed Dell and this is how they responded:
"Thank you for contacting Dell XPS Hardware Support.  I see that you are referring to your Dell XPS M1330 with Windows Vista on it.
From your email I see that the computer has issues with the video card. Please be assured as I will do my best to assist you with the issue.
I apologize for the delay in response.  The delay is due to high volume of emails.
We tried reaching you on 253- --- ---- but could only reach voice mail.
I see from the computer records that the system warranty has expired on 08-13-2009.  However we would assist you with the issue as one time exception.  As you have confirmed that the issue is with the video card, we have decided to pull the computer to the depot.
You need to send the computer to the depot where our technicians would replace the motherboard(the video card is embedded on the motherboard).
I request you to provide the following information so that we can send you an empty box for depot repair"
I own a T60P widescreen CTO 8743 and a Idea Center both of which operate very well. I love my Thinkpads but I am very discouraged about the T61. It looks like DELL is stepping up to the plate. Why can't Lenonvo? I have tried several times to talk to Support but to no avail. Lenovo Support has always been good to me but they will not budge on this issue.
I know there are a lot of disappointed T61 owners out there. What else can I (we) do?

Glad to see dell is following in lenovo's footsteps. Lenovo did the same thing, fixed thousands, but they stopped in march 2011. My guess is it just got too costly. I suspect dell will do the same at some point.
I can't speak to what lenovo has done, should have done, will do, but I will tell you that I too lost a unit to this, so I know how you feel. What I can do is offer you some help/advice if you want to fix this yourself. There is a vast supply of used units and parts available for these model, and fixing one can easily be accomplished anywhere from $50-200, depending on your options and sources for the parts.
I recommend you read the last 5-10 pages of the topic started by Mark Lenovo, about 1long 2short beeps from a t61p. We've discussed much of this at legnth.

  • Installation now not working, grrr

OMG I am sooooo frustrated! I am using a 5th gen ipod (30g) and for one night I was able to download songs into my ipod. Then it prompted me to update, and I did like most of you did, and now Itunes, nor windows recognises my Ipod.
I was able to use the Ipod running on my friends computer, with a fresh install, but not my own. I have deleted itunes, updater, and quicktime and reinstalled about 10 times. Sometimes I even get errors trying to use the installation cd. Now, the installationn goes thru but it only will install the updater, not itunes or quicktime grrr...
I am normally a patient person, but this has worn me out. I have tried everything mentioned here and support just about. I am wondering since my Ipod is less than a week old, if I should return it and then I will have a fresh cd, or will Best Buy even accept the return since there are songs on it still and it's not in 'perfect condition' as when I bought it.
Btw..I can't even restore my ipod. I open up the updater, plug in my ipod and the selections are greyed out.

  • N8 - ringing no name no photo

    Hi
I am the (unhappy, for several reasons) owner of an Nokia N8,  after uploading/synchronizing all outlook contacts with photos and phone numbers, when one of the contacts calls me the phone only shows the phone number without name and photo.  Is this the way it is supposed to be.?  I dont think so as some days ago it still worked perfectly... at least..for the photo and names of the incoming calls.
Why is this phone not showing names and photos of incoming callers anymore?  Does anybody have an idea?
    Kind regards
    Nomic.

This normally happens if there are two contacts with the same phone no.
The phone can't decide which to display so displays neither which isn't really a fault and has occurred on many previous phones.
It is usually syncing that causes the problem, you can end up with two versions of the same contact with only a minor difference.

  • Each time my iPad updates it looses all applications that I have downloaded

Each time, Apple sends message to download new updates, I comply.  Each time, it confirms that it is backing up my current iPad.  Each time it dumps my music, and every app I have purchased and each time I have to reload everything manually.  Is this system of downloads that bad or am I to ingnore all future updates?  Please advise,  a very unhappy 3 apple device owner.

    I agree with Rudegar.
Check the Apple ID used by iTunes on your computer to make sure if it is the same Apple ID beings used by your iPad.

  • New 2014 X1 Carbon owner very unhappy.

I received my new X1 model (i7 Haswell Touchscreen) a couple days ago and here are my thoughts
    - BAD keyboard. I just don't know what Lenovo was thinking! The feeling of the buttons is ok, but I'm constantly having to look down at it. The Home, End, Delete, Backspace placements aren't intuitive and have caused many errors.
    - Adaptive Keys are nonsensical!!! I thought we were going to be able to program them? They're constantly changing and flickering.. just a huge annoyance. If you have browswers, MS programs, PS, and other programs open at the same time it's a nightmare! And the LCD strip is a bit cheap looking too.
    - Screen: The images lack sharpness and text is blurry at times! Brightness and Color replication are decent, but both could be much better. There's some edge light bleed as well which you'll notice on black screens and 16:9 content. My wife has a Mac and her screen is just so much better. The X1 screen is also pretty reflective for what it claims to be "non-reflective".
    - Trackpad.. it has decent feedback & gliding, but I'm missing the buttons a lot more than I thought I would when I first saw the design. I wouldn't say I hate it, but I don't much enjoy it either.
    - Gesture Controls: these are pretty silly and limited. There's also too much lag. They're mildly fun to play around with once, but I would never use them again.
    Conclusion:
I have owned 5 different ThinkPads over time and have been very loyal to IBM & ThinkPad over the years, but I simply can not recommend the new X1 to anyone for serious business purposes. There's too many interface areas that hamper your production. I'm very disappointed with this release by Lenovo.
Of course if you're more of a casual media user, then the X1 wouldn't be for you. The X1 line is supposed to cater to business users, but Lenovo has actually hurt that experience here.
The build is the only thing I'm relatively satisfied with - it's pretty solid and nice to the touch. And I've always preferred a 14" screen size. But these two things aren't nearly enough for this i7 machine and its price. Bottom line, there's too many functionality issues that I can't get over. It's just not an enjoyable user experience.
If Lenovo would've just made this with the X1 Gen 1's keyboard and touchpad, I would've liked it so much more. Unfortunately, the Gen 1's screen was so horrible that I ruled it out a long a time ago.

What astonishes me the most about the new X1 Carbon keyboard is the removal of the Insert key.
I'm looking at the programs I have running right now and use every day, and all of the following have important keyboard shortcuts that use the Insert key, either by itself or combined with other keys:
    IntelliJ IDEA
    Komodo IDE
    Visual Studio 2013
    SmartGit/Hg
    SecureCRT
    Microsoft Excel
    Take Command
    Beyond Compare
    pgAdmin III
    Paintshop Pro X6
I guess ThinkPad users aren't expected to use programs like these any more.

  • Unhappy z1 Compact owner

Owned a Z1 Compact now for 12 months and it has been repaired twice and replaced once all for the same issue. It is obviously a common faulty with the product but Sony say that due to it being replaced already it is back in the repair cycle and needs to be looked at by their technicians.  I feel the overall aftersales from Sony is terrible as not even an apology has been offered.  I have even offered to pay for an upgrade but this has been declined and I have been advised to speak to my network provider about an upgrade to which I made Sony aware that it was actually their product which was faulty and still under the manufacturers warranty. I just get the feeling that you are trying to dodge the issue by having it repaired because if it was bought from a store they would be quite happy to allow you to pay money to upgrade or exchange the product especially with the history surrounding it. Expecting a phone call back from escalations this morning who are not very empathetic or customer focused at all but rest assured that if I dont get a satisfactory outcome I will be escalating the issue myself to means outside of Sony.

I agree. If I read this forum before I would have never bought a SONY mobile phone. Z1C is my first and last Sony phone - that is for sure.

  • New K1 owner unhappy with GPS

What's the deal with the GPS on my new K1?  It never can get a lock on satellites no matter how long I leave it out in the open sky.
Is there a software fix for this or should I consider warranty return / replacement?

I tested it (stood under the sun for 5 minutes) Google maps was unable to get a lock ... Download a app called GPS test, the app was able to get a lock on 6 satellites ...
Will escalate a case to engineering.

  • Is Verizon unwilling or unable to fix problem with Account Owner(s)

A forum or Google search reveals several customers unhappy with how Verizon treats the account owners... count me as one.  I'm sure there are many more customers who were equally unhappy but just accept Verizon's incompetence and complete the unnecessary gymnastics of un-registering accounts and then re-registering with a new username.
    PROBLEM:
There are numerous scenarios that can cause a My Verizon account to have the Account Owner be listed with an incorrect telephone number.  In my case, I had an account with AT&T and 3 additional numbers associated.  As each account expired, I transferred the numbers to Verizon.  The first account transferred was my 14yr old son.  I registered a My Verizon account for management (my name & my userid) and eventually added the additional numbers, however, the Account Owner's phone number is listed as my son's cell.
Over the past 2 years (since I migrated to Verizon), I've had small problems with account notifications and other information being text to my son's cell.  I've called numerous times and customer service says it's corrected, but eventually the problems return.  Recently, I upgraded my phone and started using some new services like Backup Assistant and the fact that the Account Owner is associated with an incorrect number has caused even more trouble.
I simply want to keep my existing username for My Verizon and correct the cell phone number associated as the Account Owner.  This should be extremely simple.
    VERIZON'S SOLUTION:
"We can't do it".  "Our systems don't allow us to make this change".
The Customer Service Department (or Lack of Customer Service Department) tells me that since they can't or are unwilling to do the necessary changes, their only solution is to force their customer to do their work.  They will un-register the account and I can register again.  There is no concern for the preferences of an existing customer (almost 3 years); there is no concern for the inconvenience caused to an existing customer who spends hundreds of dollars each month and thousands of dollars each year (I currently have 2 separate accounts with Verizon, 4 phones on my problem account and 4 phones on another for a total of 8 phones with data plans... do the math); there is no concern that I will now have to use a completely different username one that is no longer uniform with my other accounts; there is no concern that I will have to change any and all services that reference My Verizon.  Quite simply... Verizon Wireless shows their Account Owners that they have no concern for us.
    PROPER SOLUTION:
I have almost 25 years of Information Technology experience and over 3 years working with Call Centers (similar to Verizon's Customer Service), which explains in part why I find this so frustrating...  the fix for this is SIMPLE!!!  The real problem is that Verizon simply doesn't care enough to fix it because we are existing customers and not new customers.
Without going into specifics (nor could I since I don't have access to their systems), data for the My Verizon portal is contained within modifiable databases.  These relational databases will be tied to other systems and other databases, but a modification of this type would just require that the portal be allowed to make the update to the appropriate field(s) within the appropriate database(s).  If direct access is not attainable because of their design, it is still not too difficult to write an additional process to accommodate this change.  These types of things are done everyday.
More importantly, even if Verizon was unable or unwilling to make these programming changes...  I have no doubt that if Customer Service has an escalation process to their I.T. Department that a programmer with access to the application(s) and/or database(s) could easily make the change directly and almost immediately.
    CONCLUSION:
Until now, my experience with Verizon has been mostly positive even to the point of recommending the carrier to friends and family.  I've found their coverage area to meet my needs and the data speeds to be more than satisfactory.  However, Verizon needs to remember that cellular service has essentially become a commodity and that customer retention is often based on other things than simply providing dial tone.  With a monthly cell phone expense that rivals a car payment, I would think that Verizon would be more than willing to accommodate such a simple request to maintain a satisfied customer.
If you too are one of the many customers having issue with modifying the Account Owner, just resolve yourself that it appears Verizon is unwilling to make the simple correction to the My Verizon portal to satisfy our request.

I'm not 100% sure that I follow your reasoning, so please correct me if I misstate your opinions.  I've numbered them so it will be easier to identify any mistakes I make.
    1.  Not allowing a user, customer service representative, or any Verizon representative to change the cell phone number associated with the Account Owner to another cell phone number on the same account is a security risk.
I'm not suggesting that I be allowed to change the name, social security number, or any other pertinent details related to establishing the original account.  All the information pertaining to who is responsible for the bill remains the same with the single exception that the current associated cell phone number be changed to another number already listed on the account.  In what possible manner is this a security risk?  Frankly if the ability was enabled and someone either by mistake or incompetence made such a change the impact would simply be what I'm currently experiencing (inconvenience).  Since in this hypothetical situation the ability to change this value is enabled, the "inconvenience" would easily be re-mediated by returning the value to its original state.
Furthermore, if there is some "security risk" that I'm over looking then an organization that is concerned about providing quality customer service would create procedures to accommodate customer requests and meet security requirements.  Let's use a bank (with an obvious security vulnerability) and debit cards as an example.  If I lose my debit card, I cannot go to my computer and print out a temporary debit card (very user friendly, but not secure).  Some banks will allow you to go online and cancel the lost debit card while requesting a new one to be mailed to the address you have on file (user friendly and mostly secure).  To solve this same problem at other banks might require you to go into the office and sign a form cancelling the lost debit card and confirming the address to mail you a new one (less user friendly, but highly secure).  The Verizon equivalent, is me requesting that I add an existing bank account to my online banking and being told "We can't do it".  However, because the bank cares so much about keeping me as a customer... they will delete my account, allow me to create another, possibly losing my historical data, have me change my username that I've been using for years, spend time adding all my online bill payments... all for the pleasure of staying their customer and getting to use their services as they should have been designed.
    2.  Making a software change that would allow users or CSR's to associate a different cell phone number on the account to the current Account Owner would be difficult and require downtime.
You give some time expounding this thought and I'm unaware of your web, application, and/or database experience... but I will try to address your concerns later.  However, let's assume that you are correct and these changes will be difficult ("taking weeks to months").  The purpose of my post was whether Verizon was unwilling or unable to accommodate this customer request.  You seem to be agreeing that Verizon is unwilling to make these changes, or at the very least, feel that Verizon has decided that the time and expense involved is of more importance than correcting an issue impacting their customers.  I personally find the later equally disheartening as this has been an issue for many customers (you yourself mention experiencing the problem) and has been well documented through previous forum and Internet posts.  Even by your estimations, if they had taken previous customer complaints seriously... this would have been fixed by now.  Once again it seems the obvious answer is that Verizon may not consider customer service as an important factor as I do.
As far as your technology issues, I agree that more than a web page change would be required.  I do take issue with comparing the change of a distributed application (operating system) that must be designed to support enumerable hardware components to the work required to makes changes to a web portal with a back-end in-house database.  You could write an entire book detailing the differences between these two scenarios as they have very little in common, but I'll try to keep it focused to your points.
    Coding
Coding an Operating System that must run on literally a multitude of hardware configurations and support an unending diversity of applications is an incredible endeavor and really never a finished product.  Changes to an OS are constantly being made and the developers must consider hardware and software that they are not intimately familiar and occasionally even deal with 3rd parties to facilitate changes.
The change I'm advocating has a web component which would be replicated throughout their web server topology, however, these are items that Verizon's developers deal with routinely (if not daily).  There are a very limited number of 3rd party concerns (a few different browsers, IE, Chrome, Mozilla & a disparate platforms such as PC, tablet, phone).  A little research in the benefits of web portals (and cloud computing) verses distributed applications will clearly outline the drastic differences.  A simple illustrative question (though maybe not a completely fair analogy) is how many people do you know who can code an operating system and how many people get on GoDaddy and create their own web pages.  I'm not trying to insinuate that anyone who knows a little HTML can make the web portal changes, however, this isn't a difficult project for an experienced developer.
The bigger issues and ones that I alluded to in my original post are the changes that would be required to Verizon's back-end databases.  The changes that would need to be made mostly likely involve multiple databases and assuming they are using a typical relational database design might require changes to key fields, adding new databases/tables, and exhaustive integrity checks.  This isn't something that an average user could sit down and accomplish in an hour, however, these are simply the routine day-to-day duties of any professional database developer.
Again I reiterate... this change simply involves allowing someone (either a user, CSR, or other Verizon agent) to readily change an index record or records that correlates Account Owner to cell phone number.  In terms of database management this should be simple.
    Debugging & Deployment
The debugging/testing of changes made to an Operating System are amazingly complex for all the aforementioned reasons.  The deployment of such changes is even more complex in that you've got to develop the mechanism to push these changes out to the entirety of the user community.  I'll address deployment (or as you said dispersal) of this change because it's the easiest... quite simply there isn't one.  The benefit of having a centralized web portal like My Verizon is that users come to you, not the other way around, and any change made will immediately be accessible by the user community.  There is a deployment aspect in that My Verizon doesn't exist on a single web server, but again this is just the typical topology for a portal of this size and not relevant to our discussion.  Debugging/Testing is an important aspect of any change and certainly Verizon has this methodology in place, however, I'll reiterate that this change should not be complex and shouldn't require extensive testing.  We've also already discussed the fact that any debugging/testing only has to take place on a limited number of platforms.
    Downtime
If adding the ability to change the relationship of the Account Owner to an associated cell phone number requires any downtime... the person responsible for Verizon's Development, Beta, and Production environments should be fired.  There is simply no way this is even a possible concern.  I've dealt with many companies with far less resources than Verizon and I assure you that changes of this nature would never require down time.  I'm sure they have staff in place whose sole responsibility is to work on their continuity plan.  This is a non issue.
    Other Carriers
You can't possibly know how all carriers operate, though you may have some past experience with other companies.  I would contend (and maybe I'm too optimistic) that a company with a focus on customer satisfaction when made aware of complaints and/or limitations in their service would seek to rectify the issue.  It's quite possible that whatever other company you are referencing has fixed this issue if indeed it was similar... especially since I've hopefully bolstered my opinion that the resolution is not overly complicated.
Would you mind telling me if you deleted your 2 original comments to my post before I had an opportunity to answer?  The reason I ask is that last night another user (jimfitzgerald) had posted a comment and I replied.  He later posted a 2nd comment and while writing my response... all the posts were removed (his 2 posts, my reply, and your 2 posts).  I'm curious if this was just a user withdrawal (though I really wish my response had remained in the thread), if there was some sort of technical issue with these forums last night, or if my response was deleted for cause by Verizon or other admin.   Thanks!

Does anyone know if Apple will make the 512GB flash upgrade available for the 2011 macbook air owners?  I know that you can order it through CTO on the newly announced Airs but it would be amazing if Apple made it available for 2011 air owners.
    TIA for any responses.

Apple doesn't make any upgraded SSD's available for the MBA.
You will have to consider aftermarket, such as is available at macsales.com
They have a 480 GB available.

  • How do I replace someone else's Mac ID with my own? Bought iPhone second hand. Previous owner re-set the phone but his ICloud account stayed on now my phone. He uses his macID on his new iPhone now?? Any ideas, as this issue is blocking my access to iTune

How do I replace someone else's Mac ID with my own?
Bought iPhone second hand on TradeMe.
Previous owner re-set the phone but his ICloud account stayed on now my phone. He uses his AppleID on his new iPhone now and, understandably, does not want to give me his password. Any ideas?? Please.
This issue is blocking my access to iTunes and any other file from my home computer. It keeps on telling me that I have to autorise my computer to pass on files, yet, it seems, for all this to happen, I need to get logged in through the phone's Apple ID. This of course is different to my one on my computer - and I have no password for it.
This phone is not stolen!! I payed still a fair bit for it. Am still in contact with the previous owner. He doesn't know how to fix the problem either.
    Would appreciate any suggestion ????
    Thanks

    Settings>general>resets>erase all content and settings.
That will put it back to its out of the box state. Set it up with your own apple Id.

  • Used iPad, new owner, can't clear it & log in my ID.

I was given a used iPad. I need to reset it for my own Apple ID. I don't have their restriction code. How do I do this?
The answer I found so far in the archives pointed me to the General/Reset/Erase All content and Settings buttons, but a Passcode screen popped up and I had to stop after 2 failed guesses. Former owner, who is 90,  had it set up by her daughter. Her daughter set it up with her own account ID, etc. I emailed her to ask for the Passcode, but if she doesn't know it, I don't know how to proceed. I signed into iCloud, but when I go to open that, it asks for my password only, with her iCloud ID already input and no way to input mine instead.
I was able to change the iCloud sign in to my own account, so I don't want to accidentally erase that.
I am writing this on my laptop. Please help, if only to link me to a better archived answer. Thank you.

If the original owner cannot remember the password and cannot erase the device for you, then it is now and always be useless. There is nothing that you can do now to make it yours if she can't remember the passcode to erase it.
This is what the original owner needs to do.

  • Possible to connect an external monitor to HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC

I have a HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC model # A1M02AV and it has a VGA port, one that looks like a phone/broadband cable port, and one that looks like a USB port but indented on either side at the bottom. Can I even connect an external monitor? How do I find out if I have more than 1 video card? Besides the usual USB/headphone ports, I don't have any other ports. It says my drivers are up to date...but I don't even know what I should be looking for. Do I need to install something or buy some sort of adapter?
I am trying to connect a Dell external montitor via the VGA port with a VGA cable. The monitor has power but my notebook does not recognize/detect it. However, when I first plugged it in, my notebook display shrank into a square (vs the whole screen) so it recognized something...but nothing happened on the external monitor.
I tried detecting it via my display settings, but  I accidentally changed some dispaly setting so that the home desktop only shows on monitor 1, but unselected my actual notebook display or something or changed it to be monitor 2 (even though monitor 1 does not exist), so when I plug the cable in to my notebook, all of a sudden my desktop goes away and it's a just a blank background screen - and I cannot access the computer display settings or anything.... when the cable is unplugged this setting looks normal, so I can't figure out how to fix it.
Sorry, I have no idea what I'm doing here - please help!

    Hi,
All Dell monitors come with CD's for drivers. Your laptop may not know the monitor w/o its driver, it won't install automatically. Please check:
Ringht click a blank space on desktop,
    Click Personalize
    Click Display
    Click Change display settings
Can you see BOTH laptop screen and external monitor in there as shown on the following image:
For testing, I put my Dell monitor is my main display. If I can't see 2 monitor, you need its driver first and then check the cable.
    Regards.

I called the customer care regarding this and they asked me to visit the service center. The service center people told me that my recovery disks are not working properly. I am not convinced as they have been used just once before, they seem to be fine and I dont want to order another set of DVDs without being sure that thats the solution.

  • Songs on Owner's ipod cannot be updated because playlists no longer exist

I recently uploaded new CDs into my itunes library. When I tried to sync it said that it could only sync an owner's selection. I agreed because I was in a hurry. Later I came back to delete some of the songs that I do not use and I get the message "Songs on Owner's ipod cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist." I tried to delete some of the unused playlists and now my ipod is blank with not a single song on it. I want to get my playlists back and my music back.

You will have to create a couple of new playlists to use to sync your iPod, then your iPod preferences will need to be change to sync on those specific playlists.

  • Attn: ALL APPLE PORTABLE OWNERS -Macbook Pro, MacBook Air Apple portable slowdown / kernel high CPU solution

Attn: ALL APPLE PORTABLE OWNERS -MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini slowdown kernel / high CPU use problem and solution.
YOU COULD FRY YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU DO NOT FIX THIS PROBLEM SO PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE!
    YOUR MAC WILL THANK YOU
    Hey all.
Like many of you I've got a newer Apple portable which slows down to an unusable level for an unknown reason. In my case a 13" mid 2009 Intel MacBook Pro Core 2 duo laptop. After many failed attempts to figure out what this nutty problem is I have discovered the problem, the solution and I have solved this for my own MacBook Pro. Since this fix it has been working immediately and consistently -without issue
I am sharing this with you in hopes that you to can fix your Apple portable yourself or so you know what to tell the Apple techs so they can quickly fix your Mac from this wacky and unfortunate kernel CPU hogging problem.
    User Software Symptoms :
Your Apple portable computer periodically for an unknown reason slows down making everything frustratingly slow. This happens even when running previous apps that were never a problem; things that your Mac should be able to handle easily but for some reason now it can't.
Slowdown most often happens during high CPU use such as gaming, video playback/editing, etc. or when running multiple apps (even non CPU intensive apps) at the same time.
    Possible Hardware Symptoms:
Your computer is making more noise than it did previously.
Your computer occasionally makes more noise but then gets quieter.
Your computer is always extremely quiet (too quiet) even during high CPU apps -worst case scenario.
It feels hotter than it normally does. Test: After several minutes of the slowness/high kernel CPU touch the computer to feel if it's hotter than normal.
Looking at Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder) shows the kernel_task is going bonkers eating up CPU but you have no idea why.
After trying many different things to solve this problem such as :
PR ram reset, SMC reset, fresh OS install of 10.5 and 10.6 on external hard-drives, calling and speaking to various Apple tech people who had no ideas/solutions, etc. I had no luck.
Btw, if you're having the symptoms I've decscribed above I would not run the Apple Hardware check (read below as to why). You could fry your Mac!
After much testing I found the problem :
It is my belief that "recent" Apple portable computers are using low quality internal fans which soon stop working!
Fail time period seems to be about 1.0 years to 2.5 years of use but this fail rate could vary depending on use.
First noticeable symptoms (depending on what you notice) could be computer slowdown or your fan is making more noise than it normally does. This is your fan's lubrication slowly eroding making your fan spin slower and less smooth resulting in the louder noise and slower rpm spin speed. The slower fan spin speed means less cooling is happening for your computer. The effect on your computer is that the CPU and other chips are heating up! Overheating to be more specific. When your computer's chips overheat they get wonky and screw things up. Most often this seems to have the effect of making the kernel hog CPU resulting in a frustratingly slow user experience! Heat kills computer chips and it is extremely bad for them. Extreme overheat or repeated overheating has been said to shorten the life of computer chips or in extreme cases even fry them completely!
The longer this goes on without being fixed your fan loses more lubrication and spins slower and slower cooling lesser and lesser resulting in your CPU heating up more and more possibly shortening the life of your Mac! Eventually your fan will stop completely and you could fry your chips! My fan stopped completely and my MBP was running very quietly, too quietly. Luckily I did not fry my chips because I was avoiding using high CPU apps because I knew something was wrong due to the massive slow down and wonkiness when I'd run them.
Side Note:I'm a bit concerned about all those Mac mini servers which may be using the same defective low quality fans which cannot be easily serviced by their owners as they are co-located in some server facility. One positive thing is those facilities are usually well airconditioned keeping temps low.
I suggest you do not run the Apple hardware test if you suspect your computer is overheating because the hardware test can seriously heat up your Mac! I tried running this test and my Mac got so hot I had to shut it down forcefully and I was concerned I damaged the chips. If you want to run the Apple hardware check make sure your CPU temperature is ok and that your fan works well before you run the test.
IF YOU DON'T FIX THIS PROBLEM YOU COULD FRY YOUR COMPUTER DUE TO HEAT DAMAGE!
DO NOT IGNORE THIS PROBLEM YOUR MACS LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT!
First you need to properly diagnose this problem and see if your CPU is getting to hot and you need to see if your fans are spinning at high rpms giving proper cooling, or if they are spinning at low rpms when running high intensive apps as your CPU temp increases.
TEST IF YOUR FAN(s) IS WORKING CORRECTLY :
Unfortunately Apple does not include CPU temperature reading software nor fan rpm speed software that I am aware of.
However, There are two free ways that I know of to check your CPU tempurature and your fan speed :
One app shows fan speed, and CPU heat, etc.
One app shows fan speed, CPU heat and allows you to adjust your fan speed settings.
One app is a dashboard widget, the other is a system preference.
I suggest you download both of these to check your computer statistics.
    http://www.eidac.de/?p=134
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
    http://fan-control.en.softonic.com/mac
I am not exactly sure what proper CPU temperatures are for the different Apple computers and this will change given different CPU loads.
My MBP doesn't seem to function properly with anything around 90 degrees or higher (celcius).
It seems when the fan is operating normally the CPU temp should not stay above 78 degrees even under heavy load, at least with the apps I'm running in the room temperature I'm in.
I can post back later with more specific temps under longer load, etc. but I wanted to get this post up for people to read as soon as possible so they don't fry their Macs.
If a bad fan is your problem :
THERE ARE ONLY TWO SOLUTIONS FOR THIS PROBLEM :
Fix or replace your fan so it cools the CPU and other chips properly.
I fixed my fan myself and I didn't need to buy a new one. Total cost was about $8.00 because I had to buy a #00 sized screwdriver and had it shipped to me. Price includes shipping.
On my mid 2009 model MacBook Pro fixing the fan was incredibly easy :
Before I started doing this I wasn't 100% this was the problem so I decided to try to fix my fan instead of ordering a new one and replacing it. As it turns out I didn't need a new fan, I only needed to clean the existing fan and relube it's axl so it could spin easier like when it was new.  It also didn't make sense to buy a brand new fan from an Apple authorized parts reseller selling me the same low quality fan for $49.00 which would probably fail in 2 years again. Prices for new comparable fans from different manufactures range from about $15.00 USD + shipping to around $49.00 USD + shipping depending on where you order them from and what brand you get.
How to fix / replace your internal fan on a mid 2009 MacBook Pro :
Please note : I am not a hardware technician, nor expert. If you decide to fix your Mac yourself you do so at your own risk through no fault of my own. Prior to opening up your Mac you should google around and learn how to do it correctly and safely so you won't damage your Mac. For example, it is possible for you to damage your Mac by static electricity from your body. To avoid this I believe proper procedure is that you wear a 'ground strap' (around your wrist) which  you clip to your Mac's metal body so your body will not excude a charge into your Mac. I believe the idea here is to keep your body's charge level and your Mac's similar. Since I do not have a ground strap and fixing/replacing the fan doesn't require touching any chips I did not wear a ground strap during my fan fix. What I did was periodically repeatedly touch the metal case of my MBP hoping that would be enough and it was. Avoid unecessary actions that can build up a static charge in you. Once I started the repair I did not walk around the room building up an electrical charge in my body. Walking on carpet can often build up a large charge in us so it is better to be avoided while working on your Mac. Certain clothing can build up static charges. Combing hair, etc. If you need to get up from your repair when you come back make sure you first touch the Mac's metal case and not anything inside.
Now that we're done with the scary paranoia, below you will find some instructions on how I fixed my MBP's internal fan
    Before you begin:
Check out someone's video (not mine) on how to remove / replace the fan (but not take it apart and repair it):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AghE9newvbs
Check out someone's web page (not mine) on how to replace the fan in a mid 2009 MacBook Pro:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-MacBook-Pro-13-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2009-Fan/ 1338/1
How to repair your mid 2009 MacBook Pro fan:
Make sure you are in a 'secure' environment. No pets, no kids running around, no drinks near the Mac, etc.
Make sure your computer is unplugged from it's power supply and turned off. NOT slept. Totally off / powered down.
    1. Get a size #00 phillips screwdriver (Hobby store, Radioshack, Amazon).
    2. Open up your MBP by unscrewing the bottom (yes flip it over so it's resting upsidedown). Note where each screw goes because some are different lengths. I placed each one around my MBP where they go, insuring I know their order (don't jumble them up). Note which direction your MBP is facing when it's upside down so if you spin it around while working on it you still know where the screws go.
2b. Some recommend removing the MBP's battery but I didn't do this step. You probably should, just to be safe. Follow the online instructions from the web page I listed about disconnecting the battery.
    3. Unscrew the fan's 3 holding screws.
    4. Unplug the fan's electrical connection (lift it straight up off the board). If you need to you can try to pry it up while you lift with a non metal/non electrical conductive object like a spudger if you have one or -perhaps a pen cap. Before you remove it, look closely at how it's attached so when you put it back on you won't wonder if you're doing it correctly. There's only one way it can go because it cannot fit 'the wrong way' but looking at it closely will make you feel more confident popping it back on when the time comes.
    5. Remove the fan - it easily lifts out.
    6. Take the fan apart by unscrewing it's one screw then unlatching the  plastic clips which hold it together.
    7. Seperate the fan blades from the housing. Lift the fan blades off of the fan housing by pulling it straight out away from the housing.
    8. Clean off the dust that's gathered. A can of compressed air helps here (I didn't have one). I used a little brush from my electric shaver kit which worked well. Once you've removed all the dust from the fan and surrounding areas proceed to the next step.
    9. Reapply new lubrication. You need less than 1 drop. Be sure it covers the entire fan blade axl as this is what needs to be well lubricated. Make sure there isn't excess oil that will fly around when the axl/fan spins at high rpms. I used the only oil I had which was olive oil (for cooking!) but I do not suggest this. At the time I was doing this I didn't know my fan was the problem so I wasn't even sure I was going to relube it. You should probably use something more appropriate perhaps like 3 in 1 oil. A good idea would be to call the manufatures of these little fans and ask them. Maybe a hobby store knows of good lubricants for these purposes?
DO NOT use things like WD 40 as it's not a long term lubricant or so I've read.
    10. Once your fan is now clean and oiled (make sure there isn't too much oil) reassmble the fan.
Push the fan blades/axl back into the housing shaft. Give it a few spins with your finger.
Screw together the fan housing then reclip the clips.
    11. Place the now reassembled fan back into your Mac and screw it in place (3 screws).
    12. Reattach the fan's electrical wiring by gently pushing it into place. Make sure you've got the right end facing down before you push it in place.
    13. Once your Mac's internals are clean and reassembled, place the rear cover back on your Mac and screw it in place.
    14. Double check you didn't forget anything like screws, tools, etc.
    15. Boot up your Mac and monitor the temperature and fan speed using those programs.
Compare the previous temps/fan speed to the current temp/fan speed.
Run a high CPU intensive app where your computer has been slowing down.
You should now have a happy Mac
If you have this problem and this solution fixed it for you please post in this thread letting me and everyone else know!
    Hope that helps.

Thanks for your lengthy reminder dude, I have a similar Mac with yours. I suspect its a software fault because it happens after I upgraded to Lion, 10.7.2.
