Unibody 17" supports 8GB RAM why not the 15" ?

Pardon my ignorance....but if the 15" can only support 4 GB of RAM and 6GB unofficially, I would of thought the 17" with the same components and OS would be the same?
It's as though Apple has purposely prevented the 15" from accessing more RAM in order to keep a gap between the 17" and 15" models beyond the screen size and a few minor differences.
Any thoughts?

The OS doesn't have anything to do with it. If the OS did, a Mac Pro would be limited to 4 gb RAM.
The hardware matters. That's why a Mac Pro supports a phenomenal amount of RAM. Nowhere has it been stated that the new 17" and the new 15" are the same internally, and I'd bet that they aren't.

  • The reason why ONLY the 17'' MBP and the 15'' 2.66 support 8GB RAM

Hi, I think I know why Apple is able to offer 8gb ram support on the revised 2.66 MBP and not on the 2.53 or 2.4 MBP.
    Take a look at this:
    15'' 2.4-2,53 NVDA Chipset
    http://s1.guide-images.ifixit.com/igi/oEmmaxSOKDDvZfZh.large
    17'' NVDA Chipset
    http://s1.guide-images.ifixit.com/igi/SSLSgODWYbiIuTLL.large
There are TWO different revisions. The first is B2 and the latter is B3.
I think that the former does not support 8GB of RAM and the latter does. That explains why the 17'' has support and now the NEWs 15'' also have, Apple gave the 15'' not only a speed bump but also the newer revision of the chipset!

It is no longer possible to navigate to the 8GB page, but the direct link is still working:
    http://store.apple.com/us/memorymodel/ME15_2_66MBP
I called the Apple Store (1-800...) and was told that the max is still 4GB. Then I read the direct URL out to the sales rep and he was surprised to see the page. He put me on hold and when he returned he said he'd spoken to a sales engineer who said that it was untested and unsupported, but that this did not mean it would not work.
I'm not actually interested in buying 8GB of RAM right now, but I would like to have some confidence that if I buy a MBP now, that I will be able to upgrade later when memory prices come down.
My guess is that Mac OS X 10.5.7 will be released soon and at that point the specs will be updated to max 8GB supported.
    Fingers crossed!

  • I had the smart print program from HP on my Mozilla home page, but you apparently no longer support this. Why not? I am very disappointed.

When I downloaded the latest version of firefox I was informed that the program is no longer supported and there is apparently no recourse. It has always been very helpful in printing web pages.

hello dskahler, you'll have to contact hp's site to see if there's an update available for this extension or else contact their support. since it's always the task of an extension's developer to keep it updated or make the necessary adjustment for it to work in new versions of the browser...

  • AT&T has great support for WP, why not VZW?

So first the Lumia 928 is released in only black and white, even though Nokia had made a cyan and red version. Why?
The Lumia Icon was ready from Microsoft/Nokia to be released in November 2013, but Verizon didn't release it until after the holiday season in February 2014 after poor marketing. Now after only 8 months, its being retired. Why?
The Lumia 930 is the equivalent of the Lumia Icon, except the 930 has been released overseas in multiple colors. Verizon only offered, again, black and white. Why?
Lumia Cyan. AT&T was able to test and release Lumia Cyan for the Lumia 1020 by August (2 months ago), for the Lumia 920 and 820 it was released early last month. No Windows Phone on Verizon has yet received this update (nor does Verizon care to enlighten us as to when we can expect it). Why?
Microsoft announced two new phones at the same time this year: The Lumia 735 and 830. It later came out that AT&T would get the 830 and Verizon would get the 735. AT&T will have the 830 hitting the shelves on Friday, November 7th. Verizon seems to have decided to postpone the release of the 735 until after the holiday season (much like the Icon). Oh and by the way, the Lumia 735 is already being released in other countries. Why not Verizon?
AT&T has not only released their latest windows phones (the Lumia 1020 and 1520) in multiple eye catching colors (just recently adding a pretty sweet green to the 1520 collection), but they update them much timelier then Verizon too.
I love the Windows Phone OS. If I have to choose between Verizon or Windows Phone, I'll end up choosing Windows Phone on a certain other carrier that actually values the OS that I prefer. I hope Verizon changes their stance before my contract ends this summer.

VZW has had a negative attitude against Microsoft devices for several years now.  It seems to go back to the Kin.

  • Why not the latest kernel

Can someone explain to me the rational behind which kernel makes it into the repo?
Just recently I believe there was an upgrade from 2.6.15-1 to 2.6.15-2. I cannot understand why not move direct to 2.6.16 rc3?
Surely in a testing branch of the kernel (or any other software product) the later versions should have less bugs, no? Of course there are exceptions to this, but surely as a general rule that is true. So why is the 2.6.16 rc3 not a more desireable transition than 2.6.15-2? It would surely be more stable, no?
    Thanks!

    no no no no!
the kernel is versioned as follows.
    a.b.x(.y)(-rcX)
    eg, 2.6.15.4, 2.6.16-rc2, 2.5.22
The kernel is considered very unstable when b is an odd number, thus, 2.3, 2.5.
The 2.6 kernel is not going to split to 2.7 in the near future, as it was done for  2.4 and 2.6. This is for the simple reason that there are no changes warranting a major overhaul, and the current system, with experimental things going into apkm's -mm patchset is working well.
Consider each x release to be stable, if it is not an rc, and the b is even.
After a b release, eg 2.6.15, there are y releases, and x plus 1-rc number (a.b.x+1-rcX). So currently, 2.6.16-rcX, 16 is one more than 15, swap X with the latest release candidate release number, releases, The idea is simply that it is a release candidate series, for 2.6.16. In the past, later release candidates have been re-released as the final version. For example, 2.6.15-rc7, was considered stable enough to be released as 2.6.15, and was released as such with only a small handful of changes.
Remember, rc and y releases are independent of each other and occur in parallel. One refines the current stable version, 2.6.15, and the other begins work on an unstable release candidate of the next version.
The 2.6.16-rc1 release, usually occurs 1-2 weeks after 2.6.15. In those two weeks, all major changes are to be made, thus allowing the rest of the rc's rc2 to whichever rc is needed, to be used for bug fixing. Few big patches are allowed in after those 1-2 weeks.
y patches, are to follow the following guidelines, quote kernel/Documentation/stable_kernel/rules
    - It must be obviously correct and tested.
    - It can not bigger than 100 lines, with context.
    - It must fix only one thing.
    - It must fix a real bug that bothers people (not a, "This could be a
       problem..." type thing.)
    - It must fix a problem that causes a build error (but not for things
marked CONFIG_BROKEN), an oops, a hang, data corruption, a real
security issue, or some "oh, that's not good" issue.  In short,
       something critical.
They are released after 2.6.15 as well, and were created so security and other important patches could be attained quicker, without people having to wait for the whole 2.6.16 release candidate series to complete.
.y generally contains fixes that slip through, critical security updates and other things that fit all the criterion in the file listed above.
arch's packages, are versioned, a.b.x-y, so 2.6.15.4, the latest .y, would be 2.6.15-4.
phew.. hope i didnt confuse you... and sorry for the mathematical approach, but thats how my brain works

  • HT204387 iPAD mini iOS 6.1 can pair keyboards, why not the Magic Mouse?

I need to access a site that requires click & drag with my iPad Mini. Has anyone figured out a work-around to get the MAGIC MOUSE to pair with the iPAD Mini? I am having trouble understanding why it won't pair.  Can Apple make an update to iOS 6.1 to include the MM?  It already can pair many other Bluetooth accessories, why not mice?

Thank you KPenguin. I understand now, though I still can't 'click & drag' items in Kano games.  The 2 second hold that works for rearranging app icons doesn't seem to work.  Guess I'll be returning my new MMouse, which is a shame. • Why would i get 'The Connection Is Untrusted' when i attempt to go to the Mozilla support page? Why not put something in the error log specifically for this?

Because i'm connecting to a Mozilla site with firefox 'Untrusted' seems unnecessary.
If i were a Mozilla browser i'd trust that site.
I reinstalled Mozilla and it fixed the problem.
    Seemed an odd error though.

This is this support article: [["This Connection is Untrusted" error message appears - What to do]]...
I am surprised that reinstalling Firefox fixed this. Perhaps a file got corrupted during the previous upgrade?
There are many reasons that an SSL certificate might not be considered trustworthy, but at this point, I don't think we'll be able to investigate the exact reason you had that problem since it won't be possible to re-create it.

  • Does 2009 Mac Pro quad core really only support 8GB ram?

    See:  https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4433#3
Does this mean that you cannot install more than 8GB of RAM?  Or does "maximum" mean that was the maximum you could order one with at the time?
If 8GB is the max, that's a pretty serious limitation, especially for a 3.5 year old machine.
Also, the amount of RAM it shipped with is 3GB.  Since there's no such thing as a 3GB or 1.5GB module that I can find, I guess I will need to replace the RAM that is there in its entirety.  I would very much like to install more than 8GB.  One of my applications specifies a minimum of 4GB.

Apple only recommends what they have tested themselves on currently-shipping machines.
Since they didn't SELL denser DIMMs, they did not bother to test them before that Mac was discontinued.
There are four slots, the last two of which are shared. You can install 8GB DIMMs (pairing is not necessary) for very reasonable amounts of money, often, but not always the old DIMMs can be retained if desired. You can also install 16GB DIMMs under certain restricted conditions if you do not mind the expense. This Mac-centric Vendor has done their homework on the issue:

  • Re: Qosmio G30-129 supports 8GB RAM?

    Hi,
    I have a Qosmio G30-219, will this support the 2 x 4 GB - SO DIMM 200-pin - DDR2 (667 MHz)?
The reason I ask is that the tech.spec. states max 4 Gig RAM and 533 MHz, I just wondered if it would work :-) (since the spec. probably was written long time before the 4GB RAM chips were available).

    Hi!
Two Memory modules can be installed to provide a maximum of 4GB.
So 8GB are not possible on this notebook.

  • ITunes got smarter about album art, why not the iPod Classic?

I'm a long time iTunes fan and noticed that iTunes USED to be "stupid" about album art where the user had to paste the art in multiple times (into every track) or it didn't display in cover flow properly.  And, once you did this, then a synched iPod would also display the correct album art on every track instead of SOME of the tracks, which I saw it do...
But the latest versions of iTunes have noticed got "smarter" and I have seen it now where you only need to paste in one image, and iTunes displays it as needed AUTOMATICALLY on all other tracks on the same album.
This is obviously a step forward, especially if you have 5,000 tracks on your iPod!!
I just got a new iPod Classic and I have concluded after a lot of technical research and experimentation that it is still "dumb", and seems to need the album art pasted into every track STILL.   It's annoying to me as a computer scientist that the same feature or benefit isn't there on both platforms.
I know this is a pretty advanced question compared to the normal iTunes user, but I was hoping that someone could point me to a better solution than having to paste up to 5,000 album arts into my iPod?
Thanks in advance for any help, I appreciate any comments.
    D.

As a computer scientist I love your handle!    Are you real?  <jk>
I go way way way back with iTunes, I was using it to rip CD's, and as my primary music player on my desktops and laptops beginning in the 90s when it was Mac-only!  Long before the iTunes Store even appeared, in fact.  I don't actually have even one purchased iTunes store track, just have 5,000 ripped files from my own purchases.  I also have edited the files I've imported, so my collection has only stuff I have pre-listened to and like personally, so I found Shuffle play to be a "100% win" and I use it exclusively on both my laptop and my iPod.  It's a "100% win" because I stack the deck, to use an american expression.
I had a large CD collection of 500+ CDs so you can see I am a major music enthusiast.  Unfortunately, I don't possess the CDs any more but I do have the electronic copies...
I loved how ITunes was time-optimized algorithmically to high efficiency in the ripping process (no doubt Steve Jobs guidance) and automatically looked up track names and artists on the Internet, and automatically managed the MP3s files too.  It's competition (Winamp and WMP) still required you to manually manage everything.  I also used the burn mp3 cd's function which made single-button burning of up to 12 hours of playlisted content a LOT.
So, that's why I do recall the early days when it was not as "smart" as it is now.
I visited your scripts page, a lot of very cool things there, but, if I understand correctly, Visual Basic doesn't work on OS X?  That ***** MICROSOFT.  Reminds me of when MS didn't support Apple clients on Exchange!
    Any further suggestions?
    D.

  • At 60 and totally confused w/version . Not  clue with how to use it and how to change it. My question - If a new version of i-tunes can be offered why not the older version as being a choice? Too simple or just impossible to do? I hate to drop i-tunes.

At 60 years of age and totally challenged by todays technology I find it impossible to understand i-tunes Version 11. Don' ask me to try to try go back to a earlier version ( as much as I would like to). I have read some of the advice given, as well as intended as it is, I don't understand the process. I don't want to drop i-tune but I will. I am sure my library is not as large as many others who use it but it is just as important to me. This really saddens me.
I do have two question if some one can help me. First, someone mentioned that if I go to previous restore point this might correct it. Yes or no? Secondly, if Apple can offer us a new version to download why can't they offer an older version to download. Too simple or impossible to do.

You can still drag and drop a song into a Playlist, in the same manner as before. Simply use the left-click of your mouse to select-and-hold the song (left-click-and-hold, don't release the click) and drag it to and then drop it (release the click) into the Playlist you want. (You cannot drop it into a Smart Playlist, you can only drop it into a Regular Playlist.)
... and here's a screenshot dragging the song "Lazy Orbit" into the Regular Playlist "Sat 4th June 2011". A small + symbol also appears in the drag, but it doesn't show up on screenshots. If the move is forbidden, a red slash through a red circle appears instead of the + symbol.
As for the Albums thing; in the Column Browser, right-click anywhere in the Column Browser header (see my screenshots in my previous post) and a menu appears. Deselect Albums on that menu to remove Albums from the upper Columns:
... and for the columns underneath (with the songs list etc.), right-click on that header bar and once again, deselect Albums from the menu that appears. The Albums column will then be removed from the lower columns list.

You would think with all the complaints they are getting they would want us, the buyers, to be satisfied with there product.
Well, my advice to you is: do not think about what you think iTunes cannot do, instead, think about what you want to achieve - and then work out how to achieve it.
