Universal Windows 8.1 & Phone App accessing on-premise SQL Server DB and offline SQLite DB

I am new to Windows Mobile App development. I am creating a mobile app that I want to connect and get data/authentication from on-premise SQL Server database.  I then would like to have a local (on device) SQLite DB to hand offline situations.
I am aware that Azure Mobile Services can work with on-premise, azure based and SQLite databases, but I am confused about the whole structure.  Do I need to host anything in Azure if I have an app on the device and the database is on-premise.
The samples for Hybrid connections (BizTalk) connects a Azure website to on-premise database, and there are plenty of samples for devices apps connecting to Azure databases, with the MobileService being hosted in Azure.  Am I able to create and host a
mobile service on our on-premise server?  Should I ignore Azure altogether?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Is it possible to access to a SQL Server in the LAN?

I would like to know if it's possible to access to a SQL Server that is in my LAN from Windows Phone 8.1.
    Thank you so much.

    Hello,
in principle, it's the question whether to implement a thin or a thick client and whether to design a two-tier or a multi-tier application.
A thick client is almost standalone - the business logic is implemented and performed by the client, whereas the thin client in principle does only provide an UI to access the services that the server provides.
Thus, thick clients have more workload than thin clients and thick clients must guarantee that the data stays consistent. Besides, if you have multiple thick clients for multiple platforms (which is often soon the case after you have at least one mobile
client) you have to port the whole business logic. This implies that you must fix each bug which is not in the presentation layer for each platform you support - and that you must propagate those bugfixes to all stores you support. Even if your clients are
trusted - a bug in the iPhone app could make the windows phone or the desktop app useless by accidentally breaking some data invariants. But to keep those database invariants intact, you must wrap all your operations into atomic transactions which will increase
the complexity of the business logic.
If you have a thin client and a logic tier between the presentation and data tier, you have a single point where you can ensure all data invariants and that you can easily debug and deploy since there is only one instance.

  • Windows 7 64-bit Pro not connecting to SQL Server on domain Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

I am upgrading computers from Windows XP Professional to Windows 7 Professional but I have a problem getting one of the stock control software programs we use to connect to our SQL Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard from the new Windows 7 computers.
Our computers are connected to a domain and so is the SQL Server. The Windows XP computers allows each standard domain user to log on and connect to the SQL Server via the stock control software program.
But on the Windows 7 Pro computers standard domain users can't connect to the SQL Server but the domain administrator accounts on the same Windows 7 Pro computers can connect to the SQL Server via the stock control program.
I have setup the server alias, server name and port number via the SQL Server Client Network Utility (cliconfg.exe) so I know this isn't the problem as it works when I am logged on as domain administrator.
It seems to be something to do with domain user permissions and Windows 7 Pro. There seems to be a change from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro that doesn't allow standard domain users to connect to an SQL Server. But I can't find anything about this and
can't workout how to fix it except to make all the users domain administrators which is obviously not a good thing to do. So basically I I think I need to create a group policy that allows the users to connect to the SQL Server but I have no experience doing
this and don't know where to begin.
Thanks for all you guys help and I hope someone can provide me with the solution to this problem.

    Hi,
    Was there any message?
Please run the stock control software as Administrator to check if it was caused by UAC.
If it could run as administrator, please add the standard domain user to local administrator.

  • Access Tables in SQL Server

I was told that SAP on SQL Server maintains a very unique security where someone can not just directly access tables in SQL Server. I was told you need the SAP client in order to access the data stored within the DB. With other systems, normally users such as a DBA  or privileged users would be able to directly log into the database and possibly alter data, whereas this is not the case for SAP on SQL. Can someone help confirm if this is true or not and explain to me how this works.

    Hi Julia:
You can access data stored in SQL tables using Enterprise Manager or SQL Query Analyzer and you can do in every other database system such as DB2, Informix or Oracle; there are some well-known Cluster tables that information can only be read from inside SAP.

  • Sql server 2008 and Windows 8

    Hi
I published my WPF application using VS 2010 Express edition and trying to install it on Windows 8.  The application runs but when it comes to searching the database that was included in the installation package it gives the error
"This program has compatibility issues Microsoft SQL Server(2008 and 2008 R2)"
The installer when setup was run did download SQL Server so I am not sure why I am getting this error.  Any advice?

    Hello,
Service Pack 3 for SQL Server 2008 is required to make it compatible for Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. For more information,
please read the following Support article:
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681562?wa=wsignin1.0
You can download SP3 from the following URL:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=27594
If you are installing SQL Server 2008, continue setup despite of the warning and apply SP3 after installing SQL Server 2008.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need help understanding MS SQL Server 2008R2 and Report Builder 3.0 and user access / priviledges.

Having Problems with connections and access.  I have spent the last 2 days reading various threads regarding SQL Reporting Services pertaining to access and connections.
First, let me explain what I have done to date.
    1)  I am using Windows 7 - Home Premium.
    2)  I downloaded and installed MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.  This was successful.
    3)  I downloaded Report Server 3.0 - This was successful.
    4)  In IE, I tried logging onto http://servername/reports, but this failed.  After logging into IE
via ' Run Administrator', I was able to access URL.
Next, I updated the security / trust sites as explained in the
    threads
Next, I went to Folder Setting and added my user name and granted all roles (Browser,
    Content Manager, My
    Reports, Publisher and Report Builder).
    5)  Now, I can log into Http://servername/reports using my normal windows 7 user account.
    6)  Next, I opened Report Builder 3.0.  However, I am having trouble connecting to report
    server.  I tried connecting with
    http://servername/reports, but this failed.
However, If I change URL to http://servername/reportserver, it works.  BUT NOW, I have
    another problem.  When I
execute the RUN button to create report, I get a  permission
error.  "PERMISSION GRANTED TO USER ARE
    INSUFFICIENT FOR  PERFORMING THIS OPERATION".
    7)  Finally, I can not save reports to http://servername/reportserver when I select "Recent
    Site and Servers".  ERROR
MESSAGE:  UNABLE TO OPEN OR SAVE REPORT
    8)  In my Reporting Services Configuration Manager:
    Web URL = http://servername:80/ReportServer
    Report Manager URL = http://servername:80/reports.
What is strange, the Report Manager URL works for IE URL and WEB URL works for
Report Builder connect (Even though it really does not work).
    THREE QUESTIONS:
    1)  What URL should I use to connect in Report Builder.
    2)  How do I update my normal Windows 7 user so I can run reports when I connect to report
    builder.
    3)  How can I save my reports so they are displayed in IE Reporting services.  Note:  I was
    able to save report to
documents folder and import into IE Reporting Services.
    4)  And finally, is it possible to add report builder 3.0 as a tab in my IE Reporting Services.  I
save seen samples of Reporting Services screens where the instructor has Report Builder
    tab.
    Thanks
    Dan

To answer question 1... it should connect through /ReportServer
    http://bretstateham.com/reporting-services-architecture-diagram%E2%80%A6/
Report Builder 3.0 is not a web application, it is a client side application can be used using the click-once or downloaded from Microsoft's website.  If you are having issues, you might download and install it and try running it as an administrator.

  • Can't access cluster via SQL Server Mng Studio unless node has ownership

    Hi:
We have Windows and SQL 2008 R2 in a 2 node cluster. Failover and failback work like a dream. All the 'lights' are green. But we can only access the cluster when we're on the node that has ownership. I've deleted all DNS entries and successfully recreated
them via ipconfig /registerDns from each node, shutting down, restarting the actual cluster and taking the application and service offline then back on line. All DNS records got recreated perfectly. Cluster error log doesn't show anything when we
can't connect either. We can also ping all IPs, Hostnames and Clustername.

    Hi g_machuca,
According to your description, you want to implement failover and failback in SQL Server cluster environment. We need to verify if The cluster group containing SQL Server can be configured for automatic failback to the primary node when it becomes available
again. By default, this is set to off. First you set a preferred owner for the SQL Server service in a clustered environment; To ensure the service or application automatically moves to the correct node, select “Allow Failback” under the Failover tab. .
Auto failback saves you from having to make this change manually; however it will restart the SQL Services when it automatically fails back. Or if you don’t want to configure auto failback you’ll want to make sure that you manually fail the services
back to the more powerful node after the system has come back online.
There are details about failover cluster allows automatic failback, you can review the following articles.

  • Perform Forced Manual Failover of Availability Group (SQL Server 2012) and WSFC (Windows Server Failover Cluster)

I have a scenario with the three nodes with server 2012 standard, each running an instance of SQL Server 2012 enterprise, participate in a
single Windows Server Fail-over Cluster (WSFC) that spans two data centers.
If the nodes in the primary data center are unavailable due to data center outage. Then how I can able to access node in the WSFC (Windows Server Fail-over Cluster) in the secondary disaster recovery data center automatically with some script.
I want to write script that can be able to check primary data center by pinging some IP after every 5 or 10 minutes.
If that IP is unable to respond then script can be able to Perform Forced Manual Fail-over of Availability Group (SQL Server) and WSFC (Windows Server Fail-over Cluster)
Can you please guide me for script writing for automatic fail-over in case of primary data-center outage?

+1 to David's comment. I would not suggest to run a script automatically. During such failover you might have data loss and decision has to be made with business owners during disaster.
During such situation, you need to start cluster service in force quorum mode (/fq switch) and then perform manual failover of AG to DR site.

  • Routing and remote access logging to SQL server

    Hi!
I am in the process of trying to set up SQL logging from routing and remote access on a windows server 2003 to another windows server 2003 which is running microsoft SQL server 2005.
What i did was i created a database named RRAS in the sql server and in routing and remote access i went under remote access logging and configured it, when i press "test connection" it says its successful. and when i check the local logfile i successfully
configured i can see my connection attempts towards the RRAS. but in the sql database there's nothing, no tables or anything.
I am sure i have the right permissions going on since i have only been using one account for everything so far(created the rras and the sql database), the SQL server is operational(it has a myriad of other databases that are used on a dailybasis).
So i am wondering what component is missing? do i need to create the tables manually, is there a guide that tells me how to do that?

  • Messages App on Macbook Pro suddenly no contacts and offline

When using my messages app (7.0.1) my sent messages started appearing on friends phone as being sent from my.me account instead of my phone number. I tried to log in and out of the cloud, and now the message app says all messages are off line and no longer lists the names of my contacts.  Only the phone numbers appear.  How do i get it to show the contacts and messages and also have it set so people recieve my texts from my phone number and not from my .me account?  Thanks

    Hi,
I would check that the Mac Version and the  iPhone version are both listing the Apple ID and iPhone Number as active alternatives to Receive Messages.
I once had a similar issue whereby the iPhone number on the iPhone was Unticked.
(I am not sure how as it is not something you can manually do)
This caused the iPhone to only get iMessages sent to the Apple ID
I had to remove the Apple ID
Place the iPhone in Airplane mode for a few minutes to Break with the servers
On taking the iPhone out of Airplane mode I made sure the iPhone number was active again.
Then I added the Apple ID  back.
