Unix command in ARD to remove DNS Servers from Network prefs?

I need to know how to send a unix command to remove DNS Servers in Network preferences. I need the DNS Servers field to be blank. Can this be done?

Our network administrator is getting ready to change the IP address of our DNS server. This means I have over 30 Macs that will be needing changes to their DNS settings. Since each machine is setup with limited access to the system prefs, that means I have to go to each machine and log in as the admin user to make this change. In the interest of saving time, is this something I can do with Remote Desktop and how? Would I use the same commands in this post and replace dns1 with our DNS' new IP address? Will this distrupt the users access to the network when I do so?
Thanks for any help.

  • Send a Unix command through ARD that will change a OS X admin user to a standard user.

I would love to send a Unix command through ARD that will change a OS X admin user to a standard user. The only thing I found close is
sudo dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership USERNAME
which does remove the user from the list of admins, but they are still listed as an admin in the user preference panel, and can still use their account to authenticate for admin privileges.

I'm not having any problems adding or removing users from the 'admin' group by using the syntax's
dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
    or
dscl . -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
What I'm saying is if a user is ticked as an Adminstrator in System Preferences and I run the
dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername syntax and remove them from the 'admin' GroupMembership they still have the Administrator box ticked in System Prefs and can administer the machine.
By the way the '/' doesn't work in the syntax in ARD.
    Thanks

  • Airport not distributing DNS servers over network

    Hi everyone,
I connect to the Internet over ADSL (ISP: Arnet Highway, Buenos Aires, Argentina) using PPPoE from my MacBook Pro.
I have my ADSL modem connected to the Airport Extreme (802.11n) and distributing IP over DHCP just fine. Every device that joins the network obtains a valid IP.
However, DNS servers aren't distributed by the router over the network. Every connected device has to be manually configured to set the DNS servers of my ISP to be able to resolve hosts, instead of 'asking' these addresses to the router, as it should be.
Initially I thought there might be a problem obtainig the DNS servers from the ISP. So in the Airport Utility, in Internet / PPPoE settings, I've manually set my ISP's DNS servers, which should be distributed over the network to all connected devices.
This doesn't happen, and every somebody new joins my wireless network I have to manually change the DNS servers for that connection which, as I'm sure you'll agree with me, can be quite annoying. Not to mention what would happen if my ISP decides to use dynamic DNS addresses.
Thanks for any help you might provide.
    Cheers.

    Hello belbo,
I connect to the Internet over ADSL using PPPoE from my MacBook Pro.
Is your Macbook Pro Network configured to use PPPoE or DHCP?
I have my ADSL modem connected to the Airport Extreme (802.11n) and distributing IP over DHCP just fine. Every device that joins the network obtains a valid IP.
Is NAT enabled on the AE? Are the valid IP Address obtained from your ISP or from the AE?
However, DNS servers aren't distributed by the router over the network. Every connected device has to be manually configured to set the DNS servers of my ISP to be able to resolve hosts, instead of 'asking' these addresses to the router, as it should be.
When you setup the AE to use PPPoE did you enter a Domain Name or a DHCP Client ID?
Initially I thought there might be a problem obtainig the DNS servers from the ISP. So in the Airport Utility, in Internet / PPPoE settings, I've manually set my ISP's DNS servers, which should be distributed over the network to all connected devices.
The DNS servers listed in the AE aren't distributed to each Network Device but are only used to translate names into IP addresses when need by a Network Device.
This doesn't happen, and every somebody new joins my wireless network I have to manually change the DNS servers for that connection which, as I'm sure you'll agree with me, can be quite annoying. Not to mention what would happen if my ISP decides to use dynamic DNS addresses.
If your AE is distributing IP Address using DHCP and NAT then this should not be a problem but I'm not sure without more information about the questions I asked.
    Later.

  • Using Sent Unix Command in ARD 3 with proxy authentication

I'd like to use Unix commands to update Apple software through ARD thus allowing me to lock the computer screen before the process using the ARD command to do so, thus keeping the users from interfering with the process .
Our network utilizes password protected firewall proxy that hangs ARD when using the softwareupdate command through ARD's "Send Unix Command..." at the point in which it would ask for authentication if using the same command in the terminal.
Is there a Unix/terminal script or a series of script commands that could be modified to wait and enter the appropriate authentication at the previous mentioned prompt?
I've researched this topic on this forum and discover a few post that states it is not possible but they are fairly old posts so I am hoping ARD 3 has some scripts or commands that can pass thru a username and password

    Welcome,
I use the "System Events" handler, e.g.:
tell application "System Events" to delay 5.5
tell application "System Events" to keystroke "K"
tell application "System Events" to delay 0.5
tell application "System Events" to keystroke return

  • Does anyone know the apple script or unix command in ARD that allows me to send keystroke commands to computers on my ARD network ? thanks !

I am trying to cue computers through keystroke commands using ARD
I want to know a unix shell or script command to hit keystrokes on my ARD machines.
EXAMPLE... I want machine X  to press the letter K.
I am also wondering if you can send multiple commands doing this , multiple keystrokes with built in delays
    Thank you

    Welcome,

  • Can this script be converted to a UNIX command for ARD?

First I'd like to thank "Neil" again for providing the script below:
set the_versions to (do shell script "mdls -name kMDItemVersion /Applications/Microsoft\\ Office\\ 2011/Microsoft\\ Excel.app")
set the_versions to the_versions & return & (do shell script "mdls -name kMDItemVersion /Applications/Adobe\\ Reader.app")
set the_versions to the_versions & return & (do shell script "mdls -name kMDItemVersion /Applications/Safari.app")
set the_versions to the_versions & return & (do shell script "mdls -name kMDItemVersion /Applications/Google\\ Chrome.app")
    set the_versions to the_versions & return & (do shell script "mdls -name kMDItemVersion /Applications/Adobe\\ Acrobat\\ X\\ Pro/Adobe\\ Acrobat\\ Pro.app")
    set the_versions to the_versions & return & (do shell script "SW_vers")
Output for this script yields exactly what I requested in the thread.  Ex:
    "kMDItemVersion = \"14.4.1\"
    kMDItemVersion = \"11.0.07\"
    kMDItemVersion = \"7.0.4\"
    kMDItemVersion = \"35.0.1916.114\"
    kMDItemVersion = \"10.1.10\"
    ProductName:          Mac OS X
    ProductVersion:          10.9.3
    BuildVersion:          13D65"
I'd like to be able to run this command (or a variation) in Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) remotely, and as a UNIX command in order to generate a similar ARD report if possible.  Even better, I'd like the report to include the Application name and I'd like it to not to halt if an Application isn't present. My guess is that functionality like this for ARD would help a LOT of ARD Administrators because it would seem that the only way to do anything similar is to derive the metadata piecemeal (machine by machine) or end up having to wade through a ton of unwanted content using a full System Report...  Thanks.

Forum software NOW prevents posting complete shell scripts. You'll have to piece together the code.
First build an array of the applications that you are looking for in this form. Note; I truncated the applications.
    apps=( "/Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Microsoft Excel.app" "/Applications/Adobe Reader.app" "/Applications/Safari.app" )
    Next loop thru the array
    for i in "${apps[@]}"; do
         printf "%s: %s\n" "$i" "$(mdls -name kMDItemVersion "$i")"
    done
If you want to create a report then change the above loop to the following
    for i in "${apps[@]}"; do
         printf "%s: %s\n" "$i" "$(mdls -name kMDItemVersion "$i")"
    done > app_report.txt
    sw_vers >> app_report.txt

  • Cant send UNIX commands via ARD

I have ARD, and the option to send UNIX commands is greyed out. Help?

On the client, apple menu, system preferences, sharing, Remote Management.
If allow access is set to all users, then click the options button.
else, select the user your using to connect to the client, and then click the option button.
Make sure every thing is checked.
    click ok
    try again on ARD.
    Other things to try:
    quit and re-open ARD.
delete, then  and re-add the client computer from ARD.
unchecking, and then re- checking remote management on the client. (to force the service to restart)

  • Help with 2 UNIX Commands using ARD

    Hello All,
Can someone help me with 2 UNIX commands I would like to set up? The first one... how to delete a range of users within /Users by date (i.e. the oldest user who last logged in "Mar 22 09:40 00796216" to "Mar 25 17:01 01036773"). Currently, I'm using "sudo rm -r " followed by each home directory name separated by a space. It works but to save time, it would be nice to do this all within 1 UNIX command.
Second, is there a UNIX command where I can delete a range of users by ID numbers? (We have users assigned with an 8 digit ID number. Is there a UNIX command where I can delete users from 12345678 to 23456781?) Again, I'm using "sudo rm -r " followed by each home directory name separated by a space.
    Thank you in advance!
    Mike

This happens with or without SIM card, with and without wifi... with and without SD card as well-- even bought a new 32GB class 10 SanDisk-- but it still crashed.
Just an update: Went to the Nokia Care Center yesterday, they reflashed the firmware and I got back the phone within the day... when I went back home to try the phone again... again it kept hanging... in a period of 5 minutes, I had 5 hangs... right from startup, went straight to the cam, took some pics then pinched zoom... and phone simply crashed-- had no SD car, no sim card then.
So today I went back to Nokia Care Center... they said they will do some more tests and see... but they insist its a software problem, we'll see in a day or 2.

  • How to remove a DNS entry from Network Preferences

When I checked Network Preferences today, I discovered 2 DNS servers listed in +System Preferences > Network > Ethernet > Advanced > DNS.+ There have never been any DNS servers listed there before.
One of them is my home router; the other is a server that to my knowledge I have never accessed. I did not add these servers to my system and have no idea how they got into my Network Preferences.
I would like to remove them but cannot find any way to do it. The addresses are greyed out and cannot be selected to be removed.
Yes, I unlocked the preference pane.
No, there are no DNS servers listed in my Airport configuration.
    Both connections work fine.
I just want to remove the DNS server addresses.

I think I found the answer.
The grey DNS server entries are coming from my router. I can see them appear in the DNS pane when I connect the ethernet cable. Also checked my router and that's the DNS address specified in the router setup (Actiontec MI424WR). There is also no evidence of a potential DNSchanger/RSPlug/Jahlav trojan.
Based on info I found in the Verizon FIOS forums & DSLreports, the 71.242.0.12 address appears to be Verizon DNS server nsphil01.verizon.net, which would make sense as I have FIOS internet. But I don't quite understand why a WHOIS request on the address returns these server names: NS1.THOMASLORD.NET and NS1.ACCESSMYEMR.COM

  • Unix command to require password to wake computer from sleep or screensaver

    Yo folks,
Just as the subject says, is there a Unix command we can send that turns on the option to require password when the computer wakes from sleep or screensaver...which is the first option in System Preferences --> Security?
I looked through the systemsetup commands and didn't find anything.
    Thanks!

    Run the following AppleScript:
set items_1 to items -18 thru -2 of (do shell script "ifconfig en0 ether")
    set items_2 to ""
    repeat with this_item in items_1
if this_item is greater than ":" then
    set items_2 to items_2 & this_item
    end if
    end repeat
    set the_path to "defaults read ByHost/com.apple.screensaver." & items_2
set old_string to do shell script the_path
    set new_string to (items 1 thru 6 of old_string) & "askForPassword = 1;" & (items 27 thru -1 of old_string) as string
    do shell script "defaults write ByHost/com.apple.screensaver." & items_2 & " '" & new_string & "'"
The necessary plist key is part of an array, and is in a file which has the computer's Ethernet address in its file name, so the script needs to handle both tasks. This change will not show up in the GUI until the account logs out and back in.

  • How do i get a list of SQL Servers from network?

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to get a list of SQL Servers from the network and put them into a drop-down combo box. I try to search on Google and i can only find some C# source codes which doesn't help me at all. I'm wondering if JAVA has the similar method to do so.
btw, I'm using MSSQL Server 2005, JDBC 1.2, JDK 1.6.0_24
    thanks

true, but you know as well as I do that requirements documents are usually not written by people with the least understanding on those complexities...
And if a company assigns such a project to someone like OP who clearly doesn't know how to deal with such requirements documents, that only shows their morosity all the more clearly :)
Assuming that I'm able to find a list of TCP connections on network, how do I know which of them are sqlserver? That isn't what I said. A "protocol" is a description of a methodology involving functionality and communication which solves a particular problem.
There is a "protocol" which describes how to find MS SQL Servers. You don't make it up yourself. You find the description, read what it says and implement it.Or more likely (like Oracle) there's no such security problem in MS SQL Server and instead it relies on the client knowing the connection details or it'll never find them.

  • Inconsistent results from hostname Unix command via ARD

I sometimes get the DNS name and sometimes get the local sharing name.
Some one pointed out to me
    % scutil --set HostName DNS-name
as root will do the job.
So the next question is can one get the Mac to cough up its DNS name or
    IP address without major acrobatics.
    For example
    % ifconfig en0 inet
gives the IP address but you have to parse it out and
    % host IP-address
will give the DNS name but again you have to parse it out.

We have a bunch of machines that are all named via the Sharing panel in System Preferences. Our network is giving them a different DNS name. We'd like to be able to access the Sharing name via the command-line (hostname gives DNS name). I assume this is possible because Remote Desktop seems to get it somehow.

  • Where does ARD get its "DNS Names" from?

I've been plagued with this for months now: Many of my ARD clients have bogus entries in the "DNS Name" column. Some of them are just previously used names (showing as "MacLab-02.local" when the computer is now named "MacLab-15", for example). And some of them are names that I have never actually assigned (showing as "maclab-124.local", when I've never used lower case or numbers that high).
No matter what I do, I can't seem to fix these. In the clients' Sharing prefpane, the correct .local name is showing. When I type "hostname" at the command line, the correct name shows. Using every method I've ever known to check the names, in fact, they'll show the right ones. Except in ARD.
So... where on earth is it picking up these names? How do I clear or fix that list?
    Thanks!
    john

That was never my intention (do some windows platform dependend registry stuff)
However i had a broken network entry in that specific part of the registry which chrashed my application. Now i can just delete it and my problem is gone :-)
Probably some uninstaller missed something or only partly removed it, or the entry was from some failed installation procedure - how knows?
    Now it is working,
    ToM
PS: Yeah some may point out (which is right) to do some good error checking/exception handling however since the app is already rolled out a proper bugfix needs time and this solution provides a quickfix to make it work instantly...

  • Removed a connection from network map, can not find again

I removed a home computer from the network map, intending to block access. While I did achieve that, I am now trying to remove the block and allow the computer to reconnect. There seems to be no way possible to do this. Everywhere I search has told me to simply remove the intruder status from the network map, but the computer I'm trying to unblock does not show up on the map whatsoever. I've reinstalled my router, and that affected nothing. Is there another way to completely revert the router to factory default? Or is there some piece in the software that could fix this that I am not seeing? The computer's OS is Vista-32bit (that can not connect).
    Thanks for your help,
    Steve.
