Unix command problem

Sometimes I'll use the 'bg' command to run a process in the background so I can do other tasks in the same terminal window.
For some reason, I still get the output of the process even though I said BG, not FG (foreground, of course).
My roomate runs Linux and he doesn't have this problem, does this make sense to anyone?

Let me make sure that I understand correctly. I assume that you start a job, then type ctrl-z to suspend it and then type bg to put it into the background.
If so, and if you are getting output to the screen, then I would conclude that the screen is still the standard output device. What I would do is redirect the output to a file. In fact, you can start the job in background mode. If your process is myjob, then this command
myjob > outfile &
will send the output from myjob to the file outfile and the "&" puts the job into the background.
I hope this helps.

  • ODI file append with unix command problem

    Hi everyone,
    I will apennd multiple files to a main file in a directory.I wrote jython code like this:
    import os
    sourceDirectory = "/home/oracle1/Desktop/test"
    inFileNames = "#FILE_NAMES"
    inFileNamesList = inFileNames.split(" ")
    inFileIDS = *"'a','1','2','3'"*
    inFileIDSList = inFileIDS.split(",")
    i = 0
    for item in inFileNamesList:
         command ="awk 'BEGIN {OFS=\"" + "#FILE_DELIMITER\"" + "} {print $0,\"[|]\"" + *inFileIDSList* + ",\"[|]\"NR}' " + sourceDirectory + os.sep + item + " >> " + sourceDirectory + os.sep + "#SESS_CURR_TS"
         os.system(command)
         i = i + 1
    Now my problem is here :
    Yu can seee my inFileIDS values.Ana I have splitted comma and then first I will write file then *inFileIDSList[i]* and at the and NR
    But character a is not written.Number values is appended but character values is not appended.
    Why it can be so ?
    someone has an idea about this problem
    Coluld anyone help me to solve this problem?
    Regards

    import os
    sourceDirectory = "#SOURCE_DIRECTORY"
    inFileNames = "#FILE_NAMES"
    inFileNamesList = inFileNames.split(" ")
    inFileIDS = "#FILE_IDS"
    inFileIDSList = inFileIDS.split(",")
    i = 0
    for item in inFileNamesList:
         command ="awk 'BEGIN {OFS=\"" + "#FILE_DELIMITER\"" + "} {print $0,\"\"*FILENAME*}' " + sourceDirectory + os.sep + item + " >> " + sourceDirectory + os.sep + "#SESS_CURR_TS"
         os.system(command)
         i = i + 1
    My original code is above.Now I am printing file datas and I want to print file name that are being ready.
    First print$0(all line) and field_delimiter(;) and then I will print filename which file is processed.My output file will be like this:
    all line;FILENAME
    But I write FILENAME into awk command it returns with path .So for example likie this:/d102/odi/uca/arrival/data/T02344903302310.txt .But I want to print only file name without paths.
    I want to print T02344903302310.txt so my output file will be like this:
    all_line;T02344903302310.txt and there are many files like this.
    Could anyone has an idea?

  • URGENT!! problems with Unix command, please help

    I am trying to use the following Unix command and I keep getting error messaages from stdError. However if I run the same command from the command line it works perfectly. For some reason when I run the command from inside the program it thinks the append symbol ">>" is another file.
    String command = " cat /users/02/wjoc1/Test/list.mod >> /users/02/wjoc1/Test/Blacklist ";
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command);
    The error get is :
    /bin/cat: >>: No such file or directory
    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    The better solution for this problem is write a shell script for the action you wnat to perform and execute it using the runtime.exec().In your case just cut and paste cat /users/02/wjoc1/Test/list.mod >> /users/02/wjoc1/Test/Blacklist in to a file and save it. use that file as a argument for the exec method it will work.
    cheers

  • Problem with Updating clients with UNIX command

    Hi.
    Until this day, I used to update all our 50 client macs by manually logging in as administrator via ARD and choosing Software Update from the apple menu, this works always and I use our own servers SUS so the downloading is really fast. Still, this clearly is time consuming and annoying when you have this many clients. I have now done some search and I know I could do this by sending unix command to clients using ARD. First I had problems with running the command, then I noticed I need to run this as root. Then it "works".
    Works, not quite. It starts to run, and I can see all the output. I have tried this with few clients and the results are confusing. The following is an output from one client I send the command "softwareupdate -i -r"

    Optimizing system for installed software…

    Registering updated components…
    And thats it, it stops there. Few clients completed the task, but the output says that they skipped the installation of all updates. In the case above, there is some skipping too, and I don't know what it means. Yesterday I left one client to this part where its Registering updated components.... , and today when I came in, it's still there, and the task is still running. When I update the clients with the Software Update from apple menu, it takes usually 10 minutes max to complete the whole process, download and install. After I restarted the same client and ran the manual Software Update from apple menu, it shows the same updates, it didn't do anything???
    Am I doing something wrong with the command?

    I am having the same issue. I send the unix command to some test clients to install all updates. The process never finishes and stays at "Registering updated companents....". (See screen shot)
    I have manually restarted some of the clients after waiting a very long time. All updates seem to have been installed. I am wondering why the task hangs at this point. I want to be able to ran ASU with this Unix method on the 450+ macs that I manage at work, but it scares me that the task never seems to finish.

    IF NOT Form_Success THEN
         Message('Error -- Message not sent.');
    ELSE
         Message('Message Sent.');
    END IF;
    I always get back 'Error...'
    The directories have permission open to everyone. Therefore I would of expected no problems with doing a touch to create a file.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks Ino. That was it, the full path for the unix command itself was missing. I knew it was something simple. =)

  • Problems with ARD and SwUpd Unix Command

    Hi everybody
    I have a problem sending UNIX commands to my clients, I work in a school with 500 macs, with 10.4 and 10.5 systems and all the computers download the updates from my Software Update Server, but when I try to send the command from ARD (sudo softwareupdate -i -a) the clients attemp to connect to Apple's servers instead my own SUS. It seems when I try to install with sudo command, overrides the address of my server.
    I show you the output:

    I have the exact same problem with two PowerMac G5's. I need to have full resolution on the remote G5 which has no monitor connected, but only get to choose between PAL and NTSC TV resolution. This is really annoying, and in my opinion a major bug in ARD 3.1 and below. Why is the user forced to see such a small remote window if the remote computer is capable of much more?

  • Problem With UNIX command in ODI Environment.

    A procedure is used in our package which involves moving a file from a folder to another in a UNIX server.
    The procedure uses an OS command - 'os.system' to execute unix command.
    The unix command is a grep command which seems to work fine when executed alone.
    But when this procedure is executed ,it fails.
    The following code raises an error and the procedure fails.:
    if os.system(cmd) <> 0:
    raise "command fails","see agent output for details";
    Whenever we are trying to reverse,we get "file not Found " error.
    We tried to execute the jython code by placing the files in local directories. The same error appears both when the file is in local and when it is in a remote directory.
    This is the error we get:

    Hi,
    The unix command is a grep command which seems to work fine when executed alone. :-
    I guess you executed this from your Unix server , so it work fines.
    And when you are trying to execute outside from this (using ODI) , its failing , right ?
    Can you please check the permission settings for that script file (sh).
    Please try by giveing the full permission (specifically execution permission) for all users connecting from other machines.
    This can be one of the reason for the failure .
    please let me know if this is not working

    Rathish

  • Problem while executing unix command having \&\& symbol

    Hi All,
    Please check the below program while is not executing, when the unix command's having \&\& is used.
    The following command copies the src folder to dest folder with out data loss ...
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class Sample
      public static void main(String[] args)
         try {
              String ExCmd     =     "ssh [email protected] cd /u01/11510/devdb/9.2.0/slax \\&\\& /bin/tar cf - . | ssh [email protected] cd /d01/AppsTest/testappl2 \\&\\& /bin/tar -xf - > test.log";
              System.out.println("Command to execute : "+ExCmd);
              Process SshProc = (Runtime.getRuntime()).exec(ExCmd);
            // any error message?
              StreamReader errorStream = new StreamReader(SshProc.getErrorStream(), "DEBUG");
            // any output?
              StreamReader outputStream = new StreamReader(SshProc.getInputStream(), "OUTPUT");
            // kick them off
              errorStream.start();
              outputStream.start();
              int pp =SshProc.waitFor();
              System.out.println("command execution value: "+pp);
         }catch(Exception e) {
              e.printStackTrace();
    class StreamReader extends Thread
        InputStream is;
        String type;
        StreamReader(InputStream is, String type)
            this.is = is;
            this.type = type;
        public void run()
            try
                InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(is);
                BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(isr);
                String line=null;
                while ( (line = br.readLine()) != null) {
                    System.out.println(type + ">" + line);
            } catch (IOException ioe)
                ioe.printStackTrace();
    }When this is executed iam getting process value as "0".
    But nothing is copying to target ..
    So to resolve this i have created a script .. and passed arguments to that script and chaged command as follows :
    String ExCmd = "sh /home/juser/movedir.sh [email protected] /u01/11510/devdb/9.2.0/slax /bin/tar [email protected] /d01/AppsTest/testappl2 /bin/tar /home/juser/test";
    Then it is executing fine. But in my scenario iam restricted to use scripts.
    So plz can any body have a solution for this.
    Thanks, SN

    Iam unable to execute command with &&, it's executing fine only from \&\& ... Can any body tell me how can we make below code as generic, depending on UNIX Shell environment?
    String[] ExCmd     = {"sh", "-c", "ssh [email protected] cd /u01/11510/devdb/9.2.0/slax \\&\\& /bin/tar cf - . | ssh [email protected] cd /d01/AppsTest/testappl2 \\&\\& /bin/tar -xf - > test.log"};
    Process SshProc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(ExCmd);"sh" should be changed here depending on UNIX Environment, because previously i found that in some unix environment's "sh" is not working ..
    So can any one help...
    Thank in advance.

  • Executing UNIX command in Java

    I am having problems executing a command in Java. Here's the code I have for executing:

    Yes, at the begining, I'll tried the unix shell by calling SQL.
    I've the problem of passing the parameters through.
    It seems to me
    we can use
    Host in the SQLPLUS to run the unix command.
    but I've written it in my sqlplus script, it doesn't work. so I wanna to find an exemple how to use HOST in sqlplus script?
    I would have loved to give you an example..but its not unix on my laptop.
    But what i can tell you is...u should be doing otherway round.
    Not calling Unix commands from SQL but calling SQL's form unix.
    You got shell scripts for that.
    Write a shell script. Login to SQL execute your code.
    exit from sql and then move your file with MV. That's it.
    Do post how far you get after trying this.

  • How do run unix command in java

    hi
    All unix command working fine in our java program.
    but i want change user in linux by using java. it's not working.
    "su root" This command onely not working.
    anybody know help me
    This is my ID [email protected]
    This my code
    <% String s = null;
    try{
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("su root");
    BufferedReader stdInput = new BufferedReader(new
    InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
    BufferedReader stdError = new BufferedReader(new
    InputStreamReader(p.getErrorStream()));
    out.println("Here is the standard output of the command:\n");
    while ((s = stdInput.readLine()) != null)
    out.println(s);
    catch(Exception e) {}
    %>

    I don't have further info to add to your first post, but think your guess seems quite reasonable. I thought of starting a new thread on the same topic, but think this (question) fits in here, too.
    I have Java code (freeware, not opensoure), intended for Unix, which basically provides the graphical interface and relies on an I/O layer (C + shell scripts) to do most of the work. I have access to the C+shell scripts which are opensource. I ported it to Cygwin and want to use it under Windows (there is no Cygwin native Java VM).
    My problem now boils down to " how to run commands under Unix and what differences are there with Windows". What are the variants?
    I have to guess what the program is doing when I get an IOException at some point. E.g.: a call to shell script may be made in a different way as to a compiled exe in Unix?. I found a way to bypass path problems because forward slashes are also accepted and /cygdrive/c construct can be replace by c:/; shell scripts can be compiled into exes using shc and they work; if symbolic links are replaced by duplication of exe files, they work. What will happen in an instance whereby a process runs a shell script dynamically, through a pipe (the shell script is compiled in the Cygwin/win version and receives parameters) in a construct like:
    pipefp = epopen(cmdbuf,"w"); /* (cmbuf is "makehdr par1 par2 ... ") (makehdr was a shell script and is now compiled exe for Cygwin/Windows) */?.
    Thanks.

  • Cannot Drag and Drop Computer Name onto saved unix command

    I am using ARD 3.3. When trying to drag a computer from Scanner to a Unix command on the sidebar, it does not populate in the task. You have to manually open the command, and then drop into the Computer list. Deleting the com.apple.remotedesktop.plist will correct the problem for about 1 day, but then it goes back to normal. Is there a setting that I am overlooking?
    Thank you.

    I reinstalled ADE and also changed the USB port I was using. No problems.
    I've called BN tech support twice and they've been very helpful.

  • How to run piped Unix commands

    Hi,
    I'm trying to run piped Unix commands using Runtime.getRuntime().exec(...) but apparently the pipe symbol ("|") doesn't seem to work...
    Here is basically what I'm trying to do: running "command1 | command2" where both "command1" and "command2" have dynamic values. I could create a shell script and execute it through Java but there has to be a cleaner way...
    Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks,
    Thierry

    The | symbol for a pipe is understood by a shell, so it was right to point to this direction.
    If you still have a problem, that might be because of another reason. What did happen, how exactly did it not work? Did you take care of the stdin and stdout channels of the launched process?

  • Send a Unix command through ARD that will change a OS X admin user to a standard user.

    I would love to send a Unix command through ARD that will change a OS X admin user to a standard user. The only thing I found close is
    sudo dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership USERNAME
    which does remove the user from the list of admins, but they are still listed as an admin in the user preference panel, and can still use their account to authenticate for admin privileges.

    I'm not having any problems adding or removing users from the 'admin' group by using the syntax's
    dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
    or
    dscl . -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
    What I'm saying is if a user is ticked as an Adminstrator in System Preferences and I run the
    dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername syntax and remove them from the 'admin' GroupMembership they still have the Administrator box ticked in System Prefs and can administer the machine.
    By the way the '/' doesn't work in the syntax in ARD.
    Thanks
