Unix standard input/output

My issue is: how can I read from Unix standard input in Java when it is piped from another Unix program. For instance:
`cat foo.txt | java MyProgram ?????' . Should I follow this way or should I do in another way?
Thanks

  • External Drive Disk Erase Failed with the Error Input/Output Error

    I have 2 hard drives in an external FW800 enclosure that I am unable to format. When I go to initialize the drives in Disk Utility, I get the following error message: "Disk Erase failed with the error: Input/output error."
    The drives show up in Disk Utility, but I can't repair them (that option is grayed out). Disk Utility correctly ID's the manufacturer of the drives (Maxtor), their size (200gb each), so it's obviously seeing that the drives are there. But it won't let me format them.
    The drives are new, by the way; they don't have any data/files on them. I have Disk Warrior, but the drives don't show up there to be repaired -- probably because they aren't formatted yet.
    After looking at other posts, I tried switching the jumper settings around on the drives -- from Master/Slave to cable select and back again, but it didn't help. I also tried doing a zero erase (even though the drives are new), zapping the PRAM -- again, no help.
    One question I had is whether this could be a bad FW800 cable? The cable is new -- it came with the enclosure, which is an OWC Dual FW 800 enclosure. Other than that, does anyone have any other thoughts about what's causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    SOLUTION!!!!
    I had the exact same problem. I have the original 20 GB hard drive that came in my Powerbook G4 550MHz and a couple of years ago I traded up for a 60 GB drive and bought a FW/USB enclosure for my original drive to use it to backup my important files. I hadn't backed up in over a year (shame on me!) and I decided maybe I should erase the drive and start from scratch. It was connected via USB.
    At that point DiskUtility gave me the exact same Input/Output error. I tried partitioning the drive into 1 or more partitions but came up with the same error. I couldn't figure out what was wrong so I decided to startup in OS 9.2.2, I did that and let it start up, then plugged in the hard drive and it gave me the standard "This disk is unrecognizable, do you want to eject or erase?" so I clicked Initalize. It worked!
    Just make sure you choose the MacOS Extended option when initializing out of OS 9 (instead of the MacOS Standard option) so it can be read and viewed in OS X.
    If your computer is too new to be able to boot from an OS 9 folder on your drive or an OS 9 CD, then see if a friend or a local library has older computers that are running OS 9 or can boot from it. If not let me know and you can send me your drive and I'll reformat it.
    Kind of crazy...I haven't used the OS 9 partition on my HD in YEARS...was even thinking about erasing it since I don't use any Classic applications anymore...good thing I didn't!

    Hi John,
    Actually I need to
    put a unique check on PO1:07 element and need to add the respective PO1:02 element.
    1st PO1:07 = KOW-20392-10
    1st PO1:02 = 93
    2nd PO1:07 = ABX-2001
    2nd PO1:02 = 25
    3rd PO1:07 = ABX-2001
    3rd PO1:02 = 4
    4th PO1:07 = KOW-20392-10
    4th PO1:02 = 2
    Then as PO1:07 for 1st and 4th are same, then in the output there should be one <LineItems> with <PONumber> as KOW-20392-10 and <Quantity> should be added as 93+2 = 95
    Similarly as PO1:07 for 2nd and 3rd are same, then in the output there should be another <LineItems> with <PONumber> as ABX-2001 and <Quantity> should be added as 25+4 = 29
    I want to use the XSLT code but as input is X12 850 standard structure I am not able use the XSLT properly.
    It would be great if you can check the X12 4010 850 message standard structure and let us know how to implement this.

  • Problem Removing Files: Input/Output Error

    I recently posted this article
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4596969#4596969
    about my struggles to repair my hard drive. I'm currently in Single-User Mode, in the process of manually removing files that returned the error "Overlapped Extent Allocation" during fsck. Everything's going well for the most part, but a few of the files I'm finding can't be removed. When I try, I receive this message:
    hfs: WARNING - blocks on volume Garfunkel not allocated!
    rm: [path name]: Input/output error
    It all sounds very dire and life-threatening, but I have no idea what this means. I can only assume it means there is a permissions issue. Am I close? Is there a way I can remove these files? So far all of the files have been iCalendar files or iApps preference files. If it's important, I can list the exact files. I hope someone can help me, because I know very little about Unix.
    Thanks to everyone who makes an attempt at rescuing me!

    Thanks. I did that, as per the Apple Support article instructions, but apparently I have to do it before every remove command. And sometimes, I have to input the command twice for it to work. Thanks for the tip.

  • MacBook Disk Utility: "Input/Output Error" When Backing up my iBook

    Alright, here's the skinny:
    I'm backing up an iBook's system drive while in Target Disk Mode via my MacBook using DiskUtility. The drive I'm saving the image to is an HFS+ USB 2.0 enclosed standard 3.5" drive. I start the process and things go just fine--
    --but then!
    "The device you removed was not properly put away. Data might have been lost or damaged. Before you unplug your device, you must first select its icon in the Finder and choose Eject from the File menu."
    So yeah, about five minutes into the backup, I get one of those lovely "Device Removal" notices, even though I haven't touched anything and no drive has gone unmoutned in Finder (or in /Volumes/). After this I get a plain jane "Input/Output Error" message and am left in the dark.
    Here's what I've tried:
    -Restarting, killing every unrelated user-level process
    -Disconnecting every other device, media, and peripheral from both machines
    -Running the machine in "Better Energy Savings" mode and disconnecting the PSU in case FW or USB was fritzing from the 83C of heat the computer was causing.
    Alright. Somebody help.

    Had issue partitioning 2TB my passport drive, got input/output error while using disk utility.
    Here is what I did to get my external disk back
    In Disk Utility
    1) Try to use erase option first, it failed
    2) Try to partition the disk, failed as well.
    3) Then try erase option again, then ...   it worked !!

  • Input/Output error plus CS5.1 download error (mac)

    Hi. Sorry for the long story.
    Yesterday, my Photoshop CS5.5 crashed and I was unable to open the program. I tried all my Adobe products and it was the same. I attempted to uninstall (for some reason Illustrator refuses to uninstall) and had hoped I could reinstall my Creative Suite 4 I purchased back in 2010. I also have a Photoshop CS5.5 disc- all with the serial numbers that came with them, too.
    Here comes the problem on my end: my old computer cannot read discs anymore. I tried for several hours to get my MacBook to read the discs- nothing. So, I turned to the forums and found a download link for all of the previous versions of Photoshop. I found Photoshop CS5.5, I hit download. Everything goes smoothly until I look at what I've downloaded- it's CS5.1, not CS5.5
    Adobe has mistakenly placed CS5.1 in the CS5.5 Photoshop download and no matter who I talk to through the web tech support they can't seem to understand what I'm trying to say. My serial number works but it's only for CS5.5, obviously. And yes, they've checked, it should still be valid for CS5.5, if I can ever get the download to work for me!
    So concludes my first problem.
    My second problem is with a message I keep getting when attempting to install any other version of Photoshop- the "input/output error" message. I figured, well, since I can't get CS5.5, I'll try my Creative Suite CS4. But after I download the .dmg and attempt to open the file and start the installation, I get this
    I tried Creative Suite 4: Design Standard, Photoshop CS4, and Photoshop CS5- all gave me the same message. Is this an issue with my computer or an issue with the download?
    For reference I have a MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8 and I'm trying to install either Photoshop CS5.5 or Adobe Creative Suite 4: Design Standard and I have serial numbers for both

    Use another browser for the download, though both your issues potentially point to your harddrive being on the verge of breaking down completely and/or your system requiring an operating system reinstall...

    2. Is there a maximum number of process that can/should be passed to -e option?
    Thanks in advance for your answer.

    Hello Benoît,
    if I understood correctly, your brbackup was not started interactively, but in background, by crontab or DB13 or something like that.
    As you perhaps know, signal 2 usually means that the process was interrupted by a ctrl-C from keyboard. This should not happen for a background process.
    It could be that someone played around with kill command.
    I rather suspect some resource bottleneck.
    Could you please check Unix kernel parameters (or whatever their equivalent in SunOS is called - I am not familiar with it).
    Or any suspicious entries in Unix log files?
    regards

    Hello, I finally have Arch running on my MacBook pro 3,1 (mid 2007) but when I startx after installing Nvidia drivers it gives the Input/Output error and states "could not open device file /dev/nvidia0." I tried everything from the Nvidia wiki, and nothing seems to work. Does anyone please have any other ideas or things to try? • I'm having trouble using standard input inside JDB

    Hello Java(R) community
    The problem is:
    I cannot read a stream of characters from the keyboard inside JDB. Just to set context I'm using:
    jdk 1.3.1_01 with jdb version 99/06/11 under RedHat(R) Linux(R) 7.1
    I've written the following code:
    1:import java.io.*;
    2:
    3:public class Test {
    4:
    5: Reader reader = new InputStreamReader(System.in);
    6: char[] buffer = new char[256];
    7:
    8: public void myRead() {
    9:
    10: System.out.print("Insert some text: ");
    11: try {
    12: reader.read(buffer);
    13: }
    14: catch (IOException e) {
    15: System.out.println(e.getMessage());
    16: }
    17: System.out.println("You've inserted the following text: " + new String(buffer));
    18: }
    19:
    20: public static void main(String[] args) {
    21:
    22: Test ref = new Test();
    23: ref.myRead();
    24: }
    25:}
    The above is compiled with javac -g Test.java
    At the shell you run ' java Test ' and it just echoes the input you give to it
    Inside jdb you set a breakpoint with ' stop in Test.myRead()'. When there, it stops at line 10; you invoke the 'next' command and it just don't print the message (just becuse it's not a println it just don't flush I suppose); after that the next line to execute is 12; so you invoke 'next' again and the real problem happens! Nothing can be read from the standard input. If you try to run the 'list' command jdb says "Current thread isn't suspended".
    Does anyone knows what's going on?
    Thanks in advance for a reply.

    If you use the launching connector to start the debugee,
    (this is the default used when you start jdb)
    then jdb cannot tell the difference between jdb commands
    that you are typing, and other text you want sent to the
    debugee program. You will have the same problem with
    output going the other way. The debugee program output
    will be mixed in with any jdb output that comes along.
    This is because the controlling window has only one stdin,
    stdout, stderr that both processes (as well as anything else
    you are running in that window) are forced to share.
    You need to separate the debugger and debugee, as follows:
    1) Start the debugee program (HelloWorld in this example)
    in one command window:
    % java -Xdebug -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,address=4571 HelloWorld
    2) In another window, attach your debugger (jdb in this example)
    to the debugee via a socket:
    % jdb -connect com.sun.jdi.SocketAttach:hostname=localhost,port=4571
    You may also use the shared memory transport if you are
    on a win32 platform, as follows:
    1) In one command window:
    % java -Xdebug -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_shmem,server=y,address=mine HelloWorld
    2) In a second command window (again using jdb as an example):
    % jdb -connect com.sun.jdi.SharedMemoryAttach:name=mine

  • Input Output scaling

    Hey everyone,
    first of all apologies if this has been asked before, I am sure it has been, but I tried to look through the topics, and simply did not know what to search for. Here's my question.
    I am using Video in 1280x800, which I do have as files lying on my desktop. I want to cut that, add music, just the normal stuff, and want to output those files to the same format,1280x800, or at least something close enough.
    Right now, what happens is that all the clips are 1280x800, but my output is 1280x800 with a much smaller frame containing the video inside. I know it does have something to do with the video settings for the project and the files and the output. It's just such a plethora of things, and I don't find a comprehensive answer to how to configure this....
    Would anyone out there be able and willing to give me an explanation for stupid people, as to how I have to configure FCP when using video files already on the computer (in this case, captured)?
    Thanks a lot!
    M.

    David,
    thanks for your quick answer.
    they are from within World of Warcraft in this case. The client does have a built-in capture option, and they are in a format FCP does not understand. I let them run through... what's the name... don't remember, sorry, a conversion tool that will convert them to a format FCP understands.
    So, importing is not a problem, I did that and until I am totally wrong I accepted the suggestion, but for some reason, before I started actually changing things after cutting the movie, I got 720x576 as output. And I am pretty sure that the reason for that is that my standard input usually is a small video camcorder... I just think that my whole setup might be messed up, and since - at my home - I am not using any professional equipment, everything just seems to be rotten.
    So what you are telling me is that upon importing the first clip, the sequence settings should change automatically? I will give that a try. Is there any way I can do a total reset of FCP, like deleting all preferences and stuff like that?
    M.

  • Redirect standard input from file to terminal

    Is there any way to redirect standard input from file to terminal within the same program? That is, get data from a file then redirect standard input to make it interactive with the terminal?

    Duh, you're right. I researched this looking for a way to change the working directory and found that you could not change that after launch - for some reason I remembered it wrong as being the stderr, stdin, and stdout in addition.

  • Reading standard input

    i don't know why it's not working when i use BufferedReading and System.in to read input from the keyboard.
    //taking a1, a2 from the standard input
    BufferedReader bin = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
    System.out.println("Please enter a1,a2 separated by space...");
    System.out.flush();
    try {
    line = bin.readLine();
    System.out.println("Your input line was "+ line);
    } catch (IOException e) {e.printStackTrace();}
    when i run it the output goes like:
    Please enter a1,a2 separated by space...
    Your input line was
    Then the program just abruptly ended.
    i know this might be a dumb question. but i really don't understand why Java doesn't have an easier way to take input like in C.
    Please help! thanks a bunch.

    hey, i was not prompted for any input! that's why i am puzzled. i am used to the simple syntax in C:
    printf("enter blah blah...");
    scanf("%s",name)
    am i missing the line that's actually prompting the user for input?
    thanks!

  • External Hard Drive Input/Output error

    I recently started having problems with an external hard drive setup that I did not have problems with prior to upgrading to 10.5.5 and trying to setup the drive to be compatible with Time Machine.
    The hard drive enclosure that I have has 2 bays for two SATA drives. I have used this enclosure without any problems until I tried to get 1 drive to act as the backup drive for Time Machine and the other to be storage. I formatted them using Drive Genius. I used the option for GUILD or GUIL which it said was the better format for using with Time Machine.
    The first problem I ran into since upgrading and reformatting the drives is I got an "input/output" error the first couple times I connected the drive via USB to my Mac. I could still use the drives but I got weird errors every once in a while like "input/output error" or "device was not ejected properly" even though the device had not been unplugged.
    Now the drives will not mount using OS 10.5.5. The drives show up when I open Disk Utility, but I cannot get them to mount. I have ran Disk Utility First Aid, and it says the drives are fine. There is one error that shows up when I run the "Repair Disk" feature. It reads "Invalid content in Journal". But Disk Utility also says "The volume was repaired successfully".
    I have seen some posts when I do a search in google about this issue and it seems this is a known issue. Every suggestion I see says to insert your Tiger DVD and reformat the drive using that and the problem will be solved. The only problem with that is I have a lot of important files on the drive that I cannot lose. I had the files backed up until I moved them to the new drive a while back. Now I do not have a backup because I was in the process of switching to bigger drives and erased the old drives after doing so because everything was working fine.
    I am hoping someone out there may have some suggestions (other than erasing the drive) to get my dives to mount so I can transfer the data off to another drive and reformat after.
    Thanks,
    Paul Rugg

    Thanks for the suggestion.
    Do you think that would work better than Drive Genius? I bought Drive Genius 2 and it does not even see the drives when they are plugged in unlike Disc Utility which can see the drives but cannot mount either one.
    Maybe this following post I made to a different questions may help. The data on the drive is other buying another program for if it will work. I think my next step may be to go over to a friends place and try to mount the drives on his computer and transfer stuff off if they connect.
    text below posted to other question relating to external hard drive problem.
    I have recently had the same mounting issue with my new external hard drive. I just purchased a new 750Gb Western Digital Sata drive and got everything transfered over to it. Immediately, I got an error saying that the drive had been ejected incorrectly even though it was still plugged in. I was a little curious. I restarted the computer (hard drive still plugged in via USB 2.0) and the drive showed up just fine. I plugged another 250Gb drive into the same case (2 bays) and the 250GB drive showed up just fine.
    Well, I then noticed there was an OS upgrade available when I ran Software update so i ran it and when I rebooted the drives were gone. I can see the drives in Disc Utility, but they will not mount. Drive Genius cannot see either disc. Disc Utility says I need to repair the drives, but when I do it says they are fixed but they don not mount.
    The problem really seems to be related to mounting USB external drives. I got ahold of 2 seperate external firewire hard drives and one shows up just fine while the other has the same problem (both work on other systems. I would try wiping the drives and reformatting but ALL MY stuff is on them and not everything has been backed up. Yuck! I have not tried connecting my hard drive to another Mac yet.
    The drives being used are #1 Maxtor Maxline Plus II 250GB SATA/150 HDD 1.5b/s 7Y250m00654ra
    and #2 Western Digital WD7500AACS WD Caviar GP Green Power drive.
    I have another post similar to this and I have not received any feedback, but I have been doing my own searching and have found similar posts on the net.
    Anybody have any clue what might be going on here? It really seems to be related to my upgrade.
