Unknown group after TM restore

On my previous mac, I created a group in /etc/group to enable file sharing between multiple local users. It seems that the TM restore of the users files copied the group permission bits correctly, but did not update /etc/group. That is, when I do an "ls -l" on a shared folder, I see the group-id, and not the group name. In addition, other users of the group are not able to view the shared files in the Finder.
I then added the entry to /etc/group and rebooted, but that did not change anything.
How can I restore shared group file access?
Thanks,
Anthony

Here's what I did:
1. Noted the missing group-id is 100 from the output of ls -l.
2. Created a group in System Preferences/Accounts and used the Advanced Options to set its group-id to 100.
3. Rebooted.
4. Noticed the newly created group is missing from the System Preferences/Accounts groups list (maybe having something to do with the group-id < 500?).</div>
yes, groups with gid <500 don't show up in system preferences.
<div class="jive-quote">5. Noticed the group name was listed in the output of dscl . -list /groups
6. The "(unknown)" group (not the new group name) was still listed in the Sharing & Permissions tab in the Get Info window and was still not removable.
what does
ls -l give now? is the ggroup name correctly reported when you do that? if not just try chgrp.
Where can I find out what database the Finder is reading for the Sharing & Permissions list?
not aware of any such database besides directory services. I suspect Finder interacts with the Directory services directly. Finder is known to do this sort of thing but it shouldn't be happening to groups you make yourself. In particular, users who upgraded from Tiger have GID=UID (in leopard the default GID=20) and their groups display as "unknown" in Finder.

  • Unknown error 0xE800002E in regard to syncing applications after a restore

I recently had to restore my 2G iPhone. Since then I have had problems syncing and updating some of my applications. I get the message, "Some of the applications in your iTunes library were not installed on the iPhone (name of iPhone) because one or more errors occurred. The arror is always the same and is referred to as "Unknown error (0xE800002E). None of my searches for this error produce results. The four applications referenced are on my iPhone, contrary to what the message says, but when there are updates the sync process breaks down. I visited the Genius Bar and they managed to clear the logjam of unsynced updates but they could not explain how and I still get the error message every time I sync. There have been no new updates since the logjam was cleared so I do not know if updates are still a problem. The fact that I continue to get the eror message suggests that I still have a problem. Can someone explain to me what error (0xE800002E)is and how I might resolve it?

Thank you. The discussion thread that you recommended was very interesting. It started about the same time that I began having problems of another sort with my iPhone and ended up doing a "restore". The first updates after the "restore" would download but not install. The updates began piling up, etc. as I explained in my initial inquiry. In checking my log, I see that I updated to iTunes v.8 on Sept. 11 and started having problems and did the "restore" on Sept. 13 and visited Genuius Bar an the 14th to resolve some issues from the "restore" (iPhone was jittery, jumping from app to app, stirring up icons, etc.). Following that I started having problems installing updates. I was on vacation from Sept. 17 to 29, began getting the 0xE800002E message approx. Sept. 15 and by the time I returned, I had three updates that would not install--Bloomberg, Units and Ecco Note Lite. Back to the Genuius Bar on Sept. 30, got the three updates installed but continued to receive the error message but no new updates. The error message references only four apps, three of which are the ones that would not install plus Sol Free. So there is somewhat of a disconnect between the sequence of events in my case and those described in the discussion that you referred me to. I am a very senior citizen, and since I had problems following my "restore" the first time around, will delay doing another "restore" until I am having an "I can tackle anything" day. I would ask the Genius Bar to do it but it takes too much time and I don't want to wear out my welcome. It is also a chore to lug my computer to the Apple Store. Thank you for your suggestion. I think I will leave my question up a while longer to see what else turns up and will jump into the new discussion as well. One has to also fault Apple in that I was not able to locate that discussion through the search feature before initiating my own discussion.

  • ITunes Unknown Error -48 - no music on iPod after a restore

I did the 5 R's after having "freezing up" issue with my iPod - went in to sync iTunes with iPod after the restore step, and know I am getting this error message. I did a search and can't find a solution for -48, or even what it means. The songs will sync to about #40 or so, then it stops completely and ejects my iPod as the error message comes up. Please help - no music on my iPod.

Received no help from this board - took it back into store and they said it was a hard drive error ands replaced the iPod under my 3-year plan. Always buy that. I have needed it twice.

  • A different way to deal with "unknown" user after upgrade from Tiger.

It's a known issue that doing upgrade and install or archive and install from Tiger to Leopard, produces a lot of folders with "unknown" group in their "get info" panel. This has to do with a different group structure in Tiger and Leopard.
In Tiger, every user has their own private group with the same name as the username. That group is set to be user's primary group.
In leopard, every new user with an account is a member of the group staff (gid=20) which is not present in Tiger. Leopard doesn't fully understand Tiger's private group structure, hence the "unknown" group. This causes various problems such as Finder crashes when trying to change the permissions and ownership in the get info window.
Apple's proposed way of dealing with this is described [here|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307128].
However, this method doesn't change the existing group structure and doesn't resolve all the problems.
I'd like to suggest a different way of dealing with it.
    1. create a new admin user (if you don't have one already), log out of your primary account and log into the new one.
    2. enter the following in terminal:
    *sudo dscl . delete /users/"username"*
where username is the short name of the user on the main account (not the one you are currently logged into).
    This will delete that user.
    3. Log out/in.
    4. go to system preferences->accounts and create a new user with the name and short name exactly as the one you've deleted in step 2.
You'll be get a popup saying that a home directory by this name already exists and asking if you want to use it. Say "Yes".
That's it. Your main user will be recreated using the native group structure of Leopard with gid=20(staff). Permissions on your home directory will be reset with correct group and ownership.
I tested the process on my powerbook after an upgrade and install from Tiger to leopard and it worked without a hitch.
I like this method better than Apple's because it completely gets rid of Tiger's group structure which was creating all the confusion. The only downside as far as I can see is that you might have to manually change the group ownership on some files belonging to the main user that sit outside your home directory.
I would appreciate any comments on this.

hmm, I confess, I did this before installing 10.5.2 so i can't say for sure. However, I've dealt with a few people (see e.g. this [thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7012957]) who are running 10.5.2 and still have this issue. I don't know what if anything 10.5.2 did about this but I'm quite sure that it didn't change the group structure inherited from Tiger.

  • Unknown Group - Causes Finder Crash - How do I change group?

Many directories and files on my system after installing Leopard have an "Unknown" group and when I open a "Get Info" window on them and click the "Add" button the beachball appears and Finder crashes.
MacFixit stated "This problem appears to be due to a bad group setting. You can alleviate the issue by putting afflicted users back into the "Staff" group (GID 20) via the following Terminal command:
sudo dscl . append /Groups/staff GroupMembership username
(where "username" is replaced by the afflicted user's name)."
However, this did not solve my problem. Said files and directories still have "uknown" groups and Finder still crashes when I click the "Add" button in the Get Info window.
    How to fix?

    McToast wrote:
In Tiger, a group with the same name as your username would be created and the UID and GID would match. However, Leopard doesn't seem to be doing that anymore.
No, now it has reverted to the behaviour of 10.2 and before. All normal user accounts were made members of the "staff" group by default. admin users were also made members of the "admin" group, plus a couple of others. There are a lot more in Leopard. Trust me, you will have far fewer problems if you make your primary group 20. Your 'id' output should ideally look like
    macbook:~ michaelc$ id
    uid=501(michaelc) gid=20(staff) groups=20(staff),98(lpadmin),81(appserveradm),
    103(com.apple.sharepoint.group.3),102(com.apple.sharepoint.group.2),
    101(com.apple.sharepoint.group.1),104(com.apple.sharepoint.group.4),
    79(_appserverusr),80(admin)
(I put some new lines in there to stop the excessively long line).
I don't know what those sharepoint groups are, either, in case you're wondering

  • Provisioning Profiles Generation gives "Unknown Error" after Selecting Members

Well, I can no longer generate provisioning profiles because it gives an unknown error after selecting members and clicking continue. Any workarounds?

They mentioned when I called that the (-18) error is a network error because of their activation servers being down at this time. They said the activation servers are used to authenticate restores through iTunes for the iPhone. It should be back up tonight or tomorrow sometime according to support.
So if its not back up by tomorrow I will call again. Thanks for the help.

  • HT4972 previously used apps won't work after system restore?ipod touch 2nd gen.?

My son forgot his passcode so I had to restore his ipod touch, 2nd gen.  After the restore, many of his apps no longer work.  He had Netflix, Facebook, Angry Birds.  They now all say they require ios 4.3 or 5.0.  Does anyone know how to get these apps back on his ipod?  thanks!

Many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

  • Notes on third-party apps closing (not really crashing) after a restore

    Hello,
I'm adding the umpteenth message about a problem that, after happening basically with each single iPhone change since my old iPhone 3G onwards, I would say it's pretty common.
I have solved this problem recently with a third sequence of actions, so I'm posting my brief "history of restores" for the benefit of others. I hope I've tagged this post eloquently enough to make it easy to find.
So, in most (if not all) cases of previous restores I've bumped in the classic issue where after the restore process (which, BTW, involves always a few more sudden phone restarts than expected) only the "native" iPhone apps run normally. All the others appear for an instant and then close. They don't really crash because both in iOS 6 and iOS 7 you can see them as "running" by double-tapping the iPhone front button. Moreover, those with active notifications will actually notify the user regularly. Their UI, though, doesn't go past the splash screen.
The underlying cause, also considering it relates only to apps downloaded via App Store, is presumably some DRM-related information that gets messed up during the restore process.
My personal experience included previously two distinct solutions, and each of those only worked in that occasion, i.e. has been useless in the other cases:
The oldest, and still most documented solution, was just to download, via iPhone, a new app from the app store. After a restart, or maybe even without one, the new app and all the others started working.
The second, less mentioned online but still pretty widespread, was to sign out from the Apple Store on the iPhone, and then sign back in.
This time, where I got a replacement for my iPhone 4s because of the common problem of the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip getting "burned" or dislodged, I tried both the solutions above but they didn't work. In the process, I've found other possible solutions that didn't work:
Deauthorizing iTunes on the Mac and then reauthorizing it.
Getting a new app via iTunes and then syncing the iPhone
Sign out/in with iCloud on the iPhone.
I was therefore close to abandoning my 877 apps already configured and organized in folders in the previous backups, and willing to accept the burden of setting up the iPhone as a new phone.
Nevertheless, I still hoped that a "mixed approach" would work and, indeed, it worked.
Here is the sequence that worked in my latest case:
Restore the iPhone as a new phone
Open the App Store on the iPhone and get a new app, not among those already downloaded previously
Open that app and see that it works (actually, after an iPhone replacement steps 1-3 would make sense anyway to check that the phone works properly)
Start a restore from a previous backup
As soon as the apps start syncing again, open the first app already sync'd and check that it works. It should work, that's what happened to me, and so you can wait the whole time required to sync back all the apps.
My experience involves also a falsification of the statement that the problem resides on individual backups. This is false because I've used the same backup, at step 4, that I selected before going through 1-3 and that was not working initially. Moreover, after step 5, I've realized that the old backup I had used was too old because yesterday evening, while I had my iPhone still misbehaving with third-party apps, I took a few pictures that would have gone lost using the old backup. I have then started again from step 4 with a backup from the night after the pics, when I was fiddling to fix my issues. Also the newer backup, clearly done while the apps where "bad", ended with all my apps working again.
Basically, once the "physical" phone runs third-party apps, than any backup would work. The (missing) authorization portion that causes the misbehaviour might be related to the phone IMEI, or some other piece of information that is not included in backups.
Does anyone know a specific thread here or blog post on some website where there is a collection of cases like mine?
I'm not looking forward to seeing what voodoo variation will be required the next time I replace my iPhone...
    Hope this helps.
    All the best,
    Giovanni

  • How can I recover my game after I restored my iPad? The game was online so I thought it won't be affected even if I restore my ipad. After restoring, and downloading my game, it started to level 1. Please help. I've been playing that game for about a year

My game was 'fashion story' and currently level 90. But after I restored my iPad, it went back to level 1. Please please help

Do you have a backup of the device before you restored it? If you have a backup, try to restore the device from that backup.
If you don't, I doubt that there's anything anyone here can do for you. Seems as though your save game, (despite being an "online" game) was wiped out with the restore. I'd say the vast majority of online games still do keep your save data on the device and NOT in "the cloud".
In this case, a backup of the device would have helped you out...it's always wise to backup your device before proceeding with a restore, especially if you plan to restore the device as new.

  • IPod Touch still stuck on connect to iTunes screen after the restore. iTunes went blank.

Hi, I'm having problems with my iPod Touch. My iPod went off because the battery was empty. And when I tried connecting it to my laptop to recharge, the "connect to iTunes" screen suddenly appeared. According to iTunes I need to RESTORE it for it to work. And that's exactly what I did. However, after the restore and all, the screen is still stuck on the "connect to iTunes" screen.
By the way, it's a 2nd generation iPod Touch. And it's an MC model.
And to make things worse, my iTunes screen is totally empty. The RESTORE option is gone and I really don't know what to do anymore.
Hope you guys can help me out! I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

iPod nano won't sync podcasts from iTunes after I "Restored" the iPod.

If you've read the Technical Specification you will find that the nano can only use Firewire for charging, not for syncing:
