Unlocked iPhone + AppleCare

Hey, anyone know what happens if my phone breaks if I did the software unlock on the iphone? Did I void applecare by doing the software unlock? Thanks guys...

Allan is correct with his quote. That is offical Apple policy.
However, Apple is about customer service.
What I suggest (and Apple has the final say if/when it comes down to service) is that if you have an issue with the phone, wipe it clean and restore it to factory software. If the problem persists, send it in for repair. Apple will let you know if they feel it is not covered by warranty.
Certain types of hardware damage can be caused by software not intended for the device (overclocking can kill the processor and memory components, volme boosting can destroy the receiver and speaker.)
Certain types of hardware failure would not be related to such software (i.e. if you steal music or ringtones, it wouldn't cause a hardware issue, just jail time.) Apple will be able to determine the nature of the failure and in doing so will let you know if it is or is not covered.
On an ethcial note, if you do something such as overclocking and you cook the thing, please don't try to send it in for a "freebie."
I would suggest NOT using any volume hacks, overclocks, brightness hacks, etc. They will know, and deny repair.

  • Applecare replacement for officially unlocked iPhone 3G concern

I've got an officially unlocked O2 iPhone with current Applecare warranty and a cracked case.
I'm concerned as I now have an Orange SIM in the phone and no longer have an O2 account/SIM.
Assuming Apple will replace the phone under warranty at a Genius Bar; will they provide me with already unlocked replacement?

Quick update for those searching a similar issue...
Both AppleCare and the Genius Bar will only replace my officially unlocked iPhone with a LOCKED phone. As I'm now out of contract with O2 I will not ever be able to get the phone unlocked legally!
Sorry state of affairs; Apple really needs to accommodate this scenario effectively. Hopefully I can persuade them to give me a locked phone on Orange..otherwise I'm stuck with a SIM and iPhone that will no longer work together.

As kb1951 states, unless this phone was purchased directly from Apple, it is not officially unlocked. In the US, only Apple sells officially unlocked iPhones. The message you got generally means your phone was hacked to unlock it...jailbroken...Apple's servers have detected such & are preventing your phone from activating...there's nothing wrong with the activation servers.
You'll need a sim card from the carrier your phone is locked to in order to activate it. If you don't know what carrier, you'll have to call AppleCare in the US to determine this info. Be aware, US carriers will not authorize official unlocking unless you are a customer that used the phone on their network. Thus, there is most likely no way for you to get this phone officially unlocked.
    Good luck.

  • I purchased an unlocked iPhone 4S from US and returned to india, but now I can't activate the phone.

I purchased an unlocked iPhone 4S from US and returned to india, but now I can't activate the phone. Called up the apple support team in India they said it is already unlocked from AT&T. What am I suppose to do ?
Previously my iTunes was showing the phone and summary etc etc. The India Support center asked me to upgrade it to 5.1.1 then the new sim will be recognised, but now nothing is happening, even iTunes is not showing the Summary page.
    Please suggest?
I never expected apple stuff to be like this.

I bought an unlocked iPhone 5s from USA and travel back to my counry but won't work in my country

Well, there is nothing anyone here can do for you. Did you actually purchase it at an Apple Store, or at another retailer like BestBuy, HH Gregg, a mall kiosk, T-Mobile, AT&T, etc?
The ONLY source for unlocked iPhones in the US is Apple. If you purchased it anywhere other than at an Apple Store, you purchased a locked phone.
You can call AppleCare and give them the serial number of the phone to confirm the status of the lock.

  • Official Apple Unlocked iPhone, not supported by Apple

Whilst I was travelling in South East Asia, I needed to purchase a new phone.
I found a supplier of iPhones in Thailand that sold me an Official Apple Unlocked iPhone, it turned out to be an Italian iPhone, again an official Apple one.
I needed an unlocked phone that I could use in many different countries, using local SIM cards.
I have been very happy with the phone, it needed updating to v2 and this did not cause any problems.
I was just speaking with AppleCare about an unrelated issue. at the end of the conversation I mentioned that the only thing about the iPhone that was disappointing about the iPhone was the volume of the speaker phone. The agent took the serial number of the iPhone and put me through to iPhone support.
The iPhone agent then took the serial number again and told me that I had an Italian iPhone, because it was bought in Thailand, support was only available through Thailand, she also told me that using a SIM card other than that of an official carrier voided the warranty.
All this seems a bit restrictive, for people in my position, to buy an Official Apple product and then be denied support defeats the object of sourcing an unlocked product in the first place. I can understand why Apple refuse to support iPhones that are unofficially unlocked, but to deny support for an official product seems grossly unfair.
Anyone else had problems getting Apple to support their own products, any ideas how this situation can be resolved?
    Jeremy

Apple clearly states that an iPhone is supported only in the country in which is was officially distributed. If you purchased an Italian-distributed iPhone in Thailand, it was imported and sold against Apple's terms and contracts and so you may indeed have problems getting it serviced since it will not show as being sold in the correct country. Using a SIM from another carrier is also unsupported. The only places in Thailand where can purchase an iPhone that will be supported by Apple in that country are True Move stores or Apple Premium Resellers. See:
    http://www.apple.com/asia/iphone/buy/#th
for links to approved locations. Any such iPhone sold will be supported only in Thailand.
At this point you're probably stuck since you have an unofficially-sold iPhone. Your best route will be to sell your current iPhone and purchase one from an official dealer in your country of residence. Do not buy one in any other country (unless you'll be in that country for months or years), whether it's unlocked or carrier-locked, or you'll have the same problem.

If your phone is officially unlocked, you will get an officially unlocked iPhone if yours is replaced under warranty. Apple maintains a data base of officially unlocked iPhones & can verify whether your phone is officially unlocked or not. To be safe, point this out to the genius bar, if you go to an Apple store or whoever you talk to, if dealing with AppleCare.

  • Unlocked iPhone 4s from UK does not appear to be unlocked in greece?

    Hi.
I am based in the UK. My wife got this iPhone 4s as an upgrade from EE/Orange and she was told it is unlocked. Indeed, she passed it on to me and I used it with a vodafone sim card and had no problems.
Now I am in greece, on holiday, and I wanted to put in it a greek sim card (cosmote). I get the message:
The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone.
I am not sure who to contact. Vodafone UK? Cosmote in greece? Apple?
    Many thanks for any help

The ONLY place, in the UK, to get an officially unlocked iPhone, is from Apple. I suspect what you actually have is what's called a "sim free" iPhone...not officially unlocked, but rather locks to the first UK carrier's sim inserted in the phone...in your case that would be Vodafone. You can call AppleCare, in the UK, to confirm this...Apple maintains the database of officially unlocked iPhones. If that's the case(I'll bet it is), only Vodafone can process the official unlocking of this phone.

  • Does an unlocked iPhone REALLY start at 649$?

Doesn't unlocked iPhone really start at $649? Does that include taxes or what? Do we really have to buy a warranty for the phone? So does it end up costing like $800 after 10% tax for example and about $100 warranty? Someone please reply..

Depending on where you live and and the local sales tax, yes, that sounds about right (if yo get AppleCare+). Plus the cost of the T-Mobile plan for the period you would have to use it (since technically, there are no unlocked iPhone 6 models as of yet, just the T-Mobile non contract).
To be honest, however, those of us that get ours subsidized through the like of Verizon or AT&T pretty much end up paying the same thing, we just do it through hidden cost in the cellular provider contract.

This is a user-to-user support forum. We can't tell you anything. However, if you call AppleCare, they should be able to tell you. See the Contact Us link at the bottom right of every page.

  • Unlocked iphone activation

I use an unlocked iphone 4, it only activates a new sim card on itunes. The phone doesn't activate new sim cards on wifi because it says no service when try to do it this way. Does this mean the unlocked iphone is faulty because I don't have the option to do it both ways?

AppleCare have informed me that, even though I never saw this when using different SIMs on my original iPhone 4S, this is actually the expected behaviour.  It apparently forms part of the process where new APN settings are downloaded and installed etc.
Odd that no-one here on the forums posted to mention this, and equally odd that, depite asking AppleCare to get back to me with a link to a KB article or similar on this matter, nothing has been forthcoming.
I'm still not convinced this is supposed to happen, but hey ho.

  • Siri is prompting to unlock Iphone 6 when pressing home button for voice dial of existing contact

Just upgraded me to an IPhone 6. I restored my new phone from recent back up so all contacts, etc. are there. Also updated to latest OS.
If I depress the home button Siri is now prompting me to unlock my IPhone.
    Scenario:
Depress Home button to activate Siri
    Say "Call Home:"
Siri responds "You'll need unlock your IPhone first"
    Unlock IPhone
Siri responds "Just to confirm - you'd like to call home".
I used to be able to just say "Call home" and it would just dial.....no unlock...no confirmation.
What's changed? Is there a setting I need to tweak?
    Running iOS 8.1.1
    Thanks

    Hi teturner,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your new iPhone 6. If you are unable to voice dial from your lock screen, you may want to see if the setting to disable Siri when the phone is locked is enabled, as is noted here:
Prevent access to Siri when iPhone is locked. Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode (iPhone models with Touch ID) or Settings > Passcode (other models). You can also disable Siri by turning on restrictions. See Restrictions.

  • Issue with Airplane Mode on legitimately unlocked iPhone

    Hi,
I bought an iPhone in Australia from a distributor for one of the large carriers. I bought the white 16Gb outright and paid the fee to have the phone unlocked (as is permitted in Australia). It all worked well with both an Aus and a UK SIM card I had.
The white plastic back then cracked so I took it to an Apple store where they replaced it. I told the Genius that I'd had it unlocked and he said no problems, etc, etc.
He replaced the phone and I took it home, all seemed to work well. Again, with both SIMs.
I installed the 2.2 firmware upgrade.
    Now to the troublesome bit.
Sitting in Melbourne airport, about to leave Australia for some significant time, I swapped the SIMs over and the phone started complaining about needing to be connected to iTunes.
I did this and it unlocked (again).
Question 1: Do I really have to connect to iTunes every time I change the SIM?
I replaced the SIM with my Aus one and turned the phone off to fly to Kuala Lumpur. On arrival in KL I swapped SIMs again, went through the hassle of connecting to iTunes to unlock.
Then, as I wanted to use the phone on my net flight to watch movies and play Fuzzle, I turned on Airplane Mode with the UK SIM.
The phone instantly complains about the SIM being changed and asks to be connected to iTunes. I did this (getting annoyed at this point)! This time, iTunes reports that the phone is fauly and I should take to an Apple Store
I then replaced the SIM with my Aus one, and it all started working nicely again including allowing me to use Airporne Mode.
Question 2: Why can't I use Airplane Mode when my UK SIM is installed?
This seems like a bug to me, rather than some complication with Airplane mode. Surely if my phone has been unlocked and I can make calls with both SIMs, then I can use Airplane Mode regardless of which SIM I'm using?
Added complication here is that I'm not going back to Australia for a while (maybe years), so unless Apple are nice to me and decide that the phone is faulty and will replace it in the UK, I'm going to be left with an expensive, and white, iPod Touch.
    Cheers for any suggestions,
    Ian

I don't think the problem lies specifically with the SIM card, but with the software on the phone.
I would appreciate others trying to replicate my problem with their iPhones. Simple steps (requireing an unlocked iPhone) are...
    1. Insert original SIM card (all should be fine)
    2. Remove orginal SIM card and replace with second carrier SIM
    3. Sync with iTunes to get the phone working again.
    4. Either turn on Airplane Mode or turn the phone off and on again.
    5. The phone (at least mine) will require you to connect to iTunes again.
Turning on Airplane Mode or turning the phone off and on with the original SIM card inserted doesn't lead to this behaviour.

  • How do I make sure the unlocked iPhone 5s I buy on the Apple Store will be compatible with my carrier?

Hi, I'm looking to buy an unlocked iPhone 5s on Apple Store Canada - but my phone carrier, Wind Mobile, has a different frequency. I know this carrier isn't compatible with the iPhones 4s and earlier, but it was working on some versions of the 5. If I buy one here, will it work?

Ask the carrier if they support the iPhone and if it will work.

Hi, i am going to buy and iPhone 5 in france but it says its an unlocked iphone so i guess if i take it to Ecuador (my country) the iPhone is gonna work with a sim card from Ecuador right¿

If the receipt says "unlocked" (and not "SIM free") then it will work anywhere in the world that there is a GSM network. However, if it ever needs repair you will have to take it back to France.
