Unnecessarily difficult

Why is iTunes written in such a counter intuitive, complicated manner Compared to Real Player or Windows Media Player it is far more difficult to use and the commands do not even funtion in many cases. For instance, the instructions for transferring music from iPod Shuffle to another authorized computer are incorrect. Each time the iPod is plugged into a different computer the only option is to overwrite the files on the iPod despite the authorizations.
Will any software fixes or upgrades for iTunes be available soon? If not, I'm going to sell my shuffle and get a Napster compatible MP3 player.

  • Importing selection of images is unnecessarily difficult?

I've been trying to figure out how to import a selection of images from a card and, so far, it's got me beat. I can see how to select the files (draw a box, command+click, etc) but I can't figure out how to check them. I see the "check all" and "uncheck all" option, but I don't see an option to 'check selected" (or something similar) anywhere. I'm gonna be decidedly unhappy if I'm expected to check the actual check box manually with approx 350 files to select out of 600 or so. Am I just completely over looking how to quickly select these files?
EDIT: OK, I figured out that I could check one of the boxes and all the other boxes for selected files would check themselves. Sorry, but that was NOT intuitive.

I'm afraid that in a program with as many features as Aperture 3 you will find many things that aren't intuitive for you. That's why there are manuals, help files and keyboard shortcuts cards.
Certainly a fair criticism, but in a program as robust as Aperture 3, a fairly "normal" objective should either be intuitive or should have a clear "click me" type of option. This particular action has no keyboard shortcut (that I could find) and here is entry from the help manual (online) on "selecting a subset of files":
+"To import a subset of files from the selected folder: Select the checkboxes for the files you want to import. If you only want to import a small number of files out of many, click the Uncheck All button to clear the checkboxes for all files, and then select the checkboxes for the files you want to import."+
That is clearly an instruction to click each individual box and makes no mention of drawing a box around certain files (or command/shift-clicking certain files) and then checking one box. It does not mention the solution laid out above. Whether this particular approach is detailed later is something I do not yet know. Since this particular action is not apparent in the help, the new user is expected to somehow intuit this particular step and, from my perspective, it is most certainly NOT intuitive. I think a "Check Selected" option would have been a definite improvement.
Yes, I know Aperture 3 will confuse me at certain points, but something as critical as importing should be a little less opaque to the new user...

  • Can't use iPhoto/updating thumbnails/original can't be found

I haven't used iPhoto in a long time, and have rarely ever used it, have always found it counterintuitive and unnecessarily difficult.  The last time i used it was probably in the past 6 months and it worked OK.  Today i'm having a new problem that i can't fix, hoping someone more knowledgeable can help me.
I opened iPhoto because i was going to try using iCloud for storing photos. The "beta" iCloud Photos opened and said that i would have to turn on Photo Library on my iPhone. I looked at that and it said "automatically upload and store your entire photo library in iCloud to access photos and videos from all your devices."
I'm not sure i want to do that, i don't want all my storage used up.  I googled "Can i store selected photos on iCloud photos," to see if i can choose which photos in my photo library i want to put on the cloud.  I got a link to an Apple Support page which was titled My Photo Stream FAQ.  I was reading the beginning of it and it said i needed to have iPhoto v.9.2 or greater.  So, i clicked on the iPhoto icon in the doc to open it and see the version number that way.
That was the beginning of the trouble.
I can't remember the whole sequence of what happened, but at the beginning, i got a message window telling me that there were problems with my data directory, it didn't use those terms but something about inconsistencies between different things which it said  could cause problems, and one of the options was a button that said Repair.  So i clicked on Repair.
Then i got a small window with a progress bar that said Updating Thumbnails.  Pretty soon after that, i got another window, a message window that said something like "Alert  -  The photo “IMG_9673.JPG” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."  The two options were Cancel or Find Photo.  I clicked on Find Photo, a window opened with a field to type the name of the photo but iPhoto had taken the window away that had the file name, so i had to close out and wait for the window to come back. Then i memorized the obscure file name and put it in the search field after clicking Find Photo. Nothing happened. Nothing was found or not found, there was no response and no button to click on.  there was no way to use that window to search with.  There was a grayed out "open" button.  What a waste of time.  This is why i don't use iPhoto.
So, then i used the Finder Find file window and typed in IMG_  because there were a lot of them, not just a few, so i wanted to find out where they all were and maybe i could just delete them. Find file showed that a lot of them were in Mail, apparently mail attachments, and there was a total of over 4700 of them.  So, there was no way i was going to be able to click Cancel 4700+ times, this was a very slow process, each time, there was an extended pause until the next window with 'cancel' came up, and of course, it would be too easy to have an option to apply the choice to all.  That didn't exist. I couldn't do anything functional with iPhoto, everything was grayed out, including Quit. I used force quit.
i tried restarting iPhoto, the same thing happens, i got the same 'updating thumbnails' and 'Alert - original cannot be found'.  One time, i got the original  "you have inconsistencies" message and the options to repair or or cancel, and i chose cancel this time, but it still brought up the Updating Thumbnails/Alert - can't be found' windows.
    Each time, i force quit.
Is there anything i can do?  i don't want to reinstall the whole system.  Is there something somewhere i can throw in the trash?  I do not want to have to reinstall the system software for a program i rarely if ever use because i find it so difficult.

Terence--thank you for the reply.  To my knowledge i haven't ever done anything with iPhoto preferences to change it from the default. i have very rarely used iPhoto because i have found the interface difficult and awkward.  Because i use it so little, i would've had no reason to change the preferences that i can remember. i certainly would not have known anything about the options you describe and would not have selected a Referenced Library because i don't know where else i would put the photos. I have been managing my photos on the iPhone for the past 5 or 6 years, and before that, i used a Canon photo management program. i mostly store my photos on the phone but i email photos to my computer in order to post them on facebook etc, before that became easier to do from the phone . i would edit photos in Preview or on the phone. I have barely used iPhoto. i think occasionally, i sync the phone photos with the computer as a back up.  That would account for there being a lot of photos in the iPhoto Library, maybe.  As far as i know, i have the default settings on iPhoto.
I used iPhoto a couple of times in the past year, to find some old photos, and the program opened normally.  Today, it did not open normally but gave me the message about having some inconsistencies and asking if i wanted to repair them, which then led to the Updating Thumbnails window, which then led to the Alert - The photo could not be opened because the original could not be found message window.  Nothing else opens.  There is no functional  iPhoto at this point. I can either open it and look at a screen with those messages on it, or i can force quit it.  I can't check the preferences settings, not from within the program.
I searched for the IMG_ files and found about 3000 of them and put them in a photo on my desk top.  Does that mean they are in a Referenced Library?
Do you know of any way of getting this 'updating thumbnails' process to stop?
There was a time when dragging a plist file to the desk top or the trash could help to fix problems, and i was hoping there would be something like that  i could do. i don't know what changed since the last time i opened iPhoto that has caused this problem that i have not had before.  Maybe it was after the change from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  I can't remember.

  • I just downloaded iOS 6 on my iPhone 4 and now can no longer open internet links that were texted to me.  Anyone else having the same problem?

I just downloaded iOS 6 on my iPhone 4 and now can no longer open internet links that were texted to me.  Anyone else having the same problem or know how to fix this?

The SMS links thing is highly annoying. You don't have to copy/paste however. You should see an icon like this: (>) to the right of the text bubble with the link. Tap on that, the in the screen that opens, tap "Visit".
Alternatively, you can tap twice directly on the link, then hold your finger down after the second tap.
Still unnecessarily difficult, but not as bad as copy/paste.
What I don't get is why can't I find any mention of this change or how to fix it (if even possible) elsewhere online?

  • Adobe Air 3 conflict with 10.7.2

I cannot open YNAB and after several tries I get a msg to install the latest Adobe Air. I tried installing it (which is Adobe Air 3) and nothing happens....
    Any advice?

I can't speak to the specific problem with YNAB, but since upgrading my MacBook Pro (2010) to 10.7.2, I too have had problems with installing Adobe AIR 3. If you have a MacBook Pro or other Mac with automatic graphics switching, disabling this in System Prefs -> Energy Saver seems to allow Adobe AIR 3 to install. (I too found this tip on the Adobe forums, and I have confirmed that it works.)
Why this should upset AIR is anyone's guess. But then, Adobe creates nasty bits of software that seem to be completely unable to play nicely; they aren't content to use the standard Mac OS X Installer, they dump files and folders in inappropriate places, they have un-Mac-like UIs which make them unnecessarily difficult to start using, and they cause all sorts of system problems. On one occasion I installed Reader in OS X 10.5 because of a PDF with interactive forms. I spent the whole afternoon restoring my Mac from a TM backup as a result of the constant kernel panics which ensued. I almost wish Adobe didn't make software for the Mac.

  • PSE 8 - Coverting My Catalog from Photoshop Album 2.0

My free download PSE 8 begings the conversion of My Catalog (Photoshop Album 2.0) when only 6% of the way into the process it stops giving an error message; "Failed. Try repairing the catalog with the software that created it". Frankly I am not sure where to begin.
My entire catalog, only one by the way, was created with the Photoshop Album 2.0 application. In an attempt to identify what was in need of repair using the slideshow View over all of the photos in my catalog I did identify where some images' were not linked to the actual photo. Any such disconnect I have rectified and am able to view the entire slideshow without interruption suggesting that there is nothing to repair?
Our use of Photoshop Album 2.0 has been unsophisticated. We download our photos from camera/s mainly using the Photoshop application which automatically stores them in the Adobe sub-folder under My Pictures. We then move these into appropriately named separate folders and mapping them onto similarly named Collections within My Catalog. Here we edit and delete where necessary and also caption. Once that exercise is complete, to reduce storage, we go back to My Pictures and remove any duplication resulting from the editing process. As a final test we take a slideshow View of each collection to insure that there are no disconnect.
What can I try next? Is there any diagnostic tool within Elements 8 which can assist in identifying where we need to start with the repair job?

    Hi John
Despite successfully running Reconnect and Repair, PSE 8 is still unable to
convert My Catalog from Photoshop Album 2.0. The 'Problems converting
catalogs to PSE 6 or 7' notes suggests that I might need to first migrate to
Elements 5. Can I take you up on the offer find me a copy?
Actually John I may be making life unnecessarily difficult for myself. I
would like to upgrade my Adobe Photoshop software but have some thousands of
photos with captions. Is there a more simple way to migrate photos, edited
photos all with captions into PSE 8?
    Regards
    Neil

  • How to share to Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc. from an iBook

I'm having a very hard time creating a page at the end of my book where readers can share a quick blurb and my web site on various social media like Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.
My first approach was trying the same version of the Tweet button, the Like button, and the +1 button that you would add to a web site. These *don't* work out of the box because an iBooks HTML widget will not load external JavaScript or anything in an iframe. Has this been everyone else's experience? Am I doing something wrong?
Then, I made a widget that submitted predefined text and URLs to Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ through query parameters (which most of the share buttons do themselves behind the scenes). However, the implementation works but with severe drawbacks. You can log in to Twitter and tweet something but then you can't share on Facebook or Google+ due to the way iBooks HTML widgets handle URLs. Instead of opening URLs in Mobile Safari, like a plain iBooks Author link somewhere in the book text, the widget opens it's own browser window without any UI, location bar, history, or anything. Worse yet, there doesn't seem to be any way to navigate back or reset the widget to the original URL (main.html in Dashcode terms). This means whatever page you end up at after sharing something to say, Twitter, is the page the widget will always open from now on. To refresh the widget and share via another social service, you have to force quit and reopen the iBooks app.
You can see my code and try it out here: https://github.com/avk/iBooks-Social-Widget
The most important files are main.html and js/script.js
The widget.openURL(...) method, which can open links in Safari from a Dashboard widget, doesn't seem to be supported in iBooks HTML widgets.
All this seems wrong and unnecessarily difficult. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Unless both ipads were set up with the same Apple ID, there really isn't.
This does depend on the app however. I don't read iBooks, but there are some e-reader apps like Kindle that may allow you to 'loan' the book to someone else. Or, using an e-reader app, the book can be 'checked out' of a library that supports downloaded books. You have an account, 'borrow' the file, use an e-reader app to read it, and have a certain time frame in which to finish reading.

  • Why can charging our devices get so complicated?

For some people, depending on their charging needs, usually based on the number of devices they need to charge can get very confusing. Here are some scenarios. After which if there is any one that can provide some insight in how to charge devices using non-apple chargers and cables, PLEASE shed some light on us less than technical folk.
It all started with the 3' only Apple cord. Sorry, it's simply too short. Yes I can use an extension cord, but not always. in the house. OK. but what about if you travel? Fly a lot, etc. I don't want to be carrying an extension cord or worse a power strip to plug in 2 or more devices. Then came the Made in China 6' and 10' cords. Still nothing from Apple. As anyone who's tried these, they often last a week or bring up the dreaded error (paraphrasing) "this not supported and may not function properly"
Some time later better reliable cords appeared on market from folks like Belkin and Griffin, that didn't' seem to conjure these errors. Some disagree though.
But what about double chargers? Still nothing from Apple. To fill this vacuum a host of double USB cigarette and wall wart chargers arrived which complicated the problem because now it was sometimes the combination of which 3rd party charger and cord combo that was the issue. Example: the OEM cord works fine in the 2 or 4 USB wall charger, but add a 3rd party cord and it would bring up the error warning. Take the same 3rd party cord and plug it into your OEM Apple charger and all was well. Clearly the combo was the problem.
I found that if you squeeze the end of the USB so it dipped a fraction to make the connection into the charger tighter, this would stop charging issues. Trial and error Voodoo at best.
This isn't meant to be a finger point at Apple, although it is very surprising that longer cords and multi-chargers for car and wall were never developed and Apple knows there are tons of garbage that not only don't charge reliably, consistently (some days they work, others for no reason don't), at all, or may even damage your device. BTW, Apple did finally make a 6' cord. Pricey, but available. Thankfully. Still no 10' or multi-port USB chargers though. And who doesn't need a 2-port charger in the car for you and your passenger(s) on long trips?
Why is charging such a mystery and why aren't their at least Apple blessed products we can depend on?
Regardless, Apple hasn't so if you need longer cables and multi-chargers you are left to fend for yourself and use trial and error purchases, returns until you find something that works. Why on earth after spending as much as we do for very sophisticated and beloved iDevices are we running around from vendor to vendor trying to find a reliable safe charging system. When I recently discovered that it could be the cord, charger or combination, that's when I realized just how unnecessarily difficult this was.
Enter products like Mophie charging cases for iPhone which use a regular USB and mini USB male jack and their 3rd party longer cables and the problem carries over to these products too. I have a Mophie because I'm in the field all day and need extra battery time. It's a God send.
Recently I had to put an inverter into my cigarette lighter, then an Anker 4 USB port 100v charger to get enough power to get a totally drained co-worker's iPhone working. The battery was too low for my Scosche dual USB cigarette charger to bring it to life. 150 watt / Anker to the rescue. That was my most out of the box solution yet.
I installed a number of RCA chargers that go over your 110v dual wall sockets and provide you with 4 110v outlets and 2 USB, 2.1s and yesterday found my IXCC 10' USB/8-pin, which has been totally reliable in my Belkin similar wall set up now got the alert warning and my Mophie USB/USB doesn't provide power at all! If I plug the USB/USB into either my OEM iPad, iPhone or Anker USB 4 port, all's well. Being the weekend and frustrated prompted this post plus I know in my office alone so many are befuddled and if a good sample, many Apple users have to be too.
Why the garbage products are allowed on the market, or why the Amazons of the world who take them back regularly keep offering the substandard ones is a mystery to me. I've returned at least 6-8 items between cords and chargers.
Lastly there is the possible truth or folk lore that Apple has a proprietary chip in their cords which is the cause of the alert errors on non-Apple cords. But then why do some work? And some work plugged into some non-Apple multi-chargers and some are fine with some chargers and not with others. Ugh.
Does any one know why some cords simply don't work or work well? Is the wire inside too thin? Is QA so poor that the wires inside don't always get connected to the USB and 8-pin or micro USB jack lugs inside?
And what about the chargers? Not to mention some being 2.1 and some 1.5 boasting that using 2.1 on our iPhones that come with 1.5 chargers will charge up faster. But at what cost I wonder.
Lastly, for the Techies out there, I saw in Home Depot the other day you can now buy installable 110v outlets with 2 (or more) USB jacks to replace your standard 2 outlet 110v wall sockets. Clearly USB has landed. Even power strips have USBs now.
But how do we choose? How to we stop wasting money buying ones that don't work, and are our Apple devices safe using anything other than Apple charging parts. If so, why doesn't Apple make a dual USB cigarette charger and 2, 4 or more wall charger since so many of us have 2 devices or more, or have families all with Apple products and great need for simple reliable safe charging. Especially since we can't live without our iPhones and iPads anymore.
I wonder if there is a summary sheet online that lists what works and what to stay away from. Still confused why Apple hasn't put an end to this madness.

What prevents you from using an extension cord? And yes, I always take one with me when traveling as hotels (and guest rooms) rarely have enough outlets. I also generally carry this:

I've never found charing any of my iOS devices complicated. I plug them in. They charge. I rarely use anything but genuine Apple cables and chargers (except for the Belkin car charger). I generally use iPad chargers as they can charge both iPhone and iPads. When I'm using a mophie case, I generally use the mophie desktop charger (fantastic!) or, whatever random microUSB cable and chargers are lying around. I can't say I've ever had any problems. It also doesn't feel very "mysterious" to me. I'd say my advice boils down to one thing "Don't buy cheap chargers."

  • Save file to excel format

-the 3... version of SQL developer has one very important function (from my point of wiev) done unnecessarily difficult.
    - in earlier versions (2...) was simply “export data, -> xls- “ and the out coming file was ..in any editable form of Excel – format
    - I (personally) moved back using TOAD – main reason was because that sort of unnecessary inconvenience of transferring data to the format my clients wants -- it is boring
    Eero M

I see your point, but I applaud the new Excel output options. I use this feature constantly, and the couple of extra default values and clinks are worth it. Options:
*Maybe just add a "finish" button to the Wizard so that it skips the next "tab" in it (basically defaults to the old Excel export technique). Even with the new features, I think that it is literally just one extra click compared to prior versions.
*Fix the issue where there is an empty column appended to the right of the data (this has been there in all versions to date). To see it, unload to Excel. Open the file in Excel and hit ctrl-end.
*Allow the system to use an Excel "template" so that it uses default fonts, colors, etc. Within the "template", allow you to pick the worksheet and cell that the output goes to (e.g. Summary!A4).
*Fix the date issues, so that when it is exported to Excel, Excel treats dates as real dates not strings
*Support the newer Excel 2007 file format (this has been around for 3 years now)
*Make the SQL easier to read (great feature, difficult to read it). We use SQL Developer to handle a lot of ad hoc queries, and it is convenient to have the SQL worksheet since it saves documenting and debugging time dramatically. The SQL output that is shown on the "Unload Summary" looks right, but when it gets exported, the carriage returns don't display nicely.
All of the above have been entered into the "Exchange" before. Obviously, we can't expect everything to be done by Oracle, but it is great to see them adding capability to this area of the tool. I'd probably try making an extension, but I don't know Java.

  • Preview - PDF - Encrypt - Add password

I am trying to be a loyal Mac user and rely on Preview for management of my secure PDF files.
(I have used Adobe Acrobat Professional -AAP- for several years; I am trying to avoid installing it on my clean SL installation.)
1.) How do I use Preview to open a PDF file created, encrypted, and password protected in AAP? (I get an error: The file “Secure.pdf” could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."
2.) Can someone give me simple step by step instructions to add Automator functions to Preview to allow me to encrypt and password protect individual files on a file by file basis?
All of this is very simple in AAP. Seems unnecessarily difficult in SL...
    Help?

    Well, Dr. Midnight,
There IS an answer. The "Password Protect PDF" file is a function in Automator that comes up as a Service in Preview.
For me the problem is that Automator is not very intuitive and I am too old and too lazy to learn a new programming language just to replace/repair functionality that I had with Acrobat Professional in Leopard that got broken in Snow Leopard.
Ok, - in truth - not broken, but moved and changed and made less easy to use. Preview becomes the default PDF handler in Snow Leopard. I though - ok - if Preview will do what Acrobat Professional used to do for me, I'll be a good little loyal Apple user and move from Acrobat Professional to Preview (and stop paying for Acrobat upgrades).
Then I figured out it is a PITA to learn Automator and I learned that no one on this forum seems to know (or be willing to share) simple steps to enable one Automator Service.
So I reinstalled Acrobat since I already own two licenses and since it does what I want simply and intuitively.
By the way, thanks for checking in. Nice to know I am not all alone out here ....

  • With a high volume of tabs, scrolling to the end of the tab list often resets to the first tab

    Firefox 34.0.5
When using a large number of tabs, around 300 inactive and 30 active tabs, when the currently selected tab is a tab on the far left side of the tab bar, attempting to scroll to the end (far right) side of the tab bar will often cause scrolling to freeze momentarily, and then reset to far left, to the currently selected tab, and continues scrolling from the beginning of the tab bar, making it unnecessarily difficult to scroll to the end of a long tabs bar.
This occurs when scrolling up/down with the scroll-wheel on a mouse, when scrolling up/down/left/right on a touchpad, and when scrolling using the left and right scroll buttons in the tab bar.

  • Word compatibility Updates

I absolutely LOVE the iPad and Pages.
When transferring Word documents to the iPad / Pages there are some frustrating incompatibilities that I hope will be corrected soon.
    1) Unrecognized TimesNewRoman font is replaced with TimesNewRomanXXXX (with a unique suffix). OK but what is the purpose because no Mac or PC has the unique iPad font with suffix abbreviation.
    2) Colored text is converted to black -- so valuable highlights or other special markings you depend on disappear
    3) Color highlighting is removed -- again this makes it unnecessarily difficult to use the iPad version to focus on things that need to be adjusted or changed in the document.
    4) Table of Contents is distorted -- the right justification of page numbers is converted to a fixed number of hyphens which defeats the purpose of making the Table of Contents easy to read. This should be a fairly easy thing to fix.
I am offering these observations to encourage the next round of improvements -- NOT start a flame war or offend anyone. As I said ... I love the iPad and Pages ... just would like it to be as good as it can be for fairly simple things.

Make sure you repeat your post in the channel where Apple goes to find this kind of comments:

  • Lyrics input glitch when melody crosses middle C

I'm adding lyrics to a score. Everything is cool if all the melody notes are on a single staff. However, if the region has two staves (e.g. bass clef & treble clef) and the melody crosses middle C (i.e. changes staff), the lyrics input won't recognize the notes on the other staff. That is, if I put the lyric object below the bass clef staff, and the next note in the melody is above middle C (up on the treble clef staff), when I hit Tab to input the next syllable, the cursor skips all the melody notes on the treble clef and goes straight to the next note that's back on the bass clef. If I put the lyric object between the two staves, Tab skips over any notes on the bass clef staff. I could just use one staff, but the melody is pretty much centered around middle C so if I do that, about half the notes will either be above or below the staff (depending on which clef I use) which makes it unnecessarily difficult for the singer to read. Any ideas? TIA.

I am not sure what the answer is but, two things occur to me:
    • perhaps the Lyric Input tool is following a particular voice which is assigned to a particular midi channel. How many channels are assigned in Score Styles? What kind of Score Style are you using?
    • Also try letting the Lyrics just be where they are ( ie up or down) until you have finished putting them all in, then select the ones which are 'wrong' by Shift Clicking and move them all in one go with the Vertical and Horizontal positioning box in the Score Editor inspector
    ..just a guess

  • Chinese character issues in v 9.0

I need some help please. I am using AI 9.0 and Photoshop 5.5 (yes, it's ancient, it still does the job) on a Windows based system.
I need to do some design work in AI using Chinese Traditional fonts. The font I want is SimSun, and it does show up in the font list in AI. I can see, copy and paste the fonts in every program I've got - except my Adobe products, where - naturally - I need it. I'm not typing this up myself, I'm just trying to copy a pre-existing document (the text) into an AI design, and the document has the SimSun font.
I read somewhere else that I should be able to copy the text from Word into Photoshop and from there into AI, but #1 this doesn't work, and #2 that seems unnecessarily difficult.
I'd really appreciate someone steering me in the right direction here - I'm not sure what I haven't tried yet, and I'm getting frustrated.

For many years, Illustrator lagged behind other Adobe applications -- yes, even Photoshop -- in Unicode and IME support. I'd say AI Unicode support wasn't really there until version 12 (CS2).
The set-type-via-Photoshop workaround is well known among CJK users. I stumbled on it myself a long time ago and have used it successfully many times, although I cannot begin to tell you why it works. At this point, though, I just don't know which versions of Illustrator and Photoshop can be used to pull it off.
The oldest version of Photoshop I have on a system of mine is 7, and I have AI versions 8, 10, and 12 on the same system. The workaround (pasting CJK type into PS 7, then re-copying and pasting into AI) is a no-go for AI 8, A-OK for AI 10, and unnecessary for AI 12. As you can see, your versions just might be too old.
I didn't have SimSun, but I did try a few of my CJK Unicode fonts with identical results.
You might try a different font. You might also try workaround #2, wherein you substitute InDesign for Photoshop in the process.
In the end, you might just have to admit "ancient but does the job" no longer cuts it for you.
