Unresponsive input devices after full system update

This problem's been going on for a couple of months now. Essentially what happens is that when I perform a normal system update using
sudo pacman -Syu
and reboot the computer, it will go through the normal booting process (Everything marked as OK), but when the display manager starts, the resolution is significantly lower (probably 800x600 rather than 1366x768). Another symptom is that the neither the keyboard nor the mouse register any input on the screen. (Pressing the 'lock' keys don't trigger the LED on the keyboard, and the mouse doesn't move on the screen).
The only way I've been able to remedy this situation is that everytime I perform a system update, I have to load up the Arch boot CD, and pacstrap the root installing.
I"m not entirely sure which information one would need to diagnose this problem, but I'll include the output from the system update, and the pactrap update;

That was the most recent occurrence, but like I said, it's been occurring for months. I figure it's probably some crazy setting I have in my system. I'll post my mkinitcpio.conf just as a preemptive measure.
# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
MODULES=""
# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=""
# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=""
# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS="base"
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS="base udev autodetect block filesystems"
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS="base udev block filesystems"
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS="base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems"
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
# HOOKS="base udev block lvm2 filesystems"
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block lvm2 filesystems keyboard fsck"
# COMPRESSION
# Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, gzip compression
# is used. Use 'cat' to create an uncompressed image.

Can we take a peek at your /etc/fstab ?
I think you've the problem I had suspected was going on in that other thread.  I think your boot partition is not mounted on /boot at the time you do the upgrade.  This will cause the new modules to be installed in the libraries.  The new kernel and initrd will be built, and installed to the /boot mount point.  Unfortunately, if the boot partition is not mounted, the files don't replace the old ones and the boot loader uses the stale files the next time you boot.  The old kernel cannot find its modules, because the only ones available belong to the new kernel (you know, the one that was written to what /boot)
If you can use the keyboard after an upgrade, log in and compare the output of uname -a and of pacman -Qi linux.  The versions had better match.
Yes, it seems as if you were right. I must have missed that in the thread you posted. My /etc/fstab does not have the boot partition in it, just the root and home (I'm using lvm for both of them)
# /etc/fstab: static file system information

  • After full system update ppp does not work anymore

    Well, I have this problem:
    1) I install Arch Linux from the latest Core
    2) I manually install the latest versions of wvdial and its dependences (xplc and wvstreams). This is an offline installation (because I can't set up internet without wvdial. So I save these packages on USB drive, and there I lanch pacman -U *.pkg.tar.gz)
    3) I set up my GPRS internet connection (I use a mobile phone)
Everything works well (i.e.: I can ping google without problem).
Problems arise if I decide to update my system. In this case, indeed, after updating and rebooting, my connection doesn't work no more. Everything works fine until I update. After update, I can say hello to my ppp.
Then, I add some some details.
These are the last lines of messages.log after a successful connection (i.e.: before the full update of my system)

As you can see, it's seems there are problems in "using ppp0 interface". Indeed, pppd starts, but ppp0 interface not. I can also add that ifconfig ppp0 up and similar commands do not work (ppp0: no such device, or something like that).
    So, what can I do?

I don't use ppp so this is just a guess.  However, after a recent upgrade I saw a message from pacman:

  • [SOLVED] Problems after full system update

Hi, today i've issued pacman -Syu and after reboot, my X refuses to start (says it has no device) and also i have no network interfaces, just loopback. Everything worked well before update. Any ideas?

    You could have run
    lsinitcpio -a /boot/initramfs-linux.img
on the old image to see what modules did it include.
Re-running mkinitcpio probably generated a correct image so it's working now.

  • System time wrongly set to UTC after full system update

After updating my arch linux box with pacman -Syu the time is wrongly set to UTC time.
I use only arch linux on all of my computers.
The time in the BIOS is set to UTC and is correct.
    In my /etc/rc.conf I have
    HARDWARECLOCK="UTC"
    TIMEZONE=Europe/Athens
Does anyone have the same problem? Did anyone find a fix?
    P.S I don't want to set the HARDWARECLOCK="localtime"

I believe that the problem lies in hwclock command or the kernel.
when I issue the command hwclock --utc --hctosys
the time stays the same (UTC timezone) while it should change to my timezone (Europe/Athens). I tried it with other timezones as well but the result is the same.
Anyone experiencing the same problem ?

  • Full system update lead to unresponsive terminal

    Hi, all.
I performed a full system update with pacman -Syyu on my machine. This machine has not been fully updated for some time, though I updated some packages occasionally. The only warning message I noticed is that "/bin/mountpoint" existed already, and the system didn't allow the update. I remembered I also ran into similar issues before (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=132225), so I adopted the same approach and added  the --force option.  The updating process was quite smooth.
However, after reboot, the system is unresponsive. I could see the login prompt, but the system didn't accept any input from the keyboard, and I could do nothing. The booting message showed the filesystem (RAID1 with LVM) were mounted, but /dev/pts and /dev/shm couldn't be mounted. And it seemed that many binaries in /sbin and /bin couldn't be found. (I think it is due to the merge of /sbin and /bin to /usr/bin.)
I understand you might need more information to offer advise, but the system is effectively frozen, I need to have a responsive shell to provide more information. So this is basically a dead loop now ... Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

First question: did you force just the util-linux package, or did you actually do `pacman -Syyu --force`.
I think the former would have been a mistake, but the latter would be a major f&*^ up.  It might be useful to know just how wrong this could have gone.

At some point in the past, I synched with Gmail.  Looking at my Gmail contacts, I can see that it's missing the same contacts I'm currently missing from the iPhone.  Is it possible that I may have done that sync back in October 2009 (but not since) and then somehow recently over-wrote my contacts content with whatever was there?  Is there some setting I could have tripped to make something like that happen?

any body an idea what i can do to fix it?

hi - i think you should not use 'xhost +' - it's not secure and you shouldn't need it....
in your .bashrc or .cshrc or whatever, you should have setenv DISPLAY .0 or the equivalent export...
then ssh -Y hostname should be all you need... no xhost, and not setting DISPLAY every time...
could you enter the following command from a terminal window and post back the results?
    grep X11 /etc/ssh*_config

  • Satellite C655-S5044 won't recognize TSST CDDVDW TS-L633C ATA device after windows 7 update

    Laptop: Toshiba Satellite C655-S5044; Windows 7 64-bit
DVD Drive - TSST CDDVDW TS-L633C ATA Device
After an automatic Windows update, the CD/DVD drive is no longer recognized.
Running troubleshoot on the PC yields:
Problem detected with TSST CDDVDW TS-L633C ATA Device Driver has been disabled
Checking for new drivers says I have the latest.
I tried running a microsoft fixit for DVD/CD drives - no problem found
I tried deinstalling the driver, then rebooting.  This yields a message:
Device Driver was not successfully installed please consult with your device manufacturer.
I tried the TSST website for Toshiba and that rerouted me here.
Searching the forums I have seen similar issues with other hardware/OS combinations but not exactly the same.
Additional Info from the device manager:
    Device Type:  DVD/CD-ROM Drive
    Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives)
    Location:  Location 0 (Channel 1, target 0, Lun 0)
I suspect that I have multiple device drivers on the computer for this device and the OS is installing one that doesn't work.
How can I get the correct current driver and install it?
Does anyone recognize this problem and have a fix?
    Thanks.

    Satellite C655-S5044
I didn't find that model anywhere.
Device Driver was not successfully installed please consult with your device manufacturer.
The driver is native to Windows. Sounds to me like a hardware malfunction.
    After an automatic Windows update,..
In a Microsoft forum, they would tell you to do a System Restore to before the Windows Update. If that fixed the problem, then apply the updates one at a time to identify the culprit.

  • [SOLVED] Inkscape bug after last system update

After the last system update I started to have problems in Inkscape when I tried to adjust the color and alpha sliders to maximum values. They would only go up to 245. This means that a lot of basic colors are not achievable anymore, and the opacity cannot be set to maximum, which basically makes Inkscape unusable. After googling it for a while, I understood that there was a similar problem some time ago with Inkscape version 0.46-7 and GTK+ (here is a far better description of the bug, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=467431), but this problem was assumably fixed in a later version (for the Red Hat package anyway). I am using at the moment Inkscape 0.46-10 and GTK2. Anyone with similar problems? Please help and thank you very much!

under the fill and stroke dialogue (ctrl-f), there is a small input box called RGBA which is just that, 1 byte for each channel. edit it at will. you will notice the sliders dont go past 245, but the value used by inkscape is the hex number there

  • Large Backup After Last System Update

There have been a lot of problems after 10.6.5 update, and this is another one. TM backup went from 120 GB to 240 GB after the system upgrade. I had to stop it manually, so I don't know if it would have continued in an infinite look until the disk was full as has happened to me before.
Does anybody know the cause of TM filling the backup disk?
When I enter TM there are only a couple of increments available.
I suppose I need to delete the whole archive and start again.
Does anybody know a way I can save my incremental backups?

A quick look at some of your recent posts indicates you may have done a full restore. That results in a full backup. See #D3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    If not, see #D4 there.
When I enter TM there are only a couple of increments available.
Most likely, it deleted many old backups to make room for the new one.
I suppose I need to delete the whole archive and start again.
You can, of course, but if it had started backing-up, it had made enough space.
Does anybody know a way I can save my incremental backups?
The ones already deleted are gone for good.
The remaining ones probably won't be deleted when you do the next backup, but a few might. If not, they'll likely be deleted before long.
You may want to consider getting a larger backup drive, at least 3 times the size of the data on your system.

  • My playbook wont show any wifi after a system update

I did a system  update, afterward it didn't connect to any wifi network.  I did a reset but still saying connect to wi-fi select a network and no network shows up.  any suggestion?

if you want to reset to factory then follow this.
First I would like you to do a Back Up of your PlayBook using your computer and BlackBerry Desktop Software.
This can be downloaded for free from http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/
After the Back Up is complete I need you to unplug your PlayBook and then push and hold down the Power Button until the unit Force Powers Off.
Now, while Desktop Software is still open on your computer and the PlayBook Powered Off, Connect the PlayBook to your computer.
You should see and error screen from Desktop Software pop up that has the options to Retry, Update, or Cancel.
    QUICKLY choose the Update option.
This will erase all the information off of your PlayBook and Re-Write the Software back onto it. Once it's complete your PlayBook will need to go back through the setup wizard, and you can then perform a restore using Desktop Software to return your information. The only thing that won't come back after the restore are the apps that you downloaded from App World but they can be easily Re-Installed using the My World feature in App World.

  • IMac doesn't recognize input devices after going to asleep, must reboot

Quite often, my iMac doesn't respond when I attempt to "wake" it using keyboard or mouse. The only way to wake the iMac is to tap the power button. However, when it wakes the mouse cursor is a spinning color wheel and the system does not recognize any input from the keyboard or mouse. I can leave it sitting for quite some time and it still will not recognize my input devices. When this happens I must hold the power button to reboot.
This has been happening for a quite a while now, and it is highly annoying. I can't remember if this was happening before my screen was replaced by Apple a few months ago. It definitely did not happen before upgrading to Lion.
I am hoping you guys can help, otherwise I suppose I will be calling Apple and see if they can figure it out. I am tired of this!
    Thanks,
    Robyn

I'm having a similar issue. I put my screen to sleep before I go to bed, next day, the computer is frozen, but still on since I can detect heat from the top vent.
I've checked memory for any errors (5 hours of testing) and removed any system extensions. Still gets frozen.
I did attach an old USB mouse just to wake it up when it loses connection to the wirless bluetooth devices. I've been able to wake it up from this condition a few times.
I will keep investigating. My iMac is 1 month old, 27" i5 quad core.

  • My macbook pro always runs 30°c cooler immediately after a system update

For the two days following any system update my macbook runs about 30°c cooler than normal  (45-50°c), then after a couple of days it returns to its usual  operating temperature of 75-80°c. This has happened probably since leopard and happens exactly the same with every system update.
    What is going on?
Does this happen to anyone else?
