Unresponsive Solaris 10 Guest on Oracle VM

Hi there
I've got an Oracle VM 2.2.1 installation on an X4150 which has a few guests: RHEL5.6, Windows and Solaris 10.
Both RHEL and Windows are performing really smoothly and as expected, however the Solaris guest starts fast but becomes unresponsive within a few minutes of booting.
Unresponsive in that although there are no userland processes running, the guest becomes really claggy.
For example, running top freezes every few seconds for a few seconds, and the same with ssh connections into the server. Basically, every so many words that you type, a pause will be introduced, rendering the whole VM unresponsive.
When running top, this unusual behaviour shows itself in occasional bursts in kernel activity. Although the load average and CPU utilisation is low, the kernel activity will spike to 100% every few seconds. I can't find any messages in the /var/adm/messages file that could explain this other than some weird messages at boot about the system date:

Other unusual symptoms include the top utility not loading for seconds or minutes (it fluctuates) when you initially try and run it.
What's more strange is the fact that the system starts-out as being fast and responsive for the first few minutes after boot, but quickly slows down like this.
I don't think there are any network issues, as other VMs on the same Oracle VM server run well, and even pings to the Solaris guest appear fine. Its literally like the system itself is being paused when these random delays occur. The routing on the system also appears to be normal.
Solaris release installed is Solaris 09/10 and I've just installed the May 2011 Recommended Patch Cluster on it, to bring the kernel to 144489-12.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

The solution turned-out to be a known bug with OVM and Solaris 10 guests. We had to pin down the VCPUs to physical CPUs to workaround this.

  • Solaris 10 Guest OS in VirtualBox: X-server fails to start

I couldn't find a VirtualBox users/admins forum, so this seemed to be the next best place to post.
I installed VBox (2.1.2) on Solaris 10 x86, and then created a Solaris 10 guest. After installing the guest additions package to the Solaris guest the X-server fails to start.
I see the following message on the VBox console for the guest:
The X-server can not be started on display :0...
See file /var/dt/Xerror for details. The /var/dt/Xerrors file shows these messages.
Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly 1
Server for display :0 can't be startedI found that removing (or renaming) the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file clears this problem up.
Since this guest OS is going to be my SunRay server I don't know if removing the xorg.conf file is going to cause some other problems later on.
Has anybody else seen this problem?
    And/or
Does anybody know the xorg.conf file well enough to know how to fix this without completely removing the file?

By default Solaris does not create an xorg.conf file. It probes for the values and uses what it finds. You can find several books on X Windows and one of those should be able to step you through the xorg.conf file.
You can probably find an online version at some Linux Vendors documentation web site.

Can you please let us know which might be the best golden gate software for us.Possibly the solaris x86_64 build was downloaded, instead of the build for solaris sparc? (I think all of our current solaris builds are 64-bit.) It's almost certainly a download / OS mismatch.
What exact file did you download (what's the file name, before unzipping it), and on your solaris box, what's the result of => "uname -a" and/or "isainfo -v" ...? Just make sure the downloaded file matches what the box is running...
Btw, not that it matters in this case, but if you were hypothetically running a 32-bit database on a 64-bit OS, you'd need a 32-bit build of GoldenGate. But I don't know why you'd do that. (And that's not the problem here.)

    Dear All,
I try many times to create guest virtual machine with Solaris 10 SPARC but not get success.

I storgly doubt, VMware player is available for Solaris 10 SPARC version.
Solaris 10 is not a comercial product, like ubuntu, windows, MAC etc... It's really for a server.
That's the reason still I hate Solaris 11 as a desktop. You have very limited product/software.... This may change for Solaris 11, but U can't expect one for Solaris 10.

  • How to configure Solaris 10 IPMP for Oracle VDI 3.3.2

    Hi,
Does anyone have an indication on how to configure Solaris 10 IPMP in a manner that supports Oracle VDI?
We have setup two servers with 2 test addresses on physical and 1 logical for the hostname of the box, but when we configure VDI the VDI database does not come up on the 2nd box. We have also tried configuring IPMP without test addresses, but it doesn't make any difference - the DB still doesn't go into the up state after configuration on the 2nd server.
    Solaris 10 u9 with patches
Two physical NICs on management VLAN via 2 switches
Two physical NIcs on VDI VLAN via 2 switches
    VDI 3.3.2
All hostnames are in DNS and resolve for short name, FQDN and also reverse IP lookup
The is a proposal pdf on Oracle website that mentions IPMP, so someone has done it. Just could do with a hint on how it was done so that it works.
    Thanks
    Paul

OK, updating this with what was causing the issue.
Not an IPMP problem this was a DNS problem. The VDI servers have access to two DNS environments, so had a DNS search path that had the domain where the VMs where going to go and another for management of the box with two DNS servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf.
We configured VDI using the FQDN for the management DNS, however the vda-config script takes the hostname of the box adds the first DNS domain from /etc/resolv.conf search entry and configures using (it seams to ignore what you put into the vda-config). When the config script comes to configuring MySQL because the names didn't match (FQDN it created by adding hostname to the 1st entry in DNS search path & FQDN that you put into vda-config command), it decides that it is configuring a "Client MySQL" instance rather than a "Slave MySQL" instance, which means the VDA DB never comes up in the out of vda-center status.
    So the fix is to:
    1) configure IPMP without test addresses (so traffic comes out of the correct IP and can be reverse looked up in DNS by the other host)
    2) if you have multiple DNS search entries, configure VDI using the first entry in your search path as its FQDN

  • Upgrade of 8.1.7.4  on Solaris 5.8 to Oracle 10g

    Hi Gurus-
We are planning to upgrade some of the legacy databases to 10g.
They are all 8.1.7.4 instances on Solaris 5.8 with Standby configuration.
1)Is it possible to upgrade the instances on the same OS version(5.8) to 10g?
2)Where can I find the related documents which detail the supported OS versions pertaining to 10g?
3)Since the environment consists of Standby how can we minimise the downtime of upgrade? Any best practices and proven methods please.
Need to convert the existing DMTs to LMTs as well.
    Appreciate your valuable inputs
    Thanks,
    newDBA

    Hi newDBA,
    to answer your questions:
    1) Yes, according to Metalink ==> Certify ... Solaris 5.8 is certified to run an Oracle 10gR2 installation:
Operating System: Solaris Operating System (SPARC) Version 8
Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition Version 10gR2 64-bit
    N/A Version N/A
    Status: Certified
    Product Version Note:
    None available for this product.
    Certification Note:
    Existing Patch Sets:
    10.2.0.2 Requires patch 5117016
    10.2.0.3
    10.2.0.4
    2) See first of all the CERTIFY button on Metalink and make sure also to check the release notes and the installation guide for Oracle on Solaris:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/relnotes.102/b15689/toc.htm
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15690/toc.htm
3a) Minimize the downtime with a standby
Your standby will be upgraded implicitly - this means you upgrade the production database and you restart your standby in MOUNT mode in the new environment you've installed on the standby machine as well. Once you switch your standby to ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT; then it'll start synchronizing with your already upgraded production system.
During the regular upgrade either with DBUA or CATUPGRD.SQL there's not much possibility to shrink your downtime. You should create dictionary stats right before the upgrade but mainly the time it'll take is dependent on the number of options/components you've installed in your current database.
Recompilation by the way will be done automatically in parallel - so CPU power will save you some time here.
But always the question will be:
Can you accept approx 1-4 hours of downtime or not?
3b) Dictionary Managed Tablespaces to Locally Managed Tablespaces
As long as you don't touch the system tablespace this can be done online with no additional downtime. But as soon as you convert also the SYSTEM tablespace you have to startup your database at this point in RESTRICT EXCLUSIVE mode - which in fact means downtime.
Hope this helps - kind regards
    Mike
