Unsigned applet: some machines can copy to clipboard, others can't

My understanding of Java applet security says that an unsigned applet cannot copy-to or paste-from the system clipboard. However, on at least two systems at my office (but not mine) the user can highlight text in one of our applets, hit Ctrl-C and copy the text to the clipboard. All machines are current vintage, running MS XP and Java 1.4.2. I've checked the java.policy files and they are identical--there are no non-standard permissions in them.
Now my boss is complaining that I told him this couldn't be done without going the signed applet route. Does anybody know what's going on?

First of all if you're developing applets for your company (or another one) make sure they
have the jre set up correctly.
Any respectfull IT person within a company has IE security set up so why not the jre as
wel?
Using the default jre installation in your company? Are you allso using the default IE
install or did you not agree with some settings there?
Anyway here is how I think you should set up the jre for your companys people:
I think a good configuration would be a keystore and policy on the company's
Intranet to be used by everyone and if so needed a keystore and policy in the user home
folder to be edited only by admins. Add the 2 keystores to the java.security and the
admins can configure any special privileges to special applets (like IE security zones
but more detailed).
Add the following line to all codebases: "grant { " section in the java.policy/
permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "usePolicy";
Now the user does not have the option of "do you trust" for signed applets. I think this
is a verry good idea because anyone with a jdk can sign their jar.
About someone beeing able to copy and the other one not, I guess you've given the
user too much freedom in changing their settings (the msjvm settings in IE). The
applet is probably not even run with the SUN jre because you are using the Applet tag.
Now I am not even sure if hitting crl + c does anyting with an unsigned applet but I would guess that accessing the clipboard from code should not be possible.

Adobe pro - print settings: How do i make a custom page size list, which i can copy to my other computers who have adobe pro installed?

your right.. i ment acrobat pro :-)
my problem is that i use the PDF printer to export CAD drawings as PDF´s.
As it is now, there are some pre-defined page sizes in the print settings, and i know i can add custom pages manually one at a time.
What i want is to copy the list of my danish standard page sizes, and use them on my other versions of acrobat.
Its like 70 different sizes, and i have them made manually on my current computer, but i hope its possible to copy the list to other computers.
Maby its some script where i can define the sizes, and then copy to another computer. Im just not that much of a computer genius :-)
Hope i got through this without to many spelling mistakes...
    Thanks for helping.

  • Error code -36.  Two MACs: One mac can copy DVD data, one can't.

On the G5 that appears in the profile below, I cannot copy VOB files without getting error code -36 in which the copy operation times out. Another older 1.6G G5 can copy. The problem computer has a Pioneer 115D burner. Older computer has a Sony U10A.
I believe the problem has come with the new (4 months) Pioneer drive, cause I definitely used to be able to copy off the DVD drive, just don't remember how recently. Doggoneit!
    Thanks.

I just determined that the same function thru the network was a problem which pointed to the target fw800 G-drive. Then I started copying thru the network and off a DVD to a fw800 G-RAID drive, and the copy was a success.
So now the performance of this G-Drive (non-journaled). Why would this drive behave this way?

  • 2 powerbooks, 1 APE; one can connect, but the other can't

I have two powerbooks and one Airport Express. One can connect to the APE, but the other can't. There were no problems earlier this evening, but it just stopped for some reason. Under "Internet Connect" it lists Aiport Power as "On", and it has no trouble finding the other computer when I turn on internet sharing, which leads me to believe that the airport card is working fine, but it seems to be a connection problem. Any ideas?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Does the PowerBook, having trouble connecting, able to connect to other Wi-Fi networks?
If so, let's double-check your AirPort settings on the problematic device...
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. - Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
    - Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    - By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Proxies tab
    - Configure Proxies: Manually
    - Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    - Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
    - Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
    - Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

  • I can't see website, others can

    Hi All
Today I purchased a domain name from dotster.com; and set up forwarding to my .mac account. Within the hour everything was working just fine...I could enter the url: www.robertdelaneyarts.com I could navigate through the site and everything was cool. Just a few minutes ago I tried to get on it and got a message : "Future home of Robert Delaney Arts". I can not make the website appear; I called my sister and she typed in the url and the website popped up. We both use Safari as our web browser.
Anybody want to try it and see if it comes up for you and let me know.
Any thoughts on what is wrong and what I can do to fix it
    Thanks

I see I wasn't completely clear in my original post. The complete location I used was
http://www.robertdelaneyarts.com When the website came up I bookmarked it, and emailed the link to my sister. We were using the same address to access the website, obviously with different results.
I waited about 30 minutes and tried again and it did come up using my original address. I have no idea why it would come up, and then not come up and then later come up....maybe it doesn't really matter, but I do worry about galleries not being able to access the website.
After reading your post I tried: http://robertdelaneyarts.com and I was unable to access the website, I got the same message that i received before. So it would not appear to be a url issue.
Is this something to be concerned about, is it something that just happens and I need to just get over it or is this an issue i should try to solve?
    Thanks

  • I Can Watch .mov but others can't?

Someone edited some clips together for me with the format:
    DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480, Millions
    DV, Stereo, 32.000 kHz
I later trimmed the slate/titles from the beginning and the end using iMovie (I'm mentioning this because myabe I caused the problem?).
I uploaded the altered mov file to my Web site and I've been told by some people that it won't work when they try to view it. Problem is, no one who told me it didn't work has told me exactly what happened, or rather what didn't happen (e.g. Error message? Quicktime symbol and nothing else? Quicktime symbol with a white question mark?) when they go to:
    http://www.reginaldjames.com/SecureJames.mov
Here's the info on the file, any suggestions?
    SecureJames.mov - Codecs: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, DV, Tween
    Quicktime 7.0 Info for SecureJames.mov:
    DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480, Millions
    DV, Stereo, 32.000 kHz

I forwarded your letter to the guy who edited the clips. Maybe he'll redo the coding/format. So did I corrupt it by trimmimg the ends in iMovie instead of Final Cut Pro? Or, does this have nothing to do with FCP, but with QT?
The file was not "corrupted" per sé. Basically, at some point the file was saved as a "reference" which is simply as set of instructions in one file which tells QT how a second movie file should play/be displayed. aIn order for this to work, however, both files must be present/accessable. Since only the "instructions" file was uploaded to the server, the QT Player/QT plug-in cannot find the main file for playing even though it knows how that file is supposed to be played. The most likely point at which this occurred would be when you "trimmed" the main file since the reference or project file must have been present for you to make the edits. During the "Export," "Save," or "save As..." process, you should have seen a window like this:
You will note there are two options in the lower half of the window. The first creats a file which will play independently. The second creates a very small file (i.e., the set of instructions) which tells how the main self-contained file is to be played. This is a very useful option when passing a file from one application to another for processing purposes since it saves both time and HDD space during the "handoff."
Does this still coincide with your observations?
Yes, it does. Basically there are two solutions at this point. The first (and more preferred in my opinion) would simply be to re-open the "trimmed" file/project, re-save the target file as a "self-contained" file, and replace the "reference" file on the server with the new file. The other option is to upload the "reference" file making sure the "relative path" is the same as it was on your editing HDD. Unfortunately, it is likely that this may be difficult to accomplish and the path will end up being "broken" at some point.
... Also, how do I avoid making a reference file and keeping securejames.mov a self-contained file. Is that possible in iMovie? I'm just asking so I know for future endeavors. I'm going to start again I think and mpeg-it.
If iMovie is an older version, believe the original defalt setting was for "reference" movies which were being passed off to iDVD. As indicated above, simply change the preference from "reference" to "self-contained" during the file creation work flow. Once changed, I believe the option will remained unchanged until you again manually re-set it.
Hope that covers all of your questions.

  • I have a new mac mini I5 - I cannot find and copy Maverick onto a flash so that I can install on the other 7 iMacs - don't want to download from App store to each machine

I have a new mac mini I5 - I cannot find and copy Maverick onto a flash so that I can install on the other 7 iMacs - don't want to download from App store to each machine - files too big
    Please assist

You need to download it on one of the iMacs via App store but not install since after it installs the installation download gets deleted.
After it is downloaded you can copy to a USB device. You can also make a bootable USB install device by:
    downloading and using DiskMaker X

  • Is there a way to include material in a DVD that some CAN copy?

Is there a way to include material in a DVD that some CAN copy?
I have a 30min project that I am going to burn that is copyrighted. But I’d like to add some stills or maybe a screensaver that the purchaser could copy from the disk and use.
    Thanks!

Copyright is not the same thing as copy protect. Your material may very well be copyrighted, but it won't be copy protected if you are burning the DVD in your Superdrive. You must use a replication house to get copy protection. If you do this, you can include copyable stuff on the disc. I've seen commercial disks with PDF files, etc that you can freely use. I have no experience on how to do it though.
But, don't fool yourself. There really is no copy protection anymore on DVDs. Anyone with an internet connection can figure out how to defeat it using software available free on the internet. All you can do is make it a hassle to copy it.

  • Purchased a 5T external, formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), trying to drag and drop Time Machine. Tells me "The backup can't be copied because the backup volume doesn't have ownership enabled." How do I enable ownership? What is ownership?

    Thanks!

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
This technique will only work if the volume you're copying to is the same size, or larger than, the one you're copying from.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may have to unlock the settings first by clicking the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Authenticate as an administrator.
Delete the volume you're going to copy from the list of backup destinations. Then turn Time Machine OFF.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway.
If the volume you're copying was encrypted by Time Machine, you may have to unlock it first. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar of the Disk Utility window.
Turn Time Machine back ON and select the new volume as a backup destination. You can also continue to use the old volume, if you wish. The two will be alternated when both are available.
CAUTION: If the volume you're copying is corrupt, as shown by Repair Disk or Verify Disk in Disk Utility, then that corruption will be copied to the new drive. Don't copy data from a corrupt volume on a malfunctioning drive. Put the drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and take it to a recycling center. Do the same if the Restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • Why can only some machines see netboot images at the startup screen?

I have a 10.6.6 server running as a netboot server. I have about 10 images running on the server that consist of a 10.6.6 and 10.5.8 triage partition and a 10.6.6 and 10.5.8 restore image. Now what I have noticed is that newer machines after starting up and holding down the option key will see all the available images. But on some older intel machines nothing will show up after holding the option key down accept the internal drive itself, But if you hold down the N key it WILL boot to the default image.
I have made sure and checked that the ethernet port was working on the older machines. I also made sure that I can see the images from the startup control panel. All machines can see the netboot images from the startup control panel, but older intel versions cant. However I was able to sometimes get the old white and black macbooks to see the images but others not.
Any suggestions as to why some machines will see the images at the startup screen after holding the option key and why some wont?

That, most likely, means that you have a fairly large number of images and/or they have very long names.
The number of images that can be displayed is limited by the size of the data packet which contains the NetBoot volume information. Two techniques we use to keep this in check are 1) aggressive purging of outdated images, and 2) use of shorter display names (the one seen in Startup Disk, not the one in the NetBootSP0 folder).

  • I have Firefox 25.0.1 . I have no problem highlighting so I can copy some things, but I can't even highlight others. But I can in Mexplorer!?! help?

I tried the old fix posted by jscher2000 about "To try to block sites from interfering with the copy action, you can switch a setting under the covers." and followed his directions re the "about:config" and switched the dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled to false.
No luck (Not surprised since that seemed rooted in a different issue). So, I changed it back.
Selecting all and then copying still yeilds the same results in that the text does not transfer (text and other things around the desired text does though). (All though it still does not copy, it oddly shows as highlighted at least.)
I used to be able to highlight/copy all from this site with Firefox. Annoyingly I still can copy the desired text on Microsoft Explorer (but I prefer using Firefox!).
(P.S. I have AVG Security 2014 and AVGPC TuneUp but that does not interfere with MExplorer and disabling does not seem to help).

    Thank you for your help!
(I hope all of these work-arounds won't be required in future versions of Firefox though, or at least that there will be good add-ons developed)

  • Can't copy files to a network share but can copy folders...

I frequently use a network share at work. I can view files off of it fine. I can erase files off it. I can copy folders to it.
However, any time I copy any single file I get the following error.
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
This occurs for every file I've tried. From txt files to jpgs to docs. Everything gives that error and fails. I'm at a loss and it's totally killing my productivity.
It's a linux based share and all permissions on that box are correct. My account can easily copy files from other machines. Also, the fact that files and modifications work on this computer seems to prove that as well. I think it's pretty apparent that the cause of this error is on my laptops end.
I've verified my disk permissions. I have no clue what could be causing this.
