Can't copy files to a network share but can copy folders...

I frequently use a network share at work. I can view files off of it fine. I can erase files off it. I can copy folders to it.
However, any time I copy any single file I get the following error.
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
This occurs for every file I've tried. From txt files to jpgs to docs. Everything gives that error and fails. I'm at a loss and it's totally killing my productivity.
It's a linux based share and all permissions on that box are correct. My account can easily copy files from other machines. Also, the fact that files and modifications work on this computer seems to prove that as well. I think it's pretty apparent that the cause of this error is on my laptops end.
I've verified my disk permissions. I have no clue what could be causing this.

  • Using robocopy to copy files from a network share over a WinRS command line session

    Hello,
    Preface: Using server 2008 enterprise.
I can't seem to get robocopy to function over WinRS and I'm not sure where the problem actually lies.  Running robocopy locally on the computer does work fine, but as soon as I try to run it through a remote command prompt through the WinRS client or directly with the WinRS client I get an access denied message (error 5).
I've tried using runas while logged into the remote command prompt as well, thinking that it could have been some sort of permissions inheritence issue.
I've checked the permissions on the remote file share, I've even given 'Everyone', 'Anonymous Logon' and the computer's active directory account full control over the folder and the file I'm trying to copy, but still get the access denied error.
I've tried using /COPY:DT since I read that usually resolved error 5 issues.
None of these things have worked.
I'm kind of out of ideas, I've read some blogs of people who have written powershell scripts which use winrm/robocopy so I figure I'm missing something stupid.  Or maybe I've stumbled upon a bug?

Yep, I verified permissions on them all :(
To maybe complicate the issue, I looked at the environment variables for myself while logged in locally to the computer and through WinRS and they look to be the same.
EDIT: Out of pure frustration I wrote a quick console application which impersonates the currently logged in user and copies a file from the network share I'm trying to access to the local computer.  The application properly impersonates the user - but does not copy the files while it's run through WinRM.  When you run the application as a locally logged in user it works just fine.
WinRM must be behaving goofy :(

  • Windows 8.1 Network Share 0x8007003b Error Copying Files

    Hi All,
I'm having an issue when copying files from a Windows network share. If the file is above 5MB it will start copying and then after a minute or two I will get an error such as:
    Interrupted Action
An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.
Error 0x8007003B: An unexpected network error occurred.
The network share is in a different office and is accessible over a point-to-point VPN, so the connection is not that fast.
But before everyone tells me to start diagnosing the router and or VPN please take note of the following:
My colleague who is running Windows 7 can copy files from the network share fine
If I run a Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 laptop I can copy the files across fine
I also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client
VMs to a similar speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.
There is also a noticeable difference visually when copying using Windows 8.1 and Windows 7:
Windows 7 - The progress bar progresses smoothly giving the current speed and estimated time remaining
Windows 8.1 - The progress bar progresses in a jumpy fashion. E.g. it shows no progress, then after a minute it jumps and shows 16% progress, then shows no further progress, then jumps by another 18%. There is no estimated time remaining.
I ran Wireshark to investigate what was going on at the network layer. I see the following behaviour:
Windows 8.1 - The file is copying fine then all of a sudden there are a lot of TCP dupack packets. After which the Windows 8.1 client sends a RST packet and then the error pops up.
Windows 7 - The file is copying fine then you also see a load of TCP dupack packets, however no error is displayed and it continues copying fine.
I'd appreciate any help with this I'm hoping there are some settings I can change to make Windows 8.1 behave more like Windows 7!
FYI originally posed here (but was advised to ask on Technet) - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/windows-81-network-share-0x8007003b-error-copying/300bc9a4-597b-402a-b885-9dd6f6fb51a2

    To answer your original questions.
Do you mean the file below 5 MB will copy fine ?
5MB is not a hard limit. If the file is small enough it will copy before it errors out. A file of around 5MB or so fails with an error.
Have you tried to copy the files from another Windows 8.1 machine (This will help us to verify whether the issue is casued by the specific machine)?Have you tried to copy another file from the network share to have a check ?
Yes I've tried from another Windows 8.1 machine and have the same behaviour. It is the same with different files from the network share. And the same with different network shares.
I am seeing nothing in the event viewer when the error occurs. I do not believe this to be a VPN issue because I can recreate this situation perfectly. As I mentioned in the original post- I
also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client VMs to a similar
speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.
Basically, I had virtual machines all on the same local network. One virtual machine was hosting a file share with files on it. I created one Windows 7 VM and one Windows 8.1 VM. Using VMWare Workstation you can limit the network bandwidth to the VMs. When
I did not limit the network bandwidth I could copy all files of all sizes fine. However, when I limit the network bandwidth to a speed of around 30-50KBps, the Windows 8.1 VM fails to copy files with the same error. But Windows 7 VM copies the files fine.
The point of limiting the bandwidth in this way is to create a similar scenario to that I see when connecting over the VPN.
This all leads me to believe there is some sort of issue with copying files from fileshares over slow connections using Windows 8.1.
    Cheers,
    Zak

  • Cannot Copy Files over a network

I've had a new hard drive installed in iMac by Apple, and Apple re-installed the OS, which is running 10.6.7 (all current software updates are installed). The iMac is part of a network connecting to a OS X Server 10.4.10
All of the Network Drives have been connected, the user can copy documents under 1MB to and from the server fine. However if we try to copy files over 1MB the first file will copy fine, but then no more files can be copied to the server from this machine, regardless of the size.
If i use another Mac, with the same user credentials I can copy files of any size without any issues. I have tried connecting to the Network using both the Ethernet port and Airport but I experience the same issue regardless.
If I reboot the iMac I can copy a file over 1MB again and then the symptoms re-present themselves. I have tried creating a users, new network drives, folders etc. I can connect using any user, to any of the new folders from any other machine on the network but not from this one.
When the copying fails Finder just hangs with
Copying "" to "ShareName" rather than having the name of the file, I believe this may be where the error lies.
I have also tried running the App Maintenance from Titanium Software, after running this i can copy files over the network fine, but after I have copied 10 or so files, the situation goes back to not copying files correctly.

  • Problems copying files to a SMB share.

    Hello,
Having some odd issues since moving to 10.6. It appears to be a combination of two problems.
We are in a PC based Active Directory environment. The Mac is bound to the AD and has a Mobile account configured. The problem is with copying files to the network Home folder.
On attempting to copy a file to the network drive I received a "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items" error. This only seems to effect some files. I checked the permissions on both the file I was attempting to copy and the destination folder. I had full read/write access to both.
I attempted to copy the file with the terminal and got an error that I was unable to copy the extended file attributes of the file as I did not have permission.
Using the xattr command I could see that the file had the com.apple.TextEncoding attribute. I used the xattr -d command to delete the attribute and I was then able to copy the file with the Finder. Another file I tested that I could not copy had the com.apple.FinderInfo attribute. Deleting this attribute also allowed me to copy the file.
It seems that any file with extended file attributes in 10.6 cannot be copied to our SMB shares. I have tested this on all of our 10.6 Macs with exactly the same result. 10.5 has not had the same problem.
Now for the second problem. After copying the file as part of the testing I attempted to copy the same file over and replace the existing file and got the error "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "" can't be read or written (Error code -36)". I attempted to this a number of times and found that approx 50% of the time it does copy with no error. Checking the Console gives me the following message for the times it does give an error :
27/10/09 4:03:27 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[153] Allocator race detected: transaction is not verified for -101/2 - test7.txt
Any light that can be shone on this issue would be great. This means for us that OS X 10.6 is fundamentally broken and can't be installed on any machines.

Just posted on the Entourage Help Blog: Workaround for saving Office 2008 files to SMB servers in Snow Leopard
    http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2009/12/workaroundfor_saving_office_2008_files_to_smb_servers_insn.html
According to Craig, a poster on the microsoft.public.mac.office newsgroup:
Changing the owner of the share to NETWORK SERVICE will solve the problem. I have tested this on a test share I set up during troubleshooting and it works! I have told my MS support rep about the workaround and she was going to spread it around. She mentioned that Apple appears to have a fix in the works but not to expect it to be released until February!

  • Windows 7 - Files missing from network share after trying to burn and no data cached to be burned

I ran into an issue trying to burn some file from a network share using Windows 7 Home Professional.  I was trying to burn some .jpg files from a mapped network share drive using explorer.  Every time I would drag the files to be burned from
the share drive to the explorer screen to be burned, the files would disappear from the share.  To make things worse the files would not show up in the screen to be burned.  I was unable to locate any of the files on either of the systems when performing
a search after this took place.  I verified that the steps that I was taking to burn the files were the same as outlined on the Microsoft site.  No matter what I did to burn these files, they were deleted from the mapped network drive.
Below are the steps that I took that both resulted in the files being deleted as well as what I had to do to finally burn the disc.
Steps that resulted in files being deleted:
    1. Insert blank CD into drive.
    2. From prompt select burn using explorer (Mastered Format)
    3. Enter title and select with CD/DVD, click Next.
    4. Open a second explorer window, navigate to mapped network drive with files to be burned and snap next to explorer to be burned.
    5. Drag and drop the files from the share drive to CD.
This where the train would fall off the tracks every time.  I would receive a message that the file(s) no longer exist and if I wanted to continue.  From here the files would be deleted from the share drive.  The best part is that the files
would also NOT be locally stored to be burned.
Steps to burn share files WITHOUT delete:
Follow steps outlined above, but instead of just dragging and dropping the files as outlined in step 5 select the files from the network share location, right mouse select copy.  Then right mouse select paste in the explorer window to be burned.
I have tested this many times and every time ended up with the same problem.  At this point I am sure that there is a problem with the way that Windows 7 is performing the burn.  The system that I was using to burn is Windows 7 Home Professional
with all the patches and updates loaded.  The remote system is Windows XP Professional with all the patches and updates loaded.
    Thanks in advance

Yes, the problem is still continuing. However, after looking into as much of it as I can, I can confirm something that r.p.b_ started stumbling on. The files are deleted IF AND ONLY IF a user is using the built-in Windows 7 disc burning utility AND is dragging
and dropping the files to the drive from a network share; this doesn't happen locally. If you watch what happens in the native folder, the files are literally scrubbed from the drive as they are processed and added to the image. However, if you Right Click
on the files and copy them, then Right Click->Paste onto the drive, they remain. (The keyboard shortcuts also worked.) Also, 3rd party disc burning utilities function they way the should. (In other words, they don't delete the files.)
My speculation is that there's a bug in the coding that sees the network share as a temporary buffer file while the image is being prepared. Then, as the files are processed in what ever way is needed, the "temporary buffer" is being deleted. The result:
lost files on a network share. But, this is just speculation.

  • How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?

How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?
I am using a QNAP NAS with SMB network shares, which I mount with OS X Mavericks. They are not searchable, as far as I know because of the indexing of network share is by default not activated.
To force the OS to index them I activated this via mdutils. But this is no solutions. This makes spotlight to index the share once. But I want spotlight to index it always and keep it up to date. I have a huge amount of documents & fotographs, which is very difficult to manage without being searchable.
Unfortunately the only solution I found in the www was the mdutils-way, which seems not to work, maybe only works not for me.
    I would appreciate any assistance,
    Thank you,
    Stefan

My thanks to everyone who has contributed to solving this problem here.
It appears that there still is NOT a good, reliable solution.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I did find this on http://jonathansblog.co.uk/how-to-enable-spotlight-indexing-on-a-network-drive:
    ===================================
To enable spotlight indexing on a network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i on
To disable the indexing of a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i off
To check the status of indexing on a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -s
    ===================================
And, I found this on the Synology NAS forums:
    cd /Volumes
    mdutil shareName -i on
    mdimport -Vp ./shareName
where shareName = name of your share
I have used the mdutil /Volumes/name -i on, and it seems to work.
But, if I understand it correctly, it is a one-time indexing -- the index is NOT keep up-to-date with changes.
So, how can we keep the index up-to-date?
My thought was to schedule a Terminal file to execute each night with the mdutil code.
Would this work?  If so, how would you setup a scheduled run?
Would it have to be done on each Mac that accesses the Share?

  • Problem of file association while copying files from the network.

    Hello,
I have a network shared folder with Quark Xpress files on it. I own an Imac with MacOSX 10.4.3 where Quark Xpress is not installed but I want to transfer Quark files from this network share to an other.
When I do this, the file association is missing on the copied file. The original has still the Quark icon, but the copied file has a blank icon and when trying to execute it from a mac with Quark Xpress installed, it does not recognize it (?). It's kind of a file association loose.
For information, when I do the same manipulation using a mac with OS9 and Quark installed, I have no problem with the file association in output.
Hope someone had the same situation to help me. In anyway, sorry for my English, I tried to do my best to explain my problem !

Zip the files. Select the files, Finder->File->Make Archive, transfer them, and unzip them using the Finder or Stuffit Expander.

  • How can I keep lion from generating .DS_Store files on windows network partitions, but not disable it for all network partitions?

How can I keep lion from generating .DS_Store files on windows network partitions, but not disable it for all network partitions?  I am fimilar with changing the setting for all network partitions(defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true), but that is undesirable when I connect my laptop to my home network. A preferable solution would be where I could control the writing of these files based on disk format (NTFS vs HFS+).

Go to MacUpdate or CNET Downloads and search for ds_store. There are numerous utilities for preventing them from being transferred to Windows systems.

  • Can't see files on a network Hard Drive

So I have a new airport extreme and I wanted to put a drive on the network. I have two HDDs: one is the time machine that I normally have connected to my computer and another is a Hitachi that I just have Movies on. Both of them will show up under the APE in the shared, but none of the files that are on the drives show up as being there. I also tried backing up when my time capsule was on the network (I could see the shared drive icon on the desktop) but it said the backup volume couldn't be found. When I look at the disks in the airport utility it says that they have things written, but I can only see the empty free space when I open them from my MB. Can I access the files that are normally on the drives from the network without having to reformat them?
The Hitachi is formatted under the Journaled Mac OS as well.

I had the drive on a user password, but changed it to just be accessible if you were connected to the router. With this setting I can see the files on my movie drive, but when I try to do I time machine backup, it just sits on the "making backup disk available" and never is able to start the backup. Is there some trick to allowing the disk to backup from the airport?

  • Excel 2007 ribbon freezes when opening (double clicking) a file from a network share

So unlike other post I have found when double clicking an excel file from a network share the ribbon is frozen. If I start excel from the start menu then open the file through recent documents browse to the file from within excel the ribbon is active.
Also, the preview pane is not active so it is not that issue.

Hello-  I am having the same issue with a client in my office.  Minimizing then bringing it back up fixes the problem but it is still a hassle.  Have you found out anything else?  Thanks - Erik

How i can recover deleted files from icloud,,I had a backup copy on iCloud for whatsapp application and I lost it,,I need bring it back what I have to do

You can't download pictures from iCloud by logging into icloud.com.  If you deleted pictures from camera roll AND photo stream, the only possibility is preforming a restore from an iCloud backup, assuming the backup has the pictures in it.  (Many users have been unable to restore and get back their pictures.)
If the restore doesn't have all the pictures, then they are gone.
In the future, use photo stream to sync photos from an iPhone to a computer, then copy the photos on the computer from the photo stream album into a permanent album.  Photo stream pics stay there only for 30 days, and only up to 1000 photos are stored.  Don't use photo stream as a storage medium, it's only for copying photos from one device to another.  Always copy (either via USB cable or photo stream) to a computer and then move to an album.

I just spent several hours dealing with this when switching to a new PC. It was extremely frustrating as I knew my files were on my external HD but no matter how many times I copied my old iTunes folder over the files were still missing...because dummy me had forgotten to "unhide folders" on my new PC and my old files were actually stored in a hidden folder created long long ago.
This is how I did it on Windows 7 with iTunes 10
    1. Look in iTunes Advanced Preferences to see where iTunes is saving files. (Edit, Preferences, Advanced)
         Example: C:/Users/Woildbill/My Music/iTunes/Music
    2. Ensure you are able to see hidden files - Control Panel, Folder Option, View, Show Hidden Files
    3. Use Your Computer's Search Function to Locate the Missing File (Start, Search, type name of song - I started my search in "My Music" folder but be sure to expand to entire Computer if not found right away)
    4. In Search Results, right-click found folder and select properties. This will tell you where the file is actually stored.
    5. Use Windows Explorer (right-click start) to navigate to the location of the file. It is likley your other missing files are in the same location.
    6. In Windows Explorer, copy the newly located files to the iTumes location from Step 1 and everything should work again.
    Hope this helps!
